Larry, I use Thunderbird with usfamily.net as my IP. I have no problem 
with it. I get a notice if the message is suspected to be spam or 
fishing.  I use the IP for email only. about $23  per year.

   These are a pressure fastener. When you screw a bolt into the body 
and insert the whole thing into a hole, you turn the bolt and it 
compresses the body of the fastener and makes it spread out against the 
side of the hole. DO NOT USE ON A AIRCRAFT!!!

Paul, I was the one that wrote about not being asked for a medical. I am 
aware of the problems if in an accident. I only fly my own aircraft. If I 
were asked for a med by anyone in charge and I cannot show one, what are 
they going to do? Pull my license, put me in jail? I'm 81 years old so 
neither one would amount to much. However, I am going to an FAA forum this 
afternoon for the new medical and I have not flown as PIC since I lost my 
medical in 1993. I have done a lot of flying from the right seat. I made the 
post to show that since you have to determine yourself, if you are fit to 
fly, why should you have to get a medical every two years?

About 1980 at Air Venture, A fellow had a KR2 that had a few double 
instruments in the panel. When I asked about it, he said that he was going 
to fly it home to Switzerland and that they required a backup on some 
instruments in case one went bad. To which I asked, If two instruments have 
different readings, how do you know which one is right?

When building my first KR2 back in the 70's, I just loaded my spars and 
fuse. into my van and drove to the FSDO's office. I walked in and told them 
I had my parts in my van and would they please come out and check them out 
and sign them off for me. No problem, I was out of there in about 10 
minutes.

If push comes to shove, your wife's iron will do the job. I have removed a 
4' section from the side by using an iron. (no steam) to heat the plywood 
over the glue line and then prying up the wood and holding it up for a few

Andrew, No need for a full size model. I made a set of sides for my KR from 
scrap wood strips. When I get back to it, I'll make a scrap model, full size
, from firewall to the seat back. I will then use this model, (no plywood 
sides), to pre fit everything that goes into the cockpit area. I can fit and 
drill all necessary holes and all equipment, just reaching through the 
sides. I can then transfer the items to the "real" fuse without having to 
stand on my head to get to the places that need attention, ( I went to 
school on the first KR I built back in the 70's).

I was going by the info on the beacon that you posted. I had read it quite a 
while ago. I was unaware of the Montana beacons. I do recall catching a 
right seat ride with a National Guard pilot in a C-45. We started in El 
Paso, TX and flew to Kansas City. He let me fly while he pointed out which 
lights to fly to. Of course, when we reached K.C. I got to line up the 
landing, Me with my SEL and about 50 hours total time. I thought I had it 
made until about a mile from the runway, he tapped me on the shoulder and 
said "I have the airplane". At least I had the dream that I was going to get 
the landing. This was in 1957.

movies. It's the little round ring that you see sticking out of the top or 
bottom of the fuse. This was replaced by the A-N range which sent out four

you would get a steady tone in the radio. If you drifted off to the right of 
the center of the beam you would get a dash dot from the radio. If you 
drifted to the left you would get a  dot dash. the main problem with this 
system is that you could pick up the signal as much as 60 miles away if you 
were high enough. The spread of the beam was about 3 degrees and at 60 miles 
out the beam was 3 miles wide and you could fly in a circle and have a 
steady tone all the way. The omni range came next. Before the Radio range 
there was a system of light towers across the nation and before that there 
were large concrete arrows on the ground pointing the way for the Air Mail 
pilots. All of these systems worked into each other so at one time you had 
the light towers, the radio range and the A & N system into the fifties and 
all of them were still working when the first omni ranges came along. Point 
of interest, there is a light tower on a hill on the East side of Saint 
Paul, MN downtown airport. It is the only light marker still in operational 
use.

had Halon extinguishers in my print shop. When I needed to recharge them, 
The Air Force Fire unit would do it for me for free. They no longer do it

I went to Johnson Boat works in White Bear Lake, MN to get my Spruce. I 
bought a 16' x 6" x 3" for $1.50 per board foot. It cost me $5 to have a 
cabinet shop cut it down to 5/8" strips, plus had enough left over for 
spars.
Let's see now, if I remember right, that was in 1974 when I built my first 
KR2. I also bought a second board the same size and price and it hung in the 
rafters of my garage until a few years ago, when I cut it up to start 
another KR.
Sure hate to think about buying more wood these days.

About 30 years ago, I flew  Fly Baby from Minnesota to Florida. The cowl 
had a hinge and wire set-up and the wire was not secured at either end. 
Twice after landing, I had someone ask me what type of tach I was using. The 
wire would work out about 5 or 6" after about three hours flying and it 
looked like the prop would contact it each time it passed. (it wouldn't go 
out far enough to actually touch the prop). People sure thought it was a 
tach.

Never heard about Denver hitting a bird. I read an article about the crash 
that said that when John tried to reach behind his shoulder, his left foot 
pushed on the rudder peddle and flipped him over and down. he was too low to 
recover. The article went on to say that NTSB set  up a simulator with the 
same configuration as John's aircraft and 10 pilots, who were not told about 
how the plane crashed, tried to switch tanks while trying to keep control of 
the aircraft and all ten crashed in the same manner as John.

I think I read somewhere on this group, that someone was using the wheels 
from wheel skates, (or whatever they are called). It seems that they bought 
the skates from a thrift shop and had 8 or 10 wheels for just a few bucks. 
They had to replace them often but for the price, they thought it was worth 
the trouble.

Sid said  - Fiber glass cloth has a sizing coating on each strand to help 
the epoxy
resin to bond to the glass. The shelf life for most fiber glass sizing is
five years. After that time the wetting out with the resin becomes more
difficult and will result in a weaker structure. The older the cloth the
worse the situation will be.

I posted this question to the group some time ago and was told that there is 
no end shelf life on fiber glass cloth. Would someone in the industry, (If 
there is someone in the group), please check in and clear this up.

Dan, I would look into this a little more. The dipstick heater is made for 
an auto engine with a long dipstick. Make sure you can still get the heat if 
you cut it shorter.

Robert, I use a small electric heater from Menards. It hangs from the 
ceiling and keeps the UNINSULATED garage at about 60 degrees. It is however 
a 220V heater so you need that much voltage.

Mark, I hate to be one to correct  another person, (not really, I have a 
ball doing it/), but the saying you used above is actually a response from a 
Senator, (don't recall his name), who was asked to come to Washington, (back 
in the 1700's) and sent a reply saying, "I'll be there if the good Lord's 
willing and the Creek don't rise". The reference to the Creek was to a tribe 
of Indians called the Creek, who were giving the settlers trouble at the 
time.
Now you are almost as smart as I am.

Somewhere I found a set of plans and how to for making a torque measuring 
device using a VW wheel as the back of the motor mount and a 6',  2"x4" 
placed on a scale so that as the engine turned up the RPM's you could read 
the torque in foot pounds at any RPM and the guy used a 2"x4" for a prop so 
I don't think the prop has a lot to do with the torque. I have the drawings 
somewhere and if I can find them I'll give them to Mark L. to post on his 
site.  I haven't tried to find them on the internet because I've had these 
plans since the early 80's

I remember a article in (I believe) Popular Mechanics back in about 1973. 
The author was in a  Cessna 150 chase plane(?)and had photos of Ken Rand in 
the first KR-1. The KR-1 was actually flying circles around the 150 and I 
think the author said that the KR was doing about 150 MPH. That's when I 
called Ken and ordered plans for the 2 place when he finished drawing them 
up.

When I started flying in 1957, tail wheel was the only way to go. We did 
have a Tri-Pacer in the SAC Aero Club,(Davis Monthan AFB, AZ), but that was 
about a year after I started flying and the first trike gear I flew. On my 
second time in the air, with a different instructor than the first time, my 
new instructor told me to go ahead and taxi out and then told me to take 
off. He was under the impression that I had about 5 hours in the air. At 
that time I had about 50 minutes just getting use to the controls. I managed 
to get airborne after touching both sides of the runway, (about 50 feet 
wide) and making a low  pass at the hanger area. My instructor had the 
nerves of a lion going after a piss-ant. He said "That was a little rough, 
lets go around and try it again." Then after that take off he told me to 
land the airplane,(Champ 7AC). Never have I seen an instructor with that 
much guts. I did manage to get it on the ground but I suspect I had some 
help from the back seat. It was the that he asked me how much time I had. 
When I told him I had less than an hour of air work only, he said lets go 
try that again! I took off again with nothing but verbal instructions from 
him and also landed with just verbal instructions.

I lost my medical after a heart attack in 1993. I also cannot afford to jump 
through the hoops every year. I also know my limitations and would not fly 
if I were not in top shape. My flight doc. said that there was no reason 
that I should not have my medical renewed so I took the physical and was 
turned down. That eliminates me from getting a LSA.
   I will register my aircraft as a motor glider and fly.  I would like 
someone to check the FAA's records and see if there was anyone that had a 
second heart attack while flying or who had had a medical related crash 
after getting a special use medical.

It's my understanding that the FAA say's that your aircraft is what you say 
it is. If you call it a powered glider you can fly it without a medical. You

This is no wimp engine. 
It's a two cylinder with four pistons delivering 300+ Horse Power
It's extremely small and very efficient and is presently in use in test 
applications 
The configuration below is equivalent to a extremely ballsy four cylinder 
engine 
When doubled, it's an extremely ballsy 600+ H.P. engine




It?s called OPOC (Opposed Piston Opposed Cylinder), and it?s a turbocharged 
two-stroke, two-cylinder, with four pistons, two in each cylinder, that will 
run on gasoline, diesel or ethanol. The two pistons, inside a single cylinder, 
pump toward and away from each other, thus allowing a cycle to be completed 
twice as quickly as a conventional engine while balancing it's own loads.
The heavy lifting for this unconventional concept was performed Prof. Peter 
Hofbauer. During his 20 years at VW, Hofbauer headed up, among other things, 
development of VW?s first diesel engine and the VR6.
The OPOC has been in development for several years, and the company claims it?s 
30 percent lighter, one quarter the size and achieves 50 percent better fuel 
economy than a conventional turbo diesel engine.
They?re predicting 100 MPG in a conventional car.

I would really like to have any date except the 16th & 17th. Joanne has a 
Pow-Wow in Mankato, MN on that date. She has gone to the Pow-Wow every year 
for the past 30 years except last year when she came to the gathering with 
me when the dates conflicted. If need be then 16th & 17 are OK as she will 
go to the Pow-Wow and I will go to the gathering. This was done a couple of 
times before but she really enjoys going with the gals while we look at 
airplanes.

If you must remove the skin, try using a steam iron. let it set on the first 
part of the area you want to remove and when it gets real hot, just use a 
wedge to lift the plywood up and slip a sheet of paper between the longeron 
and the skin. Continue doing this until all the skin is removed. I used this 
method to remove a skin that was installed wrong, it worked very well

   I guess I get the award for the longest way home from the gathering.
   Jo and I drove to Fayetteville, NC right after the banquet and stayed there 
for 8 days and left on Monday morning, (09/27) and drove to Jack & Sandy 
Cooper's home. We spent the night there and left yesterday morning at about 
11:30. We drove through the night and arrived home this morning at 7:30. We 
also had to stop back at Berea, KY to retrieve two pillows we left at the motel.
   Had a very good time at Jack & Sandy's house and also a very good meal.
