The KDE is using application preference order: http://imgur.com/RfGGrOA

My opinion is that this is a good way to put the applications to the order.

This has been wroted at the freedesktop mailing list:

Why plugings are better:

- The plugins are available for the all KDE (Dolphin, Plasma, Gwenview,
Konqueror, ...)
- There is an option to create a better plugin.
- User decides: What plugins are needed.

If you have problems - Write to the distribution forum or to the KDE Forum (

The KDE is using the Freedesktop standards & specifications:
https://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/

The bug 354179 report has a link to the Freedesktop specification: 'Association
between MIME types and applications' -
https://specifications.freedesktop.org/mime-apps-spec/mime-apps-spec-1.0.html

There is the lookup order for mimeapps.list.

The Dolphin 16.04.2 & kde-cli-tools 5.6.5 is saving the file associations to
the $XDG_CONFIG_HOME/mimeapps.list i.e $HOME/.config/mimeapps.list

Ubuntu package: kdeconnect 0.8 - http://packages.ubuntu.com/xenial/kdeconnect
Is installing: http://packages.ubuntu.com/xenial/amd64/kdeconnect/filelist
"/usr/share/kde4/services/kdeconnect.protocol
/usr/share/kde4/services/kdeconnectsendfile.desktop"

These are for the KDE4. The Ubuntu Dolphin package:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/xenial/dolphin is for the KF5.

The KF5 services are at: 'kf5-config --path service'

So this is a Uubntu packaging problem. Should be filed at Launchpad - open bugs
at the Launcpad/Ubuntu: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/kdeconnect/+bugs

As a workaround the you could try to link the service files to the KF5 path.

Dolphin is using KDE preview plugins. With the KDE4 the Microsoft Windows
Executables plugin is part of the kde-runtime. The plugin is (probably) not yet
ported to the KDE frameworks 5. Some of the ported kde-runtime plugins are now
part of the kio-extras.

Meanwhile - Workarounds

Use the KDE4 applications - The KDE4 applications can use the KDE4
thumbnailers. The Konqueror can use the KDE4 'Microsoft Windows Executables'
thumbnailer. There is also the dolphinpart4 -
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Dolphin

There is a third party generic thumbnailer:
http://kde-apps.org/content/show.php/Keneric+KDE+(KF5)+thumbnailer?content=174485
. It can show the MS Windows executable thumbnails:

Meanwhile - A workaround to disable unwanted solid/device actions

The KDE is checking the users home directory and using the desktop files from
the home before using the system desktop files.

At this the /usr/share/solid/actions/ directory has a solid-action.desktop
file.

1) Locate solid/actions directory
$ locate solid/actions

2) Make a solid/actions directory to home directory
$ mkdir -p ~/.local/share/solid/actions/

3) Make an empty desktop file to the home solid/actions
touch ~/.local/share/solid/actions/solid-action.desktop

With the KDE4 - Desktop: KDE 4.14.2 Distro: Debian 8.3 jessie

When plug-in a usb stick there are options to

- Open with File Manager
Image: http://i.imgur.com/KAFtkD6.png

1) Solid actions are at:
$ locate solid/actions
/usr/share/kde4/apps/solid/actions

2) Prefix in $HOME used to write files is:
$ kde4-config --localprefix
/home/rog131/.kde/
=> Path to solid actions at home: /home/rog131/.kde/share/apps/solid/actions

3) Making solid/actions directory to home directory
$ mkdir -p ~/.kde/share/apps/solid/actions
Alternative is to use the Device Actions Editor and make a test/new /Add)
action. It will create a correct path.

4) Making an empty desktop file to the home solid/actions
touch ~/.kde/share/apps/solid/actions/gwenview_importer.desktop

This wish/bug report has filed against the kcm_deviceautomounter and assigned
to Torrie Fischer.

I think that an alternative (better ?) would be the kcm_solid-actions (solid
device actions configuration module / solid device actions editor) current
maintainer seems to the Ben Cooksley.

Maintainer information is from KDE System Settings > Device Actions > Help >
About solid device actions editor; command: kcmshell5 solid-actions.

Is the Dolphin showing the thumbnails ?
What is the format of the missing thumbnails ?
Do you have a thumbnailer for the missing thumbnails ?
Can you upload an example file which the wallpaper chooser can't show the
thumbnail ?

Same kind of - [SOLVED] No wallpaper preview on desktop settings in KDE :

The 'Root Actions Servicemenu' is an add-on from the http://kde-apps.org .
Direct link:
http://kde-apps.org/content/show.php/Root+Actions+Servicemenu?content=48411 .

Some distributions have added it as a default context menu.

The developers contact information for the ' comments, criticism and
improvement suggestions' can be found from the KDE Apps page and from the
48411-rootactions_servicemenu.tar.gz package. There is a 'README' file.

As told:
https://quickgit.kde.org/?p=spectacle.git=commit=51b7367513832c682506cc323664f2e236916c2c

"BUG: 357120
FIXED-IN: 16.04 "

If you want to use the fixed version now you could grab the snaphot and compile
it.

At here, with the Arch, getting the Spectacle snapshot -
spectacle-51b7367.tar.gz.
Wrapping it as spectacle-git: compiling, installing ... the Spectacle is
remembering rectangular region when retaking screenshot.

It seems, that the PSD thumbnailer is broken -
https://git.reviewboard.kde.org/r/125790/ - Testing done comment: "I still
don't get any thumbnails for PSD files, though.".

The thumbnailer is part of kio-extras. Testig at there with Arch/kio-extras
15.12.0-1:

- the PSD thumbnailing is not working
- I can use the 'keneric' thumbnailer to thumbnail the PSD files.

Maybe a bug report against the kio-extras helps ?

A workaround, working at here, disabling the PSD thumbnailing from the 'Images'
thumbnailer and adding an option to thumbnail with the 'keneric':

[kdemultimedia] [Bug 356348] HEVC Videos Not Showing in Preview Mode

> Does that mean I should update my libraries or try updating KDE Plasma 4 to
> Plasma 5?
> Does this problem occur in KDE Plasma 5?

It is not the KDE libraries - It is the libav/ffmpeg libraries.

Short : The Debian & Ubuntu decided to use the ffmpeg fork libav /1/. The
Ubuntu 14.04 is using libav 9.18 /2/. Ubuntu has a stable release policy /3/ to
not update old packages. There will be bug fixes for the serious bugs.

When I was using the Ubuntu 14.04 I added the HEVC support to the KDE
thumbnailer by:

- compiling an own local version of the current ffmpeg
- rebuilding the ffmpegthumbs so it is using the local ffmpeg not the distro
libav.

By my knowledge the Mint /4/ is using the Ubuntu packages but I don't know
witch version is using the newest released version.

With the Ubuntu KF5 thumbnailer there is the bug:
