KR> Updated web page photos

2008-11-10 Thread Neal Hornung
I don't add to the notes on the krnet but only rarely. I do however read the
ones submitted every day and enjoy all of the input and good information that
can be gleaned from the various ones submitted. But, today I just updated my
web page with new photos of my KR2 and just had to share them with the rest of
you. The address is: http://www.sharkdriver.zoomshare.com. If you want to
see the photos simply click on the "photos" section and there are several
albums to see. I added an album of the fiberglas tail fairing that I made as
well as an album showing the construction of my carbon fiber canopy frame. I
had a side hinged one made of fiberglas but due to an unfortunate incident the
plexiglas got cracked. I bought another plexiglas bubble from the Airplane
Factory down by Dayton, Ohio and with the new layup I can't believe how much
stiffer the carbon fiber is. The day I picked it up I got to help form a new
canopy that was being molded and that was a neat experience. I also have
added pictures of the carbon fiber layup of the seat bottom. It has two layers
on the bottom with 1/2 " of foam in the middle and then two more layers on the
top. It is stiff enough to stand on when climbing in the plane and didn't need
any extra bracing underneath. It was designed to hook over the front and rear
spars and really fits well.

Check out the site and let me know what you guys think. I have pulled the
wings back off and put up a portable 10' X 20' garage over the fuselage for the
winter inside my hangar. My wife bought me the garage last Christmas so I
could work through the winter months. I can heat it up with a 50,000 BTU
salamander keresone heater but I can't heat my 42' X 34' uninsulated hangar.
On a 20 degree day I can get the garage heated up to close to 60 degrees. I
plan on installing a Ray Allen servo in the elevator this winter for the trim
tab and want to get an antenna installed in the rear of the fuselage. I am
planning on putting wing tip lights on it too before next spring. Next spring
I hope to have it ready for the multiple coats of primer/filler that it will
need and then you know what?..SAND, SAND, SAND, and then SAND some more! A
lot of you have been there before, right?

I would appreciate any feedback on the pictures. Thanks.

KR> Corvair College

2008-11-10 Thread da...@alltel.net

Only if I get if finished and installed on the plane. For now, it is just a
side project. I think, for the most part, it is a pretty neat engine. The VW
does have some things that are a lot better, like the accessory case, but I
think with the fifth bearing options, it is now a viable option for an airplane
engine. In fact, I think that the WW and Roy bearings are better than anything
on a VW.

Does this mean we have a Corvair convert on our hands?

KR> Ordering Spruce

2008-11-10 Thread Brad Payne
I ordered my wood kit from Wicks Aircraft Supply. The "KIT" was off in many
ways.

The Kit is a good start, but I am sure you will need too add or change a few
things.

I had to splice together my 4 main longerons. Luckily, my Dad/co-builder is
great at making jigs, so with his help, it was no problem.

If you make the tail surfaces with the templates that are on the new airfoil
drawings, you will need larger material for the spars in the tail surfaces
as well.

I would do the following:

1) Add another 12" - 24" of the material for the vertical webs inside the
front spars. (There is not enough supplied if you are making the spars for
the new airfoil)

2) request 4 of the 5/8" Sq be as long as you need + a few inches. Remember
the fuselage sides bow so your logerons are longer than the front to back
length on the plan.

3) I needed another 4x4 sheet of 3/32" birch ply because the main spars are
taller on the new airfoil and you sheet both side of the spars all the way
to the tip of the outer spar.

4) Review what you need for the new tail if you are going to use the
templates on the new airfoil plans. The kit's HS and VS spars are not tall
enough for the new tail. In addition, some people like the make the HS
wider.

KR> KR-2 Wanted

2008-11-10 Thread Phil Matheson
To fly it with two people in it you have to modify and build the cabin wider
( Standard Kr is only 34")
--
You are correct but you can do it. I have now flown a 2.5 leg with two large
adults. I'm 5 ft 11, and 85 kgs, my father is 5ft 6 and 80 kgs. Full fuel.
KR2. tri gear.

Today I had a friend, he is 95kgs and it flew well., but remember I only
have wing tanks, type 4 with belt drive, 60x 60 x 3 blade ground adjustable
prop. 100 hp. So I have a good forward W

It can be done!!!
