[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1784585] Re: CPUs stall

2018-08-09 Thread Joe Wood
Hi,

I have not forgotten your request to try linux-next. I’ve built the new
kernel.

Please be advised that I copied the current kernel config file from
/boot into the build directory. Upon running make, there where a
significant number of new options. I choose to let them all go through
on their default setting.

I’m hoping to try the new kernel this weekend, but I need to backup my
system first. My laptop only has usb 1.1 so this maybe slow.

You are quite correct I’m running in i386 mode. I’ve got a 64bit Ubuntu
image, 18-04, on a usb drive. It would be interesting to see how booting
a live Ubuntu worked.

For various reasons I’m keen to install the x64 and forget about the
i386. But I’ll definitely try the new i386 build first.

Any comments/suggestions are welcome.

Looks like it's i386 instead of AMD64?

Please try linux-next [1] since there are some new PTI fixes.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1784585] Re: CPUs stall

2018-07-31 Thread Joe Wood
Hi,

Firstly, this problem has been ongoing since I dug my old laptop back to
life, say January 2018. I put a new SSD in before installing Ubuntu
17-10 plus updates. I later updated to 18-04, all at current latest
official releases.

I’m copying the full syslog output, since systems/journal failed.

I’ve also am copying the last run dmesg log as the kernel reported two problems:
(A) CPU stalled at around 40 seconds.
(B) Page protection error W+X.

I’ve removed the mainline kernel and reverted to current Ubuntu release.

Hope that helps.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1784585] Re: CPUs stall

2018-07-31 Thread Joseph Salisbury
Did this issue start happening after an update/upgrade? Was there a
prior kernel version where you were not having this particular problem?

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer
to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest
v4.18 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following
tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag:
'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as
"Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.
