KR> Gathering photos

2015-09-14 Thread David Mullins
Thanks for the Compliment.

I was the one who set up the group photoshoot with the help of Chris Collins
(MVN Manager) for getting the Bucket Truck.

I hold an Associate of Science Degree in Photography and have been
photographing for about 35 years. For more of my photos visit here:

Dan; I believe the legs are actually for a Cougar, the Grumman twin. Gross on a
Cougar will be quite a bit higher than for the AA-5, and your plan should work
well. Peter

KR> two gathering sites

2015-09-14 Thread Jeff Scott
I really wouldn't mind managing the KR Gathering web site for the group. I
would like to get the KRGathering.org domain name back, but don't know if it's
available yet. Probably the biggest problem for me to set it up is to zip up
and download all the photos from the previous gatherings currently found on
Steve's site . That's probably why those links are not
functioning on John's Gathering web site. It is very tedious to download all
photos individually to recreate the site.

But if you're looking for a volunteer, I would be willing to set up and manage
the Site.

On ebay

These are from Fletch Air in Comfort, TX. I've dealt with these guys before
and found them to be decent people. I bought the O-320 for my SuperCub there.
They gave me two used Grumman Cheetah exhausts that I was able to modify to use
as the exhaust on my SuperCub. Very reasonably priced and good people to deal
with.

It appears that these are old inventory that is in need of recertification to
sell for use on a certificated aircraft. But it should be some pretty good
stuff for use on a KR. And the price is right. I was looking at one of the
KRs at the gathering that had the cut down Grumman gear legs on it and was
somewhat surprised at the stiffness of the gear as compared to my 30" Diehl
legs. I think I would be tempted to plain it down a bit more.

KR> Glassing Tiger Gear legs

2015-09-14 Thread Dan Prichard
I did not thin them out. I dialed in the flex I thought would work by reducing
the width. I read of an earlier KR2 which the builder simply cut the leg down
the middle. He said they worked just fine. His KR was a 900 # plane. From that
point I knew my plane was going towards the 1250 # GW range. Applied some
simple math and there you go. The flex and deflection seam right. If I find
them to be to stiff I'll cut the down. If it's not stiff enough I'll use the
other set of legs I bought and start again. At that price you can experiment
some.

KR> why two gathering sites (one not working)

2015-09-14 Thread Chris Prata
they both come up but the archive photos on krgathering.com, steve's site I
guess, are broken links. maybe since we have a working site, steve can just
delete the old gatherings pages and leave the financial, and the other site can
link to it. I found the financial listings very informative and I learned
something about what goes to setting up a gathering from that info.

but previous to my becoming aware of two sites, I thought krgathering.com was
the only one and the old gathering photo links dont work. personally, I like
the domain name krgathering.com for the purpose, easier to remember.

I actually bought krflyer.com intending to chronicle my own hopeful build. but
maybe I will put a simple list of links on it to every resource such as
gathering sites, the archives, nvaero, mark's great site, so there is one place
(at least for me) to go for a quick lookup of something.

It won't be my call but, as a member of the steering committee, my
preference would be to have a site like Bob Lee maintained for us
at krgathering.org where Gathering info, photos, and financial

KR> Oxygen

2015-09-14 Thread laser147 at juno.com
In building my KR-1?, Ken extended the fuselage ahead of the spar and
also extended it to the rear. IIRC it was 6 inches to the front to
accomodate Ken's long legs and to the rear "an extra bay", whatever that
amounts to. It's 15 feet 9 inches in length, so it's not all that long
overall but within that space there is plenty of leg room, enough room
for a removable aluminum header tank of 17 gallons, and a baggage insert
behind the seat which accomodates a remarkable amount of space for all
the stuff I stick back there when travelling. A shoebox-size toolbox
full of carefully-packed tools and spares. My "sailor bag" which I use
when travelling - full of clothes and a Lenovo 14.1" T-420 Thinkpad. A
24 cu.ft. oxygen tank underneath the insert lodged against the corner
where the floor and side comes together. The insert actually rides on
top of the tank and keeps it secure from movement vertically or
laterally. To keep it from movement fore and aft there are foam blocks
to the rear and the wood seatback with it's cut-out for the tank secures
it from forward movement. It impinges upon the available baggage space
hardly at all and I can't rave enough about how nice it is to have oxygen
when travelling. As with my Halo headset, I soon forget the cannula or
headset are attached to my head. The pulse-dose regulator releases
oxygen only when I breathe - unlike the old aviation regulators that
provide constant flow, an extremely wasteful way of doing things. This
pulse-dose regulator by Devilbiss is called a PD-1000.

http://www.devilbisshealthcare.com/products/oxygen-therapy/portable-oxyge
n/pulsedose

I got it new on eBay for about $40. The "E" tank was about $28 (eBay)
with shipping and the cannula was about $10 so having the priceless
benefit of oxygen when flying cost me less than $100 for the whole set
up. I get it filled at dive shops for $12, mas o menos. If no dive
shops are in your area, an alternative way to fill the tank is to get
your AME to write a prescription and take it to a medical supply place.
Other than filling it at an FBO, that is the most expensive way to
re-fill the tank. Another low cost option is a welding shop. It's all
the same quality oxygen. My "E" tank has lasted me from San Diego to
Naples, Florida with various side trips and return to SEE using oxygen
the entire way. There is still oxygen left in the tank after all that
flying, a tribute to the efficiency of the regulator. There are a couple
other pulse-dose regulators out there, probably several, and I think any
of them would work. I'm extremely happy with this PD-1000 though. I put
the cannula in my nose at the same time I put my headset on and don't
turn it off or take it off until I land. Even for those who don't make
a practice of flying at 12.5 and 13.5 as I do, oxygen will help with
mental clarity, vision (especially at night), and prevents the headaches
I used to get when going from sea level to cruise altitudes. It was to
prevent the debilitating headaches I used to get that I originally
installed oxygen in the KR but discovered there are many other benefits.
It really helps prevent fatigue on long trips.

George McHenry had oxygen in his amazing KR as did Jim Evans with his
"Bondo Bomber." Jim, a WWII P-51 pilot used to fly his KR-1 (painted to
look like a P-51) with turbo Revmaster to Oshkosh, south of the border
to Mexico, to Missouri for reunions, to fly-ins far and wide, and did it
all at flight levels above 20 thousand feet. His Maloof was one of the
two or three that failed and prompted Joe Horvath to ground that prop.
>From what I know the failures were only on turbocharged engines, but Joe
would know more about that if you can get him to talk about it. Anyway,
Jim made a successful forced landing when his failed in cruise. You have
lots of landing choices when you're at twenty five thousand feet. I
talked to Jim some years before he passed away. He lived up in the
mountains of Northern California, Trinity County. I didn't ask him about
his oxygen set up but rather wanted to talk to him about his Maloof
experience.

http://tcpilots.org/bios/evans.html

Using oxygen in KR's certainly isn't a new idea. If one intends to do
any travelling in their KR it's a really good one. I've seen studies
showing the benefits of oxygen even when flying at lower altitudes.
Extended flights as low as five thousand feet or thereabouts can benefit
from the use of O2. Installing the tank behind the seat along the
fuselage floor and side junction gets it out of the way and the thin
plastic cannula tube from the regulator to our nose is no bother at all.
I highly recommend this easily-done improvement to our planes and will be
happy to provide additional info and informative links.

KR> two gathering sites

2015-09-14 Thread John Bouyea
I just went through the whole list of Gathering photos at
http://bouyea.net/KRGathering and found only 1990 & 2001 weren't working.
I'll get on that after I make some progress working on my KR today!

Thanks Mike;
I noticed that there are no pictures of the 2014 Gathering.
I can forward the pictures from these two "quick and dirty" slideshows that I
put together immediately after each day of the 2014 gathering should anyone be
willing to post some of them on the web site.

I spoke with Mark about being his backup. Since he has the KRNet.Org domain
name, it makes sense to have a backup admin. Mark, whenever you're ready I
can port the KRGathering stuff to the KRNet.Org site as a set of subpages.
Then accessing that collection will just be more pages on the same site.
Going forward, I volunteer to admin the Gathering content or to pass the
keys to the then-current/ next year's host if they want to do it themselves.

It won't be my call but, as a member of the steering committee, my
preference would be to have a site like Bob Lee maintained for us at
krgathering.org where Gathering info, photos, and financial reports are all
on one conveniently located site. I recall that Mark may have mentioned he
would do it but it would be nice if we had a volunteer to take this monkey
off his back. It requires setting up a web page complete with photos and
Excell spread sheet. Bob Lee did an outstanding job when he had the site
and I gave him a free hat and shirt each year for his efforts and cost. All
I had to do was forward to him the info and it magically appeared on the web
page. Amazing how that worked. Any takers?

KR> Gathering photos

That was sure a great picture. I can't recall who it was that went
through the trouble of getting us all set up for that photo but thank you
again, whoever you are, for having such skill and patience.

Also see Marc Baca's excellent collage at:

https://vimeo.com/50812971

That 2012 Mt. Vernon Gathering was perhaps the last one where we had
what's left of the early KR movers and shakers. Dan Diehl, Jeannette,
Steve & Linda Bennett, Ken Cottle, Glover, Jim Faughn, Dan Heath, Mark
Jones. I know I'm leaving out a few names of the early KR people who
attended that Gathering but my memory isn't serving me well. I think
Tommy Waymack was there along with Virgil Salisbury and others. In that
picture Ken Cottle is standing second row to the right next to the KR-1?
he built that has served me so well. This KR incidentally is the one
used in Dan Diehl's wing skin installation video. It was Dan in fact
that bestowed upon it the designation of "KR-1?". I think that was the
last of the truly great KR Gatherings simply because some of those who
attended that one won't be attending any more.

It's been miserably hot and humid in SoCal since I got back from Oregon
and except for a quick 45 minute trip to Big Bear a few days ago I've
just been hanging out in front of the fans reading old KR newsletters.
It might surprise some to know that Dan Heath and Mark Jones have been
building KR's since 1990 or before. Jones has built at least two and Dan
two, maybe three? I was also amazed to find Russ Barnett's little jewel
of a KR that took top honors in 2012 . . . amazed to find a picture of it
in a newsletter from the early 90's! Eh? Russ brought that KR in on a
trailer to the 40th Anniversery Gathering in 2012 and I thought it was a
new build. It was the most meticulously perfect-in-every-detail KR I'd
ever seen - something to be featured behind glass at Cartier or
Abacrombie & Fitch. I'm wondering now if it's ever flown. It's been
around a lot longer that I thought, that's for sure.

We can sure learn a lot from the old newsletters. There's a newsletter
dated 1991 with an article by Jerry Price who, with one of his pilot sons
Ian, attended McMinnville. We did a prop balance on his Stinson 108.
The history in these newsletters is priceless, as is the KRNET archive
with its truly excellent search function.

FAA requirements as listed in the regs (part 91). If it's magnetic
it should be legal. No required spec's given other than magnetic. I
guess you could still carry the whisky if needed for emergencys. :-)

KR> why two gathering sites (one not working)

2015-09-14 Thread Steve G.
I left KR gathering.com so I could put the financial report there. For the
gathering this year they wanted to take care of their own site. I haven't heard
whether Larry wants to use the.com address or just continue to use the other.

2015-09-14 Thread John Bouyea
KRNet Heads,
Mark & I must have been on the same page & both took most of the week off
after the Gathering. I just got home last night. It looks like there is a
lot of reading to catch up on...

As to the Gathering web site, sorry for the delay on publishing pictures. I
didn't collect a ton of photos but what I have (including Kim & Roger
departing into the Sunday morning sunrise) are on the Gathering web page
referenced by the KRNet.Org web site;
http://bouyea.net/KRGathering/index.html or you can jump directly to it via;
http://bouyea.net/KRGathering/web_pages/gathering2015.htm

If you want to see your images posted, please add to the collection. Email
your photos to me at (kr2s at bouyea.net) and I'll get them posted as soon
as I can.

Thanks to everyone for making the 2015 Gathering a success!
