[Koha] Need Documentation Help with new OAI Page

2012-03-27 Thread Nicole Engard
There is a new page in Koha 3.8 for OAI Sets, but I have never used
OAI and I don't know how to document this section.

The bug is here: http://bugs.koha-community.org/bugzilla3/show_bug.cgi?id=6440

And I welcome any help in documenting this section. You can submit a
documentation patch or just type in the email and I'll put it in the
manual for you.

Thanks a bunch!

Reader's Digest is similar to this and I tested this pattern given to
me years ago:

and it doesn't work. Any ideas welcome! I'm guessing that this worked
in 2008 when I added it ... but I can't remember.

You can enter a barcode on any manual invoice so I think that there
are many other instances where you could have a charge tied to an item
number ...

I'm going to do some manual invoice testing because I've never seen

You need a cardnumber and a patron category for each patron. I think

[Koha] Report help

Re: [Koha] Deleting duplicate biblios and biblios without items

2012-03-03 Thread Nicole Engard
You can only do it from the command line. I would back up your
database and then to delete the bibs without items run these three
commands in MySQL:

INSERT into deletedbiblio (SELECT * FROM biblio where biblionumber NOT
IN (SELECT biblionumber from items));
INSERT into deletedbiblioitems (SELECT * FROM biblioitems where
biblionumber NOT IN (SELECT biblionumber from items));
DELETE FROM biblio where biblionumber NOT IN (SELECT biblionumber from items);

For duplicates, there are reports to help you find duplicates but not
to delete them:
http://wiki.koha-community.org/wiki/SQL_Reports_Library#Duplicate_titles

[Koha] Advanced Pattern for Serials Help

2012-03-03 Thread Nicole Engard
I have this serial that comes every other month and is number like
this Vol 1 Num 1/2, Vol 1 Num 3/4. I have this pattern in place, but
it's not quite working.

See the screenshots here: http://screencast.com/t/exxF7ekCw

And the pattern I used is here:

Values for X
Add : 1
once every: 6
other values should be ok

Values for Y
Add : 2
oncer every : 1
When more than 12
Set back to 1

Values for Z
Add : 2
oncer every : 1
When more than 12
Set back to: 2

Any ideas on this? I've been working on it for ages now and have had
no luck - I don't know why it's not working.

Re: [Koha] Updating ebook records in Koha - what happens to adjusted biblio records?

2012-02-22 Thread Nicole Engard
You don't want to be reverting your imports. The ISBN match is a
string match so if the strings in the 020 field match each other then
they will match the records. If Safari uses another field for a
identifying number you could create a matching rule to use that field
instead of the ISBN so that you get more accurate matches. I know that
some ebook vendors do that.

Bonnie,

You need to attach an item for it to allow holds. There is a 'not for
loan' status of 'ordered' that you apply to the item record so that
patrons know it's not available yet and so that they can place holds
on them.

Thanks Kyle,

I guess we'll have to do some testing and see if what they want is
possible with a combo of this feature and the holds rules on the circ
matrix.

[Koha] Holds/Transfer Limit Question

2012-01-20 Thread Nicole Engard
I got this question today from a library about to go live with Koha
and I'm not exactly sure how to answer it.

"Our system is a collection of four sites. One of them (Library A)
has a severe restriction: Books from its collection cannot be
transferred to the other sites. They can be put on hold by patrons at
any of the branches, but must be picked up at Library A."

Is this possible? Will the Library Transfer Limits do this? I'm
thinking that if holds are allowed there is no way that they can stop
the transferring, but I could be wrong and would love to hear from any
of you who are using Library Transfer Limits or some such similar
feature/rule.

Thanks a bunch,

Re: [Koha] Patrons blocked after turning in overdues

2012-01-19 Thread Nicole Engard
Jim,

There are a few possibilities. You might have set the Suspension in Days
on the Circulation and Fines Matrix in Administration (
http://manual.koha-community.org/3.6/en/patscirc.html#circfinerules). The
other option is that you have it set to restrict patrons when they get
overdue notices and you can stop this by going to Tools > Overdue Notice
Status/Triggers and unchecking the box under 'restrict' (
http://manual.koha-community.org/3.6/en/noticetriggers.html).

Let me know if those work for you.

[Koha] Serials Planning Help

2012-01-06 Thread Nicole Engard
I have a strange Serial planning question. American Libraries
publishes 6 issue a year, and number them like this:

Volume 42 #7/8
Volume 42 #9/10
Volume 42 #11/12

Can anyone come up with a way to enter this in to Koha to allow for
this type of numbering? All I can come up with (and it's way sloppy)
is to tell Koha that it's 12 issues a year and then delete every other
issue and manually edit the volume/number field to show 7/8 or 9/10
etc.

Thanks in advance for any tips you can provide.

Nicole

PS. I am still looking for serials planning examples from all types of
journals/magazines so that I can share them in the manual and save new
Koha librarians time!

The CSV profile is used for downloading lists and carts and individual
records. So if you go in to a list you'll see the download option and under
there you'll see your CSV Profile. The same for the Cart and on the
individual record it's under 'Save' I think.

[Koha] Searching Tips in the Manual

2011-12-21 Thread Nicole Engard
Hello all,

I got a question recently about what fields were searched for the language
filter on the advanced search and I was going to add the answer to the
manual only to find that none of the fields are defined:
http://manual.koha-community.org/3.6/en/searchguide.html#searchguide-advanced

Do we know if there is documentation on this in zebra anywhere? Or does
anyone know (in a way that's quick and easy to answer) enough to tell me so
I can put something in the manual?

The searching guide that is in there was written for 3.0 and I honestly
never changed it because there is way too much about the search engine I

Anyway, if you have some tips, places I should look, or information you
want to share please do! You can just reply to all here or I also welcome
patches to the manual - but if you'd rather write it in a document or text
file go right ahead. I will credit you for the parts you write of course!

Thanks in advance,

That would be the same as my 'moderation' request - except that the staff
get to choose whether they moderate lists at all. It's more work for the
staff, so they should have a say in the matter. Like with the patron
submitting edits to their account - librarians can turn this option off if
it's too much work for them (or if they have other reasons).

I think this should be a preference that the librarians can choose from the
following options :

   1. Allow anyone to create public lists without moderation
   2. Allow patrons to create public lists with moderation
   3. Allow only staff (with permission) to create public lists

In addition I'd say we need general staff list permissions which we don't

Re: [Koha] how to restore deleted marc record/items

2011-11-26 Thread Nicole Engard
Tanzeem,

You'll need to know the biblionumbers you want to restore. And then you
need to move them out of the deleted tables and in to the original tables.
So if you want to restore biblionumber 100 you'd do something like this:

insert into biblio (select * from deletedbiblio where biblionumber=100);
delete from deletedbiblio where biblionumber=100;
insert in to items (select * from deleteditems where biblionumber=100);
delete from deleteditems where biblionumber=100;
insert in to biblioitems (select * from deletedbiblioitems where
biblionumber=100);
delete from deletedbiblioitems where biblionumber=100;

Of course you want to back up your database before doing anything like
that, but right now there is no way to restore records in the GUI, so you
have to do it in the DB.

[Koha] letterlog question

2011-11-16 Thread Nicole Engard
The LetterLog preference says 'Log/Don't log' when an automatic claim
notice is sent.

My question is does this log only track claim notices? or all
letters/notices?

Re: [Koha] Holds to Pull

2011-11-16 Thread Nicole Engard
I'm here with Barb and to those of you who replied to her saying to use the
Holds Queue, it's my understanding that the Holds Queue is showing you
titles that are for pickup at the branch you choose - can someone who knows
the code please tell me what branch the Holds Queue is looking at. I wrote
a report (
http://wiki.koha-community.org/wiki/SQL_Reports_Library#Holds_to_Pull_at_Branch)
to show the holds to pull list based on books owned by the library and it's
on the wiki and it's what most people I train are using because the way I
understand things is this:

- Holds Queue is all holds (regardless of whether they're checked out or on
the shelf) that need to be picked up at the branch
- Holds to Pull should be a list of all items on the shelf at your library
that have holds on them that you need to pull to trigger the hold

In addition to helping Barbara, your answer will help me fix the manual to
make it clearer for all.

It should be noted that while this field isn't in the MARC anymore, it is
still used on the MARC import tool as the item record. So if you're
importing records that have a 952 Koha will use that as the item record
still - it will just take the data out of the 952 and put it in to the
items table in the database.

Re: [Koha] Documentation - another slight change

2011-10-06 Thread Nicole Engard
Tom,

There is a category for documentation bugs in bugzilla:
http://bugs.koha-community.org if you'd like to remove the problems as you
find them.

I also accept any and all help in updating the manual :) There isn't much on
the wiki about that but there is a page:
http://wiki.koha-community.org/wiki/Editing_the_Koha_Manual and I can help
you if you want to get involved.

Nicole

PS. I'm finding out about this preference, but note that it does not work if
you're using Zebra.

[Koha] Fwd: Open Source Research Help Needed Please!

2011-10-05 Thread Nicole Engard
This came across the Bugzilla list and I thought some of you might be
interested in it.

Subject: Open Source Research Help Needed Please!
To: support-bugzi...@lists.mozilla.org

Hello!

We are asking you for some help from the Open Source communities.

As researchers at the University of Tennessee we are interested in
discovering more about learning and interactions of members of the open
source forums. This research is conducted through the University of
Tennessee and is in no way associated with any forum organization. To
further our research we would like input from forum members. The responses
are very important to us so we can better understand what tools help forum
members learn and have a productive experience in participation.

There are two ways you can help:

1. Take a survey about the tools you use in the forum.

We are requesting approximately 15 minutes of your time to participate in
our survey.
Survey link: http://survey.utk.edu/mrIWeb/mrIWeb.dll?I.Project=FORUMLEARN

*As a thank you, upon exiting the survey you will be given an opportunity to
submit information to be entered in a drawing for a tablet computer (iPad).
 *

2. Have a one on one interview talking about the forums, how you learn,
and tools used. *As a thank you for your interview you will be sent a
$25.00 gift card. * Email lh...@utk.edu for more information.

You may do either or both of the above. Please be assured that your answers
will be confidential. No individual’s answers will ever be identified in
any report. Should you have any questions about the project or our interest
in using the results, we encourage you to contact Lila Holt, at
lh...@utk.edu) or Vandana Singh at vand...@utk.edu.

Contact information you provide for the drawing is completely separate from
your survey answers and there will be no way to identify participants in the
actual survey responses. Nor will contact information be used for any other
purpose. The odds of being selected will depend on the number of respondents
to this survey.

Thank you so much!

Or you can do this:

SELECT title,author,barcode FROM biblio,items WHERE
biblio.biblionumber=items.biblionumber AND items.itype = <> AND (items.onloan is NULL or items.onloan = '')

So that it asks you for an item type and you don't have to edit again later.

What do you mean by 'do overdue.pl'? Overdues are sent automatically
by Koha using the cron job - your circulation staff shouldn't have to
touch anything related to that.

2011-08-16 Thread Nicole Engard
I won't be able to make it this year, so I won't be submitting
anything, but for future conferences, I don't finish my presentations
until the night before, so I won't be able to submit full papers or
finished presentations ahead of time. We work with technology and it's
changing hourly, so a presentation written this month is not always
valid in October ... just my 2 cents.

[Koha] Manual Help - Library Groups

2011-08-08 Thread Nicole Engard
Hello all,

One of our manual translators emailed me to ask me for some help today
and I unfortunately can't help.

My answer was basically that when I asked on list ages ago that was
the answer I got, I'd love more information for both the English and
the French (and all other languages as they come) manuals. Any and
all info is helpful!

If you have the auto signing in off then you will have to log in the
first time you load up the self check window on the machine - and may
have to log in again throughout the day sometimes depending on the

Woo Hoo!! I am the one who put that in the manual and didn't remember

[Koha] Brainstorm Help - Improve Reporting

2011-08-06 Thread Nicole Engard
Hello all,

I'm the 'report guru' at work and while I love writing reports I'm
trying to think of ways to save me some work. One thing that I often
do is open up two tabs in my browser so that I have the authorized
values open in one and the report in another. I'm looking for some
brainstorming help on a way to make the pertinent values accessible
right from the reporting module (shelving locations, patron
categories, item types, collection codes, etc etc). I'm sure there
is some fancy way for us to embed links to important values or lists
of the important values on the create from SQL page ... or maybe just
one page with the values you'll need to query often.

Another option is to update the runtime parameters function to allow
for more pull down menus (right now it only has a pull down for
branches - that I know of).

Sorry for my jumbled thoughts, but that's what brainstorming is about :)

Re: [Koha] Adding patron photos

2011-08-06 Thread Nicole Engard
David,

That feature is for you to add patron images, right now the patrons
cannot add their own images.

http://manual.koha-community.org/3.4/en/administration.html#patronimages
 - when it says on the staff client that means you can do it.

See the 4th bullet here:

Re: [Koha] Does anyone know how to delete patrons in bulk?

2011-08-06 Thread Nicole Engard
David,

The only way to do a bulk delete is to go into the MySQL database and
run the delete command. I think Chris gave you that command in
another email. But if you want all the patrons deleted you can use
this:

delete * from borrowers;

[Koha] Database upgrade funniness

2011-08-03 Thread Nicole Engard
I just did a fetch on my install of master and got the upgrade db
page. But this time the page said something funny:

"We are upgrading from Koha 3.05.00.004 to 3.05.00.004, you must
update your database"

There is no difference in those versions and nothing was actually
changed (at least not according to the screen). Is there a typo that
was pushed? Or did I have a problem in my system?

Gets this:

ERROR 1064 (42000): You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the
manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right
syntax to use near '       statistics

Also, a tip - those <<>> sections I had in there are runtime
parameters for Koha (a neat trick that is documented on the wiki and
in the manual - in case you removed them cause you didn't know what
they were).

If you don't mind, put your two pieces in to my report in the right
places - my problem is that I'm not sure the Join goes where I would
normally put it.

Re: [Koha] Problems Column in Inventory

2011-07-28 Thread Nicole Engard
That's interesting because I did an upload of a file that had a
barcode that was not in Koha and I didn't get that screen at all, what
I got was a message saying that the barcode was not found and a
confirmation that the date was updated on the other items in the file.
That list only shows if you enter criteria in the form (not if you
upload a text file).

See here: http://screencast.com/t/XgGKtYGm

[Koha] Problems Column in Inventory

2011-07-28 Thread Nicole Engard
Can anyone tell me what the last column that shows on the shelf
listing for the inventory tool is for? It is labeled as 'Problems' but
I have never seen anything but 'None' under that - and I've tested on
a lot of systems. What would a problem be? What is being reported by
this column?

[Koha] Report Help - Extracting XML

2011-07-27 Thread Nicole Engard
Hello all,

I need some report assistance. I want to add the summary (520a) to this report:

select count(statistics.datetime) as circs, CONCAT('',biblio.title,'')
AS Title, CONCAT('http://mycatalogv/cgi-bin/koha/opac-detail.pl?biblionumber=',biblio.biblionumber,'\">http://catalog.losgatosca.gov/cgi-bin/koha/opac-detail.pl?biblionumber=',biblio.biblionumber,'')
as URL, biblio.author, items.location from statistics join items on
(items.itemnumber=statistics.itemnumber) left join biblio on
(biblio.biblionumber=items.biblionumber) where
DATE(statistics.datetime) Between <> and
<> and statistics.itemnumber is not NULL and
location = <> group by biblio.biblionumber
order by circs DESC Limit 10

Can someone make some suggestions?

I'm pretty sure that info is tracked in the action_logs table if you
have the cataloging log turned on:
