Latest digiKam master.

I have noticed some floating point values are not locale-aware, i. e. they only
use dot as the decimal separator. It might be a good idea to check all the
user-facing floating point values to be locale aware using QLocale.

For instance, see screenshot attached. My language uses comma as the separator,
but there it’s displayed using a dot.

[kaidan] [Bug 494782] New: Strings do not have helpful context

Greetings, translator here.

Currently Kaidan strings do not seem to have the recommended User Interface
Markers[1] to indicate the location of a specific user-interface string. Adding
these markers add a lot to the quality of the translation, since it allows the
translators to distinguish and tailor the capitalisation patterns and other
possible language-specific rules. Currently it looks like there is some sort of
automatic context[3] added, but it does not help at all.

As a bonus point, it might be a good idea to review the updated HIG[2] for
writing texts, and using the specific punctuation and mark patterns for a
better presentation and accessibility of the user interface strings.

[lokalize] [Bug 492709] New: Lokalize cannot find the letter İ

 Component: general

  Target Milestone: ---

Steps:
- Use some Turkish file which has the string “Import” in it. The Turkish
translation for “Import” is “İçe Aktar”.
- Search for “İçe Aktar” in both quick search and search in files

Expected:
- “İçe Aktar” should be found

Actual:
- “İçe Aktar” is not found, unless match case is used

Context:
This is a very common edge case in most software, which might require using
appropriate local-aware methods within Qt (search for “Turkish i problem”).
Basically, İ is the capital version of i, and I is the capital version of ı in
Turkish. This also affects other Turkic languages, since most of them also has
this letter in their Latin alphabets (even the translation levels are currently
low within KDE).

While searching, ideally, both searching for i should return the results for
both capital letters. I was procrastinating to open this bug report for several
years now.

Amarok 3.0.1 Git, see screenshot.

The progress bar area of Amarok is not easily legible with a dark theme. The
icon buttons are not dark-mode ready, and the buttons being justified makes it
look like it wastes the screen estate. It is not designed with wide screen
displays in mind.

A visual overhaul with the latest Breeze styling would be very welcome. Basing
off from this something like:

- A retro music system like display, with digital numbers and equaliser
visualisation
- Some ideas from a modernised WinAmp like display, but adopted to Amarok
- Modern applications like Apple Music macOS app, which has a very striking
look

Sorry for the missing information. It's 5.1.80, and all the locale settings are
tr_TR.UTF-8. The system settings locale section displays the currency sign
correctly. LibreOffice also displays the sign correctly, unable to install
Calligra due to package errors at the moment.

I can't say for previous versions, I am the Turkish translator, and was just
checking out the strings. I only have KDE neon Unstable as my KDE system.

I tried to compile the latest master, but I was not successful due to

You are confidently incorrect.

The product is Discover, and this is a dialogue within libdiscover, so please
stop making stuff up. If you want to help fixing it, you can check out
DiscoverWindow.qml file, as it originates there.

What it says on the error message is irrelevant, because it is a layout bug,
and as it is evident that the button is clipped and there is no padding
whatsoever.

There is no reason to close this one as RESOLVED NOT A BUG, since it is

2024-03-28 Thread Emir SARI
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=484660

Bug ID: 484660
Summary: Decimal formatting is not locale-aware
Classification: Applications
   Product: kontrast
   Version: unspecified
  Platform: Other
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: general
  Assignee: c...@carlschwan.eu
  Reporter: emir_s...@icloud.com
  Target Milestone: ---

All the decimal values use dot as decimal separator. These should be
locale-aware, since not every locale uses dot as the separator. It looks like
.fixed() is used, this one won't work.

For languages with different word order, it really looks out of place when
trying to make it work. They should either be spelled explicitly if possible

A while ago, I've enabled localisations for all the percent values in KTorrent.
However, checking now the latest Git copy, although the values have been
translated long ago, they do not seem to be reflected into the UI.

To test easily, start KTorrent from the terminal with the LANG=tr variable.
Normally you should see the percent values on the main table view with the %100
format. However, they are still in 100% format.

There is one in the accessibility column in the info pane, it still reflects
the original string in "100 %" format. But in code they are all translated, and
should be %100.

Something simple, yet my mind cannot comprehend. What could be the reason?

Not all languages use standard Alt name, in other places this is taken from Qt,
with localised name automatically. On other places like menus on the menu bar,
the localised names are taken automatically, but on this instance not,
curiously. It just doesn’t look cohesive.

Plasma Shell itself ought to work with some sort of available menus when there
are no applications present. This is similar to how macOS Finder has always
menus available when there are no open applications.

As an additional note, the application launcher should also work in unison with
Plasma Shell. This includes transfer of focus from application launcher to
application menus (when either one is open, they should continue being open),
and disabling necessary tooltips in order not to obstruct the menu itself.

[plasmashell] [Bug 481686] Continue to show menus for the previously-focused window when focus is lost to the panel or one of its widgets

> various system functions like Settings or disk management, or Dolphin's menu

This is a good solution, but I think the active window would still lose focus
whenever other widgets are clicked.

I think the approach here should be something similar to a dedicated Global
Menu mode, where it is treated as a root Plasma object which has greater
privileges rather than just being a widget. The user can switch to the previous
"Taskbar Mode", where they can customise their panels as needed, but the Global
Menu mode would change the paradigm totally (just like macOS does).

Not changing fonts is alright, but the padding could really be improved.

About the space thing, I use macOS daily, and we still have a lot of leeway in
that regard :). Still lots of screen estate to space things out.

[plasmashell] [Bug 481628] Global menu should still have standard menus available when there is no application open

2024-02-21 Thread Emir SARI
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=481628

Thanks for the reply!

The active window will always get the menu content, no questions asked there.
But, when there are no applications open, and for instance when the window
chooser is active "Plasma Desktop" is displayed (that's my cue that there are
no active application windows), there should be a standard set of items.

Now, I always use the folder mode, so, when in folder mode, there should be
menus for instance,

File - for file operations
Edit - for file operations
View - for display options of the icons
Go - easy navigation to places and mounted disks, last used items, and network
connection options
Window - this is your Plasma navigation menu, windows, virtual desktops,
activities…
Help - standart help access

For the rumoured widget mode (I never use it), these could be configured as you
say, to display whatever is relevant to that mode.

The main logic behind this change it, theoretically, when we use the global
menu for system navigation and cancel the standard bottom Plasma panel,
everything should also be available also in this global menu paradigm without
having to resort to specific widgets. The only sort of required other widget
should be the application launcher menu.

I recognise that this paradigm is very macOS'y, but when we already have the
global menu, we could as well make it worthwhile to have it. It would also
really help folks like me that use macOS regularly to feel more at home with
KDE. It is also a 40 year old paradigm, which is tried extensively and in use
today.

This way also we could make Dolphin integrate more deeply into Plasma. To be
fair, having to launch Dolphin in order to manipulate files on the Desktop
extensively is not ideal at all.

It would be a good idea to increase the weight of the font, make it 1-2 point
better, and apply more slightly more padding between the items. Currently they
look too thin and small on a default configuration.

When there are no applications open, the global menu just sits… empty. However,
it could greatly benefit from having a standard set of menus for file, window,
and location (mounted disks, devices, favourites, places etc.) operations, thus
providing great integration between the Desktop and Dolphin (actually just put
the Dolphin menus in there).

It would be a great enhancement both visually, and functionally.

There is this very cute/affirming feature in macOS, whenever a keyboard
shortcut that is also present in the menus on the menu bar, the menu bar
flashes. For instance, you did copy something, the Edit menu flashes, and it
tells you that the shortcut was invoked successfully.

Would be really nice to see this in Plasma.

In the Welcome to %1 text, the version number is not included. When it is
localised in a language with a different word order, it becomes alienated at
the very end, like "%1 to welcome" + about.version(). Having it like ("Welcome
to %1 %2", name, version) would make it much better.

Now I checked the code out, wanting to fix it myself, but did not understand a
thing :D. That's why opening the report here.

Another thing, some informative messages and error messages end with a period,
and sometimes they do not. This too should be improved, because the addressing
style might change for some languages, also this is interconnected with it.
Addressing style is also important, for the status bar messages, they should be
porcelain sentences, rather than robotic verbs, like "Statement import" etc.
(just making it up).

Greetings, translator here.

Recently I've finished overhauling the long-neglected translations of Skrooge
for my language (tr), however the process was mostly time-consuming. I've
noticed that, although most messages include some sort of context text, it was
not compliant with the current HIG, and some string context diversification was
insufficient.

Some issues that I've encountered:

- Instead of the ellipsis character (…), three separate dots are used (...)
- Text field placeholders do not use the … character, for instance "Search…"
- Capitalisation is mostly inconsistent, see here[1] for the basic guidelines.
This is real helpful when maintaining a professional-looking interface
- Translation contexts should conform to the table listed here[2]. It really
helps the translators to understand where the string is located. It is very
useful to use these, since gettext merges the same strings into a single
message, it cannot conform to different capitalisation styles that might be
needed in different places.
- It would be nice to use standardised characters like right arrow instead of
->, smart quotes instead of plain ' '.

Please feel free to ask for more details if needed, I would be happy to assist.

Status: REPORTED
  Severity: normal

  Target Milestone: ---

Let's say, I have a file without metadata. I have all the information at hand.
I want to fill it out.

When I go into the edit mode, I need to click the dropdown and select what I
want to add ONE BY ONE. This is borderline hostile behaviour. Why not have all
the metadata fields in the open like EVERY OTHER music player out there? So
that I could just TAB my way in?

Another anti-UX behaviour is that, when I add a new field from the drop-down,
it is downright impossible to understand that a field is added to the very
bottom. Also the behaviour is buggy in itself, after clicking the drop-down,
and selecting a field, a poorly padded and poorly positioned error overlay,
that says the data is invalid and it's empty, messes with the layout even more.

Even if I add all the fields one by one, I need to scroll to see all the
fields, is very annoying. There should be a simple way to position everything
nicely like those old boring programs with gazillions of text fields next to
each other. You know, those you enter your personal details and info about your
previous 10 generation of family. Now, that is good layout (read it in Jerry
Seinfeld voice).

[neon] [Bug 479987] New: Neon should check and install related language packs

2024-01-18 Thread Emir SARI
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=479987

Bug ID: 479987
Summary: Neon should check and install related language packs
Classification: KDE Neon
   Product: neon
   Version: unspecified
  Platform: Other
OS: Other
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: general
  Assignee: neon-b...@kde.org
  Reporter: emir_s...@icloud.com
CC: j...@jriddell.org, neon-b...@kde.org, sit...@kde.org
  Target Milestone: ---

Currently, neon looks like it does not search for the related language packs
for the installed software. This leads to untranslated bits in the system. For
instance, one has to install these packs to get somehow improved l10n
experience:

- language-pack-LANG
- manpages-LANG
- hunspell
- hunspell-LANG
- ...

It will also help getting l10n packages for installed software like Firefox.

Extending the scope of the bug, since the layout names are not translated as
well.
