My laptop's CPU is an i5 7300hq. Also, one thing to note is that I did a system
update lately, and the higher CPU usage i was having before dropped a little
bit even with the icc profile set, and the frame drops lessened a little bit
after an update on Plasma 6 Alpha lately. I don't know what caused the
performance increase, but somehow it's slightly better.

There is a kind of bad mouse judder in KDE Neon that is only really noticeable
in the overview effect when you have an icc profile set. I know KDE's latest
neon unstable has later packages for Plasma 6 than what Arch has currently, so
there might've been an update that messed up performance again anyway. Here's
the list of the latest KDE-Unstable repository for Arch:

This issue was fixed but seems to have come back in the new Plasma 6 beta. The
mouse is again lagging when composer performance drops. I tested this before in
the earlier Plasma 6 Alpha, and the mouse lag was completely gone even when the
desktop was running at 10 fps.

Yeah, I'm using an Intel iGPU. I didn't have any of the issues that's mentioned
in that bug report, but the mouse lagginess was fixed, and now it's back to
being bad again. Maybe not every Intel iGPU has the issue mentioned here:

Is there env veriable that can be set to get this back or no?

Everything is good now the mouse great again. This issue does not affect me, so
I can set KWIN_DRM_DISABLE_BUFFER_READABILITY_CHECKS=0. with no issues
whatsoever, I don't get the stuttering or half-fps issues.

Also, when readability checks are disabled, I get slight micro freezes as well.
I was wondering what was causing that. It seems my Intel iGPU actually get
performance issues when readability checks is disabled, and i guess some older
igpu's get performance issues with it enabled. This is definitely a strange
issue, at least for me. I get way better performance with it on.

Never mind about the micro freezes I mentioned before. After a few days of
testing, the micro freezes seem to happen whether I have the readability checks
enabled or disabled. Enabling readability checks doesn't make the micro freezes
any worse or better, but it makes the mouse lag under heavy loads go away, so
I'll leave it enabled since it's not what's causing the freezes; something else
is.

Mpv running with vulkan and vulkan-hwdec on the nvidia gpu with mpv's
high-quality profile set FSR and smooth video project running to get videos to
60 fps to get the soap opera effect. I know MPV is using allot of my CPU
because of all these things, around 60% to 70% according to the quality of the
video, but I get no frame drops. The computer is still capable, mostly, but
then when the ICC profile is set, that's when frame drops and the stuttering
starts. Everything is just a slightly worst experience performance-wise, and
games suffer fps drops as well.

After this update, I noticed my network drive thumbnails were not showing
anymore, and I figured out that the setting Skip previews for remote files
above a certain size is set to no previews. That's the reason why it's not
showing any previews, but I thought this setting was only for network drives.
Why does it affect vaults? That seems like a bug. In Dolphin, go to Configure >
Interface > Previews and increase the size of the remote file previews. See if
that works for you as well.

I thought this issue didn't affect me before, even though I was indeed getting
freezes. I realized it when the patch to disable hardware cursors stopped the
freezes on Plasma 6, so I left it disabled, but lately I decided to enable
hardware cursors again using the env veriable and noticed the freezing not
happening anymore. I don't know what it is; it could be a MESA update or
something in Plasma 6 RC2. I don't know what changed, but the freezing issue
with HW cursors is suddenly gone. I'm really glad that I don't have to use
software cursors anymore because I notice the slowness of the mouse movement
under heavy load, and that does not feel nice at all. Hopefully the next thing
that gets fixed is the fact that the entire plasma desktop's slows down from a
single graphical program running slowly i tested with compositor-killer.

2023-11-19 Thread Rean
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=477223

Bug ID: 477223
Summary: Setting an icc profile causes reduced system
performance.
Classification: Plasma
   Product: kwin
   Version: 5.27.80
  Platform: Arch Linux
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: wayland-generic
  Assignee: kwin-bugs-n...@kde.org
  Reporter: tech...@protonmail.com
  Target Milestone: ---

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Use Wayland
2. Apply an icc profile in Display Configuration

OBSERVED RESULT
Reduced performance, especially when playing demanding video playback and
gaming; it also causes higher CPU usage. I even noticed laggy, delayed mouse
movement.

EXPECTED RESULT
Normal performance.

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Arch Linux/KDE Plasma:
KDE Plasma Version: 5.27.80
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.245.0
Qt Version: 6.6.0

2023-11-19 Thread Rean
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=477223

Oh, some more testing I did was with MPV itself. I set the color profile inside
mpv's config, removed the one from the display configuration, and then played a
high-res video in mpv. The results are the same. I simply get the same frame
drops in MPV as I do setting icc from display configuration. I tested mpv in
x11 as well with the icc profile set the same way; I didn't change the
mpv.config, and there were no frame drops. I also spent time testing KDE Plasma
Wayland 5.27.9 with the icc profile set in mpv because it does work there from
mpv; you can tell by the colors looking different, so I know for sure it works
in mpv under Wayland in 5.27.9, and I also see no frame drops there, so this
performance drop issue seems to be specific to setting a icc profile in Plasma
5.27.80's wayland session only.

Damn, there is no way to edit a comment I made here, ok, this part where I said
"under Wayland in 5.27.9, and I also see no frame drops there." This is wrong;
ignore this. I tested again, and there is definitely the same performance drop,
just not as bad as 5.27.80.

2023-11-19 Thread Rean
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=477223

I tested again, and it seems like the reason I didn't see any frame drops in
X11 was because when mpv goes into fullscreen, the compositor is disabled, in
turn giving better performance. If compositing is allowed, I get the same frame
drops in x11, but there is no way to disable compositing in Wayland like in X11
because Wayland manages windows, etc. with the compositor, and if that dies,
the entire session dies anyway. I thought the compositing in Wayland was
supposed to be more efficient. Why does the compositor cause dropped frames
like on X11 and cause applications to get higher CPU usage when using an icc
profile?

Is this the issue you speak of? If so, then here is a recording of it happening
to me while I have an icc profile set. It doesn't happen all the time, but it
only happens when an icc profile is enabled: https://streamable.com/budmuk.
Look at the task bar and the glitchiness in Kicker.

I'm going to add my experience with Wayland and X11 performance. I hope this
can be addressed in the future. My Plasma 5.26.4 is powered by an Intel Pentium
G2030T (2) 2.60GHz. I tested both X11 and Wayland with blur and contrast
enabled as well as the FPS effect. I did the same tests on both X11 and
Wayland, and I noticed that any blur effect that fills the entire screen makes
the framerate drop as low as 40 in Wayland, while on X11 I get 60 fps with the
same blurred window filling the entire screen. Also, I get higher render usage
with animations and moving windows around in Wayland vs. what I get in X11. I
don't think Wayland's performance should be this bad.
