What happens: The keyboard backlight and the power button light come on, but the screen remains blank. Using Ctr-Alt-F1 does nothing (can't get to a virtual console, indicating that it's not just X that has stopped) What I expect to happen: On opening of the laptop lid, I expect the lockscreen to show. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1415880] Re: 14e4:4365 bcmwl-kernel source: fix for null pointer crash
Daniel, SRUs are done from Development versions to more stable ones. This way we can guarantee that LTS versions are good (even more than just relying on verification process). It might take awhile for Trusty and Vivid to get sponsored. Brian, Thank you very much for the feedback. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to bcmwl in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1415880 Title: 14e4:4365 bcmwl-kernel source: fix for null pointer crash Status in Dell Sputnik: Confirmed Status in bcmwl package in Ubuntu: Fix Released Bug description: [Impact] * bcmwl does not compile on new kernels (or HWE kernels) * bcmwl suffers from null reference bug [Test Case] * public PPA provided to community and feedback * based on patch available to other distros * comment #42 [Regression Potential] * for changes on kernel support it may not compile (tested with 3.2, 3.13, 3.18 and 4.2) * for the null reference change -> proved to fix problem for community based on feedback [Other Info] Original bug description: The bcmwl package as of now misses one patch for a bug that occurs with BCM43142 and possibly other broadcom chipsets that will look like random disconnects, poor wifi signal and kernel warnings, See also #1379524. Adding the patch is a fairly simple process: * put the patch file in /usr/src/bcmwl-6.30.223.248+bdcom/patches * add the following line to /usr/src/bcmwl-6.30.223.248+bdcom/dkms.conf PATCH[7]="0014-null-pointer-crash.patch" * run: /usr/lib/dkms/common.postinst bcmwl 6.30.223.248+bdcom /usr/share/bcmwl x86_64 $(uname -r) This has fixed the issue for me. Edit: I just wanted to add that I did not write the patch; I merely downloaded it from a paste that was linked from the respective AUR package. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1495110] [NEW] External VGA port on laptop does not work anymore
Public bug reported: I have been using the laptop for almost 2 years now, and I have not had problem connecting to a projector via the external VGA port until recently. Sometime between April and now, there must have been a kernel upgrade that messed it up. I saw a few other bug reports that eventually suggests I go to kernel 3.16.0. When I was on 3.13.0-63, my VGA output would work with the boot up screen and the log in screen. But once I log on the VGA port seems to be inactive and I can't get the output back. HDMI still seems to work, though the projectors I have access to don't have HDMI inputs. After I upgraded to 3.16.0, the VGA output would still work during the boot up and log in. Again, once I log on the VGA stopped working. However, when I switched to a text terminal (e.g. Ctrl-Alt-F1) I can see the VGA output again. As soon as I switch back to GUI the VGA output stopped working. The "Display" setting in System Settings cannot find an external monitor, nor could xrandr. My current work around is to use the HDMI port with an HDMI -> VGA converter. That seems to do the trick for now. Both Display setting and xrandr can see the HDMI connection. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1485057] Re: "lsusb -v" as root freezes the kernel on Acer ES1-111; also freeze on shutdown
Current state of things: I've tracked down the code line where the freeze happens. It's in function ehci_halt within file ehci-hcd.c. The function is executed on shutdown as well as when the usb devices on the bus are about to be probed again. The latter is triggered by "lsusb -v" as root. Apparently, the hardware misbehaves by not responding to a "readl" call. As a workaround, it is possible to compile kernel 4.2 with a patch that disables the unused EHCI USB bus. However, this is *not* a generic solution! The same chip may be built into other computers, and the EHCI bus may be used there. ** Patch added: "Patch to blacklist the problematic EHCI bus. This is a workaround, NOT a solution!" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1485057/+attachment/4462350/+files/blacklist-evil-ehci-device.diff -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1485057 Title: "lsusb -v" as root freezes the kernel on Acer ES1-111; also freeze on shutdown Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Triaged Bug description: reproducible: always Steps to reproduce: - open a terminal - sudo bash - lsusb -v In a virtual terminal, the command prints the name of the first device it finds, then the system freezes completely. In a terminal of the desktop, I don't even get the name of the device, the system freezes immediately. Either way, I have to power off the machine. There is no kernel oops. Nothing is written to the log. The magic sysreq key yields no response, although I have verified that it works before triggering the freeze. I've narrowed down the problem by calling "lsusb -v -s ". The system freezes on both devices of bus 3 (003:001 and 003:002). For all other devices, it prints the expected output and continues to work. When calling lsusb as a regular user, I get "Couldn't open device, some information will be missing", then the regular output, and the system keeps running. Therefore I assume that the problem is somewhere in the kernel, when the devices are accessed. This is a regression. It used to work in 14.10, and fails to work since 15.04. It also used to work in 14.04.2, and fails in 14.04.3. It fails with mainline builds 4.2.0-rc6-unstable, 4.2.0-rc2-unstable, 4.1.0-rc2-vivid. (yeah, I've been trying for a while :-) Incidentally, the shutdown sequence also freezes with the kernels that exhibit the problem; but I cannot be sure that the cause is the same. I decided to first chase the USB freeze, because it was easier to gather information about that. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1481129] Re: System freeze when using Libre Office
The bug is not only triggered by LibreOffice: I managed to crash my machine simply by putting load on it ("git gc --aggresive") and trying to change Nautilus' preferences. It seems as if upstream kernel commit adc346b133c952ec6988d90f6fa79cbe0a3eb7ef /https://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/?id=adc346b133c952ec6988d90f6fa79cbe0a3eb7ef) needs to by back-ported in order to fix this problem. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1481129 Title: System freeze when using Libre Office Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in xorg package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: When using Libre office Draw, the system entirely froze. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1490543] Re: gsettings fails to set wallpaper
as of Sept 12 Wily updates gsettings still fails to work, reverts to default brown screen. Installed Utopic kernel on Wily, now Settings Appearance Wallpaper displays jpg fine. With Wily kernel displays unreadable. gsettings settings fails with Utopic kernel on Wily. With Utopic kernel on Wily,, Settings Appearance Wallpapers sets Wallpaper O.K. Nothing in syslog or .xsession-errors or Xorg.0.log when gsettings fails. Is there any way to get something back from gsettings when it doesn't work? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1490543 Title: gsettings fails to set wallpaper Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: until recent updates, gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.background picture-uri 'file:home/jerry/Pictures/Shark_Island.jpg' reset wallpaper to the desired picture. Most of the time Wily boots to a horizontally hashed wallpaper which used to be corrected by doing gsettings once or twice or three times, now I have to go to settings > wallpaper > to set the jpg several times until it clears up. Now gsettings fails, gets the original brown screen. gsettings is broken failing to set the desired wallpaper.
