[Akonadi] [Bug 289097] error Unable to fetch item from backend when entering IMAP folder

Out of statistics, is anybody encountering this with 4.11 or later?

Since this bug exists for over 2 years now, and apperantly no one dig into the
code or the related processes to solve this issue. At least it's not documented
here.

I'm pretty sure it won't vanish by itself :-)

I think this has to do with CALDAV

No, it hasn't. It appears in non-CALDAV environments as well.

[Bug 293893] New: Useless error messages

2012-02-12 Thread Michael Holtermann
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=293893

   Summary: Useless error messages
   Product: Akonadi
   Version: 4.7
  Platform: Ubuntu Packages
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
  Severity: crash
  Priority: NOR
 Component: IMAP resource

Log from akonadi_imap_resource, remote service is GoogleMail

Version: 4.7 (using KDE 4.7.4)
OS:Linux

Hi folks,

today one of my Akonadi agents stops working - the agent fetches GoogleMail via
IMAP. On every sync I'll get a notification saying Unable to list item parts.

This message (like many others, like NO unkown namespace) is pretty useless
for the unambitious, normal user. There is no guidance available in how to
solve such issues.

The Akonadi Console, a developer tool displaying frightening warnings wen
started, names the error as Unknown Error:

AgentBase(akonadi_imap_resource_9): Unbekannter Fehler. (Unable to list item
parts)

How can I solve the error of Unable to list item parts?

For details I'll attach the debug output from Akonadi Console of that resource.

I'm sorry that I have to say that, but currently I'm very dissatisfied with
Akonadi. Akonadi is a vital part of KDE. KOrganizer depends on it; if Akonadi
fails, the PIM suite fails, too. Akonadi should be much more fault tolerant if
the remote resources does not work as expected, or should guide the user to the
current settings if client's config is faulty. In my opinion, Akonadi is far
away from being rock solid.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
at least on my machine.

Actual Results:
- A useless error message without any advice about a possible fix.

- A software (Akonadi) producing new errors once a month, while user has not
changed anything in his settings.

Expected Results:
- A link to a FAQ, or at least a FAQ or answer that could by found by Google.
The first link on Google is a link to a diff where 'mwolff' inserts that
Exception into Akonadi.

- If a serious exception occurs, Akonadi should no longer try to fetch that
resource over and over again (my sync interval is 1 minute). It might lenghten
the interval, but after a few tries it should notifiy the user *once*.

I've switched to GoogleMail which does not produce that error, so I'm no longer
interested in a final solution.

But I guess other users might run into this issue, to (see #2), so at least a
hint about the cause of that error message would be nice.

Thanks in advance!

Seeing this message, too, while clicking through folders in Akonadi Console.

1. click on a folder in Browser tab
2. See the debug messages for that resource in Debugger
3. wait for a Unable to fetch item from backend message box
-- Synchronization stops, folder remains empty.

Please see https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=293893, I think Akonadi should
become much more fault tolerant to be usable by normal users.

Could this be an issue with some size limit or a cache overflow or something
like that?

Like above, I
1. selected a folder in Browser
2. waited for the error message
3. selected another folder which was fetched before (no new messages in Debug
tab)
4. re-selected the folder in question
-- Akondi proceeds with fetch.

But I cannot correlate the issue with the number of mails between error
messages nor with the size of a mail (time to need for download).

My error'd folder contains several thousand messages. How do I see which
message causes the exception?

[Bug 293895] New: Timestamp in log files

2012-02-12 Thread Michael Holtermann

   Summary: Timestamp in log files
   Product: Akonadi

  Platform: Ubuntu Packages

Status: UNCONFIRMED

  Priority: NOR
 Component: general
AssignedTo: kdepim-bugs@kde.org
ReportedBy: li...@michael-holtermann.de

Version: 4.7 (using KDE 4.7.4)
OS:Linux

Please provide timestamps in the log files (Akonadi Console Debugger, log files
in .local/share/akonadi).

This would help at debugging Akonadi.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
Timestamps are missing.

Actual Results:
Impossible to correlate messages from Akonadi Console, KDE notification, error
logs and other sources.

Expected Results:
A timestamp at each line in the logs.

This error still exists in Akonadi 1.6.2 (from Ubuntu 11.10).

Shouldn't this issue become fixed in Akonadi itself? I guess the server is
responsible for starting the synchronization processes. If so, it must check
network connectivity before starting the sync.

Some new information:

DomainFactory provides two host names for IMAP services:

- imap.mydomain.invalid (will result in a certificate error if SSL is enabled,
DomainFactory does not provide custom SSL certificates, at least not with my
service plan)

- sslmailpool.ispgateway.de

As far as I can see the first host provides both plain and encrypted services
at port 25, the second host is SSL only at 993.

Now the fact: Using the second host, I run into the Unknown namespace. The
first one works as expected.

With wireshark I see some SSL traffic on both hosts. If it could help to solve
this issue and if it is possible to decrypt the traffic easily, I'll give it a
try, but would need some advice how to do so.

Additionally, I'll open an issue at DomainFactory, but I doubt that this is a
server side issue, since it worked with KDE 4.6 (pre-Akonadi era).

Regards, Michael

The akonadiconsole shows .INBOX as remote identifier of the INBOX folder. Is
this the correct value?

All other folders (Sent, Trash, some custom folders) are created below the
INBOX folder.

I've played with the local folder subscription settings, but this does not
help. The server side subscription window is empty.
