The problem is the wipe-effect on V4 which is set to V3. I think the

Or you change Wipe to “Slide” with Start in the center and zero

Today is my first use of kdenlive after the Linux upgrade, which I see

the newest version, 20.12.3-1. However, the kdenlive website lists
later versions, up to 23.04.0 (2023-04-20)... dunno why my system says
I have the newest. I tried to re-install but it refused saying I have
the newest.

In any event, I recorded a video today with a camera file (MTS) that
has a low quality audio track. On a separate audio device, I recorded
an audio file (WAV) from a good lapel microphone. Both files play
normally with VLC.

When I bring these files into kdenlive, and drag them into track(s)
and then play, the video displays properly in the monitor. However,
the audio is BARELY AUDIBLE in both files, even when I maximize my OS
volume. If I go to Settings/Configure-Kdenlive/Playback and set the
Preview volume to its max (200%), I can hear a little better and
without distortion. (If I display the Audio Mixer, and maximize the
channel and master, it distorts horribly, so I'm not doing that.)

When I render a little zone and play it (forgetting to turn down my OS
volume), it blares loudly and without distortion. So, the rendered
result is okay.

It appears that something is severely attenuating the preview/monitor
volume. Please advise. Thank you.

Hi Ben, hi all,

Hi Julius,

I did a little research about this recently and unfortunately
it seems to me as if there is not really a solution on the
Sphinx side. One need to have separate build dirs for every
language and it copies all static files (css, js, images,..)
to every build dir. That's just how it works :-/ (Correct me
in case anyone knows I am wrong).
However we can of course try to solve this on our and and make
our deploy tools smart in a way that they keep only one
version of each image file and replace the others with symlinks.
It should be more or less easy to detect images that are
translated since they follow the pattern |filename.de.png
where "de" is the language code, so this image would be
special for German, while for all other languages filename.png
is used.|

I had a very strong feeling that would be the case (very much
seems that Sphinx actually doesn't have proper i18n/l10n support
and it's been hacked in / bolted on later).

My initial thinking on a quick and (somewhat) dirty solution to
this had been to merge all of the image files into a single folder
at top level and then symlink that from each language.
Knowing that translated images actually have a separate filename
convention indicates that this might just be crazy enough to work.

Thoughts?

I hope that helps so far. I might be able to look into this,
but probably not very soon so if anybody else can work on this
I am more than happy.

Cheers,
Julius

Ben

Hi all,

For some time now it has been known to me that the system

data - particularly images.

That leads to the following outcome, where aside from
sites that we expect to be quite large (like www.kde.org
 and api.kde.org
) all of the application
documentation sites are quite big as well:

root@nicoda /srv/www # du -h --max-depth=1 ./generated/ |

1.4G    ./generated/www.kde.org
7.9G    ./generated/docs.kdenlive.org

29G     ./generated/

This stands in comparison to the Docbook documentation
site for all other KDE applications:

root@nicoda /srv/www # du -h --max-depth=1 . | grep G
29G     ./generated
16G     ./api.kde.org-legacy
6.0G    ./docs.kde.org
51G     .

It would be nice if we could please look into some fixes
for this, as it looks like Sphinx is duplicating the
images - once for every language - when that isn't necessary.
I could understand if the screenshots were updated as part
of the translation, but it looks like they're not in the
majority of cases - below being just a sample:

On Windows, craft build Kdenlive with .debug files. So when I reproduce
the crash with gdb I get a backlog file. But the .debug files are huge.
Download the debug symbols dynamically would be a good idea.

Better logging of rendering crashes in the way you mentioned doesn't
seem that hard to implement, but very effective and useful. We have
many reports about rendering crashes without useful info to fix or
debug the cause.

Hello,

I agree with what stated before :

3) for tests : we should write more (including some UI but not with
virtual display), but not investing years focusing on coverage, just
adding little by little

2) for project test suite, but can run only before release by beta
testers

1) for crash backtrace, trying to figure out how to dynamically
download debug symbols (can we have something generic like abrt on
fedora, whoopsie on ubuntu ?)
also note that KCrash(DrKonqi) / DrMingw can currently be loaded only
for kdenlive but not melt => for rendering crash info we must plug it
into melt!

Thanks for your involvement, good luck :-)

Hi all,
I continue to believe that the general quality of Kdenlive releases is
one of the most important areas for improvement. I have some ideas
that I think could help, but only limited time to implement them. I'd
like to hear from you all what would be most valuable and should be
done first.

* UI Automation Testing - We can create some UI tests (click menu
item, click button, etc.) for some common tasks.

Pros: Can run tests without source code, so we can test packaged
releases and check for packaging issues like missing dependencies.
Possible to run tests across platforms. Can test UI that the current
unit tests cannot cover.
Cons: UI tests tend to be flakey, slow, and/or hard to write. No code
coverage data.

* Project test suite - We can create a suite of Kdenlive projects and
test that they render pixel-for-pixel in each Kdenlive version.

Pros: Catches when we accidentally break/remove effects. Catches
regressions when we change timeline behavior and clips are shifted.
Helps ensure that old projects will continue to work in future
versions of Kdenlive. Could catch some rendering crashes (e.g. GPU
accel).
Cons: Slow to run. Requires a lot of sample projects + audio/video
files as test cases. Might require some code changes to be able to
script properly.

* Better crash logging - Many of the bug reports do not have a
backtrace, and it's not currently possible to get backtraces for some
release types (AppImage?).

Krita provides a UI dialog to view its log, which also includes
backtraces. The krita log file is also easy to get on Windows.
https://docs.krita.org/en/reference_manual/sharing_krita_logs.html#getting-backtrace

Other areas for improvement include logging what frame a render job
crashes at along with what effects are used during that time. I'd also
like to know how other KDE projects improve the bug reporting flow.

Pros: backtraces make it easier to fix bugs.
Cons: Users need to be educated on how to find and upload logs. May be
difficult to get backtraces in AppImage, Flatpak, Snap, or for the
renderer. Doesn't help catch bugs before they're released.

I think all are feasible to implement, although all would require some
additional ongoing work to be useful. Any suggestions or comments? Any
other ideas that I should look into?

Thanks,
Eric

Also, I wanted to extract the timecode at which melt crashes, to give
this feedback to the user, and maybe offer the users to scroll the
timeline to that position so that they can check if there are weird

I like this idea as I see many rendering issues coming from FFMPEG
incompatible clips or the user enables "Parallel Processing" in the
render settings for which some effects are not capable.

Hello Eric,

First, many thanks for your involvement and efforts to make Kdenlive
always more robust!

Regarding render crash, I had ideas for a long time that I never put
in place...

We are supposed to hold the log from melt process and show it up upon
any problem,
but I'm not sure it is true all the time, and I wanted to better
advise bug reporters to share this log.
I also thinked of increasing melt verbosity level to get more
information from this log.

Also, I wanted to extract the timecode at which melt crashes, to give
this feedback to the user,
and maybe offer the users to scroll the timeline to that position so
that they can check
if there are weird clip/effect/transition to tweak here.

Moreover, we can get crash stacktrace on Linux for kdenlive thanks to
KCrash/DrKonqi,
on Windows we had DrMingw that we had to disable for years
(Craft was held on buggy mingw-gcc-9, now gcc is upgraded we can
enable it back).
But melt doesn't have any crash handler linked,
we could submit a PR to MLT to add an option to link to KCrash/DrMingw,
or any better options (embed a simple signal handler dumping
stacktrace?).

But most users don't run programs with debug symbols,
so we must understand how to make the trace informative later on ?
I have seen fedora's ABRT system automatically getting debug symbols
to generate bug report,
I don't know if this can be generalized through KCrash or any other,
or if it's a task not too difficult on the developers side?

I'm sorry I never found time to learn how to do this and apply these
ideas,
maybe you are ready to dig into this direction?

That's all for now, hope this helps!

For rendering crashes, bug #456689 is the latest and was reported on
22.04.2.[0] There are other bugs with a similar symptom, and seems to
be mainly a Windows problem.[1]

More generally, this feels like part of a bigger category of issues
where we have buggy dependencies without end-to-end testing to catch
them (e.g. otio, KF5 Purposes, ffmpeg). Ideally users should feel
confident in upgrading to a new Kdenlive version.

For timeline corruption, the most recent report I found was on Reddit,
regarding 22.04.3.[2] I personally am still using 21.12.3, but don't
remember if I experienced corruption with 21.12.x or 21.08.x. It may
only happen to a small % of saves, but it's a very destructive bug.

Personally, I think Kdenlive has a good set of features already, but
there are opportunities to greatly increase its stability. Open to
ideas and opinions!

Re: Article on Kdenlive and Shotcut in a Swiss magazine

2022-06-27 Thread Eugen Mohr

Hi Christoph

I'm Eugen Mohr from the Kdenlive core team. Thank you for the link and
the nice article. Yes Kdenlive get more and more stable and we think we
implement features to help the user making great videos. I ask the team
about your 5 "wishes" and here are the answers:

1) and 5) There is already an alpha implementation of openfx and gmic.
https://discuss.pixls.us/t/gmic-for-openfx-and-adobe-plugins/452/114?u=frd.
This depends on the MLT integration as well.

2) OpenEXR: write support recently landed in FFmpeg, so this might be
something possible.
The problem with openEXR files is that they are HUGE so if there is no
way to offload playback to GPU the experience is not very nice. Also
usually they have more than 8bit color depth...

3) Bins: We have a task for that. Please make some details on what is
missing so I can add it to the task.

4) Organizing and commenting features: Please explain more in details
what is missing.

6) Color corrections. Primary and secondary color correction is possible
already. We know it's not the best implementation so far. Let's see if
we can improve it.

Best regards

Since I didn't want to subscribe to yet another ML, I hope this message gets
through, and I also hope you like the article.

If I had a few wishes fulfilled by your amazing programme, these would be:

1) Support for OpenFX plug-ins

2) Support for OpenEXR

3) Bins like in Avid (Kdenlive is already close)

4) More organising and commenting features like those available in Avid.

5) Since I'm coming from image editing and love to use the G'MIC plug-in, which
can also be applied to video, enabling G'MIC for Kdenlive would be a major feat.

6) A more unified and intuitive way to do colour corrections, like in DaVinci.

These are not demands but rather friendly suggestions.

Kind regards and thanks for your amazing work,

to a crash when starting 21.04.0.

Yes this download banner is a "global" page that's the reason why it's

on the Download page, for some reason it broke The Windows
Setup/Standalone version's download buttons (again!). I did open the
modules look for the new text's location, but I'm pretty sure I
clicked the "Disregard All Changes" button before doing anything else.

I was able to fix the the buttons by using HTML code from a unaffected

as well. Still, I think the height of all Download buttons look a bit
off now. I can't remember whether they started like this or not before
I touching the page. I was in a panic.

What I've learned this time: 1) Wordpress's Revision system did not
work for Divi Builder for some reason. 2) For the Download Section
specifically, things can't be translated inside of it and all
languages share the same stuff. 3) I must switch to Code mode first,
then refresh the page, and only then will Divi display the correct
HTML code. Otherwise it will display some interpreted codes that
produces the exact result like when I broke it today. I wonder if they
are connected.

Please have a look at the situation and make additional fixes if
necessary.

My deepest apology again for the inconvenience!

To my surprise, although I have only changed the button texts on

Not only that, I now can't edit anything in Divi Editor by clicking

Hi there, development team of Kdenlive

It's been a while since I was involved with Kdenlive. Back then, it
was only a hobby, but recently I have started making videos commercially.
I still maintain the Arch Linux kdenlive-git and kdenlive-release-git
packages, of course. It's pretty low effort involved to maintain a
package.

Firstly, Kdenlive is pretty solid, and suits my needs perfectly. There
was some chatter about moving to a different channel for bug reports.
As I am using Kdenlive much more now, I am running into minor
annoyances, and would like to feed that back to the group.

Minor stuff like:
1. The cursor being invisible when adding or modifying text in a title
clip.

2. .mlt clips' sound manipulation being missing. When changing the
speed of a clip, the resultant .mlt file does not have a "sound"
attached to it when dragged onto the timeline. It makes it hard to
mute, unmute or change the volume of a clip.
I have taken to making my own transcode profile, and transcoding the
clips to get at their sound again... but this seems against the whole
non-destructive editing that was a large focus of Kdenlive when I
started using it.

Where would you guys like to have these gripes recorded?

Also, sound seems to have a bit of room for improvement. There is no
equalizer or hiss removal or FFT filter. Currently I am using Kdenlive
to split out the audio stream, then editing with Audacity, then using
ffmpeg to re-mux the sound back into the video clip. Why am I doing it
that way around?

Well, it's not always clear which clips you are going to use in the
edit. Once the clip is all cut up, it's a pain to extract each little
piece and do en-masse sound filtering on it. So, I edit the master
clip's sound, and re-mux it with FFmpeg, and when I re-use the
original filename, Kdenlive does not know the difference, and I have
nice clean sound in every little piece of the clip that is used.

It would be nice if I was just able to export the sound, edit it, then
"merge" it back into the clip, overwriting the original sound.

Re: Pitch compensation on speed effect doesn't seem to work

2020-02-15 Thread Eugen Mohr

Hello

The rubberband lib integration into MLT is not proper done so far. You
have to manually do the following:

lib/pkgconfig/fftw.pc rename to fftw3.pc

compile rubberband

compile vamp-plugin-sdk

compile ladspa-sdk

On the end compile and merge MLT again. This should enable rubberband in
MLT which will handle the pitch compensation.

Or you wait until the rubberband integration is done correctly.

My videos depend on having pitch compensated audio for time

exporting the audio, and modifying the tempo in Audacity. I'm really
thankful this has been added, but I don't seem to be able to get it to

I've rebuilt mlt from git master, verifying
that bmatherly/pitch_compensate is included.
I've rebuilt kdenlive from git master, completely from a clean tree.

What could I be missing, and what more information is needed to work

Hallo Candide

The downloaded title clips are stored here:
AppData\Local\kdenlive\titles (Windows+r -> type “APPDATA” -> then
follow the path above). Yes you are right; as long as the title
templates are not moved into the title folder they are not visible. I’ll

open a task to solve that.

it's installed).

I've searched through the Kdenlive program files to see where the
installed titles could be saved, but couldn't find them. I noticed
that the pre-installed title templates were saved in the folder
"Kdenlive-18.08.2\data\titles", and it seems like the user-submitted
title templates that can be installed are hosted here:
https://store.kde.org/browse/cat/335/.

I've realized that if I downloaded the titles directly from the KDE
Store, unzipped the folder, and copied the .kdentitle files into the
"Kdenlive-18.08.2\data\titles" folder, the templates appeared in the
software.

For future releases, would it be possible for the Templates displayed
in the "Settings > Download New Title Templates" window to be directly
saved in that folder, as opposed to having to KDE store (as well as
for the wipes, keyboard configurations, and render profiles).

I would love to create some new title templates to share, and it would
be a lot easier for people to use them if they be downloaded inside
the program.

Candide

Am 01.12.2018 um 18:44 schrieb Harald Albrecht:

Hi,

while throwing some of my existing Kdenlive projects at 19.04 beta 6 I
noticed these things:

  * missing effect: frei0r.scale0tilt -- no, this ain't edge crop,
which does not allow repositioning the cropped part. scale0tilt is
one of my essential effects which I need in many of my daytime
projects, for instance, when cropping and placing screen
recordings from mobile devices, PC screens, et cetera over other
illustrations.
  * timeline playback has less performance compared to classic and
stutters much more often. preview rendering simply fails without
any usable information as to why. preview profile is DNxHD 1080p
25fps for FullHD 1080p 25fps project.
o switching to MPEG preview rendering profile kills kdenlive:
first segment goes yellow -> green, second segment goes
yellow, then kdenlive crashes. terminal output is useless with
only 10982 memory access violation
  * project with only two audio tracks gets a third new audio track A3
named "extra audio": it contains mp4 video clips from video track
V1. Might that be because the source video has a (silent) audio
tracks?
o By the way: where's the classic disable audio on video clip gone?
  * the audio of timeline playback doesn't work correctly, audio is
"wav" PCM 32bit 48kHz:
o some audio clips are silent, albeit they contain a clearly
visible audio waveform.
o some audio clips don't show an audio waveform, but they should
as the clip region in question has non-silent audio.
o in general, audio waveform is out of sync with the clips in
the timelime and playback: when audio playback is correct, the
waveform isn't, clearly visible that silent parts of the audio
waveform don't match the correct playback.
  * Transitions are almost invisible in the timeline and make them
very hard to spot. Please add an option to bring back the much
more visible classic design: as I work a lot with transitions in
order to compose multiple video tracks, the new layout is a pita
to me.
  * Transition keyframes sometimes end up being shown in the
transition properties with the correct frame positions, but wrong
keyframe "bar" in the properties; that is, while two keyframes at
0f and 12f get imported correctly, the keyframe "bar" shows the
keyframe at 12f sitting somewhere near the middle, but without any
following keyframe. The bar thus extends beyond the length of the
transition.
  * In console I see lots of "couldn't create image from "...png" or
"jpg", however, these image file are fine and correctly shown in
all other tools; does the AppImage contain borked import
filters??? I've seen this problem before with an AppImage, I think
it was 18.04 which was totally unusable due to this issue. For
reference, 18.08 works fine!

Hi!

I've tried using rendering scripts in Kdenlive 18.04.1 AppImage. When
I run them I get this:

|$ ./Edit_001.sh /tmp/.mount_b9pvvV/usr/bin/kdenlive_render:
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libQt5Core.so.5: version `Qt_5.9' not found
(required by /tmp/.mount_b9pvvV/usr/bin/kdenlive_render) |

I've created a tool called *kdenlive-multirender* for rendering a
video project in multiple parts in parallel. As it's based on these
render scripts, it also doesn't work - which means a 15-minute video
renders for 3 hours on a Ryzen 7 1700 CPU, as it's being rendered in a
single thread.
With kdenlive-multirender I was able to cut these time down
significantly in the past.

I'd like to make my script work with the AppImage releases, as that's
why I am using right now (because the automatic crash recovery is a
life-saver).

Is the rendering scripts functionality currently broken, or is there
something I can do to make it work?

If anyone would want to use that script or help me fix the issue,
here's a link to Github:

https://github.com/unfa/kdenlive-multirender/issues/11

PS: I'm using Kdenlive to make videos about electronic music
production with FLOSS and Linux. Here's the latest one:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B66VtJBN2N0

PPS: I first wanted to post this on KDE forums, but because of the
forums user name policy I can never remember my user name or recover
it, so I can't use the KDE forums.

_INVALID_PROCESS_ATTACH_ATTEMPT
<https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/drivers/debugger/bug-check-0x5--invalid-process-attach-attempt>_

Hint according Microsoft:

This bug check can occur if the driver calls the *KeAttachProcess*
function and the thread is already attached to another process. It is
better to use the *KeStackAttachProcess* function. If the current thread
was already attached to another process, the *KeStackAttachProcess*
function saves the current APC state before it attaches the current
thread to the new process.

0x0094

_KERNEL_STACK_LOCKED_AT_EXIT

Could be a follow up crash of 0x0005

The Kdenlive EXE file has no version number. So I put Kdenlive always
into a folder which has the version name.

Hi John

If you say “programmed”. What is coming to my mind is hardware. Do you
have a sound card or video card involved which helps rendering? I don’t
know if there are some temp files in Kdenlive who stores some
intermediate steps?

MLT, QT, FFMPEG? I don’t know the software routing from pressing play
until something happens.

Hey Eugen,

yeah I am already trying to combat the pops by adding fade ins and
fade outs at the end of every clip, which helps sometimes.

But whenever there is a Slide transition, I can't here a pop during
playback, but the timeline indicator will halt/stop for a millisecond
during that transition period in the timeline, and that is exactly
where the pop occurs in the rendered output.

And it seems that nothing I do, in terms of switching different audio
codecs, containers, even moving the clips or the transition where the
pop occurs, solves the problem. Once the pop is there, it will
continue to come up as if it was programmed at that specific spot.

The only thing that seems to help is lowering the framerate by
changing to a different project profile, but that completely messes
the audio up, putting it out of synch etc.

I will try going back to Ubuntu 16.04, maybe it's something about
Alsa/Pulseaudio on 18.04. Really at the end with my math here.

Thank you for your patience, I really appreciate it

The only way I can get rid of all pops is if I render with a 25FPS

It comes 2 things to my mind:
-    Do you cut the audio at the zero point? In Audition (for example)
is a function that you can cut only at that point (when the wave goes
through zero) to avoid clicks.
-    When audio frequency (i.e. 44.1kHz) and video frequency (i.e.
60fps) interfere each other after a time and from there you get clicks.
Video rendering is always video frequency driven. This would be a FFMPEG
problem.

Hey Jean, thank you for that valuable info.

I have tested the 18.08 version that you linked and unfortunately the
pops at the beginning of audio clips still occur, but I have made an
interesting discovery.
When I render the entire project, there are three pops at the
beginning of 3 clips, let's say at 01:23, 02:02 and 03:15 in the time
line.

These audio pops only come up in the rendered output, not during playback.
When I only render a small selected zone surrounding the area where I
know the pop will be, it does not occur.

Only when I render the full project, they appear.
I have tried this with all three known audio pops that I have spotted
in the fully rendered project, and each time they disappear when I
only render a selected area around them.

The next thing I have noticed is that switching the playback settings
betwen SDL and RTAudio  can affect this issue as well.

As you know me now, I will now enter full testing mode and report back
to you with a more detailed analysis.
I will compile the latest melt, ffmpeg and co in order to provide a
full report, but I will use the AppImage versio 18.8.0 which you have
suggested.

Anything else I should consider?

Best regards,

John

Hello Johnar!

I have uncovered a new problem with the latest stable AppImage
18.04.1 release of kdenlive which is very troublesome.

Randomly, kdenlive will cause a "click" or "pop" sound at the
beginning of an audio track. I have observed that this happens the
most when two audio tracks are overlapping or a cut has been made at
the beginning of the a clip.

I have also found that audio pops disappear in the same footage
disappear when switching from SDL to RTAudio in the settings.

I am using a fresh install of Kubuntu 18.04 with updates and
Mlt and ffmpeg versions all from the Appimage, so this has to be a
thing in kdenlive or maybe the latest Alsa / Pulseaudio package?

I have tried some stuff suggested in forums such as exporting only
the audio in wav, but without luck.

I have just uploaded the 18.08.0 AppImage containing the latest MLT.
Could you check if the problem still happens ?

It is available here:

https://files.kde.org/kdenlive/release/kdenlive-18.08.0-x86_64.AppImage.mirrorlist

Thanks for your feedback.

Jean-Baptiste

Any ideas?

I have mostly been a web developer so far, so I do not have much

done any Qt development.

I viewed the "Junior Jobs" section in Kdenlive Development

Currently I'm having some trouble with the automated tests. Should
they succeed in their current state or are there some known

It would be helpful if someone would suggest some other tasks

Re: Incredible Render Performance In Kdenlive With NVENC - But 1 Big Problem

2018-07-23 Thread Eugen Mohr

Am 23.07.2018 um 19:35 schrieb johnar1:
Thanks again, for your efforts! (Ich vermute, dass du ebenfalls
Deutscher bist, also nochmal danke haha.)
*I have 100% and with absolute certainty figured out what the actual
problem is.*

I have compiled melt from the latest git available here:
https://github.com/mltframework/mlt/releases/tag/v6.10.0

I just ./configure and make && make install
I then use this melt executable by selecting it in the kdenlive
environment tab.

Here is the kicker:

When I use ./configure --enable-gpl --enable-gpl3  to compile melt--->
NVENC does not --->CPU utilization 100% on 1 core, 20% - 30% on the
rest, GPU utilization= 4%

When  I use ./configure without these two flags ---> NVENC works -->
CPU utilization = 100% on all cores /GPU utilization = 90%

Here is kicker number 2:

I originally thought this was a problem with NVENC, but that is not true.

When compiling with --enable-gpl and --enable-gpl3, Kdenlive
subsequently only uses 1 single CPU core for rendering. (Despite
having 4 threads selected in the render dialog, kdenlive environment
and even in the generated render script)

*That *is why NVENC *appears* to not work, because the CPU is not
being used properly, hence it cannot feed the GPU enough frames. There
is some GPU utilization

Now I have read that enabling the license also enables a bunch of qt
modules, and qt obviously heavily pertains to concurrent CPU scheduling.

You'd think that the problem could be solved by simply not using
--enable-gpl and --enable-gpl3, but unfortunately that excludes the
libmltqt.so module, which I need for title clips in kdenlive.

So basically, without gpl I get crazy render speeds and almost 100%
GPU/CPU utilization, but not title clips.
And with gpl only 1 single CPU core is being used for rendering, no
matter how many times I specify 4 threads, but title clips work.
