[Bug 158365] Autocomplete fileds should match vocals with/without accents (áéíóú)

2011-02-02 Thread Dotan Cohen
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=158365

--- Comment #4 from Dotan Cohen kde-51 dotancohen com 2011-02-02 21:19:23 ---
As modern Hebrew does not have the J sound, when transliterating non-Hebrew
names we sometimes use the G (ג) letter with an apostrophe. For instance, the
name Jarred could be written as either ג'רד or גרד. Therefore, as either
way could be written (even inconsistently by the same person), Korganizer
should ignore the apostrophe in searches. A search on ג'רד should match both
ג'רד and גרד, and a search on גרד should also match both ג'רד and
גרד.

Note that some other characters should be ignored in searches as well, such as
the Hebrew vowel points. When a contact is named דוֹתָן then a search for
דותן should turn him up as well.

Thanks.

In English an example of such a character would be the hyphen. The name
Ben-Solman could be typed Ben Solman for instance. In Hebrew the letter Yod
and the character Geresh (apostrophe) are often eliminated in names, and just
as often included. This is very problematic and even strict adherence to either
an include all or eleminate all policy from the user's perspective is not
enough to eliminate the problem.

I can confirm on KDE 4.4.3 that Ctrl-rigthShift will switch the directionality
of the text field in Krunner, but not the alignment. So Hebrew text does appear
RTL (periods after sentences correctly on the left) but it is erroneously
left-aligned.

This bug only has 140 votes. The top 5 most hated bugs
all have more than a thousand.

If you want this bug to get some love, voting for it might help.

Actually, the head Plasma dev already said that he does not take the amount of
votes into consideration when deciding what to fix.

Furthermore, looking at the 5 most hated bugs, they pretty much get as ignored
as every other bug. This is when they were filed:
2002-04-23
2008-01-14
2004-03-17
2003-12-10
2007-05-07

That's an average age of over five years!

[Bug 233078] KAddressbook in KDE 4.4 is not feature-complete

i think this is up to distributions to pick up trunk
commits when needed and have feedbacks.

You suggest that feature-incomplete software replace their feature-complete
counterparts and be pushed to end users to get feedback? What feedback do you
want? I personally compared Kaddressbook 4.3 to 4.4 and filed bugs that listed
all feature regression, some of which were major. Want other feedback do you
need from _end_users_ at that point?

This is harmfull to commit those important commits in branches

Are you suggesting that pushing feature-incomplete experimental versions of
otherwise stable software to end users is not harmful? Please tell me, what is
the purpose of KDE SC, if not to provide usable software for the end user? From
the kde.org homepage:
...dedicated to creating a free and user-friendly computing experience...
Shipping feature-incomplete software as a replacement for working software is
user-friendly?

From the What is KDE page:
Our community has developed a wide variety of applications for communication,
work, education and entertainment.
How do you expect people to use the software for communication, work, education
and entertainment when experimental feature-incomplete versions replace stable
versions of software?

From the What is KDE page:
Our products are used by millions of home and office workers, and are being
deployed in schools around the world
Do you not think that you have some responsibility to the very home and office
workers and schools that your flaunt as your users?

From the What is KDE page:
KDE produces a number of key applications such as ... Kontact, the
comprehensive personal information management suite.
Kontact is billed as a key KDE application. Thus key functionality is removed
from KDE when shipping experimental versions of software to end users.

From the What is KDE page:
It is our hope and continued ambition that the KDE team will bring open,
reliable, stable and monopoly-free computing to the everyday user.
Reliable? Stable? Shipping this Kaddresbook version was the exact opposite of
reliable or stable.

--- Comment #3 from Dotan Cohen kde-51 dotancohen com 2010-03-16 13:56:48 ---
You can use a custom field for that as soon as
they are back in 4.5 or later

Custom fields are not flexible enough to let one query for information such as:
1) See which pizza restaurant is open on Friday at 02:30 in the morning.
2) See which museums will be open when your old friend comes to visit.
3) Which pharmacy is open on Saturday when your child is sick.

If you are concerned about vCard compatibility, then the information could be
stored in custom vCard fields. Or the information could be stored in a
human-readable format as an amendment to the Notes field, that won't show in
Kaddressbook but will show in other apps. Shall I suggest just such a format?

but how this will be represented in the UI is a
 completely open question.

Would you like me to write up a mockup?

That is a distro issue, you should either file a new bug with Kubuntu or

Please add a feature to link people in Kaddressbook by relation. For instance,
if I have a contact Ety Cohen who is married to Dotan Cohen, then I'd like a
way to associate the two. Then, by opening the contact Ety Cohen I would have
a link to Dotan Cohen.

Please add an option to let the user define a field's value in terms of a soft
link to the value of the same field of a different contact. Often two contacts
have the same personal information. For instance, a married couple would have
the same anniversary date, and likely the same home phone number and home
address as well. When this is the case (when there is a soft link between
contacts' fields), updating one contact's info should update the other's.

This bug proposes that Kmail add an option for showing the user's own replies
in threads in a single view window. The Gmail web-based email client does this,
and it is very convenient for conversing with someone who does not know how to
properly quote. For a detailed description of Gmail's threading with user's
replies, see the heading Viewing a conversation thread on this page:

[Bug 222678] New: Missing fields in new Kaddressbook for KDE SC 4.4

OS/Version: unspecified
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: general
AssignedTo: kdepim-bugs@kde.org
ReportedBy: kde...@dotancohen.com
CC: to...@kde.org

Version:(using KDE 4.3.4)
Installed from:Unspecified Linux

The following fields are missing from the new Kaddressbook in KDE SC 4.4:
1) Multiple IM addresses
2) Categories
3) Edit different parts of the name (for some of my contacts I only know the
given name, for others only the family name)
4) Custom Fields.

I am marking as a bug, not a wishlist, as this seems to be a dataloss issue.
Even if the data is safely stored somewhere (I do not know if it is or if it is
not, could a dev please make this clear) the user has no way to access it, so
it is for him lost.

Now that Kaddressbook is Akonadi based and not Vcard dependant, it would be
great if a new field type for working hours could be added. Right now I am
using the Notes field for this, but having a separate field would let one query
for this information, and find it quickly. This field is relevant for over half
of my 400+ contacts, so it is not some corner case.

Thanks!

This issue is _not_ addressed with the new KDE 4.2 UI.

I think that the OP was not clear in explaining the Gmail experience for those
not familiar with it. In Gmail, one sees a flat list of all messages, both
received and sent. This is not a flat list in the list pane, rather in the
message pane.

--- Comment #3 from Dotan Cohen kde-51 dotancohen com 2009-10-16 18:00:03 ---
Thanks. Kmail is using CSS as opposed to nonsemantic HTML. This is the method
recommended by W3C. While I agree that it bloats the code, it has many semantic
and other benefits and allows for easier maintenance. I am of the opinion that
this is the correct behaviour, even if it does make the emails larger.

[Bug 206189] New: Show replies in threads

2009-09-03 Thread Dotan Cohen
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=206189

   Summary: Show replies in threads
   Product: kmail
   Version: unspecified
  Platform: Ubuntu Packages
OS/Version: unspecified
Status: NEW
  Severity: wishlist
  Priority: NOR
 Component: general
AssignedTo: kdepim-bugs@kde.org
ReportedBy: kde...@dotancohen.com

Version:(using KDE 4.3.0)
Installed from:Ubuntu Packages

I propose that Kmail add an option for showing the user's own replies in
threads in a single view window. The Gmail web-based email client does this,
and it is very convenient for conversing with someone who does not know how to
properly quote. For a detailed description of Gmail's threading with user's
replies, see the heading Viewing a conversation thread on this page:
http://xkahn.zoned.net/software/evolution/threads/

Thanks.

[Bug 205988] New: Kmail folder tree inconsistent with rest of KDE

In KDE applications such as Dolphin and System Settings, the arrow keys are
used to navigate the folder tree in the following manner:
Up: Change selected folder to the folder shown above active selected folder
Down: Change selected folder to the folder shown below active selected folder
Left: Expand collapsed folder
Right: Collapse expanded folder

In kmail, the Up and Down arrow keys have no effect on the folder tree.
Instead, one must use Alt-UpArrow and Alt-DownArrow. LeftArrow and RightArrow
do not need the Alt key to be pressed.

The up and down keys are used to scroll the message
 in the preview pane.

I am aware of this, however, my bug is for the situation in which the Folder
Tree is focused, not the main window. I agree that it is nice to change folders
without having to worry about refocusing (and that feature should be retained)
however when the Folder Tree has focus it should be consistent with the rest of
KDE.

I am reopening as I have clarified the point. Thanks, Torgny.

--- Comment #1 from Dotan Cohen kde-51 dotancohen com 2009-07-25 10:08:52 ---
I think that this is a good case for a generic change to the open/save dialogs
used in Kmail Konqueror and other places. Particularly, the open dialog
should have a default as is currently the case, plus the ability to open other
applications as well (similar to the Open With dialogue in Dolphin).

Note that Mozilla applications work this way: the user is presented with three
choices:
1) Open with Default
2) Open with... browse installed applications
3) Save

David, would you agree with making the bug more generic?

Specifically, Korganizer and Kaddressbook do not. I moved the Product to
Kontact so that Korganizer and Kaddressbook would be included. I have not yet
filed on other apps, I want to test the other apps carefully and report very
specifically which elements should be highlighted on mouseover.

Thanks.

Hi Dotan! Congratulations, you've filled the bug number #20 !

That's what happens when one goes on a 20 bug streak! I picked a good time!

I am reassigning this to KMail, I would suggest to file individual
bug reports for each other application that still uses the old classes.

Will do, but could you please explain exactly what I need to request from a
technical standpoint? I did not realize that this was something that KDE
currently supports (that each app would need to add) because no apps currently
do this.

Thanks.

[Bug 199907] Clicking on resources available crashes Kontact

2009-07-13 Thread Dotan Cohen
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=199907

--- Comment #2 from Dotan Cohen kde-51 dotancohen com 2009-07-13 21:07:27 ---
Does this also happen in a standalone KOrganizer session?

I will try to crash it. Please also check Bug #200080 which may or may not be a
dupe of this bug. Bug #200080 occured while trying to reproduce this issue
inside Kontact.

I file my mail at the end of every month. Of the hundreds of folders I have, I
usually only file into four or five different folders. An option to highlight
the last N (N configurable by the user) folders that messages have been moved
into would help.

Thanks.

Could you please be more descriptive? What is ugly? Can you give an example of
the Mozilla behaviour and explain why it is preferable?

Thanks.

It sounds like you should be editing with an HTML editor. If the text is
converted to plain text, then that is how it will be replied. There has been a
strong backlash against Kmail in the past for replying to HTML mail in plain
text.

It appears that the applications are already running in separate threads, so
this request makes sense. In a perfect world this request would not be
necessary, however, Kontact has been very crash-prone in KDE 3 and KDE 4, so a
feature like this would be great.

By far the best personal wiki available is Zim:
http://zim-wiki.org/

That application is now getting ported to Python but it remains a GTK
application. If KDE devs want to create a wiki, then Zim would be the best
application to copy.

I suppose that the best way to handle this would be to show all birthdays by
default, then give the option of eliminating them on an individual basis. Note
that this would be valid for both the summary view and for the Korganizer
integration.

A workaround would be to store those birthdays that you do not want to show in
Summary in a custom field, or in the Notes field.

In the absence of a wiki application in Kontact (Bug 164091) it would be great

need a wiki, for everyone there is the killer app that they would like to

Sometimes users with set the size of a pane to 0, then disable the pane. Other
times, it seems that the default size of a pane is 0, even if it is hidden by
default. Then, when the user enables the pane, nothing appears on his screen.
Therefore, whenever enabling a pane, it's size should be set to some positive
value other than 0.
