Hello KR Community,

It is with great sadness that I need to re-list Bob's KR2. The gentleman
who purchased the airplane last year and asked me to hold it till the
weather was good for transporting it has backed out of the deal. The
website to look at Bob's plane and work is www.krnet.org/krs/boblee. I am
asking $5000 or best offer. I have lots of extras like plans, books, all
sorts of materials, nuts and bolts, an engine stand, CD of all KR
newsletters and a CD of all Bob's work and pictures to go along with the
airplane when it sells.

You may contact me via Bob's email as I still have it up, my personal email
of shortbus1017 at gmail.com, or my cell of 404-538-1434.

Happy building and flying to all of you,
Cheryl

KR> Any KR builders/pilots in the Lakeland, FL area?

2015-06-18 Thread R. Lee Jarvis
Hi Brian & thanks for you reply,

I'd consider myself quite handy, and with a very well equipped shop. But, I'm a
stranger to composites. I have no doubts that I can build a KR or Sonex (which
I would mostly scratch build anyway).?

I'm going to order a set of KR2S plans from NvAero soon; does anyone know what
the current delivery time is running lately?

If you are just a little bit handy and you know how to use tools you
really don't need any support at all to build a KR. People cranked out
KRs in no time at all in the early days when there was no internet and
very few parts available. Most people will want to buy the canopy,
engine mount, landing gear, and wing attach fittings and they are not
all that hard to come by and most you can get cheap from languishing
projects. Everything else you can get from Spruce or Wicks. Any any
questions you have you can get an answer here or on a ton of builder
sites. If you are not handy and you need each step spelled out and all
your parts numbered (not trying to insult anyone, we all have things
that we are good at and an equal balance of things we are not good at)
then build a kit plane.

I'm weighing building a KR vs. a Sonex and would like to talk with
current KR builders or pilots.

The Sonex doesn't have the performance potential and frankly, it's a bit
homely. But it does have superb plans and outstanding factory support.

The KR on the other hand has (as I have read but not seen) less than
superb plans, and nothing quite like the support of the Sonex folks.
But it's performance is more inline with my requirements and I believe
it's more amenable to my building intentions (buying parts & materials
as I go along vs. ponying up a large lump sum to buy a full kit).

I'd love to meet and discuss the KR2(S).

Lee

KR> Building sequence

2015-06-18 Thread R. Lee Jarvis
It seems like most (all?) KR builders are beginning with the fuselage. Does the
construction have to begin with the fuselage, or can you build wings &
empennage first? Workshop space is limited, and it's easier to store flat
pieces out of the way than it is to work around an assembled fuselage.

KR> Anyone flying their KR to Sun 'n Fun?

2011-03-26 Thread R. Lee Jarvis
I'd love to meet up with any of you who may be coming to Lakeland.

I hope to begin building as soon as I finish my current project which is a
complete restoration of a '46 Luscombe (do ever really finish?), and the KR
is high on my short list.

Please let me know if you're going to be at Sun 'n Fun; I'd love to meet

KR> KR-2S in Florida?

2011-01-23 Thread R. Lee Jarvis
I'm still a year or more away from beginning on a project, and I'm
considering a KR-2S. But I'd really like to try one on for size before I
make a decision. A friend began building one 20 yrs ago +/- but got no
further than building the boat when it became apparent to him the the
aircraft was just going to be too small (and he's considerably shorter than
I am).

I'm 6'0" and 200lbs. My preferred option would be to sit in a 2S, canopy
closed, and see how it fits and what might be tweaked if it doesn't. I'm in
Lakeland, is anyone coming to Sun 'n Fun?

Yes, I have.

Perhaps I'm oversimplifying it a bit because I have considerable experience

the capabilities of anyone who can build an airplane.

Lee,

Have you ever done that? Huge work and you better know what you are doing.
The crank alone is very expensive as is all the machine work, pistons, and
cylinders. I certainly would not under estimate it.

Upgrading all the way up to 2180 is easily doable with your current engine
by replacing cylinders and sometimes crankshaft - easy and not too
expensive.

I just caught the tail-end of a news story about an experimental aircraft

KR> Antenna Questions/Carbon Fibre/Graphite

2010-02-09 Thread R. Lee Jarvis
Being a ham radio operator, and a practitioner of the dark arts of antenna
design, I can't imagine why anyone would wish to bother with complicating
something as simple, reliable and effective as a quarter-wave whip or
half-wave dipole. Of all of the things you can spend time, energy, effort
and money on to improve your experimental aircraft, I think the antenna
would be about the last item on my list.

While in theory, there are many antennas that will outperform the simple
whip or dipole, but in practice the difference is so minimal that it doesn't
justify the added complexity.

Besides, how much gain does one need? With a simple quarter-wave whip and a
hand-held radio, I already have a range of 150 miles or more.

Just my 2ยข worth,

After the previous questions concerning carbon and fiberglass arrow rods for
making com antennas and the mention of carbon fibre/graphite rods I began to
think more about it. My first inclination was, of course I wouldn't use
carbon but now I would like to have this one question answered.

My thinking created only one question in my mind for those who know for
sure.

If one were to take a graphite arrow rod for example, place copper tape
lengthwise on the arrow shaft, wrap the tape completely around it, attach
appropriate toroids, soldering and wiring to radio of course. Would the
graphite tube in the center, (which we all know is conductive and
reflective) reflect the radio signal in a 360 degree radius, (which is what
we would want) away from the arrow shaft or would it (the shaft) just screw
up the ability of the copper tape to be an antenna? I do know the copper
could not come in contact with the graphite, hopefully the resin which makes
up the arrow shaft will keep the copper seperated from the graphite fabric.
Just wondering? if anyone knows for sure I would like to read your thoughts.
Below is the link to RSTs airplane antenna kits which include all the
supplies you need to fabricate your own antenna.

http://www.rst-engr.com/rst/catalog/airplane_antenna.html

Here is a link to the type of antennas a lot of composite aircraft guys used
15 or 20 years ago. I glued one of these in the fiberglass wingtip of my
neighbors RV6A many years ago and it worked really well. I think Aircraft
Spruce sells these as well. A little pricey compared to making your own from
a RST kit.

I'm having a difficult time finding a KR2 or KR2S in the area to try on for

What's the liklihood that I'm going to be able to get in and close the

close quarters, I'm more concerned about height.

I think that the biggest challenge is likely to be demonstrating a stall

It seems to me that this should all be entirely possible.

Are the West Coast guys (Steve Glover, Rich Shirley, Lee VanDyke) planning
oncoming? How about Mark Langford? Haven't heard any chatter from him
lately. Is he in-country or across the pond? I'm trying to get a pop-up
camper, but if not we will be pitching tents.

KR> KR2 or KR2S in Florida?

2009-06-13 Thread R. Lee Jarvis
I'm very interested in the KR2S, but would really like to try one on for
size before I make a decision to purchase a set of plans.

Anyone KR2 owners in Florida who would like to show me their airplanes?

Regards,
Lee
