KR> My Update
Hi All, I have survived yet another brutal Wisconsin winter. The weather here finally turned and the temps once again are above freezing. I managed to get my hanger door open two weeks ago and since then I have made three flights in my KR. All flights were flawless and more than a yeeehaaa can express. What a good feeling to get back in the air. This is my first post on my new laptop as I have just finished setting it up and transferred everything over from my old laptop. My 16 year old son took his first flight lesson two days ago and he is stoked about flying. I have started my annual inspection on my KR and should have it completed within the week. We are flying down to Charlotte, NC on April 18 and will be spending a week in the Carolina's. This is a two-fold trip. It is part vacation and part scoping the area for determining where we want to move to. Yes, we have decided to move back south and are pretty sure it will be somewhere near Charlotte. KR> Whats everybody doing...
Progress has been slow on my project but I figured I should join in on the conversation. I've done a little work in between deployments. My short block corvair is complete and I just got my landing gear from nvaero. I've finally mustered up the courage to mount the wafs and haven't messed up so far. My goal is to have the plane on gear and have a running engine by the end of the year. Happy building everyone. Chris Pryce

I finally finished up installation of the new axles, brakes, wheels, and tires on N891JF last night, and man does it now have brakes! For the first time, a full-power runup is no problem at all. That was a real safety issue for me. I owe Riley Collins for the great deal he gave me on these brakes, which are probably 30 years old, but unused until now. I was able to nail the alignment at 0.58 degrees of toe-in, which is "close enough for KR work". 0.50 degrees was the goal, but I'm quite happy with 0.58. The landings are far less exciting now. And I love being able to lock one wheel and pivot about that wheel, which has been impossible in N891JF until now. I got lazy regarding making shims, and just milled the mounting flanges of the axles to the correct angle. I fretted over doing that for a while, but after a beer one night this week, I clamped them in them in the vise at the correct angle using a smart-level, and milled the matings flanges off to what I measured with no shims. That was far easier and more accurate than making shims. And rather than reinstalling the 6.5 ounce shims that were there, I removed some aluminum instead, saving almost a half a pound on shims alone. Given that I haven't been able to fly it for 5 weeks, I flew up to Larry Flesner's place for a "hundred dollar BBQ sandwich" today. Actually it was only $79 in fuel, and Larry bought the lunch, so I got off easy. The cool thing is crossing three states in under two hours just to go to lunch and visit with a buddy, and then getting back home in plenty of time for dinner. I'd have gotten better fuel mileage, but the absence of wheel pants reminded me what a huge impact to performance and efficiency that is! Cruise speed at the same RPM dropped from about 148mph to about 135mph, and climbout was surprisingly handicapped. Still, I shouldn't complain about 135mph at 3.4 gph, which is 39.7 mpg...far better than my GTI gets, twice as fast, and straight-line travel. Lack of wheel pants has other ramifications, such as glide range. I decided on the way back that I wasn't going to fly it anymore until I remedy that. Tonight I played around with wheel pants, and discovered that there's a real possibility that Jim's "sexy wheel pants" will fit right back over these brakes! That's a huge time-saver, and will ensure that I can fly to Sun-N-Fun in a month or so and not have to lumber all the way down and back. I'll update this and document the latest progress shortly, but a beginning on the "new gear" story is at the bottom half of http://www.n56ml.com/n891jf/brakes/index.html#matco. KR> KR2 for sale
I saw this on Barnstormers: http://www.barnstormers.com/cat.php?mode=search hit "search" hit "experimental" hit "KR aircraft" There is a KR2S project for sale in the San Diego area for $5200 I talked with the owner Dean Randolph and went over to see the stuff. He has a pretty complete kit there (no engine or instruments) but has lots of the really good parts: wing skins http://www.nvaero.com/products/Diehl-Wing-Skin-Kit.html landing gear http://www.nvaero.com/diehl-complete-tri-gear-kit-with-wheel-pants-fairings/ $2800 what appears to be "Grove" landing gear legs: http://www.pilotshop.com/catalog/lgpages/groveLandinggears.php?gclid=CLKEipvkusQCFQenaQodpx4AAQ canopy around $450? Header tank $ 2 wing tanks $??? The fuselage could use a lot of TLC but has all of the metal parts built and installed (very nice workmanship) This appears to be worth a lot to the right person Give him a call Bill Masquelier

Well, since you asked. I just finished up my lycoming engine mount Jig. The 4130 will be here next weekend and I can tack weld it and get it off to the welder. In the mean time my engine is in a box at Aero Engine waiting on the main bearings. So in 2 weeks we will put the lower end together and if I am really lucky I will be hanging the engine on the firewall by May 1st. This in the most progress I have made in 2 years. Next is that front deck I started last year and mount the panel. Then it's off to the tail or the left wing, I haven't decided yet. Hope to have this plane mostly done by late 2016 so I can start test flying in 2017. Gotta have goals. KR> Sid's ballast
Hi Sid 46 lbs of ballast.are you sure? Seems like a hell of a lot :-). Did an authorised weight and balance person come up with that amount? If not, please get one to double check your calcs to be safe. I'm amazed you managed to fly earlier if it was that heavy in the tail at the time. All the best.
