KR> Jon Kimmel Project
Wow Jon, Is that the much traveled Dr. Dean, Mark Jones, Eric Pitts, and apparently now Jon Kimmel KR Project? Glad to see the project is progressing. Hope to see it flying one day soon. -Jeff Scott Los Alamos, NM > Sent: Friday, June 13, 2014 at 10:29 AM > From: "jon kimmel via KRnet" > > You wrote Unless I'm mistaken, the "new wings" are only a new airfoil > design optimized for the KR's performance envelope. KR> Weight & Balance
I'm trying to remember, but I think the typical flight-induced stress failures almost always occur in the tail attach area, not the wings. It is difficult to stress the wings to yield without stalling them. Therefore, the stronger wings would demand stronger empennage and engine mount too. regards, Peter On mine, the chords are also thicker giving even more increase.

I told him if he ever wants to sell it that I want to buy it back and he agreed to that. At lease that is what I remember. Right Eric? Yes Mark you get first crack at it, start saving! ? Eric Pitts Terre Haute, Ind. "Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO HOO what a ride!"

"unless of course you're Mark Langford" Since it is Friday I have to add my shot to this. When I was doing my preliminary weight and balance I went searching for information. As usual I ended up on Mark's project where he has a very nice table that lists his weights and moments. I didn't look real close but just printed it and took it home. The next morning I went looking for the pilot weight without really looking at the left side of the table where "Pilot" is actually labled. Anyway it seemed like some time had passed and I couldn't find anything that resembled a pilot weight. Finally I found pilot and looked across the line and still didn't see a normal pilot weight. I then remember holding my left finger on the Pilot line and my right finger on the weight line and moving across and down until I got to 145 pounds. I said out loud "145 pounds, what the heck is that". I was born 145 pounds! Stephen "225" Teate Paradise, Texas The information in this email is confidential and may be legally privileged. You wrote Unless I'm mistaken, the "new wings" are only a new airfoil design optimized for the KR's performance envelope. Nothing was done to change the wing spars, which are the structural part that transfer the loads. That is true for the as5046. The as5048 is inherently stronger since the spars are taller and the chords are further apart. On mine, the chords are also thicker giving even more increase. https://sites.google.com/site/mykr2stretch/ https://sites.google.com/site/mykr2stretch/parts-for-sale

Paul wrote- > I wish we could come up with a new max weight with the new wings. Unless I'm mistaken, the "new wings" are only a new airfoil design optimized for the KR's performance envelope. Nothing was done to change the wing spars, which are the structural part that transfer the loads. In fact, I believe one of the design criteria for the new wing was that it would be possible to build to the AS504x airfoil using the same spars and WAFs as with the RAF48. That being the case, using the new wings do not change the allowable loadings or the original structural calculations that determined the design maximum gross. Your own maximum gross may vary from design based on how you build the airplane or how you elect to test fly it.
