The day was the clearest that we have experienced this year. The air was crisp and cool. The time was right to to experience my childhood dream once again. she fired up and ran great in the fall air. The climb was still exhilarating at a solid 1300'/min at about 100 mph. With no real place to go on a georges evening I headed back to my work site and circled for a bit and then headed in the general direction of NYC and climbed to 7500' while looking at Philly 40 miles to the south and just about able to count the windows in the tall buildings. At about 80 miles from NYC the Manhattan skyline came into view while I was still able to clearly see Philly. While up there I did a test run for true airspeed to check against my numbers from my original testing. I did a little hot air balloon chasing and returned home for another 9 tenths of an hour in the log book. The total time after 4 good years is at 436.2 hours and somewhere around 700 landings. KR> O2 Requirements
The military requirements for oxygen are more strict than the FAA's requirements. Military pilots are younger and in better physical shape that the average civilian pilot. If they need oxygen, it's a good idea for us as well. Each individual is affected differently by the lack of sufficient oxygen. Take a High Altitude Physiology Course such as offered by the FAA in Oklahoma City or The one at the Aviation Physiology Training Unit at Tyndall AFB in Florida. ( See my web page: http://www.awesometrvl.com/high_altitude_flight_physiology.htm ) In a training course, each person gets to see the effects of oxygen deprivation on themselves. Ability to do simple math and reasoning problems, color blindness, loss of coordination, etc.. It will make you a believer in oxygen systems. KR> Re: Oshkosh
I just returned from Oshkosh last night and got on the internet. I drove again this year and stayed for the whole event. Once again it was wonderful. I have always camped at the YMCA because of all the benefits it offers. (Hot Tub, Swimming pool, Ice Skating, Gym, etc.) My KR2 is not flying yet (but getting real close), partially because I have spent a total of 49 days at Oshkosh and another 28 days total driving back and forth. Those 77 days could have put me flying by now. In spite of this I will attend next year. for the full seven days. Oshkosh provides technical information. The forums provide an exchange of information that is invaluable. Mark Langford's talk on KR2s was a must see. I attented many other seminars on building and flying. I visited WW's tent several times. I spent time in the AeroMax tent with Bill. I had several talks with Gus at the Zenith tent, I stoped by the Maxwell Propulsion Systems booth to look at their latest offerings. The social aspect is great. You literally see and talk with people from all over the world. Unlike flyins for specific planes you can meet people flying other types. This year I talked with Willie about KR2s in South Africa and also talked with a gentleman from Israel about his Cozy Mk 4. A friend from Canada joined me for a couple of days. Anyone with children or grandchildren knows Oshkosh is a great place to bring children to inspire them about aviation. Most of us have greying hair. Unless we get younger generations involved in flying, we will be the last generation to enjoy general aviation. I belong to both the EAA and AOPA. Both groups have people in Washington presenting our side of general aviation to the law-makers. It is partially because of the number of members the EAA and AOPA have that law-makers listen to them. Without our support of these orginzations fighting for our rights, we will soon see increased restrictions and fees put into place. I hope to see you all at next years AirVenture 2010.

I am going to test knock sensors on my Corvair. The standard knock sensor is little more than a crystal microphone. It picks up noise and turns it into an analog signal. The amplifier I am using has variable gain and sends the output to a comparator circuit to switch the light on with increased levels of noise. (knock) This is the first step to going an electronic ignition system with automatic ignition retard. I have to finish installing my engine in the plane before I test the setup. KR> What are my Corvair engine cowling options?
Greg; William Wynne's KR2 cowling can be modified to fit various widths. My KR2 has a smaller firewall than Bill's. I was able to easily take some out of the width. See my website. www.awesometrvl.com for details. You could use the same technique to add width as needed. (William's cowling has some extra material you trim off. This will help adjust for size.) Glenda GREG FISHERwrote: I am building a widened KR-2S with a planned Corvair 2700. I am hoping that I do not have to create my own cowl design, that I can buy a commercially available one or ride on somebodies coat tails. What are my Corvair engine cowling options? Is there a mold available I could borrow? Is there one developed that would work for my applications that I could purchase? Are there drawings or diminsions available so I can insure my fuselage shape fairs smoothly into the cowl's line? Or should I purchase a nose bowl and plan on designing and fabricating a cowl myself.
