If set the "OpacPublic" system preference to "Enable," the public will
not be required to log in to access Koha' OPAC.

If you also want to *prevent* users from logging in to the OPAC you
can set "opacuserlogin" to "Don't allow."

It sounds like those two preferences will get you what you're looking for.

If you are using OPACAmazonCoverImages you're not keeping anything,
you're loading the image directly from Amazon (if they have one with a
matching ISBN).

OPACLocalCoverImages allows you to manually upload a cover image for a
record, so you have complete control over whether something has a
local cover image.

Bugzilla votes are problematic, because there is no way to promise
anyone that a bug with a lot of votes will get worked on. It's kind of
like when someone posts on an enhancement bug saying "Why isn't anyone
working on this?" Which bugs are worked on depends entirely on who is
being paid or who has volunteered.

I like the idea of highlighting bugs which are popular in votes, but I
think if we had something like a regular email to the mailing list
we'd have to make it clear that it was informational and folks who are
interested should see about sponsoring the work somehow.

I think you've found a bug. It shouldn't be possible to subscribe to a
private list because you must be logged in to the OPAC to be able to
access them. We don't have any mechanism for providing a private RSS

The first step towards fixing it will probably be to hide the RSS

In my test the Google Authentication link doesn't appear on the staff
interface login screen. I don't know if the feature is supposed to be
working there or if it's only for the OPAC.

In the OPAC, the Google Authentication link doesn't appear on the home
page but clicking the "Log in to your account" link at the top takes
you to a Google sign-in form. This makes me think that it's working,
but that we need to add a "Log in with Google" button to the sign-in
form on the OPAC home page.

Re: [Koha] [koha] Authorized value for category_types

2021-08-12 Thread Owen Leonard
> WHERE categories.category_type= <>

category_type is an odd one. It's not an authorized value. In fact I
don't think they're defined anywhere in the database at all, just
hard-coded into templates and scripts. They're intended to be fixed
values, not ones which can be modified.

I don't think there's any way to get an SQL report to generate a set
of options based on these values. It would be nice if one could supply
a set of user-defined options in a runtime parameter, e.g. <> but that would be complicated for
users. I think in your case you might have to rely on good
documentation in the report notes to let the user know which
category_type codes are valid.

Re: [Koha] Update jquery

2021-06-02 Thread Owen Leonard
> How to update jquery version in koha 18.04?

The jQuery version in 18.05 is 2.2.3, and I see that it does have some
reported vulnerabilities: https://snyk.io/test/npm/jquery/2.2.3. I'm
assuming this is your motivation for updating it?

I have no idea what might break if you drop in jQuery 3.6.0 (currently
the latest version) in place of the version in 18.05. At the very
least you must also replace the jquery-migrate plugin with the latest
version as well. There is information about upgrading on their web
site: https://blog.jquery.com/2021/03/02/jquery-3-6-0-released/ You'll
have to either rename the new files to match the old ones or update
the templates that refer to those file names.

Then you'll have to see if anything breaks! As you know, 18.05 is no
longer supported, so upgrading Koha is recommended. We haven't updated
jQuery, but we have worked to replace some of the older jQuery plugins
which are more likely to break with a jQuery upgrade. I recommend
proceeding with caution, and only if you're concerned about security
vulnerabilities.

Yes, you're experiencing the bug I described. Until the bug is fixed
and the fix is released there is a workaround which will replicate the
old behavior:

- Administration -> Global System Preferences -> Local use -> New preference
- Create a system preference called "OpacLoginInstructions"
- Enter text or HTML in the "value" field and it should appear in the OPAC.

Re: [Koha] Description on the OPAC user login and password

2021-04-22 Thread Owen Leonard
> How to change the description on the OPAC user login and password entry.

It depends on which version of Koha you're using. In older version of
Koha there is a system preference called "OpacLoginInstructions" which
allows you to put in text or HTML.

This was later (in 20.05.x) moved into the News Tool so that different
text could be provided in more than one language.

Unfortunately it looks like a regression was introduced in the master
branch and in 20.11.04 which breaks the use of this News block on the
login page, so you may have to wait for a patch for it to work again.
I will be working on it today:

In my experience when this happens in other (non-Koha) situations, the
explanation is in the photo's EXIF data:
https://www.howtogeek.com/254830/why-your-photos-dont-always-appear-correctly-rotated/

Koha isn't designed to read EXIF orientation data. If the photo was
created in landscape mode and it's the data which tells your photo
viewer that it should be displayed in portrait mode, Koha doesn't know
it.

I don't know if this has any relevance to your situation but I thought
it might help. I've never seen Koha incorrectly rotate a cover image.

I don't think anyone on this list has the ability to tell you yes or
no from a legal standpoint. From the point of view of US copyright law
we would consider the use of book cover images from external services
like Google Books to be either allowed under copyright law (depending
on your interpretation, e.g.
https://www.sidebarsaturdays.com/2017/09/30/httpswp-mep7vddb-w5) or
"reasonable risk," e.g.
https://librarianwhodoesntsayshhh.com/2014/05/26/book-cover-images-copyright.

These links don't point to legal opinions and I'm not offering legal advice.

That said, I've never heard of any library getting in trouble for
using the GoogleJackets feature. We've been using it and Amazon cover
images for years.

[Koha] Feature deprecation: OpacGroupResults

2020-11-04 Thread Owen Leonard
It was agreed at today's developer meeting that the system preference
OpacGroupResults and its associated functionality would be removed in
Koha 21.05.

It is described in system preferences as, "Use/Don't use PazPar2 to
group similar results on the OPAC. This requires that PazPar2 is set
up and running."

The feature is enabled only .1% of the time: 9 out of 6,405 libraries
reporting their usage.

If you are among these libraries please plan ahead for the removal of
the feature.

"Location" refers to shelving location within a library. Koha has
various ways to manage temporary shelving locations and they require a
corresponding permanent location. For instance, in the documentation
on authorized values:

"CART: Is the shelving cart location, used by
InProcessingToShelvingCart and ReturnToShelvingCart
PROC: The location to be used for NewItemsDefaultLocation (change
description as desired), also the location expected by
InProcessingToShelvingCart."
https://koha-community.org/manual/20.05/en/html/administration.html?highlight=cart#existing-values

See this cron job:
"Script path: misc/cronjobs/cart_to_shelf.pl: Does: updates all items
with a location of CART to the item’s permanent location."

Re: [Koha] Koha Local Cover Images and Webp Image Format

2020-07-01 Thread Owen Leonard
> I was wondering if there was anything in the works to make Koha
> compatible with Webp images for, say, local image covers?

The local cover image system uses the GD library to convert any of
the accepted upload formats to PNG. It looks like the GD library also
generates Webp images, so that seems possible.

I haven't looked into Webp very much, but I've noticed that when I
encounter them on a web page they're often included in such a way that
there is a fallback image for browsers which don't support it. There
are still some major gaps in browser support:

https://www.caniuse.com/#feat=webp

Since local cover images are stored in the database rather than the
filesystem it would not be ideal to have to store more than one
format, so if you wanted to support Webp you'd probably have to have a
preference to turn it on and off, and then some process of rebuilding
all the data in biblioimages from one format to the other.

Another option would be the relatively new "CustomCoverImages"
preference which allows you to host cover images yourself and use them
in Koha based on a URL pattern.

I think this is a good idea. There's no reason not to offer it as a
choice if it's possible to do both. I think an argument could be made
that it shouldn't be a choice presented to the librarian and therefore
should be a setting in Koha's configuration file rather than, say, a
system preference.

The plan is to move all HTML content preferences into the news system.
The OpacNavRight switch was just the first. However, things have

bug in the series, Bug 22880:

Convert opacheader system preference to news block

If that meets with approval it will lay the groundwork for the rest:
OpacMainUserBlock, OpacNav, OpacCredits, etc.

Please test if you can!

The answer is in the bug which that bug depends on:

Extend Koha news feature to include other content areas

OpacNavRight is the first content area to be moved to the "news"

Do you bibliographic records have items attached? The item record is
where the library information is stored. It sounds like you need to
set the "Permanent location" and "Current location" values in the item
records. If you can put together an SQL report to return the set of

The guarantor fields are always shown if the patron you're adding has

I've been working on a possible solution to Bug 23039
(https://bugs.koha-community.org/bugzilla3/show_bug.cgi?id=23039). My
proposal moves check-in
messages into the confirmation modals. I've posted a brief video here
of how it looks:

https://zivotdesign.com/p/uploads/big/3d6b8a24067f27a834d03b8e104d7a40.mp4

If there is no popup (no hold confirmation, no transfer), messages
and/or errors will be displayed onscreen just like they have in the
past.

I'd love to hear opinions about it, either here or on the bug report.

Thanks!

I'm copying this out-of-thread reply because I think it's important
for anyone who's watching this issue:

On Wed, Jul 31, 2019 at 7:56 PM Ing. Marcos Rene Alvarez Moreno
 wrote:

A direct link: https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2015-9251

I want to point out that one aspect of the original post in this
conversation is incorrect: 18.11.x uses jQuery 2.2.3 (not 1.7)

However, the issue is the same: The fix for the vulnerability was not
packported from jQuery 3 to earlier versions.

Note that there is a non-upgrading option for fixing the problem suggested here:

https://github.com/jquery/jquery/issues/2432#issuecomment-403761229

Updating Koha to use jQuery 3.0 is certainly the way forward but is
not an immediate fix.

Thanks for raising this issue,

Re: [Koha] Z3950 search results

2019-07-12 Thread Owen Leonard
A related question: When using the Z39.50 search function in
cataloging do you think it's necessary that the search form and search
results appear in a pop-up window? The MARC/Card/Import buttons were
combined into a menu because of the limited space available in the
window. Changing the size would make things less cramped.

Is it important that one be able to have the Z39.50 window open
separately from the MARC editor?

I would love to hear as many opinions as possible!

2019-06-14 Thread Owen Leonard

The 'reserves' table contains "active" holds. Holds which have not yet
been fulfilled or canceled. When a hold has been fulfilled it is moved
to the 'old_reserves' table for historical/reporting purposes. You
would refer to 'old_reserves' if you were seeking statistics about
holds processed in the past.

> If I need to get a list of all the holds, for which the books are

Since you say "currently," that means the 'reserves' table. Note that
a similar relationship exists between 'issues' and 'old_issues.'
Similarly, 'borrowers' and 'deletedborrowers,' 'biblio' and
'deletedbiblio.'

Yes. I think what you describe is typical for library operation except
for the duration of the loan, and Koha can handle that just fine. Koha
makes it possible for you to create custom reports (see examples here:
https://wiki.koha-community.org/wiki/SQL_Reports_Library) which should
be flexible enough for your needs.

If your goal is to provide custom images to your installation of Koha,
you can use the "Remote image" option in Item types administration.
You can enter a URL pointing to an image file which is hosted
somewhere web-accessible.

If you're asking how to contribute a new set of images to be included
with Koha, you should first ensure that you're working with images
which have an appropriate license for inclusion in Koha. File a bug at

Enabling the OpacAddMastheadLibraryPulldown preference and inspecting

They are, if you configure them that way. However, it looks like
patron attributes are only searched in the general/keyword type patron
search. You are not provided with a specific search option for these
like you are for Sort 1 and Sort 1.

For patrons, Sort 1 and Sort 2 are configurable authorized values:

Look for Bsort1 and Bsort2.

You can append one line to that query:

This will limit your query to any title with "mechatronics" anywhere
in the title.

Are you trying to generate a report which lists all titles? You could
create an SQL report as simple as:

SELECT title FROM biblio ORDER BY title

There are more complex ways to build reports if you want clickable
links in the output. The SQL reports library has examples like this:

https://wiki.koha-community.org/wiki/SQL_Reports_Library#Biblios_with_like_data_in_a_subfield_of_a_field

Or if you have a more specific need please provide more details.

To be clear: You want to limit the ability to forgive but not limit
the ability to accept and otherwise manage fines? You can grant (or
disallow) an individual account permission to manage all fines using
the "Manage patrons fines and fees (updatecharges)" permission. If you
want to prevent staff from using the "write off" option you can
uncheck the "Write off fines and fees (writeoff)" permission.

I assume you're replacing DOMAIN.NAME and YOUR_REPORT_ID with the

I can at least confirm that I see the same result: For that particular
ISBN the image doesn't load. For others it does. I don't see how it
could be caused by anything within Koha. As far as I can tell the
problem is that Amazon isn't serving up the image at the expected

we can complain if it occasionally fails.

Amazon book covers only appear if the ISBN in your Koha record matches
the ISBN of the item on Amazon.com. It's very common for there to be
no cover on Amazon, especially for non-book items like CDs or DVDs. If

However, how would the library eventually cancel the transfers except
