KR> Ballast for KR-2
At the mention of putting 46 pounds ballast in the engine compartment to get rid of the tail heavy and unstable condition, I have had several inquiries. I posted this info several months ago. Stu Robinson stated that the center of lift may be 2 inches further forward than it should be for the RAF-48 airfoil on the KR-2. That prompted the development of a new airfoil and the KR-2S supplement. My flight observations with several ballast installations along with numerous weight and balance measurements confirms Stu's statement. Setting the wing back 2 inches on my KR-2 would likely cure the problem, but that is not practical now. Working the W spread sheet, I came up with 46 pounds at the engine location. These are 11 separate weights mounted at as many different locations. (Using a Corvair instead of the present 2180 VW could be a solution also.) Just to throw a little more fuel on the fire, Is there anyone now still wanting to build a KR-2 instead of a KR-2S? Sid Wood Tri-gear KR-2 N6242 Mechanicsville, MD, USA

Having asked the major questions here, and saved the much appreciated replies, and researched and cataloged the relevant source and building info, I am now trying to decide whether to restore my Avid Flyer to airworthy, or sell it as is (leaning to restoring it), and looking for a new house with room for a KR1 project (pref 2 car 20x20 garage sized space, or a basement). Wish I could accelerate the process but, first things first for successful outcome. After all the KR could take well over a month to build lol

I am putting my KR-2 back together after re-locating the main gear, modifying the elevator trim tab control, re-working the carb to put in a new throttle control and installing 46 pounds of ballast in the engine compartment. All the while doing an annual condition inspection due in April. This Spring will be back flying the KR-2 for Phase I testing. Meanwhile flying a rented Cessna 150. Yesterday?s flight was around the John Day valley. I saw 178mph on the GPS; not level flight but shallow power on dissent over a friend?s place (I keep at least 1000? between me and the ground). About 140mph is my cruise at less than full throttle, with most of my flying at 5,000 to 7,000 feet above sea level. Thought I was going to have to give it up, 3rd class physical in September, new doctor picked up a heart murmur and failed me on my hearing test. At the FAA?s request I had to have an echo cardiogram and hearing test, passed with flying colors. Didn?t hear back from FAA . Wife called them in early February, the young sweet lady who answered said ?he is cleared to fly?. The FAA mailed my Medical Certificate on December 4th, but was returned ?undeliverable?; mailed to my street address instead of my post office box! So going on my 78th year on earth all is well. I am using an electronic power panel that has electronic breakers. When circuit trips, the electronic breaker resets when the power is switched off. The power switches are at the lower left of my panel; an easy reach right next to the throttle. The electronic breakers have no life-limiting number of cycles, unlike mechanical circuit breakers. I have one 35 amp mechanical circuit breaker located adjacent to the power panel for the 20 amp Diehl alternator on the VW engine. Sid Wood Tri-gear KR-2 N6242 Mechanicsville, MD, USA -- The only circuit breaker accessable to the pilot is the fuel pump. It is located just below the throttle adjacent to the fuel pump switches. This is the only item I have to have to stay aloft. There are three pumps (L, R, & a common for either). I will be using Pmags, so if I have partial electrical meltdown, the fuel pump will be my only item of concern, and it is powered from the E bus. If one pump pops the circuit breaker, I can isolate, reset, and fire up another pump. The rest of the fuses will not be replaced in flight. Up in the air is no place for playing mechanic.
