Re: [kicad-users] Footprint for jumper?

2010-05-04 Thread Andy Eskelson
Depends on what you mean by "jumpers"
If you are referring to the small plug in links then no, such links are
usually 0.1 inch spacing. For such links I normally use one of the header
modules, SIL-2, 3, 6 or whatever suits the circuit.

If you check GS2 with the module editor you will find that it's pad
spacing is much smaller, and they are pads rather than thro-hole.

You can check this with the module editor.

If you have not already done so, print out the footprint document They
are a very useful reference to have to hand when choosing which footprint
to use. It's i the documents directory, or can be access from CVpcb one
of the icons brings up the footprint doc.

[kicad-users] Footprint for TI PowerPAD: SMD with holes.

2010-03-30 Thread catalin_cluj
Hello,
I'm trying to make a footprint for a "thing" that TI calls a "PowerPad" and is
in fact an MSOP-10 with a thermal pad that has 5 holes going to the bottom
where I think there is another pad.
See TLV4113 in DGQ package.

I found a footprint in "m-pad-2.1" but it's wrong, anyway that's what I'm
modifying.
How do I put 5 holes it the center pad?
Or, does somebody have a footprint that works?

Thanks,

Cat

Re: [kicad-users] Footprint for a Relay ?

2010-01-23 Thread Andy Eskelson
One trick I sometime use if I cannot find a datasheet, (rare as you can
usually find one in the various suppliers catalogues.) is to use a piece
of matrix board. Most leaded components are on a 0.1 inch grid (there are
exceptions but there are not too many) You can then count the hole
spacing.

The footprint is just that, an outline of the component. The critical
part is any pad or mounting hole requirements. Just treat the leads as
normal component leads, but I would suggest that you make the pads
fairly large as they need to support a much heavier component than
something like an IC.

Many relays have a standard numbering system, especially if they are
intended to be plugged into some form of holder. there are some
variations, but generally they are two digit such as 11, 12, 13, 21, 22,
23 and so on, the coils are normally A1 and A2. I have also seen some
bases with a letter and a number as well. The numbers refer to the poles
and contacts, so 11 is pole 1 contact 1, 12 is pole 1 contact 2, 21 is
pole 2 contact 1 and so on. I can't remember offhand which is the normally
closed/open and common connections, I usually end up buzzing it out to be
sure :-)

Miniature PCB mount relays tend to be a little more variable.

As for footprint, well you use the footprint that matches the relay...
(I cannot see one in the standard lib) I drew up a simple footprint the
last time I used a relay.

I've used this SPST 12V 10A directly soldered into the PCB
http://www.rapidonl ine.com/searchre sults.aspx? style=0&kw= 60-4600

and the 60-4110 Double pole socket
http://www.rapidonline.com/Electronic-Components/Relays-Solenoids/PCB-Relays/Miniature-relay-sockets/28667/kw/60-4110

I have simple footprints for both, if they are of any use you are welcome
to a copy.

Hi,
Thank you for the answer. That brings me to the question as to what to do if I
do not have a data sheet for the part.
Can I measure various lengths on the part and gaps between the pins and create
my footprint ?
What should be the minimum tolerance (in inches) to get a decent footprint ?

It all depend what actual device the part was based on, but essentially it is
as you say. Relay bases have a long history.

Find the data sheet for the actual relay you are going to use and pick the
footprint from that.

My suspicion is that the device in the library is a DIL16 part so you would
need a 16 pin DIL 0.3" footprint for the library device if you are using the
same part that the library is created for.

Datasheet time.

[kicad-users] Footprint for a Relay ?

Hi,

My guess is it uses a standard package with missing pins to get double

2. What foot print should I use for it in cvpcb ?

remember not to use the Cancel button on this dialog box :).

[kicad-users] Footprint field blank

2009-08-03 Thread pcbpete
Hi,

I'm new to KiCad and think that there may be a problem with the edit footprint
option in EESchema. If I select the Edit Component > Footprint (F) option the
footprint of the device is initially displayed. If I then select Cancel and
select the option again, the footprint field is blank. It appears that
cancelling the option erases the footprint information. Has anyone else
experienced this problem?

Re: [kicad-users] Footprint for 4017 chip

2009-07-01 Thread Andy Eskelson
It's a 16 pin DIL so use that
Normal footprint name is DIP16-300 or the EL verson for oval pads.

Don't forget that one footprint can be used with many different devices,
so don't always expect a 1:1 with lib and mod. Also devices often have
different packages, DIP, SMD SOIC and so on.

Pls resend the library, I cant find the email with it.

And where do I buy the component that matches it?
It actually looks very similar, but not quiet the same as the one I was looking

The .mod files are pcbnew modules. If you have WINRAR, is handles
both zip and rar files.

2009-02-06 Thread AD5VJ Bob
I wrote them on the same subject on the website asking them what I should use
or could they put up some datasheets for these types
of items.

They have not responded.

I wrote them on two other occasions and got an email back almost the next
morning. Maybe I should write one more time in case the
email got lost. They have been pretty good on communication.

RE: [kicad-users] Footprint

2009-02-06 Thread AD5VJ Bob
I have windows XPPro

I also dont know what to do with the zip file of the files that were converted
from Eagle they all say .mod

These file types dont match my library files here. All my library files here
say .lib .bak .dcm .bck .sym

And how do I handle the other compression types is there all windows does is
.zip files or I have an application for .rar files but
that is it.

They are definately not all the same physical layout on the holes. If
they don't have a drawing, then order one and measure it and make your
own module. The dtereo jacks I use on the UHFSDR board are from All
Electronics CAT # MJW-12. I made a module for them.

[kicad-users] Footprint

2009-02-06 Thread AD5VJ Bob
I have designed a circuit and have found a supplier for who has all of the
parts I need and the data sheets, ect..

The problem I am having is that I am wanting to put a circuit board mount type
3.55mm audio plug on the drawing for the pcb
manufacturer to have the holes there that I need to install it once I get the
board back.

I have gone to their site and found the audio plug that I want to use, but
there are no mechanical measurements for it on the
website.

Are these connectors so common in their sizes that it is not necessary to
specify the holes by using a footprint from the libraries,
or do you just put pads on the board where you want it installed?

Re: [kicad-users] Footprint vs module

2008-10-04 Thread Pedro Martin
Hi,

I think module is the same thing as footprint.

Maybe the difference could be to name module a footprint with fields,
graphics, keywords and reference documentation.

Anyway, in the Spanish translation we have kept the word module (módulo) just
because the author has use it (English module= French module and English
footprint = French trace or empreinte).

"Footprint" certainly refers to the "physical" footprint of an object
on the PCB, so it is only relevant as a term within PCBnew and Cvpcb.

EEschema uses abstract drawing symbols, and if I'm not mistaken, it uses
the term "components" to describe such drawing symbols.

A module seems to be the same thing as a footprint. If you hover
your mouse pointer over the Cvpcb icon in the main Kicad window, it is
described as "Components to modules".

Unless a module is a component combined with its footprint?

I'm working on updating some kicad documentation - I think the terms are both
used for the same
thing, unless I'm missing something. Do I have this straight - eeschema seems
to use footprint and
PCBnew calls the same thing modules?

In other programs, footprints are called "patterns" or "decals"
(PADSpcb/powerlogic called them decals).

Hi Patrick,

It is easier than that.

In pcbnew, select a module and edit its properties. Then click on "change
module" button. You can change only this module or all modules of the same
type.

[kicad-users] Footprint substitution

2008-05-02 Thread patrickymwong
Dear all,

One question on pcbnew, don't know whether there are simple way to
achieve.

For instance I defined footprint of several resistors as "R3" and
completed the PCB layout. After that I found there is another R3-
LARGE_PADS which is better. Is there a simple way to substitute the
orginal footprint with the newer one? I tried redefining the
netlist in cvpcb, but when pcbnew reads the altered netlist it
complaints the differences in footprint. I have to:

1. Delete the original modules;
2. Read in the new netlist and replace the new modules;
3. Re-route the traces to substituted components

If anyone have experience on this please kindly advise.

Thanks in advance,
Patrick

[kicad-users] footprint problem

I'm trying to add a new footprint module. I used another footprint as
a template and drew it and saved it without any problem. I added it to
my netlist fine but when I try and read it in Pcbnew I get an error
"module [SD1]: pad [p$1] not found" and it repeats for p$2 through
P$8. There are 11 pads on this SMD device, which is a 3M SD Card
socket. Any ideas what's causing the problem?

Hi Jos,
First u have to include the path of new libraries you created in the pcbnew
libs and dir for the corresponding project. Then u have to map the footprints
for components in your schematics (eeschema) in cvpcb to the footprints you
want. I guess this should solve your problem.

[kicad-users] Footprint field -> BOM: Why not?

2006-12-11 Thread apluscw
Unless I am missing something, the footprint field does not dump to
the BOM, but does dump to the net list. Is this something that can be
changed? I am now forced to enter the information twice, once for the
BOM and once for the netlist.

I would think this would be easy to add.
