I haven't use paper in quite a while. By the way, you can't turn over a paper sectional in a KR in flight and not have to recover from an unusual attitude afterwards. Thanks for the help. Here is what I have installed. It took some pondering to find a workaround for the primer but I think I came up with a good system. I haven't plotted a flight plan on paper in over 10 years. I used to use the Voyager program on a PC, now either use the AOPA flight planner via the web or Wingx on the iPad. All of my VFR sectionals, IFR approach charts, etc are via WingX on the iPad, backed up by Wingx on the iPhone, and WingX on an Android tablet. The only paper I have in the plane is the required aircraft documentation and a few sheets of paper on my kneepad for quick note taking. -Dj -- Dj Merrill - N1JOV - EAA Chapter 87 Sportsman 2+2 Builder #7118 N421DJ - http://deej.net/sportsman/ Glastar Flyer N866RH - http://deej.net/glastar/

Last weekend I had my first flight review in 24 years. My instructor was a friend from my EAA chapter.? He?wanted me to plan a 100 mile?XC. So I did. All on my Avare GPS app,?E6B app and my weather app. I thought I did a good job.? Well he didn't like it.? He wanted me to do it the old way.? With a sectional, a plotter and a wiswheel and a phone call to flight service for a weather briefing. ?And god forbid?if I?opened my GPS in flight. After he signed my log book. We talked about it. He said the most pilots still plan on paper and use paper sectionals in flight. My question to you KR pilots is how do you?plan XC's? Do you use programs,?Apps?like foreflight and others or a combination of both.? or?do you just?use?paper? Just curious. I am a pilot for 30 years. I came across the Avare flight app 3 years ago and compared it to a glass cockpit in a Pilatus while flying from Sparta, Mich. to Naples, Fla. The app was right on target. We did not use paper sectionals or plates and filed on the internet. I fly a Tri Pacer with the Avare app with a paper sectional for back up. I do call flight service to check MOA activity but I use My Radar and Accu weather app for expected wx enroute. Aviation weather app for terminal info. at destination. All are free apps. KR> LED Strobe lights
Hi Stefan Whe bought http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/elpages/navstrobeac-ws-45w-1350.php?clickkey=3920 It is not yet installed but I testen it.It looks like nothing, very light but also very bright And very cheap. KR> Strobes
Steve Bennett used to sell a kit that required some solder work and following some instructions that required some trial and error but I managed to put them together. I bought 2 kits for the strobes that were already installed on the wingtips but had never been hooked up. I bought another kit and bought a strobe bulb somewhere and built a "beacon". It's really a strobe, but with those kits Steve sold you could adjust the flash interval so, slowing down the flash makes it look like a beacon. It's mounted on the bottom of the fuselage. You don't have to mount it on the fin in case you'd rather make installation a lot easier and just mount it on the bottom. Or the turtledeck. I forgot my research on this but the regs say you can mount the beacon on either top or bottom. One of those kits went bad so I bought a replacement, for a total of four. The three that are working continue to work well. I think Steve charged thirty or forty dollars for the kit but honestly can't remember. If this LED unit can be had for $50 or so, including the bulbs, I'd say that is a deal. I couldn't find a price on the Spruce site. I have really lousy luck with Spruce's website. Not only could I not find a price, I can't find anything a lot of the time when searching their site. The search function doesn't find things even though you know they carry it and even though you have an exact description. Type in "Slick 4316 magneto harness" and you get the magneto, not the harness. No link to the harness on the Slick magneto page. I never did find the harness the second time. I ended up buying a real Unison harness. The one Spruce sells is an aftermarket jobbie - and probably works as good or better than Unison's. It's so much trouble to get to my magneto though that I just stuck with the correct part. I got so annoyed with Spruce's website I sent them a note and they came back with the explanation that "the search function isn't an exact science." "Slick 4316 magneto harness" seems pretty exact. Maybe it's too exact. I gave up. I just wanted to see how much more I paid buying Unison (Champion these days). I've even used Spruce's part number on occasions and had it not be able to find it's own part, using it's own part number. I think Spruce wants us to call their phone sales staff for some reason. LATER: I just tried again. Same thing. I saw their dropdown choices below the search box had "Slick Magneto Wires" so I thought, "Ah Ha! So _that's_ how you get there!" Nope. "Slick Magneto Wires" takes you to a page with Garmin GX3 system components. I give up again. Back to strobes . . . I've been expecting another failure with my strobe kits so have bought some back-up beacons and strobe flashers on eBay. They're still sitting on my shelf in the hangar since the kits from Great Plains continue to fire. You can find some interesting strobes/flasher things on eBay. Cheap. I bought a very bright 12 volt brand new red rotating beacon for only a few dollars. Yes, it's for a forklift . . . but as Socrates said, "All beacons are fair in the dark."Those LED strobes, if Google is right and these things are just under $50, that's good to know about since I'm sure they use less electricity than normal strobes. Stefan Balatchev wrote: >>I found there are few LED flash strobes available from different sources, any >>of you having experience with that? Are these LED strobes accepted by the FAA >>for experimental aircraft?<< There are some fairly specific rules regarding navigation lights, but not so many with strobes. Jim Weir recently started a series of Kitplanes articles on how to make your own LED nav and strobe lights, and one of the things he said about the strobe regulations are that they are vague enough to drive a truck through. I've never seen an FAA guy with a lumen meter either. But one hard and fast rule is that you have to be able to see them just about all the way around, so one strobe on top may not get you there, although that would be a pretty close second. Don't take my word for it though...seek out the regulations and check. And if the plane is already built and you add them to an experimental, the builder can add them and be night legal with a logbook entry. Mark Langford, Harvest, AL ML "at" N56ML.com www.N56ML.com
