KR> New W&B for Black Bird

2011-05-16 Thread Dan Heath
Sorry about that. I did not realize that KR Net was going to butcher it up
that bad.

The net of it is that I now have 21.2 gallons of fuel in the wings and with
me and full fuel on board, I am just under .7" inside the aft CG limit. The
plane now weighs 720# empty. So, I guess with the Corvair it will be around
760 or so. It will be interesting to find out.

In case you are interested, this is the new W&B for the Black Bird, with
full fuel.

*Note - The CG number is adjusted to 8 inches aft of the leading edge of the
wing, which is the most forward CG allowed which would show as zero.

So, you can see that if I fly it with full fuel, I will be getting close to
the aft CG limit, but this is a very good thing for being able to get the CG
right with the heavier Corvair engine. I was concerned that the CG would go
too far forward, but this indicates to me, that it should come in quite
good.

I tried to start it today, but it would not fire. I just gave it a shot
with no attempt to diagnose. Tomorrow, I will see if the fuel is being
pumped from the tanks. It has to be siphoned quite a way up hill to get to
the carb.

Hi guys
Regarding the removeable turtledecks, I am in the process of changing from a
standard KR bubble canopy to a dragonfly canopy and will probably have to
make a new forward deck. My rear deck has not yet been attached to the
fuselage. I like the idea of having the decks removeable but am concerned
with water ingress when the plane stands outside in the rain. Can those with
removeable decks comment on this and how it was overcome please.

Hey guys,
I am looking for the extension that goes on the back of the harmonic balancer

any left?  Does anybody else have one left over?  Or alternative suggestions?
Will check WW's site in the interim.  Thanks.

KR> Re: Removable Turtle Deck

2011-05-16 Thread Teate, Stephen

"I like the idea of having the decks removeable but am concerned
with water ingress when the plane stands outside in the rain."

Hello Dene,

Like others have done, the entire top of my airplane is easily removable. I
made my front and aft turtle decks the same way you make a lot of
foam/fiberglass parts. Your start with a template at both ends, put foam
between the templates, sand to shape and glass. The first thing I did was get
my canopy mounted the way I wanted it on the fuselage. I then made the frame
for the canopy and glassed the canopy to the frame. I made the aft part of my
canopy frame "structural" with the addition of a very deep rib. I put several
layers of glass in this area and it forms my roll bar. Now add the fire wall up
front and a small half circle template at the leading edge of your vertical
stabilizer and you have both templates for the front and rear turtle decks. To
avoid a very "angular" look I put about a one inch spacer over the aft edge of
my canopy, and then sanded to that spacer. I then removed this spacer and
sanded down to the edge of the canopy transitioning a nice radius into the
original profile of the rear turtle deck. This worked out real well and I am
very happy with the result and you end up with a perfectly fitting turtle deck
no matter how you built your fuselage.

To get a good seal at my top longerons I first ran a strip of duct tape the
full length of my aft fuselage and rolled it over and down both sides of the
fuselage. Using two inch duct tape will give your at least one inch of tape on
the vertical sides. With the foam in place I first took a two inch wide tape of
fiberglass and extended it 1/4" down the side of the fuselage onto the duct
tape and let the rest overlap onto the foam. I then glassed the rest of the
turtle deck with KR cloth per plans but also allowed this to extend down the
1/4". Be sure you clean up any "runs" of epoxy that make it all the way down
the duct tape and onto the fuselage sides. If not, it will be harder to remove.
Once cured use a putty knife under one edge and work your way down the fuselage
and the glass will pop off the tape.

Now turn it over and dig out the inside to suit your desire and glass the
inside. I started with 6" slabs of foam and sanded out the inside to a depth of
about two inches. I also left a vertical rib of about four inches that runs the
entire length right down the center. If you dig out much more foam than this I
would suggest that you reinstall the turtle deck on the fuselage to cure so
that it maintains the shape you want. Once the inside and outside have been
glassed you can them come back and glass the surface that will be in contact
with the top of the top longerons and the two ends. I put a "joggle" in the
front of my turtle deck where my canopy will overlap when closed.

The final result is a custom made part that fits your fuselage perfectly, minus
the thickness of a piece of duct tape, and will seal out any chance of rain
entering your fuselage in this area.

I saw one or two post to your question and one suggested you install
the engine and do a W &B to determine location. I see no point in
building two engine mounts. Do a complete W&B series without the
engine, complete with fuel and pilot and passenger, and then
determine the engine location using paper and pencil. Use the center
of mass of the engine for the moment arm and don't forget the weight
and arm of the mount, cowl, prop, spinner, battery, etc. The front
two or three inches of the CG range would be a good target with pilot
and fuel if adding a passenger doesn't move the CG beyond the aft limit.

KR> Calibrating fuel with Dynon and Capacitance probes

2011-05-16 Thread Paul & Karen Smith

Yes, first calibrate the probe in accordance with manufacturers instructions to
get 0 -5v dc.

Then Select the capacitive type on the Dynon.

Then calibrate Dynon ... the D-180 manual P6.5
.
Begin with empty tanks and be ready to fill them to capacity with an accurate
way of adding fuel
in defined increments (i.e. a standard gas pump gauge). Orient your plane into
level flight
attitude, and repeat the following steps for each tank you wish to calibrate.
EMS Configuration 6-6 FlightDEK-D180 Installation Guide
Use the DOWN? or UP? buttons to select the tank that you wish to calibrate, and
press SEL?.
Enter the approximate number of gallons or liters the tank can hold. It is not
necessary to be
precise. This number is only used to determine reasonable fuel addition
increments in the next
steps. Press NEXT. Once you have confirmed that the tank you are calibrating is
empty, press
START. Follow the on-screen instructions until the completion of your fuel
calibration.
At the completion of your fuel level calibration, the FlightDEK-D180 will
present you with a
table of values in the format ?[pour #]: [mV] [gallons]?. Ensure that the mV
values (just after the
colon) change throughout the range of pours.

Hope this helps

Both of my decks are removable and I don't believe a single drop of water
has ever made it through that gap. I didn't go to any huge effort to
prevent a gap, it's just the way I did it doesn't leave a gap. And when you
think about it, the top surface of the top longeron slopes outward slightly
under the forward deck due to the "banana boat" effect, so that would help
shed water anyway. I guess it also helps that my canopy comes off along
with the front deck (that's the only thing it's attached to, other than the
latches), so there's no extra gap up there due to the removable deck
feature.

If you wanted absolute "monsoon" capabilility, a slight downward overhang of
the glass from the decks could guarantee no water ingress from the side.
Water ingress from above would be due to something other than the removable
feature, but I haven't found that to be a problem.
