[kate] [Bug 375362] New: Build plugin: add Python mode
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=375362 Bug ID: 375362 Summary: Build plugin: add Python mode Product: kate Version: 16.08 Platform: Other OS: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: wishlist Priority: NOR Component: general Assignee: kwrite-bugs-n...@kde.org Reporter: codestr...@posteo.org Target Milestone: --- To make Python development easier here is suggestion for the extension of the Build plugin: - Add an option (with user-definable shortcut) to run the current file with a (customizable) python interpreter - Current (or all open) file(s) will automatically be saved. - It should use Terminal tool view to automatically enter the python command (similar to the 'cd' command when auto-sync for directories is enabled) - If the Terminal is blocked the blocking process should be killed (maybe with user confirmation) This mode could be useful for other interpreters than Python. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are watching all bug changes.

This was a handy feature when one starts dragging a file from dolphin with the intent to place a symlink on the desktop. Could the function be restored? [plasmashell] [Bug 355679] Add "Display Configuration" to Desktop toolbox and/or desktop context menu

Initially, the font was very small. On the internet I found this article: https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/219058/scaling-the-desktop-kde which helped to find the scaling option: System Settings/Configure Desktop → Display and Monitor → Display Configuration → (Scroll down) -> Click "Scale Display" button. For German installations (which his was) the naming on each step is different and therefore harder to find out. If not on the first level of the menu, one could add a submenu "Display" with the following options: - Resolution (-> opens Displays dialog) - Scaling (e.g. for HiDPI displays) (-> opens Displays dialog) - Multiscreen setup (-> opens Displays dialog) Each would open the same dialog but I think it helps getting the user quickly up and running with a properly configured display. [ksysguard] [Bug 388581] Option to show combined CPU load history
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=388581 --- Comment #4 from Gregor Mi --- Thanks for pointing this out. I have 4 cores, therefore I went to the graph properties > Scales and set the graph range to 0 - 400 %. I used then this command $ dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/null (see https://stackoverflow.com/questions/2925606/how-to-create-a-cpu-spike-with-a-bash-command) to generate 100 % load for one, two, three and four cores to verify. It works fine. Two usability things: 1. When I had the scale at 100 % (automatic) there it was not intuitive to see that the graph was "overflowing" when the processor was loaded more than 100 %. 2. A "Show combined CPU usage" option could either normalize to 100 % or automatically adjust the scale to the fitting percentage. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are watching all bug changes.

[plasmashell] [Bug 389499] New: Ability to set keyboard shortcut to add and remove virtual desktop

I found out that in the year 2010 a similar wish was filed: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=221115. I don't know if I should add comments to this bug because its status is WONTFIX. So, here are my findings after playing around a bit with the virtual desktops in Plasma: 1) If the user has currently only one virtual desktop, how would he easily add a second one? Because the Pager Applet is not visible in that case. I would say, having the ability to add a keyboard shortcut for the "Add virtual desktop" action could be a way to solve this problem. 2) If the user wants to close the current virtual desktop there is a context menu action "Remove virtual desktop" in the Pager Applet. For a faster workflow and consistency with 1), it would be helpful to also have the ability to set a keyboard shortcut. The idea of the student didn't came out of the blue but he actually wanted to know how to set a shortcut in Windows 10 where the virtual desktop concept has been finally added by default, see https://www.howtogeek.com/197625/how-to-use-virtual-desktops-in-windows-10/ (with screenshots). I just found out that they also have keyboard shortcuts for adding and removing virtual desktops, see https://www.addictivetips.com/windows-tips/windows-10-virtual-desktop-shortcuts: Meta+Ctrl+D to open a new desktop and Meta+Ctrl+F4 to close the current desktop. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are watching all bug changes.

[plasmashell] [Bug 389545] New: Inform about critical system messages, e.g. CPU cooling problem
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=389545 Bug ID: 389545 Summary: Inform about critical system messages, e.g. CPU cooling problem Product: plasmashell Version: master Platform: Other OS: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: wishlist Priority: NOR Component: general Assignee: k...@davidedmundson.co.uk Reporter: codestr...@posteo.org CC: plasma-b...@kde.org Target Milestone: 1.0 Today, I ran into a CPU cooling problem on my laptop. I needed to find out a bunch of things to track the problem down. Maybe this report can help to implement something into Plasma to inform and warn users about similar problems. I use openSUSE Tumbleweed 20180109. ### Suddenly the system shuts down I was compiling KDE with kdesrc-build and after 15 minutes or so the system shuts down. I restarted the system and ran kdesrc-build again. After a few minutes the system shuts down again. I did it again and after even shorter time then the system shuts down. This is not normal, so I started to investigate. ### Investigate shutdown cause with journalctl I ran $ sudo journalctl -a because I read that this is the place to start to look for problems. I saw that there is a huge amount of messages; and to scroll to the end took such a long time that aborted the command. With $ sudo journalctl -S 2018-01-28 I could narrow the search down. Looking through the messages I found this: Jan 28 09:38:50 linux-vu7g kernel: thermal thermal_zone0: critical temperature reached (89 C), shutting down ### Use KSystemLog Later I tried to find the error using KSystemLog but that was possible because it didn't show enough messages. I wasn't able to configure it to show more messages. I found the setting "Maximum lines displayed" and increased it from 1000 to 5000 but that didn't have any effect. Bug report later. I wonder which GUI tool is currently recommended for Plasma to read the system log history? ### Find out the meaning of the critical temparture message I searched the web about the thermal error message from the log and found this: "This is a really serious message. The computer only does this when there's a cooling problem. Under no circumstance the temperature should reach values this high. This immediate shutdown is an action triggered by the thermal sensor that operates independent of the operating system. It prevents the processor from getting damaged beyond repair. The bottomline is you can't prevent this protection measure and you should not ever want to do this if it had been possible. What you should do first now is checking what's wrong with cooling and solve the problem. I've experienced this problem a few years ago and it turned out to be the paste between the heatsink and the processor." (https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/212628/critical-temperature-reached-dont-shut-down) So, two questions arise: 1) Is this really a hardware problem? Because I thought the CPU is throttled automatically to avoid fatal temperature. 2) How can I monitor the CPU temperature to avoid a sudden shutdown? ### Monitor CPU temperature I found some hints for tools to monitor the CPU temperature here: https://askubuntu.com/questions/15832/how-do-i-get-the-cpu-temperature This command can be used without installing any new tool: $ cat /sys/class/thermal/thermal_zone0/temp which shows one number, e.g. 61000, which means 61 °C. I used this to watch it: $ watch cat /sys/class/thermal/thermal_zone0/temp I also installed the package hardinfo which also installs the sensors package. Hardinfo is supposed to also the CPU temperature but the corresponding fields were empty. The command $ sensors however shows some useful information on the console, among others this one: acpitz-virtual-0 Adapter: Virtual device temp1:+61.0°C (crit = +89.0°C) temp2:+61.0°C (crit = +89.0°C) Note that also the critical temperature is shown. Other suggested GUI tools like psensors or xsensors were not available in my software repos so I didn't try those. For Plasma I found these the KDE store: - "Simple System Monitor" (https://store.kde.org/p/1173509/) which among other things shows the CPU temperature. Works out of the box. - "Thermal Monitor " (https://store.kde.org/p/998915/). Has to be configured manually. Is there also a built-in Plasma tool which is recommened to watch CPU temperature? ### Way forward Next, I will read this article to find out what is wrong with my laptop: https://itsfoss.com/reduce-overheating-laptops-linux/ As indicated at the beginning, it would be nice if Plasma could tell the user - e.g. after the system has started up - if there are any critical log messages that require the user's attention. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are watching all bug changes.

Observation: He is a mouse user knowing how to use a context menu. I have to explain that he has to remember to use the Shift key to make the correct option visible in the menu. In this case we have the "out of vision - out of thought" problem. Thoughts: - One could show both delete options ("Delete to Trash", "Delete permanently") in the context menu - For large files on external drives (>= 100 MB) there could be a question if the user wants to delete permanently. - (Everything would be better if we had the new context-sensitive menu bar in Dolphin :-) -- You are receiving this mail because: You are watching all bug changes.

[kdevelop] [Bug 330317] JJ: Open/Import Project... in Projects context menu should remember last used directory
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=330317 --- Comment #3 from Gregor Mi --- When I use kdesrc-build, a directory structure (starting at ~/kde) with certain level of nesting is created. In this structure the individual KDE projects are distributed. Within this structure it would be helpful not to have to navigate from the configured projects directory (which is not necessarily the kdesrc-build base folder). When I have one KDE project open and need another one it is likely that it can be found near the original one. On the left side of the Open dialog, there is the places panel where a fixed directory could be added for users who have all projects in one folder. The use case I described is not easily done with the current state of things. Furthermore, adding a 'remember last location' feature would be consistent with the behavior of the Open File dialog in KDevelop and other applications. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are watching all bug changes.

[dolphin] [Bug 360952] Trash view: Add "Time of deletion" column
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=360952 --- Comment #2 from Gregor Mi --- Hello Josef, thanks for confirming that there is one more user (you) who is interested in this issue. > Did you receive any reaction? No. And I don't expect any reaction soon because this bug is classified as "wishlist". So it is considered as lowest priority. > What is the problem with? As always, it is a shortage of man power and other ressources. I assume that you are not a programmer. Therefore, you could strengthen your current effort to promote free software in your personal milieu. Or by starting (or continuing) to teach young people the usage and nature of free software. In the long run this is one of the most efficient ways to get this issue fixed. With what kind of further engagement would you feel most comfortable? -- You are receiving this mail because: You are watching all bug changes.
[kdesrc-build] [Bug 394195] New: Warn if current environment variables do not match with the build of other modules

It would be helpful if kdesrc-build had an option like "--printenv" which prints all needed environment variables needed to run a manual build. E.g.: CMAKE_PREFIX_PATH=... ...=... This would be helpful to understand what kdesrc-build does under the hood and it could be used in a sourced bash script to setup those variables consistently. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are watching all bug changes.
