Here's a great list of airfoils. My plans aren't current to check against but
the AS foils are here.

Thanks. This was from the 4/11/75 revised plan sheet backside, from
which my plane was built. I dug into the KR Newsletters and saw a lot of
corrections which needed to be made, (including the 3 part 48 inch rib)
and MAY have been made on my KR (or may not..I'm going hunting!). I also
notice that on the 2 parts of the OUTBOARD template, the reference line
(which appears to be the chord line) didn't align  between the sections
(though THAT was never noted in the KR Newsletters). So for the
experience,  I'm going to draw up a new set of templates from the
coordinates. I'm also going to transcribe the corrections from the KR
Newsletter to my plan set.  I have a set of  newer plans and workbook,
but I'll walk through this just to see if they'll line up with the newer
plans. If they do, then I'll know i understand it completely. Thanks for
the info Jim, and thank GOD for the KR newsletters!

Hey fellow kr-netters,

I just pulled N54PB out of the garage and started her up.  This is the first
time I have run the engine in about 3months,  she started on the first try and
ran like a dream.  Ran her for about eighteen minutes, checking pressures,
temperatures, rpm, cylinder head and exhaust temperatures along with manifold
pressure.  Everything looks good.

I plan on doing a weight and balance on her sometime this week and then out to
the dry lake for some high speed taxi tests, (love these dry lakes in southern
Nevada).  By the way, the weather here is forecast to be in the mid 60's this
week, all you northern flyers eat your heart out.

Regards and happy/safe flying to all.

The guy in the hanger next to me lost his prop and front hub while flying
his VW engine this summer resulting in a crash in a farm field. The crank
broke cleanly in half at the front bearing just as the Corvairs were doing.

KR> Fwd: Cranks and flywheels

2011-12-29 Thread Phillip E. Harrison
Dan,
Are you saying there is a NEW crank for the Corvair out there? Do
you (anyone) know what the availability and or cost of one of Brady's/
Magnificent Machine produced cranks is? Is it a new casting or a forged
crank?

I would not be so quick to jump to conclusions. There are many things that
could have played a part in this and no one will know without running a
complete analysis on the damage. And, then, we may still never know. The
front bearing is a definite improvement and I would not fly a Corvair engine
without one, at least on a high performance plane. As for the flywheel,
does the 14# harmonic balancer combined with a prop count for anything
toward a flywheel? I don't know.

Someone suggested that someone out there should start making cranks. Well,
someone did. Brady at Magnificent Machine produced some and I think at
least one is currently in use. They also eliminated the harmonic balancer.
I was talking to Joe at Revmaster one day about the new engine he was
designing. He told me that he was getting a crank custom made for his new
engine and that the investment would end up being around a million dollars.
Any takers?

VW cranks used to break until they did the same things that the Corvair
builders are now doing. I have flown VWs with no extra bearing and with the
so called front bearing like the Force One hub on the Great Plains. I never
had a crank break. I wonder how many hours PF Beck has on his Corvair
powered Piet with no front bearing and no broken cranks?

Based on the experiences of those who've been there, it seems the big fifth
bearing now being implemented by Corvair builders moderates but doesn't
completely eliminate the effect of the crank bending forces imposed by the
prop

KR> Reading related to Cranks and flywheels

2011-12-29 Thread Charles Smiith
Seems to me that all of the ?solutions? just transfers the problem away from
the crankshaft, dosen?t make it go away. Whatever the propeller is connected
to just has to be strong enough to never break. So the ultimate solution seems
to be a stronger crankshaft to withstand the propeller vibrations. Can the
Corvair crankcase bearing be bored out for a bigger journal? And can the
crankshaft be modified to a larger journal? I know they can rebuild them by
building up the journal with an electric welder and regrinding it.

KR> New Cranks?

2011-12-29 Thread Dan Heath
Sorry for the mis-leading information in my post. I should have followed
that sentence with "However, he is now out of business".

I believe that Steve Makish is the one or one of the persons who has one of
his cranks.

I also have it on very good authority that all of the cranks used in the
Corvair conversions are forged.
