[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1594023] Re: Poweroff or reboot hangs. Laptop won't shutdown. 16.04
Every machine is different. Here's the grub that I use on 'doorstop' machines: # If you change this file, run 'update-grub' afterwards to update GRUB_DEFAULT="0" GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE="true" GRUB_TIMEOUT="10" GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR="`lsb_release -i -s 2> /dev/null || echo Debian`" GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="elevator=deadline quiet splash plymouth.enable=0 libahci.ignore_sss=1 noefi" GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="libata.force=noncq" GRUB_GFXMODE="1920x1200x24 It knocks a few seconds off of boot times, and shuts them down in a heartbeat. Here's the 'systemd-analyze time' result on my Dell Dimension 3000 box, circa 2004: Startup finished in 3.650s (kernel) + 7.044s (userspace) = 10.694s graphical.target reached after 7.008s in userspace No joke... -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1594023 Title: Poweroff or reboot hangs. Laptop won't shutdown. 16.04 Status in Ubuntu: New Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: This is about a fresh Ubuntu 16.04 install on a new laptop (asus x540sa). After pressing the shutdown button in the start menu; the shutdown procedure starts and in the final splash screen the system just hangs. Tried a second time by pressing Esc once the splash screen showed up and I saw that it reaches the line "Reached target shutdown" and just stops there, no matter how long I leave it there the machine won't turn off. I also tried a Kubuntu 16.04 fresh install on the same machine and it hanged too at the final splash screen where the pulsating logo stopped. Then I tried with Esc only to see the exact same line in the end. The issue seems to affect lately quite many users as shown by the google results of the past month / week or so. I have also tried shutting down from the console with shutdown -and all the parameters after that suggested online- and sudo poweroff but unfortunately they didn't do the trick. The exact same situation occurred. Unmounting the swap as suggested online doesn't work. Also rebooting the system is not working either due to the same issue. So right now the only way for me to poweroff the machine is to press the power button on the keyboard continuously. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.Install OS 2.Do something, anything or nothing 3.Try to shutdown or reboot Actual Results: The computer is not shutting down: "Reached target shutdown" and hangs there. Expected Results: Powering off the machine. For what it's worth, closing the lid won't suspend the system, but using the menu buttons for suspension will do it. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1633702] Re: wistron_btns module possible BUG on FJ AMILO Pro V3505.
This bug still exists in 18.04 LTS (and has been present for many versions). Verified on an Acer Travelmate 2420. Blacklisting the module solves the problem at the expense of the buttons/switch not functioning properly. This fix should be ported into the kernel. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1633702 Title: wistron_btns module possible BUG on FJ AMILO Pro V3505. The same BUG arise on all the recent kernels, including the one I'm reporting about, even at installation time from the Ubuntu media, at module "load time". By the way, once the kernel report this OOps, the system doesn't power off or reboot correctly at shutdown time, it simply hangs, even when installing the system from the media, a really serious issue for new, naive users. The only way to solve the problem seems to "blacklist" the module in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist,conf, but, unfortunately, this will "LOCK" the wireless module in its enabled or disables state and require to boot a different kernel to unlock its state. I did some investigation on the Net about this issue and I found an interesting report about this problem, that seems known at least from kernel version 3.12, http://marc.info/?l=linux-kernel=138463383801233=2 I tested the suggested patch against the linux/drivers/input/misc/wistron_btns.c gentoo 4.4.21 source, my main system, and, well, it correct the BUG, not anymore any Oops and the button seems to work correctly. You will find the patch I applied to the wistron_btns.c source as an attachment to this report: it is a really simple patch that I'm almost sure (I didn't verified it) it may be applied unchanged to the 4.4.0-43-generic Ubuntu kernel image sources. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1874698] Re: [OMEN by HP Laptop 15-dh0xxx, Realtek ALC285, Black Mic, Left] Recording problem
I installed Pop_OS! 20.04.0 64 bit LTS GNU/Linux bare metal on my late 2019 CUK HP Omen 15t gaming notebook PC this past Monday, June 8th, 2020 at around 2:15 PM EDT. For the past several days, I have done my best to do in depth research into the root cause of why my sound card and microphone do not work properly and I learned a lot of technical information. I also spent a lot of time to download, install, configure and optimize my software packages and products and I discovered that some of the third-party software vendors only officially support Ubuntu up to version 18.04.x 64 bit LTS, but they are in the process of patching and updating their software products for 20.04.0 64 bit LTS at this time. In short, my choice of Pop_OS! in of itself may preclude me from receiving official technical support in order to troubleshoot some third-party software products that I am currently using and with which I have relatively minor bugs with some apps. The more serious issue with Pop_OS! is getting the Sound Open Firmware, device drivers and topology along with updated versions of the required software packages an newer Linux kernel version not to mention hardware specific hacks to configure the sound card and digital microphone are not yet available for Ubuntu 20.04.0 64 bit LTS and my HP Omen 15t PC; future step by step documentation that provides a working solution will almost certainly require Ubuntu 20.04.x 64 bit LTS especially with regards to the standard GRUB2 boot loader. At this point, I decided to mark this Ubuntu Launchpad bug as it does not affect me to stop receiving notifications in the future. I have decided to use my Easeus To-Do Home software product which I paid for and licensed on my late 2019 CUK HP Omen 15t gaming notebook PC and to plug in my Transcend StoreJet H3 2 TB portable hard disk drive to restore my disk image and return back to a Microsoft Windows 10 64 bit Pro edition version 1909 as of May 2020 Windows Update environment if for no other reason that 100% compatibility and to receive official help and technical support from Computer Upgrade King for the next three years. This was an eye opening learning experience that yielded a valuable lesson and one of my former friends told me not to fuck with my Windows desktop operating system when I received my product a few weeks ago. His common sense advice should have been heeded by myself and I am going to take it and restore Windows on my HP PC this weekend. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to alsa-ucm-conf in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1874698 Title: [OMEN by HP Laptop 15-dh0xxx, Realtek ALC285, Black Mic, Left] Recording problem Status in HWE Next: New Status in OEM Priority Project: Fix Committed Status in alsa-ucm-conf package in Ubuntu: Fix Released Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in alsa-ucm-conf source package in Focal: Fix Committed Status in linux source package in Focal: Fix Committed Status in alsa-ucm-conf source package in Groovy: Fix Released Bug description: This is for alsa-ucm-conf: The patches are already in the mainline alsa-ucm-conf, so only sent the SRU for focal [Impact] On the machines without Intel HDMI, the sof driver will fail to initialize. Can confirm https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1835660/comments/26 What I did was I changed `COMPRESS=lz4` to `COMPRESS=gzip` in `/etc/initramfs-tools/initramfs.conf`, then `sudo update-initramfs -u` After, without a reboot I've changed `COMPRESS` back to `lz4`, and then `sudo update-initramfs -u` And after the reboot that error is gone. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1835660 Title: initramfs unpacking failed Status in initramfs-tools package in Ubuntu: Invalid Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: "initramfs unpacking failed: Decoding failed", message appears on boot up. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1874444] Re: Bionic ubuntu ethtool doesn't check ring parameters boundaries
Question - when is this fix expected to be released to the official Bionic and Xenial AMIs in AWS? Thank! -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/187 Title: Bionic ubuntu ethtool doesn't check ring parameters boundaries Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Fix Released Status in linux source package in Xenial: Fix Released Status in linux source package in Bionic: Fix Released Bug description: [Impact] * There's a bad behavior in the ena driver ringparam setting on kernels 4.4 and 4.15, if an invalid ringparam is provided to ethtool. * Upstream Linux kernel implemented ring parameter boundaries check in commit: 37e2d99b59c4 ("ethtool: Ensure new ring parameters are within bounds during SRINGPARAM") [ git.kernel.org/linus/37e2d99b59c4 ]. Due to this commit, the community doesn't usually allow ring parameter boundary checks in driver code. * Xenial/Bionic kernels don't include this patch, and some network drivers (like ena) rely on this patch for boundary checking of ring params. So, we are hereby requesting the commit inclusion in these kernel versions. [Test case] 1. In AWS, create a new c5.4xlarge instance with the Ubuntu 18.04 official ami (uses the ENA network driver) and update to latest kernel/reboot. 2. Run ethtool -g ens5 output: Ring parameters for ens5: Pre-set maximums: RX: 16384 RX Mini: 0 RX Jumbo: 0 TX: 1024 Current hardware settings: RX: 1024 RX Mini: 0 RX Jumbo: 0 TX: 1024 3. Change the TX/RX ring size to a legal number within boundaries - works! 4. Change the TX/RX ring size to an illegal number (such as 2048 for TX) with the command - "sudo ethtool -G ens5 tx 2048". Expected behavior - "Cannot set device ring parameters: Invalid argument" Actual behavior - causes a driver hang since boundaries are not checked by ethtool, effectively hanging the instance (given that AWS has no console to allow system manipulation). [Regression Potential] Since that the commit is present in kernels v4.16+ (including Ubuntu) and is quite small and self-contained, the regression risk is very reduced. One potential "regression" would be if some driver has bugs and provide bad values on get_ringparams, then the validation would be broken (allowing illegal values or refusing legal ones), but this wouldn't be a regression in the hereby proposed patch itself, it'd be only exposed by the patch. I have Focal Fossa installed. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to bluez in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1883028 Title: Bluetooth devices don't reconnect after sleep. Status in bluez package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: Bluetooth devices don't reconnect after sleep, or something along those lines. I have experienced this with a BT audio receiver and BT Keyboard. One way to repro is to switch BT pairing on multi-pairing keyboard, then switch back to Ubuntu. The BT connection state will be very confused, keyboard will not work. Another way to repro is to get a bluetooth audio receiver, pair it. Let the BT device (or PC?) sleep... now wake up the system. The audio will not play. BT UI slider says disconnected. If you click the slider it will go back to off. If you click it quickly >25 times, no joke, it will reconnect and work. FYI: Raspbian handles the keyboard fine, have not tested the audio. The customer visible symptom is that the network is not functional in the kdump kernel, so the dump file must be stored on the local disk and cannot be written over the network. The problem only occurs when Accelerated Networking is enabled. It’s a relatively obscure scenario, which is why the problem has not surfaced before now. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1851518] Re: [950SBE/951SBE, Realtek ALC298, Speaker, Internal] No sound on internal speakers, very very quiet on headphones
Good news! A very smart Arch user by the name of ronincoder discovered a fix for the headphone jack. I worked with ronincoder to make a kernel patch [1] and our patch made it into the 5.7 kernel release! It was also applied to the 5.4 LTS kernel. I booted both 5.7.2 and 5.4.46 and the headphone jack audio is loud and clear. :) Does it work for you? It should if you have a Samsung Notebook 9 Pro NP930SBE-K01US or NP930MBE-K04US (ronincoder's is the former, mine is the latter). You can check your laptop model by running alsa_info.sh and looking at "Board Name". The Realtek ALC298 codec in the NP930SBE-K01US and NP930MBE-K04US identifies itself with "Subsystem Id" 0x144dc169 and 0x144dc176, respectively. If snd_hda_intel sees either of these ids it implements the fix. What about the speakers? I reported the no-sound-on-internal-speakers issue on the kernel bugzilla [2]. Linux sound maintainer Jaroslav Kysela speculates that there may be some amplifiers connected to the HDA codec which are not initialized by the BIOS, and are thus not active in Linux. He suggests dumping the codec communication for the Windows driver using QEMU. We could then parse the dump and replay the communication in Linux using Early Patching [3] or writing another kernel patch. It's been a month since Jaroslav made this suggestion and I've made some progress but I still don't have a good dump. Please join the discussion on the kernel bugzilla if you'd like to help me. ^^ [1] For reference, our patch made it into Linus' tree as commit 14425f1f521f (ALSA: hda/realtek: Add quirk for Samsung Notebook).
