KR> Re: VW engine baffles

2012-01-14 Thread Sid Wood
I used the stock VW cooling shrouds ($23 at Performance VW store). These
shrouds fit any size VW engine. I made a fiberglass duct for each side
from the cowl front to each shroud. Be sure to install the Cool Tins also.
My thinking is: If it has worked for millions of VW Beetles, it ought to
work for my VW engine installation. Ground runs keep about 350 degrees F on
all four cylinders. Have not flown yet; your results may vary.

KR> Sean, 90 degree sides

2012-01-14 Thread dodgedar...@verizon.net
Two options as I see it:
a) Modify the tailpost to meet the vertical sides, OR
b) Build and set the tailpost properly, then let the lower longeron "adjust"
itself over the last couple of bays.h
Personally, I don't think the ply will have any difficulty in following the
slight change in contour as it will be conical, and not a compound curve.
You can test this while on the build table. Install your upper spreaders, then
before permantly installing the lower spreaders use blocks on the table to
spring the longeron against. Fit a sheet of ply up against the side, hold in
place with spring clamps and look for any areas that don't lay flat.

I'm guessing you are talking about the fly-in at Frasca Field at
Champaign, Illinois. Langford and I flew up there several years
ago. Don't know if they are still having it or not but seems like it
was in the month of June or there about. You might contact someone

It has come time for me to give up on my dreams of completing my KR-2. So
now I need to find a new home for her. Hopefully one who will enjoy
completing the build process and letting her take to the air...

The boat portion of the fuselage is completed as well as the wing stubs.
She sits on original RR landing gear. Tail features are built and installed.
I have the original engine cowling as well as the original canopy and
frame. They have not been installed at this time.

I also have two (2) corvair engines number correct per WW info. Both
motors are complete. One is in the process of being torn down.

Send all inquires to Paul @ _kr1pilot@hotmail.com_

The KR-2 is located in Central Florida. Lakeland area.

For More information The aircraft has and will continue to be placed on

Hi Larry,
I was just looking at the KR gathering page, thinking back to my
childhood and my dad who is now passed. I see you have photos from
the fly-ins that date back to 1986. I am, of course, assuming that
you are the guy that owns those photos and posted them to the website.
I was curious if you had any photos from prior fly-in's? My dad went
to a fly-in, not sure if it was in 81 or 82 but I do know that it was
in Oshkosh. Does that ring a bell to you? His name was Norman Negus
and he flew a bright canary yellow KR2. If by any chance you have any
photos from that fly in or know anyone that was there that might have
some, I would just absolutely love to have them. I don't have any
photos of my dad's plane and almost all of our family photos from
that time period were destroyed. When I came across your website, it
just clicked to me that someone else might have a photo of my dad's
gorgeous plane that he worked so incredibly hard to build.

I really haven't worked on my project in 4 years now. It's covered in dust

It's a KR2s - with a turbo charged Subaru EA81 - belly mounted radiator
NSI cam, twin ignition (runs pretty good, last time I checked)
90% complete 90% to go
I'm hoping to get back to work on it.
Which is why I'm re-subscribing to the list.

2012-01-14 Thread Dave_A
Another 'bit' from my last week's work on the plane:

One tip of the wood prop has about a 3" crack in it going through all
but the last outer ply 'skin' on the back of the prop.

It's a 53" prop, on an 1835 (presumably HAPI) VW.

1) Is repairing such a crack safe/economical, and if so, how does one go
about doing it?

2) What is the 'normal' range of prop dimensions for a KR-2 with an
1835? Eg, how do I determine what to replace this prop with, if fixing
it is out the window?

We'd probably need a picture of it to know for sure, but I know people
who've epoxied a missing chunk (matched in size) in place with T-88 and it
worked fine. It's certainly way more economical than buying another prop!

>>2) What is the 'normal' range of prop dimensions for a KR-2 with an

See http://www.krnet.org/kr-info.html for some good prop info vs engine
size. Keep in mind that one prop maker's pitch isn't the same as another,
but you should figure that out from the chart as well.

KR> Fly In

2012-01-14 Thread Ed Janssen
Dan,

Yes, Paul Poberezny started the SAA (Sport Aviation Association) sometime
around 1999, I think, and published a magazine called "To Fly". His
friend, Rudy Frasca, close friend of Poberezny's, offered his airport,
Frasca Field, Urbana, IL, to hold Fly-Ins for the organization, a
grass-roots aviation event. The organization didn't last but a few years,
perhaps due to inadequate funding. Even though SAA folded, Rudy offered to
continue having a fly-in around the 2nd weekend in June. He (actually his
son) has continued to send letters of invitation to former members each year
since. Last year, I believe, it was held June 11th and 12th. Rudy has a
very interesting small museum of airplanes, engines, etc. on the field as
well as a modern factory that makes simulators. He usually offers tours of
the factory during the Fly-In. One year Mark Langford and Mark Jones flew
their KRs to the fly-in and gave a short seminar on KR building. William
Wynne was also there at least one year to give a seminar on Corvair engines.
