KR> EFB software

2010-09-17 Thread laser...@juno.com
> It ain't cheap, however.

It also has some other, more serious drawbacks according to many postings
I've read over the last few years on the AOPA "Flight Bag" forum.
Slowness has been a very major complaint - bloated code. Other
complaints have to do with lock-ups and inexplicable behavior (bugs).
A number of users have given up on it and gone to other solutions. I
never see the program discussed anymore other than that the company
provides chart updates for the AV8OR ACE. Between the two high-end
packages - Seattle Avionics and Flight Prep - the nod has definitely gone
to the latter although the buzz these days doesn't include either one.
If you are an AOPA member and can get into the forums (actually, I'm not
sure you have to be a member come to think of it), do a search and see if
my impressions are accurate. I haven't seen Voyager discussed in months
even though EFB's and EFB software are constant hot topics.

If you get it I would sure give it a good workout within your money back
period and see if it's worth keeping.

I went for a ride in a 337 this afternoon whose owner has a 3G iPad
loaded with Skycharts. I've been thinking the iPad was useless in direct
sun but I have been wrong. I found it very usable. Another friend has
Foreflight on his iPad and took it on a trip in his Glasair from KSEE to
Arlington Fly-In and raves about it. He did a demo for me in the hangar
and all I can say is "wow". Foreflight is $75/yr and is being enhanced
and improved on a daily basis.

The company that produces Flight Guides is soon due to release their EFB
offering. Their little books have been amazingly good over the years and
I'm sure they'll do a good job with their new software. In order to be
competitive it will surely do everything the other products do plus some
ideas of their own. GA is in the doldrums yet the world of GPS-based
navigation and planning packages is blossoming like crazy. And new
screen technology - brighter, faster with less power drain, is coming
anytime now.

KR> wing stub repair

2010-09-17 Thread Clay
Good morning KRnet,

I will start by saying up front, that I am no builder. But given the
circumstances, I have to learn.

Is there any information about wing repair?

I recently acquired a kr2 98% complete and love it, although I have yet to
fly it.

This is where the 2% gets me.

Before I acquired the plane, there was some damage to the wing stub that
occurred during trailer transporting.

I honestly (again, I am no builder) don't know if a patch will work or if
the whole stub needs a new skin

If anyone has time to look at the pictures and give me their honest opinion,
I can email pictures of my injured kr.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Clay

KR> moving map and flight planning software

2010-09-17 Thread Mark Langford
Thanks to all that responded for my request for decent moving map software.
The one that really amazes me is Voyager. See details at
http://www.seattleavionics.com/default.aspx . They have a 30 minute video that
sums up an amazing capability...all of the stuff that I thought ought to be
displayed is there, implemented as if I'd designed it myself. It ain't cheap,
however.

I got a little flying in this afternoon, and added another photo to the top of
the sunset stuff at http://www.n56ml.com/sunsets/ . Tomorrow's slated to be
another great flying day...

If the ELT goes off..that comm antenna will be pretty much the last
worry you have. Go with the 3 feet or the best you can do.

KR> ELT antenna location

2010-09-17 Thread PETER KAREN GAUTHIER
I just acquired an ACK model E-01 ELT. I went with this because it is the most
inexpensive way to be legal, I'll upgrade when I begin to do some serious
flying out of the valley. My problem is the installation instructions say to
mount the antenna 1.6 meters (5') from the comm antenna. My comm antenna is
about 16" behind the seatback, that only leaves 3' to the most aft location in
the fuselage that I can easily mount the antenna with some sort of a ground
plane. How important is the 5' separation?

Thanks,

I'm always amazed how quickly people take offense at something that
they totally miss interpreted. Mark was in no way saying you were
not capable of building an airplane. He said that someone not
capable of building a dual stick assembly from the drawings on his
web page shouldn't be building and airplane and I agree. It's up to
you to decide if you are capable after reviewing the drawings. I
think we've all known Mark long enough to give him the benefit of
doubt if you think he's just hit you in the head with a brick. He
probably wasn't even throwing at you. If he intends to hit you he
probably won't miss.

I haven't read all the posts about the dual stick assembly so this may have
been mentioned...

Have you thought about installing a single, center stick and putting a 'T'
or 'Y' on top?

The Zeniths have this and apparently there is almost no time required to
adapt to it.

A thought.

2010-09-17 Thread Richard Parker
Thanks for that write up. Very informative

Btw for all you aviators who have enough property and might want to put in a
landing strip or helipad, get your 7480 forms in to the FAA asap and check with
your state dept of aviation. It's free.

I just successfully went through a town referendum vote and lots of media
coverage to try to shut down my helipad. If your paperwork has been submitted
you should be grandfathered regardless of any zoning restrictions your town or
neighbors try to put in place.

Took a little while to get used to watching the airspeed go below the green arc
but those egg beaters sure are fun.
