Any chance you could add such a feature to KDE Discover?

[neon] [Bug 378556] New: Can not open plasma-discover-updater (Update Manager)

2017-04-08 Thread N . W .
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=378556

Bug ID: 378556
Summary: Can not open plasma-discover-updater (Update Manager)
   Product: neon
   Version: unspecified
  Platform: unspecified
OS: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: general
  Assignee: neon-b...@kde.org
  Reporter: nw9165-3...@yahoo.com
CC: j...@jriddell.org, neon-b...@kde.org, sit...@kde.org
  Target Milestone: ---

Hi,

running KDE neon User Edition here (installed from
neon-useredition-current.iso).

As far as I can tell, there should be an app called "Update Manager", see
following screenshot:
https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-P1qUTBh9Qac/VxEr62zv1nI/E8g/QMYEB2zCu3MxiW1OUja8BeNr9HedxNSBwCLcB/s1600/11%2BSoftware%2BUpdate%2BManager.jpg
(Source:
http://www.distroscreens.com/2016/04/kde-neon-1604-14-04-2016-screenshots.html
)

And according to the following page, apparently it should be provided by the
package "plasma-discover-updater", see:
https://wiki.ubuntuusers.de/Plasma_Aktualisierungsverwaltung/

Apparently it should be available via Applications -> System -> Update Manager.

But it's not there. According to muon, the status of that package is
"Installed".

However, when trying to start it from the terminal I get:

user@machine:~$ plasma-discover-updater
The program 'plasma-discover-updater' is currently not installed. You can
install it by typing:
sudo apt install plasma-discover-updater

When trying that, I get:

user@machine:~$ sudo apt install plasma-discover-updater
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
plasma-discover-updater is already the newest version
(5.9.4-0neon+16.04+build67).
Starting pkgProblemResolver with broken count: 0
Starting 2 pkgProblemResolver with broken count: 0
Done

Then:

user@machine:~$ plasma-discover-updater
The program 'plasma-discover-updater' is currently not installed. You can
install it by typing:
sudo apt install plasma-discover-updater

What's going on there? Could you please fix it?

By the way: This even happens on a standard 1920x1080 monitor when display

So, it has nothing to do with display scaling or force fonts DPI.

I've received the update to KDE Neon 5.9.0 now and the icons in the thumbnail
preview frame are smaller now, but they are mostly pixelated.

The app icons for Dolphin, Firefox, Audacious, System Settings, Chromium, KGet,
Konsole and many others are pixelated.

I've found one app icon which is not pixelated: KMail.

Most others are pixelated. It looks like they are very poorly scaled up or down
or whatever.

Same issue here, running KDE Neon 5.8.5 with official VirtualBox PPA.

When trying to launch VirtualBox from the icon-only task manager, the following

Access denied to /usr/lib/virtualbox/VirtualBox

Launching it from the normal application launcher menu works just fine though.

Hi,

I want to pin the Qt interface of Audacious to the icon-only task manager. When
doing so via enabling "Show a launcher when not running"/"Pin", that launcher
will always launch the GTK interface of Audacious, i.e. the following command:

audacious

However, I want the launcher to launch Audacious with the Qt interface, i.e.
with the following command:

audacious --qt

I would have expected that I could edit the launcher by right-clicking on it
and selecting "Edit launcher" to alter the command used by the launcher.
However, there is no such option.

Could you please fix that?

What commands would you use for that inside a running KDE Neon 5.8.5?

(In reply to Eike Hein from comment #9)
> That said, it would be technically pretty difficult to do, perhaps - I don't
> think minimized windows are part of the stacking order, so there no way to
> find out what "the most recent window of that group" was without tons of
> tracking we currently don't do.

Checked it again on Windows 10. Actually, Windows 10 does not
minimize/un-minimize in this case. Upon clicking, it simply closes the window
thumbnail previews.

That is still better than falling back to that group popup dialog in KDE.

May I ask what's the reasoning behind falling back to the group popup dialog?

I don't see any advantage in falling back to that group popup dialog. I'd say
it would be better to simply close the window thumbnail previews upon click.

And I also do not see any advantage in bringing up Present Windows, because,
why would you, you already have the window preview thumbnails.

But, again, minimizing/un-minimizing would be even better. Even though MS
Windows is not doing it like that ;). So, here's actually a feature request
that does not ask to replicate something from Windows but doing something
differently ;).

I have "Present Windows" enabled in KWin and have it set to the default
settings and I can successfully toggle it with CTRL+F7/F9/F10.

> Failing either it falls back to the same popup dialog the regular TM
> shows for a group.

See above. Present Windows is working on the hardware here, yet clicking on an
icon-only task manager launcher with more than one open window does not bring
up Present Windows. Instead, it brings up this
https://bugs.kde.org/attachment.cgi?id=103709.

What could be causing this?

Besides: I don't really want it to bring up the Present Windows effect. I would
like it to minimize/maximize the most recent window of that group. Just as it
is being done for a launcher that has just one open Window. And just as it is
being done in Windows 7/8/8.1/10. Is it possible to configure it like that? Or
is there any chance you could add an option for that? IMHO this would make for
a much better workflow and a better UX.

I don't think so. There already is a very good indicator to show if the window
is active or not: The text and the buttons in the title bar become grayed out
on inactive windows. It's done like that for many other DE's as well as other
OSes, so that's actually what the expected behavior would be.

(In reply to Hugo Pereira Da Costa from comment #4)
> The dark background for the active window title in the breeze-light

See above. You already have the text and the buttons become grayed out for
inactive windows, that's enough to distinguish it.

When clicking on the launcher, it suddenly looks like this:
https://bugs.kde.org/attachment.cgi?id=103709

But I would expect that clicking on the launcher simply toggles between
minimizing/maximizing the most recent window of that group, just as it does
when clicking on a launcher which has just one open window.

Hi,

when hovering over an app icon on the icon-only task manager, the thumbnail
frame pops up, even if there's no open window to show.

Inside the frame, there's huge version of the app icon.

I find this rather intrusive. Is this really necessary? IMHO that thumbnail
frame should not pop up if there's no open window.

Instead, a simple tooltip mentioning the application's name would suffice IMHO.

Nope, not the case here. Running KDE Neon 5.8.5 and the window decoration

focus. When the window has focus, it's dark, even when the color is set to

Hi,

the 16px and 22px icons are monochrome. KMail uses 22px folder icons. Dolphin
also uses 22px icons for the detail view by default.

Those monochrome icons make everything look very bland in KMail and Dolphin.

For Dolphin, there's a workaround, i.e. increase the icon size in the Dolphin
detail view to at least 32px.

For KMail I do not see an option to increase the icon size (is there any such
option?).

Why do the small icons have to be monochrome?

Summary: Clicking on app icon in icon-only task manager does
not minimize/maximize window when more than one
instances of an app are open
   Product: plasmashell
   Version: master
  Platform: unspecified
OS: All
Status: UNCONFIRMED

  Target Milestone: 1.0

Hi,

with the icon-only task manager, you can click on an app icon to
minimize/maximize the corresponding window.

However, this does not work when more than one instances of a certain app are
open. Clicking on the icon then just results in the window thumbnails to
disappear, which is not useful.

Also tested it on 5.9, same issue.

Could you please fix that?

[plasmashell] [Bug 375684] New: Please improve app status indicators in icon-only task manager

2017-01-28 Thread N . W .
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=375684

Bug ID: 375684
Summary: Please improve app status indicators in icon-only task
manager
   Product: plasmashell
   Version: master
  Platform: unspecified
OS: All
Status: UNCONFIRMED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: Icons-only Task Manager
  Assignee: h...@kde.org
  Reporter: nw9165-3...@yahoo.com
CC: plasma-b...@kde.org
  Target Milestone: 1.0

Hi,

the app status indicators in the icon-only task manager of Plasma are really
hard to distinguish.

When an app is launched, there is a very faint bar next to the icon, which is
supposed to indicate that the app is running without the window being on top.
This bar is really hard to see.

Once a window is on top, this bar will change to a faint dark blue color,
indicating that the window is on top, which is still not really good to see.

When hovering over an app which is not running, the icon of the app is lighting
up. When hovering over an app which is running, the icon is lighting up and
there's a blue colored rectangle around the icon.

I know you said you don't care what MS Windows is doing, but Windows 10 is
doing a better job at this.

Windows 10 is doing it like this:

When an app is not running, there is no indicator, there's only the icon. When
hovering over that icon, theres a faint gray rectangle around the icon,
indicating that the cursor is hovering over it.

When an app is running, there's a blue bar next to the icon, regardless of the
window being on top or not. That way it's much easier to see which apps are
running.

When the window of an app is on top, a bright gray rectangle is being drawn
around the icon to highlight that this is the currently active window.

All in all, it feels a lot better to navigate the icon-only task manager of
Windows 10 compared to the icon-only task manager of Plasma, due to the reasons
mentioned above.

Any chance you could do something about that?

[plasmashell] [Bug 375680] New: [5.9] Hovering over task manager window thumbnail no longer gives visual clue about selected window

2017-01-28 Thread N . W .

Hi,

thanks a lot for the revamped task manager window tumbnail previews and for
having fixed https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=375668 and
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=375669 with Plasma 5.9.

There's one regression though:

When having more than one instances of one app grouped together in one icon and
then hovering over the icon, the window preview thumbnails show up.

When then hovering over the thumbnails, there no longer is any visual clue for
which thumbnail / window you're hovering over.

In Plasma 5.8, there was a visual clue due to the close icon being shown when
hovering over a certain thumbnail. With 5.9, the close icon is always present
on all thumbnails.

Could you please fix that?

And could you possibly add some kind of additional highlighting over a
thumbnail when hovering the cursor over it (i.e. changing the color of the
frame around the thumbnail when hovering the cursor over it)?

Has this issue been submitted to the Qt devs? If not: Where would one report
it?

All I can say is that the task manager thumbnails always look pixelated on KDE
Neon 5.8.5 running on an Intel Core i7-6700K.

Oh, and by the way: The ALT+TAB thumbnails are also affected, even when setting
KWin to "Accurate" scaling. Some ALT+TAB thumbnails are pixelated (like the
task manager thumbnails) and some are smooth. Is this intentional?

I am not really seeing "more information" in there. You said "not based on a
scaled down thumbnail", yet https://community.kde.org/KWin/Window_Metadata
talks about window thumbnail previews (albeit not live updated previews)...

And the other things there, like "Task Manager Progress", have nothing to do
with the thumbnails. What's being described in "Task Manager Progress" over
there is what MS Windows provides since Windows 7 and is also available in
Canonical's Unity. But it's about the app icon in the task manager on the
panel, not the thumbnail that appears when hovering over the icon.

So, could you please elaborate what you mean with "not based on a scaled down
thumbnail"? Because https://community.kde.org/KWin/Window_Metadata does not
explain it.

Okay, thanks a lot :) , that seems to work. And since MS Windows also doesn't
have a GUI option for it, I guess we can resolve here.

[plasmashell] [Bug 375669] Please add option to adjust size of window thumbnails

2017-01-28 Thread N . W .
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=375669

Well, I'd like to make them smaller. That's because I have "Force fonts DPI"
set to 120, which makes the fonts bigger, which in turn makes the window
thumbnails grow unreasonably in size, because their surrounding frame grows
with the larger font.

By the way, the app icon under the thumbnail also is unreasonably large.

Here's how it looks in Windows 7:
https://i-msdn.sec.s-msft.com/dynimg/IC420541.png

Here's how it looks in Windows 10:
http://superuser.com/questions/958690/how-to-make-windows-10-taskbar-thumbnail-previews-bigger

So, while being at it, could you please also:

- Reduce the size of the frame around the thumbnails
- Reduce the size of the app icon inside the frame around the thumbnails
- Reduce the overall font size of the text inside the frame around the
thumbnails
- Move the app icon and text from below the thumbnail to above the thumbnail
(just like in Windows 7/8/8.1/10)

> >How can one also enable it for the taskbar window thumbnails?

> You cannot.

But why not? Could you please elaborate? Why does it work for the ALT+TAB
thumbnails, but not for the task manager thumbnails?

Could you please elaborate?

It would be much appreciated, because the ALT+TAB thumbnails with Lanczos
scaling look _much_ better than the task manager thumbnails with nearest
neighbour scaling.

I have recently switched to KDE because it's the only DE which has an icon-only
task manager and task manager window thumbnails out of the box, just like
Windows 7/8/8.1/10, which is a very good thing.

However, on MS Windows, the thumbnails look nice (due to Lanczos scaling),
whereas on KDE they look ugly and kinda unreadable (due to the absence of
Lanczos scaling).

It would be a huge improvement if the task manager thumbnails would also scale
using Lanczos. And technically it should work, since it also works just fine
for the ALT+TAB thumbnails, right?

Hi,

when hovering the cursor over an icon on the task manager, a window thumbnail
appears. However, there's a certain delay until the thumbnail appears.

On MS Windows, this delay can be adjusted.

Could you please add an option to adjust this delay? IMHO the delay is too long
by default.

Hi,

the window thumbnails that show up when hovering the cursor over an icon on the
task manager are not stacked vertically with a vertical panel. Instead, they
are being aligned horizontally.

On Windows 7/8/8.1/10, the window thumbnails are stacked vertically with a
vertical taskbar, so that would be the expected behavior.

Could you please fix it or add an option to make the window thumbnails stack
vertically instead of horizontally?

And there's no kernel parameter for it, see:

So if the Wayland compositor does not provide an option to adjust it, you're
pretty much stuck.

I guess this is the list of all those "connector properties":

Hi,

when using X, it's possible to adjust the Intel driver's Broadcast RGB setting
via xrandr like this:

xrandr --output OUTPUT --set "Broadcast RGB" "Full"

or:

xrandr --output OUTPUT --set "Broadcast RGB" "Limited 16:235"

or:

xrandr --output OUTPUT --set "Broadcast RGB" "Automatic"

Unfortunately the Intel driver now sets this to "Automatic" by default and
"Automatic" doesn't really set it properly all of the time:

https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=94921

amdgpu and radeon apparently are also planned to get options to to adjust the
RGB range / color space, see:

https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=83226

When asking on #wayland on the freenode IRC channel, I was told that such an
option would need to be added to the corresponding Wayland compositor and that
I should submit a feature request for the corresponding Wayland compositor.

So, could you please add an option to adjust the RGB range?

So, how can one enable Lanczos scaling for the taskbar window thumbnails?

When choosing "Accurate" on KDE Neon running on an Intel Core i7-6700K, the
ALT+TAB window thumbnails are being rendered using Lanczos, but the taskbar
windows thumbnails are not.

Why?

How can one also enable it for the taskbar window thumbnails?
