[kactivitymanagerd] [Bug 371150] Black screen is when more than one type of activity is applied

2016-10-25 Thread Ivan Čukić via KDE Bugzilla
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=371150

Damn, it still does not write anything useful - I have a few more steps for you
:)

1. can you install plasma and plasma-related packages with debugging symbols,
and start kdebugdialog5 and check every box that mentions plasma (there is a
search bar on top)?

2. What happens if you put the activity pager on the panel and restart plasma?

3. When you start plasma (from terminal) in an activity that is not blank, and
then press enter a few times in the terminal, just to move the cursor, what is
written out when you try to switch to a 'blank' activity?

p.s. Backup your plasma settings before doing this - ~/.config/plasma* :)

I see now that you submitted the bug that you can not move windows to other
activities as well.

I'm thinking this might be connected, and that it is most likely a distribution
issue.

I have a few things it would be cool if you can test. What is the output of the
following:

kactivities-cli --list-activities

find ~/.* -name kactivitymanagerdrc

for file in `find ~/.* -name kactivitymanagerdrc`; do echo $file; cat $file;
done

Can you get the attachment (Bug Minimal Test), extract it and run the following
in its directory:

qmake
make
./quickwidget

You'll get a small window with a text box. Can you type the special characters
in it? I tried, and it did not work for me, but I'd like a confirmation before
submitting a Qt bug report.

(you will need qmake and qt development packages installed)

I'm going to assume that "Miniprogramme" is "Widgets" in the English version.

Now, the question is what is "Activity monitoring"? Is that some widget you
installed from kde-look, or is it shipped with your distribution?

Can you post the output of the following command:
grep plugin ~/.config/plasma-org.kde.plasma.desktop-appletsrc | sort -u

I'm guessing the problem is in a specific widget that blocks plasma to load,
but we will see :)

Hi Michail,

The list is sorted to have the most recently used activities first. And that
*is* the design decision taken collectively at one of the previous Plasma
developer sprints.

The switcher sorts the list in the same way Alt+Tab sorts the windows.

Cheers,

[plasmashell] [Bug 362774] KDE Activities do not have a well-defined ordering

2016-10-09 Thread Ivan Čukić via KDE Bugzilla
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=362774

> But adding an integer for the order to whatever object represents the activity

Not as simple as that. That integer needs to be synchronized across all
clients, to be introduced in a backwards-compatible manner to the syncing
protocol, and be done so that all possible cases of service supports or doesn't
support reordering, client supports or doesn't support reordering work (since
the service and the client library are released separately).

Then, you need to implement a pretty drag and drop UI for reordering.

Then, you need to deal with the model updates - where does a new activity go?
(and then deal with all the bug reports related to where you chose for it to
appear - like we have for applications in the menu)

> elsewhere) starting from 3 or certainly 4 activities, not dozens

Reordering is (IMO) useful when you want to find something more quickly. If you
have 3 or 4 activities, you can not have problems to find a specific one.

p.s. Nothing here is about the pager specifically. It would be 'easy' to make
the reordering for one thing, if the order does not need to get propagated to
all the other places. And the pager is in the kdeplasma-addons so it can do
whatever it wants to - they are less constrained to fit well into the rest of
the Plasma workspace, than components that actually ship with Plasma. If this
weren't the case, activity pager would not exist in the first place.

Git commit 19d64627d9251adf1a24fec7bdfb9a931d58 by Ivan Čukić.
Committed on 18/09/2016 at 10:52.
Pushed by ivan into branch 'master'.

Sorting activities in the cache alphabetically by name

Many activities clients just show the exact list of results
that the library returns them. in the order that the library uses.

Since this order ends up being shown to the user in quite a few places,
the library now sorts the activities internally.

This affects:
 - KWin (window menu)
 - KCM for window rules

No idea what the 'big picture' mode is.

Does the window have a kwin decoration in that case or not? Does it have a kwin

[plasmashell] [Bug 362774] KDE Activities do not have a well-defined ordering

@Steve

Activities in the switcher are ordered by the most recently used - and that
will not change (at least when the default switcher is concerned).

There were some ideas of allowing the users to group activities, and to create
sub-activities - to have the related ones grouped, but it was decided it would
be an overkill. Activities are meant for macro-management of user's work, and
micro-managing them seems like a 1% use-case.

> Most modern software allows the user to re-position or re-order key
> user-interface
> elements according to their preference. For example, nearly every e-mail app
> allows
> users to customise the order in which folders belonging

Yes, people tend to have a few dozen mail folders. And sub-folders in them. And
this requires being able to reorder them to keep the organization sane.

If you have a few dozen running activities, you are doing something unorthodox
(not to say wrong).

The 'unorthodox' use-cases do not warrant creating a complex mechanism (and the
overhead it would produce) of syncing the order in all the different places.

If you want to have grouped activities - or related as you have put it - you
can prefix their names with the name of the thing that makes them related.
Something like:

 "KDE > Localization"
 "KDE > Development"

It will have the benefit that you get all kde-related activities in the
switcher just by typing 'kde', and in the alphabetical-ordered lists, they will
appear together.

[kirigami] [Bug 368280] New: The main action button thinks it is being clicked when dragged to the side and returned to the centre

Bug ID: 368280
Summary: The main action button thinks it is being clicked when
dragged to the side and returned to the centre
   Product: kirigami
   Version: unspecified
  Platform: Other
OS: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: general
  Assignee: notm...@gmail.com
  Reporter: ivan.cu...@kde.org

When you drag the main action button to the side to 'peek' at the available
actions inside the, say, context menu; then you return it to the centre of the
screen and release it, it will act as if it was clicked on.

Initial:
[(X)]

Drag to the left opens the context menu on the right side
<-
[(X)|##]

Return it back to the centre
->
[(X)]

And release it.

It will trigger the action assigned to it, but it should not.

Reproducible: Always

I also can confirm this, master, kate and kdevelop on Plasma.

The problematic line is emulatedcommandbar.cpp:310 where qApp->notify is
called. It recurses into ... which calls handleKeyPress member function again,
... and so on.

When the call to notify is removed, and function returns false in the if body,
this works as it should.
(just followed the "Ideally, instead of doing this, we would..." part of the
comment written above the if)

Another dirty fix that works is to check the value of
m_suspendEditEventFiltering before setting it to true. I don't know the
internals of KateVi to know whether this is the ok thing to do, it will allow
recursion level 1 and cut anything deeper.

 if (m_edit->isVisible())
 {
+if (m_suspendEditEventFiltering) return false;
 m_suspendEditEventFiltering = true;
 QKeyEvent keyEventCopy(keyEvent->type(), keyEvent->key(),
keyEvent->modifiers(), keyEvent->text(), keyEvent->isAutoRepeat(),
keyEvent->count());
 qApp->notify(m_edit, );

Summary: KWin triggers OSD for the keyboard layout change even

   Version: git master
  Platform: Compiled Sources
OS: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
  Severity: major
  Priority: NOR
 Component: general
  Assignee: kwin-bugs-n...@kde.org
  Reporter: ivan.cu...@kde.org

I have set the keyboard layout changing to (left) Alt+Space.
(have had it for quite some time now and only recently got this issue - maybe
because OSD didn't show up for layout changing before)

Now, every time that I press the space key (without modifiers, with ctrl, with
anything) I get the OSD stating my keyboard layout has been changed.

The interesting thing is that the OSD actually cycles through all the layouts,
even if the layout is never changed.

When I do press Alt+Space, the layout changes as it should, and the OSD pops up
telling me I changed to a wrong one because it thinks the ordinary 'space'
presses changed the layout before.

The icon notifier in the system tray works without issues - it always correctly
shows the current layout.

The place where the OSD is triggered is Xkb::updateModifiers (tested with
bustle).

Reproducible: Always

Not only that. The present windows kwin effect is used with a mouse - you get
an overview of all windows, you know which one to switch to, and you select it.
That window gets focus and you exit the present windows effect.

You can use QML or QWidgets, whichever you are more comfortable with. If you
are using QWidgets, you can use the KActivities::ActivitiesModel class to show
activities in a QListView or something like that (you would probably need to
pass it through a sorting proxy model to order them by name), while for QML you
have also the option to use ActivitySwitcher.Backend.runningActivitiesModel()
which is used in the regular switcher.

You can find the QML part of the code of the normal switcher in
plasma-desktop/desktoppackage/contents/activitymanager

Hi Michail,

The activity switcher is designed to work like a switcher (window switcher for
example - alt+tab, present windows...) and not like a browser (widget
explorer).

This was discussed a few times now, and the consensus was that the main
use-case is that the user knows which activity to switch to. That is where all
the design issues came from.

It would be possible to have an alternative switcher that behaves like you'd
want, but this is not likely to change in the default one.

> So perhaps it will make sense why I preferred the behavior in Plasma 5.5

Now I understand.

Yes, the shortcuts are now meant only as the alt-tab analogue for activities.
Previously, meta+tab was confusing to the users, and this change was requested
and then vetted by the plasma team.

Binding this to mouse buttons is an evil thing to do, but I do understand your
point of view. Mind that this way you will have a problem if you cycle through
activities like that since plasma will think all activities have been used
recently.

My suggestion is to bind one of the mouse buttons to toggling the activity
switcher, and then choosing the exact activity you want to switch to.

If you do not want this, keep reading :)

> On top of those personal workflow preferences there is still the race
> condition with
> "next activity." if "previous activity" returns you to the activity you were
> using previously

The shortcuts have been renamed to "Walk through activities" like it is for
alt+tab and "Walk through windows". The old names should not be visible in the
UI anywhere.

--

Now, while this behaviour is not going to be reverted to the old one, the old
behaviour can be /easily/ replicated. You can get the files next-activity.sh
and prev-activity.sh from [1] and bind them to your mouse buttons.

These scripts will become a part of kactivities-cli command-line utility so
that people do not need to do hacks like the manual keyboard shortcut
invocation like you have done.

I'm unable to replicate this on a live neon (updated to 5.7.2)

If I only press meta+tab, meta+tab, meta+tab it alternates between the two last
used activities - pressing meta+tab switches to the previous one (like with
alt+tab for windows).

If I press meta+tab, tab, tab, it goes through the list from the most recently
used one to the least recently used one. When meta is depressed, the current
one goes to the top of the list since it is now the most recently used one.

When you open the switcher, is the 'erratic' next activity the second on the

How do you propose to do that - if Plasma can not listen to the keyboard? Do it
in KWin and communicate it to Plasma via d-bus?

This I hope will be fixed in 5.7.2. (to be released tomorrow iirc)

Can you update the version - and specify the plasma version you use (not the
plasma framework, but plasma shell)? And, can you re-test when you update to
5.7.2 to see whether this is still an issue?

Activities are spread around in different products unfortunately - Plasma,
KWin, and Activity Manager. This is a KWin issue related to activities, so the
product is KWin and component is 'activities'. Fun, right? :)

Thanks for reporting this.

Does this button work in the activity switcher? (Meta + q by default)

Can you test with Plasma 5.7.2 (or older 5.7) since this seems like a problem
in the installation/packages related to the repository transition we had for
5.6.

[kactivitymanagerd] [Bug 362757] kactivitymanagerd crashes with segfault (usually during or shortly after login)

2016-07-18 Thread Ivan Čukić via KDE Bugzilla
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=362757

Something requests the activity manager to exit, and then it triggers a QSQL
bug that leads to this crash.

Do you have anything strange in your session, does the session terminate when
this happens? This crash is benign as far as the activity manager is concerned
since it happens when it exists, and it keeps its data safe even in the case of
crashes.

Now, I'm not saying that this should be ignored, we should try to see what
exactly is going on :)

Do you have any XCB errors in your .xsession-errors file?

[frameworks-kactivities-stats] [Bug 362198] Plasma Crashes

Which file-system is on /Data?

are you able to edit .config/katerc file (for example, in vim or something) and
save it. Then confirm the data has been written?

Having 92% of a partition used might lead to insufficient disk space problems
since on most file-systems, a few percent (usually around 5%) is 'reserved' for
the root user. Which means that the regular user will never be able to fill the
whole hard drive. I would advise to free more space on the /Data partition.

[kactivitymanagerd] [Bug 360975] Can't change activity-related key bindings

2016-07-18 Thread Ivan Čukić via KDE Bugzilla
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=360975

The per-activity shortcuts are now located in the activity condifuration. You
can open the activity switcher, and click on the 'Configure' button for an
activity. The shortcut setting is on the 'Other' tab.

Now, there is some issue with the activity shortcuts in Plasma 5.7, and that
one is the next item on my TODO list.

As for Alt+H and related shortcuts, there is no relation between the issue with
activity shortcuts, and these. It is a separate issue, and I'd say it is a
setup issue. Neither Alt+H, nor Alt+A are taken by Plasma.

[frameworks-kglobalaccel] [Bug 365808] New: Support for Alt-Tab-like shortcuts

2016-07-18 Thread Ivan Čukić via KDE Bugzilla
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=365808

Bug ID: 365808
   Summary: Support for Alt-Tab-like shortcuts
   Product: frameworks-kglobalaccel
   Version: unspecified
  Platform: Other
OS: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
  Severity: wishlist
  Priority: NOR
 Component: general
  Assignee: mgraess...@kde.org
  Reporter: ivan.cu...@kde.org
CC: kdelibs-b...@kde.org

There is the need for applications outside KWin to use shortcuts that allow
opening some king of browser and allot traversing through that browser by not
releasing the modifier keys, and re-pressing the non-modifier key.

Examples for this include:
- Alt+Tab - Press Alt-Tab, the 'window browser' appears, pressing the Tab
changes the selected window, depressing Alt switches to thiat window and closes
the browser (this one is in KWin)
- Meta-Tab - Press Meta-Tab, the 'activity switcher' appears, pressing the Tab
changes the selected activity, depressing the Meta key closes the switcher and
switches to selected activity.

Until now, this was done by applications being benign key-listeners in X11, but
this is no longer available in wayland. So, another solution needs to be found.

Fixed in 3af24524702e92215a9cce4dcba6b421ac51be4e

ScriptEngine exports the list of activities known to Plasma

Summary:
There is a small time-window when Plasma's internal data
regarding activities is not synchronized with the internal
data of the KActivities library.

This leads to Plasma reporting a different list of activities
than the list of activities it has containments for.

This patch changes the activity list that the ScriptEngine reports
to be the one that Plasma knows about.

[kactivitymanagerd] [Bug 365606] createActivity in plasma script unreliable

2016-07-15 Thread Ivan Čukić via KDE Bugzilla
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=365606

Changing KActivities to be more synchronous is a tad more intrusive than I
hoped it would be - it is designed to have everything as asynchronous as
possible.

The change in the ScriptEngine would be much simpler, and would IMO be what it
should have done in the first place. The proposed patch is here:

[kactivitymanagerd] [Bug 365606] createActivity in plasma script unreliable

2016-07-15 Thread Ivan Čukić via KDE Bugzilla
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=365606

Ok, the final problem found - ScriptEngine::desktopsForActivity tests whether
the activity exists and it is called before the signal that the activity has
been created arrived in plasma.

The problematic situation:
1. The script requests activity creation
2. Activity manager registers a new activity
3. desktopsForActivity tests whether activity exists, it does not as far as
plasma is concerned
4. Plasma gets the signal that the new activity has been created

Now, this might be something to change in the activities framework - not to
wait until the 'new activity' signal arrives before adding it to local cache,
but I'm not sure it would be a good idea. There are currently no
synchronization guarantees in kactivities.

(the weekend is a lonely time on IRC, so I'm posting the real-time findings
here :) )

[kactivitymanagerd] [Bug 365606] createActivity in plasma script unreliable

2016-07-15 Thread Ivan Čukić via KDE Bugzilla
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=365606

After the first problematic part (the above one which is now fixed), the second
problem is that sometimes insertActivity is called before activityAdded and
sometimes after.

insertActivity is called be the script engine, and activityAdded when the
activity manager notifies plasma of the new activity that has been created.

The fun thing is that this is not the core of the problem. Even when the order
is forced, something is wrong - the script returns 0 for the number of desktops
sometimes or most of the time.

[frameworks-kactivities] [Bug 363430] Plasma crashes on right click on the menu

2016-06-21 Thread Ivan Čukić via KDE Bugzilla

> KActivities: Database can not be opened in WAL mode. Check the SQLite version
> (required >3.7.0).
> And whether your filesystem supports shared memory

This means that something is wrong with the setup.

What sqlite version do you have and what file system for the home directory?

This did happen to another user where the problem was not the sqlite version
nor the file system directly, but we haven't found the exact problem. He solved
it by cleaning up the user configs which is a bit of an overkill.

Can you test the following:
- What happens if you remove ~/.local/share/kactivitymanagerd (log out before
deleting, and log back in)
- What happens for the new (empty) user?
- What happens if you remove the above mentioned directory, rename .local to
.local.backup and do a cp -rvi .local.backup .local? (again, log out before
that, and back in after you finish)

Cheers,
Ivan

@martin

I can do that for now, but it means the feature will be broken until we find a
way to do it via kwin.

@sebas

I'm sorry if I sounded like "i don't use it, I don't care". I was just asking
for help since I have no idea how to handle this on wayland. And without
wayland setup, issues like these slip up.

In the past, I missed to guard against a few X-related things, and once even
guarded something that Martin later said was not necessary (and the guards
passed all other reviewers)
