I'd be interested in one. Do you have a phone number, or website for them. KR>Tailwheel Spring for Aviation Products Tailwheel
Bob Wood wrote: "I just bought a tail wheel just like yours from Aviation Products Inc. but haven't been able to locate a tail spring for it. Where did you get yours?" My original tailspring was a quarter inch thick piece of spring steel that I believe was 1.5" wide. It wasn't stiff enough, and I had some good dents in the bottom of my rudder to prove it. I added a "leaf" of 1/8" thick 4130 strap on top, and that helped, but it still needed more. Then Larry Flesner sent me the remaining piece of a leaf spring that he made his from, and I think it was 1.75" wide and 5/16" thick. I had to spend a few minutes grinding the end down to 1.5" to fit the tailwheel base, but it has worked flawlessly ever since. All of these widths may be off a quarter inch, but the plane's at the airport and I'm not. I think maybe it was Jack Cooper who pointed out that some Chrysler minivans had composite springs that were easy to work with and just the right size, so there is almost surely a large supply of exactly what you need in a junkyard nearby. I know in Birmingham Alabama there's a business that does nothing but custom leaf springs...replacements and stiffer aftermarket springs. Mark Langford ML at N56ML.com website at http://www.N56ML.com
KR> Tailwheel Spring for Aviation Products Tailwheel
I did not use any of the existing tail spring, the entire unit is built of fiberglass. It is bolted to the fuselage just like the metal spring was, in exactly the same place. I just had to use bolts that were a little longer. I would not use Carbon Fiber as it is more brittle and what you want is something that can give with the shock. I put Duct Tape on the board and it still stuck a little. I made it wider than I knew I would need and cut it to size and shape. You will notice in one of the first pics, that there is another "leaf" added to the tail part of the spring unit. That is because the initial layup that I did, and what is documented, was not strong enough to keep the bend to a minimum when I pushed down hard on the tail part of the turtle deck. That "leaf" is just about as thick as the first layup. Notice on the 4th and 5th pic, that the vertical part of the wheel unit, is "vertical". Avery will tell you that, in fact, you want to make the vertical part, lean a little aft at the top, and not to have the wheel "trail", as you might think it should. I tried to get mine as they said, but "vertical", was the best I could do. I am very happy with the performance of this spring and am glad to recommend it to anyone. Heath - Lexington, SC -Original Message- Thanks Dan. Looks good. A couple of questions: Did you use the part you cut off from the main spring to add to the tail of the spring and did you bolt it on instead of laminating it? Also would using some carbon fiber cloth strengthen it enough so you could make it lighter or at least not have to add that last part? Also, what did you use to keep the lay up from sticking to the forming board?

Do they have a website? KR> US Weather map
FYI - For those of you who haven't seen this weather map - it's a pretty neat tool to quickly see aviation weather anywhere in the US. Merely scrolling over the dots and + signs will give you most info you need, but double-clicking on them will give more details, like winds aloft, etc. Ed Janssen http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/zoa/mwmap3.php?map=usa
KR> To Turbo or not to Turbo that is the Question
I had this prop on an VW 2100 and and the bigger version on the Sub 81. The small prop hit a wall at 140 mph. The Sub did not have enough HP to spine the big 1. The RV guys tried the large one and a couple of them lost blades and crashed. The folks at Ivo were VERY nice about taking the small one back. I did not buy the big one direct from them. I know if you tell them it is going on a KR with a VW they will not sell it to you. --- On Tue, 1/4/11, Jose Fuentes wrote: From: Jose Fuentes Subject: Re: KR> To Turbo or not to Turbo that is the Question To: "KRnet" List-Post: krnet@list.krnet.org Date: Tuesday, January 4, 2011, 9:35 AM That's very true, it does make sense to have in in-flight adjustable prop. That way it can be adjusted, it's a good point. I've seen this one as a thought but heard a few bad things about it, but the bad things were based on years ago issues, would a company still sell something if they hadn't worked out those issues (maybe I'm naive)? http://www.ivoprop.com/inflightmediummodel.htm Though not your standard type adjustable prop but lighter maybe? Anyways good point and another item to think about when going turbo.
