Excellent post with a lot of great info to consider. It seems modifications
often add weight and risk. Thank you, Matt.

KR> spar analysis (Matt Elder)

2011-10-16 Thread Ed
Hi Matt
I would really like to hear any advise you might have for someone
considering a "bent" center spar . I was going to purchase new spruce stock
possibly 1/4" thick to laminate them. Also any ideas for dealing with the
"spring back" effect that happens when a bent lamination is removed from the
clamps?Ed

KR> WING SPAR WOOD BENDING

2011-10-16 Thread Larry Howell
Some people make a way to heat the wood that they want to bend. The heat
softens the sap/resin in the wood so there is probably not much if any spring
back if the softened wood is placed into a jig and left for the sap/resin to
reharden or normalize.
I have seen photos of some vertical ovens that have been made. They were just
simply a tall pipe or can sitting above a pot with steaming water where the
rising steam heats the wood and softens the resin in it. Do some looking
around on the Internet and I am sure you will find information on this. The
ones I have seen were used to soften 1/4"x 1/2" spruce sticks for easy bending
the top and bottom sticks for placement into wing rib jigs for the Wittman
Tailwind wings. The Tailwind wing uses made up ribs that are placed onto the
wing spars then the whole wing surface is covered with thin plywood and now
days most builders put a thin layer of fiberglass cloth over that to seal the
plywood.

KR> Steam Bending Wood

Here below is a link to steam bending wood. I typed into Google search "how to
heat bend wood"
Lots of links came up.

KR> WING SPAR WOOD BENDING

2011-10-16 Thread Brant Hollensbe

Steam quickly heats and moistens the fibers in wood so it may be bent with
out cracking. Heating the resin or sap has nothing to do with the process.

Wood may also be bent by soaking in water for a few days... Native Americans
built their canoes this way. Unfortunately, the excessive water sometimes
weakens or damages the wood.

Another popular method of wood bending is to cut the wood into thin strips
and glue the layers together while been held in the desired shape by a
clamping jig.

I have always noticed a little spring back after making a piece so I over
compensate the bend by building the clamping jig to make a slightly sharper
bend than needed.

KR> Great Saturday, representing KR

2011-10-16 Thread Jeff York
I just wanted to report that I had a fantastic Saturday and I hope represented
the KR aircraft and the KRnet to my best. Yesterday I participated in the
AirFest airshow when it came to my airport, Georgetown Scott County airport in
Georgetown Kentucky.

A plug for my airport, it received the airport of the year award from the FAA.

There were several war birds including a Folke Wolf and a Chinese fighter
trainer and others. B 17 rides and fly by's, antiques, modern aircraft,
parachute jumpers demonstrations and more. Several thousand people were on hand
to watch a great show.

What was so special to me was that I won two first place awards for Best
Overall Experimental and Best instrument panel. I must admit, it was
interesting, unexpected and surprising to see a crowd around my plane all day.
Eventually, I was asked to park my plane in front of the main stage for the
rest of the show and to come on stage to speak to the crowd about my plane and
experimental airplanes. I was honored to win awards because there were so many
beautiful planes. I was also honored to represent the KR group and speak about
how this group is so helpful and instrumental in the success of the KR
aircraft. It was a day filled with a lot of people asking questions and they
all wanted to know all they could about my interesting little airplane. I must
admit, it was interesting, unexpected and surprising to see a crowd around my
plane all day. On top of the awards and speaking to the crowd and being
interviewed by radio and TV and being able to answer
questions from so many people, especially the younger folks just getting
interested in aviation. At times I felt like a sales representative for KR
aircraft. Funny.

I am proud to be a part of this great group and I hope I represented you all
very well. I want to continue to give credit to so many of those in this group
who have done so much. I want to name names but I am afraid I would leave out
some names that have given so much to this group. I will try to post up some
pictures for you all to see.

KR> Encapsulating

Hey gang, I'm working on a new wood project that won't take to the air but it
should fly across the water.anyway, I need to encapsulate all the frames
and such. What are the current thoughts on how to thin epoxy to get a good
flow?

I've heard you can mix rubbing achohal with it and the achohal will
evaporate out after you have spread it. You might test that on something
first.

You might want to talk to some of the people in the home made trimaran
community. They have had mixed results using total encapsulation.

KR> torque wrenches

2011-10-16 Thread phil brookman
Believing a torque wrench can have some serious consequences .
i just believed one and set head torque on an engine to find i had over torqued
it .
strippped one crankcase thread completly out in flight =  3 hrs  and  helicoil
sorted that  .
loss of compression coming out of head seal in flight ...

other studs also giving me grief ,,,in all about 8 hrs work  but could also
have brought me down =  safety issues
We tested a brand new one right out the box and that was miles out ...
So check them all
