When resuming, observe that there is no bluetooth icon in the tray. 3) Upgrade to the proposed package 4) If the bluetooth icon isn't in the tray to start (depending on if the bluetooth service got restarted during the package upgrade) run $ sudo hid2hci --tohci to get it in the right state. 5) Attempt to suspend to RAM. When resuming, observe that there is now a bluetooth icon still in the tray. --Regression Potential-- None. This rule is only used on Dell BT adapters, and the existing rule does not work w/ the udev in Jaunty. I tested to copy the photos from Microsoft Windows to see if it was a hardware problem and concluded that my SD media card reader was OK because this problem doesn't happen in Windows, only in Linux Ubuntu. In case it's relevant, I have a custom grub setup - the main /dev/sda grub installation boots to a grub menu on the /home partition which lets me select the operating system I want to boot from. I can choose from two partitions (one has Intrepid and the other Jaunty), and this then forwards to the grub installation for that partition (so Jaunty has its grub installed on the main jaunty / partition under /boot grub). When rebooting after hibernate (from Jaunty) I chose the Jaunty grub entry, which then let me select the current kernel. After that I got this hibernate resume failure report (it didn't resume the hibernated image, just apparently booted normally). This could be a duplicate of https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/352675 but I thought I'd submit it to gather all the information in the report. The Studio XPS 13 had a similar problem, but legacy code was added to the BIOS to adjust the behavior of suspend-to-ram when operating on Ubuntu that would still be compatible with vista instead. Likely ODMs and OEMs will be more commonly using this method for suspending. Here's some notes from the ODM: - Psudo code as below Vista driver : Reset kbc : Wirte FFh command to 60h port //reset command (keyboard) EC return : FAh, AAh Reset touchpad : Wirte FFh command to 60h port //Reset command (PS2 Mouse / touchpad) Wirte D4h command to 64h port//Write to Auxiliary Device EC return : FAh, AAh, 00h Ubuntu driver : Reset kbc : Wirte FFh command to 60h port //reset command (keyboard) EC return : FAh, AAh Reset touchpad : Wirte D4h command to 64h port//Write to Auxiliary Device EC return : FAh, AAh, 00h (Ubuntu resets kbc and touchpad at the same time so that only commands EC FFh to 60h port once, but EC do the kbc reset and ps2 reset individually) - Ideally the behavior should be modified to match the Vista behavior and increase compatibility with machines that normally solely ship with Vista. Please do not use it as such (even though it has been used as such already). You can scan through the bug for links to the Ubuntu forums where many, many different questions have been asked, answered, and re- answered. The temporary workaround is just below. See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PowerManagement for an overview about what is involved and for a remedy. SRU justification: current behavior may lead to premature disk failure in laptops due to excessive unnecessary drive parking. Fix will disable disk cycling by default when on AC power, by correcting an error in the hdparm logic of acpi-support. For jaunty, this issue is addressed in acpi-support 0.115. TEST CASE: 1. With acpi-support 0.109 (hardy) or 0.114 (intrepid) installed and laptop-mode *not* enabled in either /etc/default/laptop-mode or /etc/default/acpi-support, monitor the load cycle count of your hard drive by running 'sudo smartctl -a /dev/sda|grep Load_Cycle_Count' over an interval of several minutes, and observe that it is incrementing. (If it does not increment, your hard drive's manufacturer defaults are sane and you are not affected by this problem.) 2. install acpi-support from hardy-proposed or intrepid-proposed 3. while connected to AC power, monitor 'sudo smartctl -a /dev/sda|grep Load_Cycle_Count' again to confirm that the number is no longer incrementing 4. (assuming that the system is a laptop:) disconnect the system from AC power, and confirm that the number is incrementing again 5. enable laptop mode by setting ENABLE_LAPTOP_MODE=true in /etc/default/laptop-mode and running 'sudo /etc/init.d/laptop-mode restart' 6. reconnect the system to AC power and confirm that the Load_Cycle_Count stops incrementing. 7. suspend and resume the system and confirm that the Load_Cycle_Count is still not incrementing. REGRESSION POTENTIAL: As this patch causes hdparm -B 128 and hdparm -B 254 to be invoked automatically on systems where it was not being run before, there is some risk that this change will have a measurable impact on the disk throughput, power consumption, and temperature of some hard drives. Nevertheless, it is believed that these APM power settings are the sensible default settings for the vast majority of hard drives and that the current behavior poses a significant risk to the longevity of hard drives used in a wide range of laptop models, so this update should only be blocked if it results in confirmed hardware damage that can be expected to apply to a similar range of configurations. Following is a summary of the issue: It is confirmed that some systems are seeing an unusually high number of load/unload cycles on their hard disks, as evidenced by smartctl. It was originally surmised that this was related to laptop-mode being enabled, but this especially affects systems where laptop-mode is disabled. In fact, aggressive APM is not a bad idea while a system is not on AC, as that system is much more likely to encounter a physical impact. This is due to disk APM settings that let the heads park or disk spin down after an idle period that is shorter than

[Impact] Affects users owning hardware with certain LVDS displays produced by AUO, such as used in the Dell Studio 15 and Studio 1535; reportedly some Sony systems may be fixed by this as well. These are currently shipping models from Dell; they had been shipped with Ubuntu pre-installed, making this a particularly severe problem. [Development Branch] Same patch is deployed to Jaunty in version 2.5.1-1ubuntu9 This patch is a correction to a long standing bug where the -intel driver generates slightly incorrect modelines. Most systems tolerate the slight error, but others (like the ones affected by this bug) don't. [Patch] From upstream - https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=18342 Identical patch used in Intrepid and Jaunty [Test Case] Boot LiveCD on hardware with affected LVDS; will result in white screen following usplash. [Regression Potential] This changes the modeline calculations in general (i.e. it is not a hardware-specific quirk). Regression could occur under two theoretical circumstances: 1. Logic error. If the patch is mis-coded, it could cause all modelines to be miscalculated. This is not felt to be very likely, especially since the patch is very simple. However if it does happen, it will be exceedingly obvious... 2. Uncovering secondary bugs. It is entirely possible (but perhaps extraordinarily unlikely) that some hardware has slightly buggy timing dependencies the other way round, and are dependent on the buggy timing calculations, and could exhibit problems once the issue is fixed. However the risk of this is probably vanishingly small, and if it does happen will probably affect only a few systems, and the fix ought to be fairly straightforward. In both the above cases, ample testing will mitigate the risk levels. [lspci] 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:2a02] (rev 03) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller]) Subsystem: Dell Unknown device [1028:0254] [Original Report] I purchased a Dell Studio 15 with Ubuntu pre-installed. The graphics adapter is an Intel x3100 The LCD is 1280x800. I suspect that the LCD is not compatible with the current version of the Linux driver. Out of the box, the loading screens appear just fine. Once the X server loads, the screen goes mostly white, with some scattered lines, each about 1 pixel wide. I then booted to recovery mode and selected the option for the system to attempt to fix X on its own. This resulted in a White Screen of Death as well. Any attempt to use the Intel driver results in a White Screen of Death. Vesa will not recognize a 1280x800 resolution and only gives 800x600 upon initial installation. After installing KDE the screen results in 1024x768 but still will not work in 1280x800, even though those resolutions are listed in the Modelines in xorg.conf. Bug is present in Ubuntu 8.04 and 8.10, if not more. The worst part is that even the replacement Dell Studio 15 has this same problem. I suspect that Dell is knowingly selling a model of laptop that is supposedly approved hardware that they never got to work in the first place. Actual results: Blank screen Expected results: Working Jaunty. Work-around: Select option ACPI=off We know from other bug reports for example, http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=515975 that there is a problem with HPET. That debian bug requests incorporation of a one-line kernel change that changes an oops message from displaying on every clock tick to one that only appears once. It does not, however get HPET working. This problem manifests under Intrepid with much spewage of kernel oops messages and/or terribly slow operation. Again the work-around of of turning off ACPI seems to help. The hardware has ICH10 motherboard chips. How new are they? Also I see a report that the PNP-BIOS is not working, but I do not know if this is relevant. The monitor will not be listed. Regression Potential: Near zero. This merely adds some new entries to MonitorsDB, which is only used if the user configures using either BulletproofX or Screens and Graphics (in many cases, Ubuntu's defaults and xorg autodetection will just work). This is due to disk APM settings that let the heads park or disk spin down after an idle period that is shorter than the regular disk access

If you want, please add yourself as a subscriber, and click on link to indicate that This bug effects me, too In the meantime, there are two xD readers known to work with linux, so if you simply must have xD support, those would be your options. Now there is an xD driver for this chip. Supports kernel from 3.6.31. (http://launchpadlibrarian.net/44373795/ricoh_xd_3.tar.bz2) The driver is now in Maverick's kernel. You still need the udev rule to load FTL part of it. Or just add sm_ftl to /etc/modules. To install please do ./make sudo make install sudo make load Note that this package installs several kernel modules, similar to compat-wireless So, make sure that there is no conflict between existing mtd modules and these. *NOTE* If you use kernel lower that 2.6.34, please be sure to unload the ricoh-mmc driver. It conflicts with this driver. This does meant that on this kernel you *can't* use both xD and MMC cards To be sure that ricoh-mmc is not loaded, you should see the following output: You can use a modified sdhci driver for mmc cards I attached. This has been identified to be a problem in how the the vista driver handles reseting the touchpad and keyboard versus how Ubuntu handles it. The information provided in this report is relative to: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LaptopTestingTeam/HotkeyResearch Additional information is provided relative to: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies These are notes on the HotkeyResearch wiki page methods: 1. Method 1. Cannot use. The Keyboard Shortcuts no longer provide magic numbers. 2. Method 2. This method sucessfully provided information which is attached to this comment (hotkey-log.txt). Although this method did provide information, X no longer accepted keystrokes and it was necessary to logout using the mouse and log back in. hotkey-setup was properly restarted as directed, so this is probably a bug in an of itself. 3. Method 3. Cannot use. /var/log/acpid is no longer present. I was able to determine an acpi event was not generated when pressing the key by using acpi_listen. 4. Method 4. Did not provide information. Pressing the key did not generate reportable key release events using xev per the directions. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 418826] Re: [Inspiron 1525] hibernate/resume failure
** Changed in: somerville Status: New = Invalid ** No longer affects: dell -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/418826 Title: [Inspiron 1525] hibernate/resume failure Status in The Somerville Project: Invalid Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu: Won't Fix Bug description: Hibernate/resume fails.
