Bug description:
  [Impact]
  FM350(mtk_t7xx) can't suspend sometimes.

kernel: [ 12.917462] mtk_t7xx :57:00.0: PM: failed to suspend async:
error -14

  [Fix]
The commit in v6.4-rc3 waits for the device to be ready before suspending.
ab87603b2511 net: wwan: t7xx: Ensure init is completed before system sleep

  [Test]
Verified on the machine with FM350 wwan module.

  [Where problems could occur]
If the wwan is not ready before the time is up, it results in -ETIMEDOUT.
However, in this scenario, we will encounter the same issue where the system
fails to enter suspend mode. Therefore, it will not introduce regressions or
new issues.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 2019869] Re: nvidia-dkms-390: better support for kernel 6.2

2023-05-25 Thread Andrea Righi

Instead of disabling acpi support completely with nvidia-dkms-390, we
should try instead to see if it's possible to support it somehow.

  [Fix]

This patch looks promising (even if it says huge hack in the comments...):

https://gitlab.com/herecura/packages/nvidia-390xx-dkms/-/blob/780a3c8b159f24c14e6c1cb35fd747338aefea39/kernel-6.2.patch

Apply this patch and drop any 6.0 and 6.2 related patches.

  [Regression potential]

With this patch nvidia-dkms-390 should build against 6.2 kernels
without disabling any feature, but users of this driver may experience
kernel bugs / crashes. However, the nvidia 390 driver is unmaintained
so we should start to consider phasing it out.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 2020647] Re: Upgrade from 22.04 to 22.10 won't boot

2023-05-25 Thread Jan Pfeifer
A few updates: I downloaded a Ubuntu 23.04 in a USB stick and I can
consistently boot from it, it uses kernel 6.2.0.

But when I try to boot it the same kernel from my hard drive
(/dev/nvme0n1p1) it freezes just after grub initializes initrd --
nothing is printed, even though I passed "loglevel=7" parameter to the
kernel.

I'm still able to boot on a 5.17 (Linux galactica 5.17.5-051705-generic)
kernel on the new system.

So I tried to eliminate differences, and copied over the directories
`/etc/modprobe.d` and `/etc/modules-load.d` and the `/etc/modules` file
from my usb stick to my system. That didn't solve it though. But I did a
diff of which kernel modules are installed in my system by default
(kernel 5.17.5) that are not in the usb stick 23.04 (kernel 6.2.0).
These are:

> bridge
> br_netfilter
> dm_crypt
> fb_sys_fops
> hwmon_vid
> intel_tcc_cooling
> llc
> nf_conntrack
> nf_conntrack_netlink
> nf_defrag_ipv4
> nf_defrag_ipv6
> nf_log_syslog
> nf_nat
> nfnetlink
> nf_tables
> nft_chain_nat

> xfrm_algo
> xfrm_user
> xt_addrtype
> xt_conntrack
> xt_limit
> xt_LOG
> xt_MASQUERADE
> xt_state
> xt_tcpudp

I suppose something changed after kernel 5.17 (kernel 5.19 also doesn't
boot) and is incompatible with something. Not sure what.

Anything I can do to make the kernel (or maybe it's even grub ?) print
out whatever it's doing before crashing ?

Title:
  Upgrade from 22.04 to 22.10 won't boot

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
I was actually meaning to upgrade to 23.04, but the updater offered to
upgrade to 22.10 first, so I supposed this was needed.

After a standard upgrade with the UI, even the recovery boot never
passes the "Loading initial ramdisk ..." line -- it silently freezes.

I have removed the "quiet splash" options in grub by "dis_ucode_ldr",
following some random article. Anyway, nothing is displayed after
  "Loading initial ramdisk ..." line.

I have the following kernel installed:

  5.19.0-42-generic
  5.17.5-051705-generic
  5.15.36-051536-generic
  5.15.0-27-generic (*)
  5.13.0-19-generic
  Plus a dual-boot windows.

Just the 5.15.0-27-generic boots, but it doesn't mount ethernet for
some reason. My motherboard uses Realtek 8125, and it used to work
just fine 10 minutes ago (in 22.04), but now I'm not able to install
`r8125-dkms` module, because I dont' have the linux-headers version
installed for that kernel ... I'm also not able to find it to
  download.

I also have an old 2080ti NVidia card, in case that has any effect on
  this.

  Any suggestions ?

  Thanks

Kernel BUG (null ptr dereference) with linux-image-5.19.0-42-generic

Status in linux-signed-hwe-5.19 package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
I use Ubuntu 22.04 in VMWare Player 17.0.2 (Windows host, due to
corporate IT...). I installed the HWE kernel since I have an Intel CPU
with P/E-cores. 3D acceleration is enabled in VMWare.

With linux-image-5.19.0-41-generic it is rock solid. With linux-
image-5.19.0-42-generic it invariably crashes after anything between a
  minute and an hour.

In the journalctl after rebooting it showed that X.Org had crashed
followed by a Kernel BUG/Oops due to NULL pointer dereference in
drm_gem_object_release_handle. A journalctl log from the Xorg crash up
until the kernel OOPS has been attached to this case.

This issue happened twice with this kernel. In addition, after trying
to reproduce it with kdump tools installed, I got a different issue:
refcount_t: saturated; leaking memory. in the log, leading to the OOM
killing everything on the system, including (based on what was printed
on the terminal), systemd-udevd and journald. That OOM killing never
made it into the journal however, as can be expected. I have attached
what I could get from the journal for this case as well.

One thing that helped trigger this bug (but not every time) was
launching Firefox, but once it didn't crash from that and only crashed
  much much later.

Unfortunately I could not get ubuntu-bug to work for this case. I
tried "ubuntu-bug --package linux-image-5.19.0-42-generic" but it did
absolutely nothing. I'm happy to provide any additional information
  you require however.

  -kindly ASK

HOW can FORCE the uvcdriver.c to match mi kernel version ?
Have I got OTHER ways to make the kernel module I’m compiling, match my
running system ?

I would like to test the module so to confirm the patch and let it
  enter the kernel main stream...

  PS
btw…. to allow Eclipse to compile the kernel, I had to pass this commands
  scripts/config --disable CONFIG_SYSTEM_REVOCATION_KEYS
  scripts/config --disable SYSTEM_REVOCATION_KEYS
  scripts/config --disable SYSTEM_TRUSTED_KEYS

hope that this does not affect the module layout & checking

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 2020757] [NEW] Kernel BUG (null ptr dereference) with linux-image-5.19.0-42-generic (HWE kernel on 22.04)

2023-05-25 Thread Arvid Norlander
Public bug reported:

In addition, after trying to
reproduce it with kdump tools installed, I got a different issue:
refcount_t: saturated; leaking memory. in the log, leading to the OOM
killing everything on the system, including (based on what was printed
on the terminal), systemd-udevd and journald.

I tried
"ubuntu-bug --package linux-image-5.19.0-42-generic" but it did
absolutely nothing. I'm happy to provide any additional information you
require however.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 2020656] Re: system freeze (cpu fan goes high)

2023-05-25 Thread __JEAN_FRANCOIS__
Digging the Internet I reached some posts/bugs that talked about a
problem with some amd cpu that hard time getting out of C6 power state.

So I applied one of the suggested workaround that is: prevent cpu to
enter C6 state so it won't have problem to exit ^^

For this purpose is used cpupower, more precisely I used this command:
cpupower idle-set --disable-by-latency 350

before I ran this command, cpupower moniter résulted in:
| Mperf  || Idle_Stats
 CPU| C0   | Cx   | Freq  || POLL | C1   | C2   | C3
   0|  0,07| 99,93|  1429||  0,00|  0,00| 0,00|  99,86
nearly the same for other cores

I guess it means that all cores can sleep down as much as possible…

after the command, cpupower moniter résulted in:
| Mperf  || Idle_Stats
 CPU| C0   | Cx   | Freq  || POLL | C1   | C2   | C3
   0|  0,07| 99,93|  1429||  0,00|  0,00| 99,91|  0,00
nearly the same for other cores

It seems cores can't sleep as much as before.

I've not really understood what the C6 state is and what the mapping with those
Cx shown by cpupower is (max for cpupower is C4).
So far, cpupower idle-set --disable-by-latency 350 seems to do a good job
preventing the cpu to go to far in sleeping state.

Nearly one full day without a freeze makes my computer usable.

Some questions please:
- any help to understand the C6/Cx mapping?
- is it a software problem (bug in the kernel like I'm guessing and I can hope
for a fix) or a hardware problem and I should send the computer back to the
manufacturer?
- I'm on laptop, how to evaluate the impact on the battery usage?

Many thanks

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 2020656] Re: system freeze (cpu fan goes high)

2023-05-25 Thread __JEAN_FRANCOIS__
Sadly I managed to freeze it again.
I was testing some ssh parameters,
just did ssh -C -X onto the machine then launched a vscode and moved the mouse
quickly over the folder list.
No "watchdog: BUG: soft lockup" seen in journalctl

A reddit post mentions that with a lenove T14s (very similar to my P14s)
disabling Wayland did the trick.
I'm gonna try this.

Bug description:
  [Impact]
  Copied from the commit message:
Usage of `set -e` before executing a command causes immediate exit
on failure, without cleanup up the resources allocated at setup.
This can affect the next tests that use the same resources,
leading to a chain of failures.

A simple fix is to always call cleanup function when the script exists.
This approach is already used by other existing tests.

  [Fix]
  * b60417a9f2 selftest: fib_tests: Always cleanup before exit

This patch can be cherry-picked into affected kernels.

  [Test]
Run the patched fib_tests.sh on KVM kernels, which is expected to fail
  due to bug 2007458.
Check with `ip netns`, the ns1 added during setup() should be removed.

  [Where problems could occur]
Test robustness improvement, this should not break things.

  [Impact]

Debian source package diffs cannot represent that a file should
  be executable.
gen-auto-reconstruct detects when a commit adds a script that is supposed to
be invoked during the build and restores the execute permissions in the
reconstruct script by adding `chmod +x $file`.

But, if a file removes its execute permission, this will change it back.
This happened in the last jammy release (version 5.15.0-70.77) where a commit
from upstream
removed the execute permission for a header file but then our scripts brought
it back.

  [Fix]
  Andy proposed the following fix
  https://dpaste.com/6SJ8YR3BM
Basically it checks if the permission was added or removed and uses either +x
or -x.

  [Test plan]
Easily tested with jammy-kvm, latest release where a rebase picked this commit
"treewide: fix up files incorrectly marked executable" where
`drivers/gpu/drm/vmwgfx/vmwgfx_msg_arm64.h` changed its permission from 755 to
644 (removed execute).
When debian packages are prepared, you'll notice the file has changed its
permission back to 755.
With the fix, it should be the same.

  [Regression potential]
Low, it is a small fix. Scripts will still have execute permission.

  [Fix]

   * For Kinetic and Jammy cherrypick of
 89aba4c26fae 89aba4c26fae4e459f755a18912845c348ee48f3
"s390/uaccess: add missing earlyclobber annotations to __clear_user()"

 https://launchpadlibrarian.net/659551648/s390-uaccess.patch

  [ Test Plan ]

   * A test program in C is needed and used for testing.

   * The test will be done by IBM.

[ Where problems could occur ]

   * The modification is limited to function 'long __clear_user'.

   * And there, just to one inline assembly constraints line.

   * This is usually difficult to trace.

   * A erroneous modification may lead to a wrong behavior in
     'long __clear_user',

   * and maybe returning a wrong size (in uaccess.c).

  [ Other Info ]

   * This affects all Ubuntu releases in service, down to 18.04.

   * Since we are close to 23.04 kernel freeze, I submit a patch request for
23.04 separately, and submit the SRU request for the all other
     Ubuntu releases later.

Bug description:
  [Impact]
For amdgpu/i915, hdmi audio output device has disappeared.

  [Fix]
The latest fix for the non-contiguous memalloc helper changed the
allocation method for a non-IOMMU system to use only the fallback
allocator. This should have worked, but it caused a problem sometimes
when too many non-contiguous pages are allocated that can't be treated
  by HD-audio controller.

As a quirk workaround, go back to the original strategy: use
dma_alloc_noncontiguous() at first, and apply the fallback only when
it fails, but only for non-IOMMU case

  [Test Case]
  1. boot with kernel applied the patches.
  2. check the cards in /proc/asound/cards.
 Get the hdmi cards.

   0 [PCH ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel PCH
HDA Intel PCH at 0xe232 irq 137
   1 [HDMI ]: HDA-Intel - HDA ATI HDMI
HDA ATI HDMI at 0xe226 irq 134

  [Where problems could occur]
Low, this is just workaround and may have a better solution in the future.

CLARIFICATION: Just to avoid any confusion for those coming to this bug
report; the "Jammy: invalid" status above does *not* mean that this bug doesn't
affect jammy -- it does, and the kernel team is aware of this. All it reflects
is that the fix has to go into the kinetic kernel package which will then flow
into the kernel-hwe package implicitly.

  Currently known affected cards:

  * HD 7700 (comment 8)
  * R9 290 (comment 21)
  * RX 550 (LP: #2012141, and comment 27)
  * RX 570 (mine)
  * RX 580 (LP: #2009276, and comment 28)
  * WX 3200 (comment 29)
  * RX 6600 (LP: #2009542)
  * RX 6700 (LP: #2009275)

  [ Original Description ]

After upgrading my Ubuntu jammy (22.04) desktop to the -35 release of
the kernel, I found my HDMI audio output device had disappeared.
Reverting to the -32 release caused it to appear again (hence why I'm
filing the bug against the kernel rather than pulseaudio). I'm
attaching the dmesg output from immediately after booting each kernel,
but after a bit of trimming and diffing I *think* the following lines
  are the salient ones:

input: HDA ATI HDMI HDMI/DP,pcm=3 as
/devices/pci:00/:00:03.1/:2b:00.1/sound/card0/input12
input: HDA ATI HDMI HDMI/DP,pcm=7 as
/devices/pci:00/:00:03.1/:2b:00.1/sound/card0/input13
input: HDA ATI HDMI HDMI/DP,pcm=8 as
/devices/pci:00/:00:03.1/:2b:00.1/sound/card0/input14
input: HDA ATI HDMI HDMI/DP,pcm=9 as
/devices/pci:00/:00:03.1/:2b:00.1/sound/card0/input15
input: HDA ATI HDMI HDMI/DP,pcm=10 as
/devices/pci:00/:00:03.1/:2b:00.1/sound/card0/input16
input: HDA ATI HDMI HDMI/DP,pcm=11 as
/devices/pci:00/:00:03.1/:2b:00.1/sound/card0/input17
  snd_hda_intel :2b:00.1: bound :2b:00.0 (ops
amdgpu_dm_audio_component_bind_ops [amdgpu])

These lines appear in the dmesg of the -32 kernel, but not in the -35
kernel's log. Meanwhile, the following lines appear in the -35
kernel's log but not in the -32:

hdaudio hdaudioC0D0: no AFG or MFG node found
  snd_hda_intel :2b:00.1: no codecs initialized

I'll also attach the output of "pactl list" under each kernel (this
shows the HDMI audio sink showing up under -32, but not -35) just in
case that helps shed any light on things.

Bug description:
  [SRU Justification]

  == Impact ==
This subtest checks for bashisms in the test scripts of ftracetests. A recent
stable change added such a case. This is harmless but causes the Meta-selftests
to fail. The offending commit is "selftests/ftrace: event_triggers: wait longer
for test_event_enable" which adds:
  +   if [ "$e" == $val ]; then

  == Fix ==
  Replace the test with
  + if [ "$e" = $val ]; then

  == Testcase ==
Running the kernel selftests/ftracetest (done in ADT and RT) should no longer
show "Meta-selftests" as FAILed.

  == Regression Potential ==
This affects only the selftest suite and only ftrace subtests. Any change
would only be observable there.

Status in linux source package in Kinetic:

Status in linux source package in Lunar:

Bug description:
  [Impact]
* Intel E810-family NICs cause system hangs when booting with bonding
enabled
* This happens due to the driver unplugging auxiliary devices
* The unplug event happens under RTNL lock context, which causes a deadlock
where the RDMA driver waits for the RNL lock to complete removal

  [Test Plan]
* Users have reported that after setting up bonding on switch and server
side, the system will hang when starting network services

  [Fix]
* The upstream patch defers unplugging/re-plugging of the auxiliary device,
so that it's not performed under the RTNL lock context.
* Fix was introduced by commit:
248401cb2c46 ice: avoid bonding causing auxiliary plug/unplug under
RTNL lock

  [Regression Potential]
* Regressions would manifest in devices that support RDMA functionality and
have been added to a bond
* We should look out for auxiliary devices that haven't been properly
unplugged, or that cause further issues with
  ice_plug_aux_dev()/ice_unplug_aux_dev()

  [Original Description]
  jammy 22.04.1
  linux-image-generic 5.15.0-58-generic
Intel E810-XXV Dual Port NICs in Dell PowerEdge 650

  - 5.15 in jammy -> reproducible
  - 5.19 in hwe-edge -> reproducible
  - 6.2.rc6 in the mainline build -> works
  - Intel's ice driver 1.10.1.2.2 -> works

After beonding is enabled on switch and server side, the system will
hang at initialing ubuntu. The kernel loads but around starting the
Network Services the system can hang for sometimes 5 minutes, and in
  other cases, indefinitely.

  The message of:

  echo 0 > /proc/sys/kernel/hung_task_timeout_sec”  systemd-resolve
blocked for more than 120 seconds

appears, and eventually the Network services just attempts to start
and never does. This is with or without DHCP enabled.

Tried this same setup with the hwe-22.04, hwe-20.04, hwe-22.04-ege and
linux-oem kernels and all exhibit the same failure.

To work around this. installing the Intel 'ice' driver of version
1.10.1.2.2 works. The system doesn't even remotely hang at startup
and all networking functions remain working (ping, DNS, general
  accessibility).

The driver can be found at
https://downloadmirror.intel.com/763930/ice-1.10.1.2.2.tar.gz

On s390x LPAR instances, this test will fail with:
  # File "linux/tools/testing/selftests/net/devlink_port_split.py", line
64, in get_if_names
  # if ports[port]['flavour'] == 'physical':
  # KeyError: 'flavour'
not ok 1 selftests: net: devlink_port_split.py # exit=1

This is because the mlx4 driver in use on this instance does not set
attributes, therefore `devlink -j port show` command output does not
  contain this "flavour" key.

  [Fix]
  * 3de66d08d3 selftests: net: devlink_port_split.py: skip test if no
suitable device available

This patch can be cherry-picked into our J/K/L kernels.

  [Test]
Run the patched devlink_port_split.py on s390x LPAR, and it won't
fail with # KeyError: 'flavour' but marked as SKIP instead.

  [Where problems could occur]
If this change is incorrect, it may affect the test result, however it's
limited to testing tools, no actual impact to kernel functions.

Instead of disabling acpi support completely with nvidia-dkms-390, we
should try instead to see if it's possible to support it somehow.

  [Fix]

This patch looks promising (even if it says huge hack in the comments...):

https://gitlab.com/herecura/packages/nvidia-390xx-dkms/-/blob/780a3c8b159f24c14e6c1cb35fd747338aefea39/kernel-6.2.patch

Apply this patch and drop any 6.0 and 6.2 related patches.

  [Regression potential]

With this patch nvidia-dkms-390 should build against 6.2 kernels
without disabling any feature, but users of this driver may experience
kernel bugs / crashes. However, the nvidia 390 driver is unmaintained
so we should start to consider phasing it out.

Bug description:
  [Impact]

Instead of disabling acpi support completely with nvidia-dkms-390, we
should try instead to see if it's possible to support it somehow.

  [Fix]

This patch looks promising (even if it says huge hack in the comments...):

https://gitlab.com/herecura/packages/nvidia-390xx-dkms/-/blob/780a3c8b159f24c14e6c1cb35fd747338aefea39/kernel-6.2.patch

Apply this patch and drop any 6.0 and 6.2 related patches.

  [Regression potential]

With this patch nvidia-dkms-390 should build against 6.2 kernels
without disabling any feature, but users of this driver may experience
kernel bugs / crashes. However, the nvidia 390 driver is unmaintained
so we should start to consider phasing it out.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 2020783] [NEW] Lunar update: v6.3.4 upstream stable release

Public bug reported:

SRU Justification

Impact:

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 2015972] Re: Dell: Enable speaker mute hotkey LED indicator

2023-05-25 Thread Andreas Hasenack
Thank you, so we have verification on the oem kernels, and the proposed
kernels, for jammy, kinetic, and lunar.

Did you try alsa-ucm-conf with the currently released kernels for those
ubuntu releases? I wouldn't expect the LED to work, if it requires a
newer kernel, but just to check if nothing breaks with the currently
released kernels and this new alsa-ucm-conf package.

My console commands report similar info to other users:

https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/723504/integrated-camera-not-detected-working-on-acer-nitro-5-an515-58

  PROPOSED SOLUTION
I got in contact with laurent.pinch...@ideasonboard.com and with
riba...@chromium.org , and subscribed to https://www.linuxtv.org/lists. And
me...@vger.kernel.org mailinglist.

Laurent proposed me a fix and I modified the 5,15 uvc_driver.c
version, and loaded it on github

  https://github.com/Giuliano69/uvc_driver-for-Quanta-HD-User-
  Facing-0x0408-0x4035-/blob/main/uvc_driver.c

I offered to test the fix, so I tried to compile the module with the
  new source.

  COMPILING PROBLEMS
I’m running **Ubuntu 22.04.1 LTS, with kernel
  giuliano@Astra2A:/usr/src$ cat /proc/version_signature
  Ubuntu 5.15.0-56.62-generic 5.15.64

BUT the linux-source that I found installed seems to be different
  tgiuliano@Astra2A:/usr/src$ ls -al linux-so*
  lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 47 nov 22 16:08 linux-source-5.15.0.tar.bz2 ->
linux-source-5.15.0/linux-source-5.15.0.tar.bz2

I expanded the tar file, configured the IDE and compiled without error any
errors…
I manually copied the uvcvideo.ko in
  /lib/modules/5.15.0-56-
  sudo cp…...

then tryed to intall the new uvcvideo.ko module
sudo rmmod uvcvideo && sudo modprobe uvcvideo

  BUT… IT FAILS
giuliano@Astra2A:~$ sudo rmmod uvcvideo && sudo modprobe uvcvideo
modprobe: ERROR: could not insert 'uvcvideo': Exec format error

  and dmesg shows
[25961.151982] usbcore: registered new interface driver uvcvideo
[26323.125534] usbcore: deregistering interface driver uvcvideo

These are the TWO modinfo from the old and new uvcvideo modules
  https://pastebin.com/tSj8Exm6
  Basically
OLD module: vermagic: 5.15.0-56-generic SMP mod_unload modversions
NEW module: vermagic: 5.15.64 SMP mod_unload modversions

  -kindly ASK

HOW can FORCE the uvcdriver.c to match mi kernel version ?
Have I got OTHER ways to make the kernel module I’m compiling, match my
running system ?

I would like to test the module so to confirm the patch and let it
  enter the kernel main stream...

  BR
  Giuliano

  PS
btw…. to allow Eclipse to compile the kernel, I had to pass this commands
  scripts/config --disable CONFIG_SYSTEM_REVOCATION_KEYS
  scripts/config --disable SYSTEM_REVOCATION_KEYS
  scripts/config --disable SYSTEM_TRUSTED_KEYS

hope that this does not affect the module layout & checking

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 2020413] Re: fix typo in config-checks invocation

2023-05-25 Thread Andrei Gherzan
Because this was not included in the 20230515 cycle for Jammy, any
derivative of it using the old configs+annotations model will hit a
build failure and will need to cherry-pick the fix from jammy:linux:

Status in linux source package in Jammy:

  [Impact]

After migrating to the new annotations-only model in jammy we
introduced a typo in debian/rules.d/4-checks.mk, that is triggered if
we opt to not migrate to the new model and still use the old
  configs+annotations.

  [Test case]

  With debian./config/config.common.ubuntu present run the
  following command:

   $ fakeroot debian/rules clean updateconfigs

  [Fix]

  Replace @perl -> perl.

  [Regression potential]

It's a trivial typo fix. Regressions can be introduced only if we are
still using the old configs+annotations model.

Status in Linux:

Bug description:
Regression with Ryzen 3 2200G, UEFI Asrock B450 Pro4 motherboard and
  55-75 Hz monitor.

Booting Xubuntu 19.10 live iso with safe graphics options did give a
  stable desktop display, but

  xubuntu@xubuntu:~$ xrandr
xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default
  Screen 0: minimum 1920 x 1080, current 1920 x 1080, maximum 1920 x 1080
  default connected 1920x1080+0+0 0mm x 0mm
 1920x1080 77.00*
  xubuntu@xubuntu:~$

The monitor is only supposed to have a maximum vertical refresh rate
of 75 Hz. Xrandr reports 77 Hz as the only choice. The monitor
reports 60 Hz, not that I trust the monitor.

Swapping monitors and running many reboots the situation seems to
  be...

Old versions of Ubuntu (Bionic and Dingo) can handle the hardware.
Standard boot sometimes gives a blank screen.
Standard boot sometimes gives a badly pixelated display
  (Ctl-Alt-F6, Ctl-Alt-F7 temporarily improves it).
Connecting a 144 Hz monitor convinces something (the firmware?)
that fast refreshes are OK on a slow monitor, or at least it fails to
reread and abide by the slow monitor's limitations when swapping back.
Something, I don't know what, convinces the computer to run the display
  at 60 Hz, sometimes.

The motherboard has three video ports; DP, HDMI and VGA (using an onboard
DP? to VGA converter chip). The fast monitor has DP, HDMI and VGA ports,
but I only experimented with the DP connection. The slow monitor has VGA and
DVI-D ports. I experimented with VGA to VGA and HDMI via a passive adapter
to DVI. When running in the badly pixelated mode xorg seems to think that
  the VGA port is "DP-1".

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 2020794] [NEW] Black screen doesn't wake up in wayland with Nvidia

2023-05-25 Thread Soumyadeep Ghosh
Public bug reported:

In the wayland session, if the deviced gets the screen black for once,
it doesn't comeup. And I have bring it up either via pressing the
physical suspend button(which also sometimes doesn't work), or via
forcefully restarting it down.

The package I've reported the bug with is a randomly chosen nvidia
package. I don't know what's the real reason. But. before this I used a
custom kernel in Ubuntu 22.10, this issue happened very less frequently
there.

Bug description:

Instead of disabling acpi support completely with nvidia-dkms-390, we
should try instead to see if it's possible to support it somehow.

  [Fix]

This patch looks promising (even if it says huge hack in the comments...):

https://gitlab.com/herecura/packages/nvidia-390xx-dkms/-/blob/780a3c8b159f24c14e6c1cb35fd747338aefea39/kernel-6.2.patch

Apply this patch and drop any 6.0 and 6.2 related patches.

  [Regression potential]

With this patch nvidia-dkms-390 should build against 6.2 kernels
without disabling any feature, but users of this driver may experience
kernel bugs / crashes. However, the nvidia 390 driver is unmaintained
so we should start to consider phasing it out.

The current version of zfs-dkms available in lunar fails to build with

  [Test case]

  $ apt install zfs-dkms

  [Fix]

Resync with zfs version in Debian (2.1.1) and apply the usual Ubuntu
  specific changes.

  [Regression potential]

We may experience zfs regressions due to a new major version,
especially on zfs volumes / filesystems created with the previous
versions. However this goes in pair with the new major kernel version
and we need to upgrade the version of zfs to properly support the new
  kernels >= 6.3.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 2017449] Re: Unsafe to upgrade ZFS Boot Ubuntu from Kinetic to Lunar

2023-05-25 Thread Dave G
As stated above, Ubuntu on ZFS failed to boot after an earlier version
upgrade.

The Jonathon F PPA
(https://launchpad.net/~jonathonf/+archive/ubuntu/zfs) resolved this
problem.

If Ubuntu patches zfs to be compatible, why does this PPA exist?

Title:
Unsafe to upgrade ZFS Boot Ubuntu from Kinetic to Lunar

Status in zfs-linux package in Ubuntu:
  Opinion

Bug description:
Need to know if it is safe to upgrade from Ubuntu 22.10/Kinetic to
23.04/Lunar on systems that have been installed onto the ZFS
filesystem via the Ubuntu 22.10 GUI installer and selecting the ZFS
  filesystem option.

The reason I ask is I was burned by this in the last upgrade cycle.
Upgrading 21.10 to 22.03 resulted in an unbootable system with no
warning, no easy recourse, very few recovery options because Ubuntu
22.03 did not ship with proper ZFS kernel support. It was very bad
and I lost a week of income from the downtime.

It looks like the same situation exists here. Ubuntu 23.04/Lunar
ships with Kernel 6.2 but ZFS didn't release Kernel 6.2 support until
very recently and from what I can tell (??) the updated ZFS packages
did not make it into the Lunar installer.

The last time I resolved the issue by using Jonathon F's ZFS support
  PPA (here https://launchpad.net/~jonathonf/+archive/ubuntu/zfs) but it
looks like he no longer supports it. I've tried to contact him
several times over the last week but get no response.

Will the upgraded system be bootable?

What is the recommended path to get onto Lunar? I have been waiting
for 23.04 to resolve various issues with my MSI Z690 motherboard, etc.

If this is actually an issue I recommend urgently resolving it so that
others who selected ZFS are not stranded at an emergency prompt with
no guidance on how to handle the problem.

Title:
kernel 5.19.0-35 clobbers Creative S/B AE-7 Sound Card

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in linux-hwe-5.19 package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  2023-03-03
Attempted install of kernel 5.19.0-35 using the Linux Mint package installer
LM 21.1 Vera, release 21.1).
  Clobbered my Sound Blaster AE-7.
Could not even locate the device using Sound manager utility on Linux Mint
Panel (the enumerated device showed up as the embedded sound chip on the mobo
which I had previously disabled in the UEFI setup).
Uninstalled kernel and reverted back to 5.19.0-32 using Timeshift restore
feature which worked fine before the update to 5.19.0-35.
Tried again to install 5.19.0-35 the same way, just to be sure.
The SB AE-7 got clobbered again.
So restored back to 5.19.0-32 generic one more time, using Timeshift. SB AE-7
works fine now with this lower version kernel.
  Current hardware config:

  Asus Prime Z790-P wifi mobo.
Intel Core i3-13100 processor (with Intel UHD 730 graphics).
  Corsair Vengeance DDR5 32gb (2x16) ram, 5200Mhz.
  3 x Nvme SSD.
Boot drive is Western Digital Black SN770 500gb.
Asus Nvidia RTX-3050 PCIe graphics card.
Creative Labs Sound Blaster AE-7 audio card (PCIe).
On-board audio chip (Realtek 7.1 Surround Sound High Definition Audio) is
disabled in UEFI.
  UEFI is AMI/BIOS, revision 0812.
Linux Mint 21.1 is running on barebones hardware, no VM involved.
No other O/S's are installed on the machine.

Running sudo lspci -vnvn > lspci-vnvn.log
  gave the following error message...

Hi Frederic,
thank you for sharing your approach and script.
It helped me to solve a problem with my ALC3234 (Dell Optiplex 3040 Micro). The
analog output format was limited to 44.1kHz/48kHz after direct linux boot. With
a previous Windows boot, additional 96kHz/192kHz are available.

I will attach the adapted script, that works for me. May be it helps someone.

I offered to test the fix, so I tried to compile the module with the
  new source.

  COMPILING PROBLEMS
I’m running **Ubuntu 22.04.1 LTS, with kernel
  giuliano@Astra2A:/usr/src$ cat /proc/version_signature
  Ubuntu 5.15.0-56.62-generic 5.15.64

BUT the linux-source that I found installed seems to be different
  tgiuliano@Astra2A:/usr/src$ ls -al linux-so*
  lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 47 nov 22 16:08 linux-source-5.15.0.tar.bz2 ->
linux-source-5.15.0/linux-source-5.15.0.tar.bz2

I expanded the tar file, configured the IDE and compiled without error any
errors…
I manually copied the uvcvideo.ko in
  /lib/modules/5.15.0-56-
  sudo cp…...

then tryed to intall the new uvcvideo.ko module
sudo rmmod uvcvideo && sudo modprobe uvcvideo

  BUT… IT FAILS
giuliano@Astra2A:~$ sudo rmmod uvcvideo && sudo modprobe uvcvideo
modprobe: ERROR: could not insert 'uvcvideo': Exec format error

  and dmesg shows
[25961.151982] usbcore: registered new interface driver uvcvideo
[26323.125534] usbcore: deregistering interface driver uvcvideo
[26323.189294] uvcvideo: disagrees about version of symbol module_layout

These are the TWO modinfo from the old and new uvcvideo modules
  https://pastebin.com/tSj8Exm6
  Basically
OLD module: vermagic: 5.15.0-56-generic SMP mod_unload modversions
NEW module: vermagic: 5.15.64 SMP mod_unload modversions

  -kindly ASK

HOW can FORCE the uvcdriver.c to match mi kernel version ?
Have I got OTHER ways to make the kernel module I’m compiling, match my
running system ?

I would like to test the module so to confirm the patch and let it
  enter the kernel main stream...

  BR
  Giuliano

  PS
btw…. to allow Eclipse to compile the kernel, I had to pass this commands
  scripts/config --disable CONFIG_SYSTEM_REVOCATION_KEYS
  scripts/config --disable SYSTEM_REVOCATION_KEYS
  scripts/config --disable SYSTEM_TRUSTED_KEYS

hope that this does not affect the module layout & checking

2023-05-25 Thread Giuliano Lotta
@raj
As you are using kernel version 6.x, consider using solution at #45 fron
@BlindBo
My kernel version is 5.x

follow @blindBo instructions at #45
Also change camera to 4033 model in the source of uvc_driver.c.

Let us know if it work.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 2020757] Re: Kernel BUG (null ptr dereference) with linux-image-5.19.0-42-generic (HWE kernel on 22.04)

The same issue with VirtualBox running on Windows (stupid corporate
requirements).

Title:
Kernel BUG (null ptr dereference) with linux-image-5.19.0-42-generic
  (HWE kernel on 22.04)

Status in linux-signed-hwe-5.19 package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
