Hi Dan

I meant to include Champion Spark plug link, page 4 explains all you want to
know.

http://www.championaviation.com/pdf/64552_Champion_ElecL.pdf

I noticed you are using REB 37 b which is 2 nickel electrodes. If you use
an REB 37e (2 massive electrodes) or a REB 37n (4 massive electrodes, they
can be found cheaply on eBay.

Installation of a mixture meter would tell you immediately what your

My airplane has always been very sensitive to mixture while flying.
If I didn't have it set in that magic spot I may get a slight hiccup.
It's never that sensitive on the ground though as I can do a full static
runup (3000 rpm) on the ground while never missiing a beat while playing
with the mixture.

KR> Temporary partial loss of power

2009-04-07 Thread Rich Seifert
Hi Mark
Definately fuel related. Do your best to eliminate all the sources of
fuel restrictions on the ground. My bet is "vapor lock". Insolate you fuel
lines, and route cool air to your gascolater. If you have done that and
still have the problem; bad tank vent location as already mentioned is
another strong possability. Another is your ram air installation ( if it
appears to be air speed related). Ram air can pressurize the floatbowl and
reduce your fuel flow. All three of these fuel flow restrictions have
affected me and my VW powered KR2. A good first step is to verify you have
at least three times your maximum, engine required, fuel flow in nose high
and nose low attitudes. In your case; I would shoot for 15 gallons per hour
"at the carb float bowl" as a minimum. Let us know what you find.
Good luck

KR> Cleaning Brushes and Buying Peel Ply

2009-04-07 Thread Kurt Clement
Good thing I love what I am doing. I spent 3 hours last night cutting out the
VStab spar and leading edge. I did it twice and will have to do it again. I
know a table saw would make it easier, but it is not in the budget. So 3 hours
down the drain. I love hearing all of the near and completed project stories,
but I am still in the learning how to use my tools phase. I actually layed up
some fiberglass for the HStab spar flange and thought "Hey, it actually looks
like I know what I am doing."

So here is a question: After laying up fiberglass I have tried to clean my
brush, but I end up throwing it away because it just hardens from all the
epoxy/resin. I tried soaking it in Acetone (which after the Acetone evaporated
just glued it to the bottom of the cannister, who knew?) I tried just wiping
them off with Acetone, but that didn't return the brush to useability. The
brushes are only 50 cents at Harbour Freight, but if there was a better way.

Also: I need to buy some peel ply for the fiberglass layup. I was told I could
just go to any fabric store to save on shipping from Aircraft spruce, but no
one at JoAnn's knew what I was needing, any suggestions?

Good news is that my wife was making some chalk boards and I just used some
flox and 5 min epoxy and created a much nicer job than her original with joint
nails.

I use lacquer thinner to clean brushes. First I use a paper towel to remove
as much of the epoxy as I can by squeezing it out of the brush and into the
paper towel, then I use about a half inch of lacquer thinner in the bottom
of a baby food jar to thoroughly swish the brush around and remove more
epoxy, then I dry it off with another clean paper towel. That method will
get you several uses for a brush. Cap the thinner and use it the next time.

Dacron is supposed to be the suitable substitute for peel ply, but the word
is to remove it before the epoxy completely cures because it will be harder
to remove after curing. Real peel ply (depending on who you buy it from)
has a release agent on it that makes it easier to remove after curing, but
even then, it's not "easy".

KR> Cleaning Brushes (but nothing about peel ply)

2009-04-07 Thread James Millar
The best way I know of to clean brushes is what I whimiscally call
"counterflow" but most people call "3 jar."
You (after squeezing out as much as possible) swish thoroughly in each of 3
jars in turn. The first one gets dirtiest, the second not so much, and the
third hardly at all.
Once your first jar is too gucky to use, you responsibly dispose of it, move
the other two up, and pour another to take the "jar 3" spot. This way, you
get the brushes cleaner, while using solvent more efficiently.

KR> Cleaning Brushes and Buying Peel Ply

2009-04-07 Thread Barry Kruyssen
Hi Kurt

I use only CHEAP brushes that cost less than a dollar (I had to try quite a
few different brands to find one that did not shed to many hairs). Once I
weigh up the cost of the cleaner, how much time and frustration I save, I
just throw them away. My main tool is a 3" rubber squeegee for spreading and
working the resin into glass. It's fast, easy and uses minimum resin. The
1" to 1.5" brush is only used where the squeegee cannot get and on edges
that might pull a thread.

James's "3 Jar" doesn't sound too bad.

Barry Kruyssen

Yep, for spreading epoxy on foam or glass, a squeegee is the only way to go.
Bondo sells three different sizes in a pack for just a couple of dollars at

paper towel and a few drops of lacquer thinner. Brushes

I found this out the hard way and had to restart my seat all over again.

Here is a pic and the description from my site about what happened.

http://www.kr-2s.com/images/fail_600.jpg

*"Everything went perfectly well until I went to remove the peel ply. I'd
been staying back at work until late working on the WAFs. I didn't get to
removing the peel ply for three days and discovered that by this time it had
become brittle as the epoxy had completely hardened within it. Peeling it
off was akin to peeling a price sticker off a CD. What has been peeled off
in this pic took in excess of one hour! My sense of humor wore thin to say
the least so I will start all over again but will use this skin as a mold
for the next.
As a postscript to this disaster, 6 months later I found out that a well
meaning friend bought a few meters of fabric that looked like peel ply from
a haberdashery store when I had asked them to go to my fiberglass supply
shop."*

To all,  It is with great saddness that I can say that the fellow that crashed
his KR outside of Valdosta was a longtime friend of mine Cary Howard.  I waited
for family permission before releasing his name.  Cary was a great man, quiet
yet energetic.  He did a lot of work for me through the years as an
electritian.  I spent many hours working, talking and flying with him.  He
lived in Florida about an hour away.  Many in the KR group may have met him at
the KR gathering in 06 when he flew with me to Mt. Vernon IL.  He leaves behind
a wife and two grown children...  He will be missed by all who knew him.  He
was a pilot of some time and had flew a variety of aircraft.  The details of
the crash are that he had an apparent electrical fire (thought to come from a
radio install he performed just prior to the flight) and was executing an
emergency landing and clipped a tree.  More details will be handled through the
FAA.   Please put
his family in your prayers.

Hi Kurt, Easiest way I found is to have a bucket of acetone with a lid on it
beside my work bench. I drop the brush in it BEFORE it starts to set and
continue doing other things like laying peel ply on with a squeegie. When I'm
finished I wash the brush around in the acetione and wipe dry with a rag. Next
I rub in a generous quantity of citrus hand cleaner which rips through the

Hi Guys, I have contacted a few of the active KR 2ers (Via LAA & other
contacts) already to try and find a suitable project out there (and in the
process of following up leads) and I think there must be at least 10 part
complete projects out there that the owners wish to sell, and I would rather
save an airframe from the bonfire,(and more than a few hours duplicating
someones efforts).

If I could please ask you to get in touch if you want to sell.

(or if you know of somone not on the internet, please pass on my number)

I would prefer to trade a Motorcycle or Diesel 4x4 7 seater, to clear my
garage to accomadate the build, but will pay deposit & auction them to raise
cash if prefered by seller for the right aircraft or project.

To the KR 2 owners who are helping so far ,thank you, the UK may be small
compared with the US but the Builders / flyers are exceptional.
