Under the display options check the box which says "Show note in taskbar" hit OK. This has been fixed in the codebase for long. Most problems with sending email now will be much more specific. I try to adapt the title better so that this report is not found as often. For you I recommend to first report the issue to your GNU distribution and packagers to exclude problems there. Once packaging and setup issues are rules out, a report here in a new issue is really appreciated!
