Title:
  Network lost after long sleep

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
  Hello,
After a long time in sleep mode, my Desktop running Ubuntu 20.04 loses its
network ethernet link.
the demsg shows the following lines after sleep exit:

  [10402.613687] PM: suspend exit
  [10403.035311] ata1: SATA link up 6.0 Gbps (SStatus 133 SControl 300)
  [10403.121362] ata1.00: configured for UDMA/133
  [10403.363882] e1000e: enp0s25 NIC Link is Down
[10406.484276] e1000e: enp0s25 NIC Link is Up 10 Mbps Full Duplex, Flow
Control: Rx/Tx
  [10406.484281] e1000e :00:19.0 enp0s25: 10/100 speed: disabling TSO
  [10406.484322] IPv6: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_CHANGE): enp0s25: link becomes ready

the ethernet is up but at 10 M / full duplex
DHCP of my router does not give any address.

the only way to retrieve a Full 1000 M functionnal link is to reboot
  the machine.

Can't determine how much time of sleep it needs to reproduce, since an
immediate sleep/wake-up does not produce network loss.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1594023] Re: Poweroff or reboot hangs. Laptop won't shutdown. 16.04

2020-06-13 Thread VinDSL
Every machine is different. Here's the grub that I use on 'doorstop'
machines:

# If you change this file, run 'update-grub' afterwards to update
GRUB_DEFAULT="0"
GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE="true"
GRUB_TIMEOUT="10"
GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR="`lsb_release -i -s 2> /dev/null || echo Debian`"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="elevator=deadline quiet splash plymouth.enable=0
libahci.ignore_sss=1 noefi"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="libata.force=noncq"
GRUB_GFXMODE="1920x1200x24

It knocks a few seconds off of boot times, and shuts them down in a
heartbeat.

Here's the 'systemd-analyze time' result on my Dell Dimension 3000 box,
circa 2004:

Startup finished in 3.650s (kernel) + 7.044s (userspace) = 10.694s
graphical.target reached after 7.008s in userspace

No joke...

Title:
Poweroff or reboot hangs. Laptop won't shutdown. 16.04

Status in Ubuntu:
  New
Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
This is about a fresh Ubuntu 16.04 install on a new laptop (asus
x540sa). After pressing the shutdown button in the start menu; the
shutdown procedure starts and in the final splash screen the system
just hangs. Tried a second time by pressing Esc once the splash screen
showed up and I saw that it reaches the line "Reached target shutdown"
and just stops there, no matter how long I leave it there the machine
  won't turn off.

I also tried a Kubuntu 16.04 fresh install on the same machine and it
hanged too at the final splash screen where the pulsating logo
stopped. Then I tried with Esc only to see the exact same line in the
  end.

The issue seems to affect lately quite many users as shown by the
google results of the past month / week or so.

I have also tried shutting down from the console with shutdown -and
all the parameters after that suggested online- and sudo poweroff but
unfortunately they didn't do the trick. The exact same situation
  occurred.

Unmounting the swap as suggested online doesn't work.

Also rebooting the system is not working either due to the same issue.

So right now the only way for me to poweroff the machine is to press
the power button on the keyboard continuously.

  Reproducible: Always

  Steps to Reproduce:
  1.Install OS
  2.Do something, anything or nothing
  3.Try to shutdown or reboot

  Actual Results:
The computer is not shutting down: "Reached target shutdown" and hangs there.

  Expected Results:
  Powering off the machine.

For what it's worth, closing the lid won't suspend the system, but
using the menu buttons for suspension will do it.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1882991] Re: Kernel 5.4.0-37-generic leads to black screen after grub, 5.4.0-26-generic works normally

2020-06-13 Thread Derek
At some point I was able to purge anything installed with *nvidia* in
it... reboot and get UI without `nomodeset` intervention. I then
installed `nvidia-driver-435` and have left it alone since then. I'll
try 440 again another time.

I'm not sure of the firmware policy, so I can add more detail or close it
depending on the answer.

In short, I installed 20.04 on an old repurposed iMac with Broadcom
4322 wifi. Everything went well, but no network access. Dmesg said
  "firmware not found."

I went thru a hell of a time to figure out what to do, find the
firmware on another computer, and sneaker-net it over.

Not sure if this is a common enough occurrence to put it on the
install disc like the nvidia stuff, thought I'd ask.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1633702] Re: wistron_btns module possible BUG on FJ AMILO Pro V3505.

2020-06-13 Thread Jim MacKenzie
This bug still exists in 18.04 LTS (and has been present for many
versions).

Verified on an Acer Travelmate 2420. Blacklisting the module solves the
problem at the expense of the buttons/switch not functioning properly.

This fix should be ported into the kernel.

from the wistron_btns kernel module, used on FJ AMILO Pro V3505, to enable
and disable the wireless card module from the notebook function button.

The same BUG arise on all the recent kernels, including the one I'm reporting
about, even at installation time from the Ubuntu media, at module "load time".

By the way, once the kernel report this OOps, the system doesn't power
off or reboot correctly at shutdown time, it simply hangs, even when
installing the system from the media, a really serious issue for new,
  naive users.

The only way to solve the problem seems to "blacklist" the module in
/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist,conf, but, unfortunately, this will "LOCK"
the wireless module in its enabled or disables state and require to
boot a different kernel to unlock its state.

I did some investigation on the Net about this issue and I found an
interesting report about this problem, that seems known at least from
  kernel version 3.12,

I tested the suggested patch against the
linux/drivers/input/misc/wistron_btns.c gentoo 4.4.21 source, my main
system, and, well, it correct the BUG, not anymore any Oops and the
  button seems to work correctly.

You will find the patch I applied to the wistron_btns.c source as an
attachment to this report: it is a really simple patch that I'm almost
sure (I didn't verified it) it may be applied unchanged to the
  4.4.0-43-generic Ubuntu kernel image sources.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1874698] Re: [OMEN by HP Laptop 15-dh0xxx, Realtek ALC285, Black Mic, Left] Recording problem

2020-06-13 Thread Welly Wu
I installed Pop_OS! 20.04.0 64 bit LTS GNU/Linux bare metal on my late
2019 CUK HP Omen 15t gaming notebook PC this past Monday, June 8th, 2020
at around 2:15 PM EDT. For the past several days, I have done my best to
do in depth research into the root cause of why my sound card and
microphone do not work properly and I learned a lot of technical
information. I also spent a lot of time to download, install, configure
and optimize my software packages and products and I discovered that
some of the third-party software vendors only officially support Ubuntu
up to version 18.04.x 64 bit LTS, but they are in the process of
patching and updating their software products for 20.04.0 64 bit LTS at
this time. In short, my choice of Pop_OS! in of itself may preclude me
from receiving official technical support in order to troubleshoot some
third-party software products that I am currently using and with which I
have relatively minor bugs with some apps. The more serious issue with
Pop_OS! is getting the Sound Open Firmware, device drivers and topology
along with updated versions of the required software packages an newer
Linux kernel version not to mention hardware specific hacks to configure
the sound card and digital microphone are not yet available for Ubuntu
20.04.0 64 bit LTS and my HP Omen 15t PC; future step by step
documentation that provides a working solution will almost certainly
require Ubuntu 20.04.x 64 bit LTS especially with regards to the
standard GRUB2 boot loader.

At this point, I decided to mark this Ubuntu Launchpad bug as it does
not affect me to stop receiving notifications in the future. I have
decided to use my Easeus To-Do Home software product which I paid for
and licensed on my late 2019 CUK HP Omen 15t gaming notebook PC and to
plug in my Transcend StoreJet H3 2 TB portable hard disk drive to
restore my disk image and return back to a Microsoft Windows 10 64 bit
Pro edition version 1909 as of May 2020 Windows Update environment if
for no other reason that 100% compatibility and to receive official help
and technical support from Computer Upgrade King for the next three
years.

This was an eye opening learning experience that yielded a valuable
lesson and one of my former friends told me not to fuck with my Windows
desktop operating system when I received my product a few weeks ago. His
common sense advice should have been heeded by myself and I am going to
take it and restore Windows on my HP PC this weekend.

After fixing the kernel, we also need to change the ucm2 to make it

Boot the kernel on the machines without Intel HDMI audio, everything

Low, these 2 patches are already in the mainline alsa-ucm-conf. And we

The patch is already in the oem-5.6 kernel and unstable kernel, so only

On the machines without Intel HDMI, the sof driver will fail to initialize.

  [Fix]
Intel upstream 2 patches in the kernel to fix it.

  [Test Case]
Boot the kernel on the machines without Intel HDMI audio, everything
  works well including the audio.

  [Regression Risk]
Low, these 2 patches are already in the mainline kernel.

On Ubuntu 20.04, by default, sof-audio-pci is used. I only have "Dummy
output" in pavucontrol. To fix this, I modified /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-
base.conf and added "options snd-intel-dspcfg dsp_driver=1" so that
now "snd-hda-intel" is loaded instead of sof-audio-pci. While the
speakers are working fine, I do not have the internal microphone
  working (suspect a digital array).

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1835660] Re: initramfs unpacking failed

2020-06-13 Thread Denis
Can confirm
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1835660/comments/26
What I did was I changed

`COMPRESS=lz4` to `COMPRESS=gzip` in `/etc/initramfs-tools/initramfs.conf`, then
`sudo update-initramfs -u`

After, without a reboot I've changed `COMPRESS` back to `lz4`, and then
`sudo update-initramfs -u`

And after the reboot that error is gone.

"initramfs unpacking failed: Decoding failed", message appears on

If I "update-initramfs" using gzip instead of lz, then boot up passes
  without decoding failed message.

  ---

However, we currently believe that the decoding error reported in
dmesg is actually harmless and has no impact on usability on the
  system.

Switching from lz4 to gzip compression, simply papers over the
warning, without any benefits, and slows down boot.

Kernel should be fixed to correctly parse lz4 compressed initrds, or
at least lower the warning, to not be user visible as an error.

Title:
System lockup when copying exactly 98 GB from NVME to USB3 device

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Hi,

I am on a Thinkpad 25. When copying from the integrated nvme to an
externally connected USB3 Sandisk Extreme Portable SSD using dd, the
system locks up (completely with stuttering sound and the screen going
black after 10 secs) at the 98 GB mark.

  Command I am running:

  dd if=/dev/nvme0n1 of=/dev/sda bs=1M status=progress

Kernel output: kern1.log attached, system freezes

Alternatively, when trying to copy to an image on the file system: dd
  if=/dev/nvme0n1 of=/mnt/sandisk/nvme0n1.img bs=1M status=progress

Kernel output: kern2.log attached, system freezes

It works perfectly fine, when I run dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda and dd
if=/dev/nvme0n1 of=/dev/null, way beyond the 98GB mark. Also badblocks
does not report any errors on /dev/sda.

  Kernel version: Ubuntu 5.4.0-37.41-generic 5.4.41
  lspci -vnvn: attached
  lsusb -vvv: attached

  Cheers!

Alternatively, when trying to copy to an image on the file system: dd
  if=/dev/nvme0n1 of=/mnt/sandisk/nvme0n1.img bs=1M status=progress

Kernel output: kern2.log attached, system freezes

It works perfectly fine, when I run dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda and dd
if=/dev/nvme0n1 of=/dev/null, way beyond the 98GB mark. Also badblocks
does not report any errors on /dev/sda.

  Kernel version: Ubuntu 5.4.0-37.41-generic 5.4.41
  lspci -vnvn: attached
  lsusb -vvv: attached

  Cheers!

externally connected USB3 Sandisk Extreme Portable SSD using dd, the
system locks up (completely with stuttering sound and the screen going
black after 10 secs) at the 98 GB mark.

  Command I am running:

  dd if=/dev/nvme0n1 of=/dev/sda bs=1M status=progress

Kernel output: kern1.log attached, system freezes

Alternatively, when trying to copy to an image on the file system: dd
  if=/dev/nvme0n1 of=/mnt/sandisk/nvme0n1.img bs=1M status=progress

Kernel output: kern2.log attached, system freezes

It works perfectly fine, when I run dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda and dd
if=/dev/nvme0n1 of=/dev/null, way beyond the 98GB mark. Also badblocks
does not report any errors on /dev/sda.

  Kernel version: Ubuntu 5.4.0-37.41-generic 5.4.41
  lspci -vnvn: attached
  lsusb -vvv: attached

  Cheers!

Alternatively, when trying to copy to an image on the file system: dd
  if=/dev/nvme0n1 of=/mnt/sandisk/nvme0n1.img bs=1M status=progress

Kernel output: kern2.log attached, system freezes

It works perfectly fine, when I run dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda and dd
if=/dev/nvme0n1 of=/dev/null, way beyond the 98GB mark. Also badblocks
does not report any errors on /dev/sda.

  Kernel version: Ubuntu 5.4.0-37.41-generic 5.4.41
  lspci -vnvn: attached
  lsusb -vvv: attached

  Cheers!

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1874444] Re: Bionic ubuntu ethtool doesn't check ring parameters boundaries

2020-06-13 Thread Arthur Kiyanovski
Question - when is this fix expected to be released to the official Bionic and
Xenial AMIs in AWS?
Thank!

Title:
Bionic ubuntu ethtool doesn't check ring parameters boundaries

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in linux source package in Xenial:
  Fix Released
Status in linux source package in Bionic:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  [Impact]
  * There's a bad behavior in the ena driver ringparam setting on kernels 4.4
and 4.15, if an invalid ringparam is provided to ethtool.

  * Upstream Linux kernel implemented ring parameter boundaries check in
commit: 37e2d99b59c4 ("ethtool: Ensure new ring parameters are within bounds
during SRINGPARAM") [ git.kernel.org/linus/37e2d99b59c4 ].
Due to this commit, the community doesn't usually allow ring parameter
boundary checks in driver code.

  * Xenial/Bionic kernels don't include this patch, and some network
drivers (like ena) rely on this patch for boundary checking of ring
params. So, we are hereby requesting the commit inclusion in these
  kernel versions.

  [Test case]
  1. In AWS, create a new c5.4xlarge instance with the Ubuntu 18.04 official
ami (uses the ENA network driver) and update to latest kernel/reboot.

  2. Run ethtool -g ens5
  output:
  Ring parameters for ens5:
  Pre-set maximums:
  RX: 16384
  RX Mini: 0
  RX Jumbo: 0
  TX: 1024
  Current hardware settings:
  RX: 1024
  RX Mini: 0
  RX Jumbo: 0
  TX: 1024

  3. Change the TX/RX ring size to a legal number within boundaries -
  works!

  4. Change the TX/RX ring size to an illegal number (such as 2048 for
TX) with the command - "sudo ethtool -G ens5 tx 2048".

Expected behavior - "Cannot set device ring parameters: Invalid argument"
Actual behavior - causes a driver hang since boundaries are not checked by
ethtool, effectively hanging the instance (given that AWS has no console to
allow system manipulation).

  [Regression Potential]

Since that the commit is present in kernels v4.16+ (including Ubuntu)
and is quite small and self-contained, the regression risk is very
  reduced.

One potential "regression" would be if some driver has bugs and
provide bad values on get_ringparams, then the validation would be
broken (allowing illegal values or refusing legal ones), but this
wouldn't be a regression in the hereby proposed patch itself, it'd be
  only exposed by the patch.

2020-06-13 Thread jiha
For me (on 19.10)
kernel 5.3.0-40-generic is the last good version.
kernel 5.3.0-53-generic is the first bad version.

support for trackpoint / multi-touch landed with kernel 5.x in ubuntu.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1874698] Re: [OMEN by HP Laptop 15-dh0xxx, Realtek ALC285, Black Mic, Left] Recording problem

2020-06-13 Thread Welly Wu
Hugh Chao:

I edited /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf by adding this line of code:

a. options snd-intel-dspcfg dsp_driver=1

I also edited it to remove this line of code:

b. options snd-hda-intel index=0 model=laptop-dmic

I also edited /etc/pulse/default.pa by re-adding these two lines of
code:

c. load-module module-alsa-sink device=hw:0,0 channels=2
d. load-module module-alsa-source device=hw:0,6 channels=2

I restarted my HP PC and audio output shows Speakers- Built In Audio and
clicking the Test button does produce audio from both the left and right
speaker channels. Audio Input shows Internal Microphone - Built In
Audio, but it does not seem to record the sound of my voice or
background noise again.

This is my output from running inxi -Ax:

It looks like snd_hda_intel is the driver used for the Intel Cannon Lake PCH
cAVS and NVIDIA TU104 HD Audio while the vendor changed to Hewlett Packard
after following your instructions exactly.

Again, I apologize for sounding like an idiot, but what did following
your instructions exactly do in terms of making changes? Why is it that
my digital microphone changed from Rear Microphone - Built In Audio to
Internal Microphone - Built In Audio and why does it still not pick up
background audio or the sound of my voice?

Bluetooth devices don't reconnect after sleep, or something along

I have experienced this with a BT audio receiver and BT Keyboard. One
way to repro is to switch BT pairing on multi-pairing keyboard, then
switch back to Ubuntu. The BT connection state will be very confused,
  keyboard will not work.

Another way to repro is to get a bluetooth audio receiver, pair it.
Let the BT device (or PC?) sleep... now wake up the system. The audio
will not play. BT UI slider says disconnected. If you click the
slider it will go back to off. If you click it quickly >25 times, no
joke, it will reconnect and work.

FYI: Raspbian handles the keyboard fine, have not tested the audio.

Bluetooth devices don't reconnect after sleep.

Status in bluez package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
Bluetooth devices don't reconnect after sleep, or something along
  those lines.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1850876] Re: CONFIG_DRM_V3D is disabled for linux-raspi2 of eoan

2020-06-13 Thread Hui Wang
I backported some patches from rpi-5.4.y to ubuntu 5.3 kernel, and
enabled V3D driver. Please test if it works or not:

Status in linux-raspi2 source package in Eoan:

Bug description:
We enabled DRM_VC4 in the linux-raspi2 of eoan, but disabled the
  DRM_V3D.

In fact the DRM_V3D is crucial for graphical applications (such as
ubuntu-desktop :) as it removes the graphical overhead from the cpu to
the gpu, making the applications work much faster.

  Please refer to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-
  raspi2/+bug/1848703/comments/32

  [Impact]
Users reported that we should enable the DRM_V3D, then the GPU will
be fully used when running "ubuntu-desktop"

  [Fix]
Enable the DRM_V3D, the v3d.ko will be built

  [Test Case]
Users already tested it, it worked well.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-raspi2/+bug/1848703/comments/36

  [Regression Risk]
Low, I already did building test for arm64 and armhf, all passed.
And uers already tested the kernel module, it worked as expected.

[linux-azure] Two Fixes For kdump Over Network

Status in linux-azure package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Microsoft would like to request two kdump related fixes in all
releases supported on Azure. The two commits are:

c81992e7f4aa1 ("PCI: hv: Retry PCI bus D0 entry on invalid device state")
83cc3508ffaa6 ("PCI: hv: Fix the PCI HyperV probe failure path to release
resource properly")

These are in the virtual PCI driver for Hyper-V. The customer visible
symptom is that the network is not functional in the kdump kernel, so
the dump file must be stored on the local disk and cannot be written
  over the network.

The problem only occurs when Accelerated Networking is enabled. It’s
a relatively obscure scenario, which is why the problem has not
surfaced before now. But we have an important customer who wants the
  “dump-file-over-the-network” functionality to work.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1851518] Re: [950SBE/951SBE, Realtek ALC298, Speaker, Internal] No sound on internal speakers, very very quiet on headphones

2020-06-13 Thread gannon1
Good news! A very smart Arch user by the name of ronincoder discovered a
fix for the headphone jack. I worked with ronincoder to make a kernel
patch [1] and our patch made it into the 5.7 kernel release! It was also
applied to the 5.4 LTS kernel. I booted both 5.7.2 and 5.4.46 and the
headphone jack audio is loud and clear. :)

Does it work for you? It should if you have a Samsung Notebook 9 Pro
NP930SBE-K01US or NP930MBE-K04US (ronincoder's is the former, mine is
the latter). You can check your laptop model by running alsa_info.sh and
looking at "Board Name". The Realtek ALC298 codec in the NP930SBE-K01US
and NP930MBE-K04US identifies itself with "Subsystem Id" 0x144dc169 and
0x144dc176, respectively. If snd_hda_intel sees either of these ids it
implements the fix.

What about the speakers? I reported the no-sound-on-internal-speakers
issue on the kernel bugzilla [2]. Linux sound maintainer Jaroslav Kysela
speculates that there may be some amplifiers connected to the HDA codec
which are not initialized by the BIOS, and are thus not active in Linux.
He suggests dumping the codec communication for the Windows driver using
QEMU. We could then parse the dump and replay the communication in Linux
using Early Patching [3] or writing another kernel patch. It's been a
month since Jaroslav made this suggestion and I've made some progress
but I still don't have a good dump. Please join the discussion on the
kernel bugzilla if you'd like to help me. ^^

[1] For reference, our patch made it into Linus' tree as commit 14425f1f521f
(ALSA: hda/realtek: Add quirk for Samsung Notebook).

  BCM43602 [14e4:43ba] Subsystem [1028:0020]: Upgraded to 20.04 and wifi
  broke

Status in wpa source package in Focal:

Status in wpa source package in Groovy:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  [Impact]

   * A driver supports FT (IEEE 802.11r-2008 or fast BSS transition (FT),
also called fast roaming) if it either supports SME or the
NL80211_CMD_UPDATE_FT_IES command. When selecting AKM suites,
wpa_supplicant currently doesn't take into account whether or not either
of those conditions are met. This can cause association failures, e.g.,
when an AP supports both WPA-EAP and FT-EAP but the driver doesn't
support FT (wpa_supplicant will decide to do FT-EAP since it is unaware
 the driver doesn't support it).

   * This is known to affect users at least users with popular chip-sets,
such as BCM20703A1 or BCM4350 (notably present in the popular XPS 13/15
 laptops).

   * The upload fixes the bug by allowing an FT suite to be selected only
when the driver also supports FT.

  [Test Case]

   * requires affected hardware and wpa_supplicant built with CONFIG_IEEE80211R
and connecting to an AP supporting WPA-EAP and FT-EAP

  [Regression Potential]

   * a driver not advertising correctly its support for SME or the
NL80211_CMD_UPDATE_FT_IES command via the drv_flags would be prevented from
using FT but would still be able to connect to APs

Bug description:
  == SRU Justification ==
A regression was introduced in 4.13-rc1 and newer kernels. This
regression caused battery drain during system suspend, hibernation or
shutdown for some PCI devices that are not allowed by user space to wake
up the system from sleep (or power off).

This fix has been submitted upstream and cc'd to stable. However, it
has not landed in linux-next or mainline yet, so it is being sent as
  SAUCE.

  == Fix ==
UBUNTU: SAUCE: PCI / PM: Check device_may_wakeup() in pci_enable_wake()

  == Regression Potential ==
Medium. Commit fixes a current regresssion, but affects PCI power management.
It will also be submitted to upstream stable and have additional review.
The commit is a clean cherry pick, builds successfully and was confirmed
  to resolve regression.

  == Test Case ==
A test kernel was built with this patch and tested by the original bug
reporter.
The bug reporter states the test kernel resolved the bug.

  == Original Bug Description ==
I am using hp AY008tx laptop , and many other laptop users (HP) are also
facing the same issue . The problem don't occur when i install windows 10 .
Now, only ubuntu is installed.
i am using latest bios insyde20 rev 5.(latest)
WOL disabled and no usb device connected
  checked my battery .
it don't happen when i remove battery and plug it again after shutdown.
