KR> C.G. location / flying qualities

2010-04-08 Thread Ross Evans

Hi
My kr2s empty is right on the forward limit. I have a 48 litre header tank. I
will go over weight before I go out of C of G however in the worst possible
loading scenario. Wings tanks with fuel baggage and a low header. The kr
becomes less stable in pitch it will diverge for instance it will climb but as
the speed bleeds off it will start to decend and as speed builds it will level
off and then start to climb.
The KR will fly a couple of knots faster loaded aft C of G I have noticed it on
a few long trips with good conditions.
cheers

KR> need more building info

2008-10-12 Thread Ross Evans

HI Dan I have looked at this idea to get rid of the top cable from the sling
seat in case some one steps on it! If you have the new aerofoil the rear
spar sits higher in the boat and the tube can run underneath I have a friend
who is doing that and I noticed it when I was looking at his plane!
I wanted to get rid of that top cable and put a rod through to the back of
the seat and have a bellcrank from there but I don't want to bore a whole
through a spar so I won't! May be you could plate the area but I would want
an engineers oppinion! Sorry I can't give you an answer!
cheers

KR> Fuselage Glassing

2008-10-12 Thread Ross Evans
HI phil I have not glassed my boat sides bottom except I used tissue around
the bottom corner "glass won't go around the tight radius and the edge of
the ply after it is painted gets chipped and when moisture gets there it
runs so I glassed it some people are putting a radius but be careful that
you don't go to far as the main longeron there is very structural I would
just mix up some micro balloons and fill the depressions and sand it ready
for paint it does add a fair bit of weight glassing the lot!

KR>

2008-10-12 Thread Ross Evans
hi phil I could have purchased a 0200 with the project for about 12000
dollars the engine had 1700 hours until over haul I spoke with the engine
overhaul guys and between 20 and 25000 to zero time. The particular engine
had been sitting for 6 years and to strip down and check it over would be
about 3000 and if anything else was wrong more the engine ended up having 2
cracked cyclinders and was not as the log book appeared a cyclinder is about
1500 to buy! if the engine is certified a 100 hourly will cost about 1000
dollars and it will use about 26 litres an hour! I straight away made my
mind up of the risk that the engine could be a dud! and end up costing me a
fortune! I am going to have more power and a much cheaper overhaul

KR>elevator mass balancing!!

2008-10-12 Thread Ross Evans
HI phil
I have put the tubing with the lead at the tips I am going to glass around
the tube and over the elevator to past the hinge point as I thought that a
twisting problem could arise!! I would guess that after the elevator is
properly balanced the extra weight would be less than 750 grams I have also
used mil fibre as it has good compressive strength under the glass as I have
removed some foam at the attachment area. Yes I was worried about it being a
problem and looked at the possible problems and I feel that it should not be
to much of a problem I would have liked to have a linkage inside the boat
but the aircraft was finished there when I got it! I beleive the original
builder was looking to do the same as I am doing. I also wonder about the
aeileron balancing arms they look a little week to me to!!!
cheers

KR>how is your kr going barry?

2008-10-12 Thread Ross Evans
HI Barry how are u how is your kr coming along?
I have been real busy on mine I expect the engine in about 2 weeks time it
is currently getting put into a car to have the fuel injection mapped and
then all the reduction drive and aero gear will be put on it! I am going
real well on the building and am expecting the plane to fly around mid year.
The canopy took about 250 hours to build and I have spent probably 400 since
u last saw me!!

KR>elevator balancing marty roberts set up?

2008-10-12 Thread Ross Evans
HI netters I am currently building a kr2S I am looking to balance the
elevator I have filled 2 10mm diameter lengths of chromolly tube with lead
to the hinge point I am looking to attach it and have it looking like marty
Roberts set up. The pictures of his are on last years gathering photo's I
was looking to drill holes throught the timber of the elevator and put 2
bolts with nylex nuts to attach it and then fill the tube with epoxy and
mill fibre to give compressive strength and glass over the tube and onto the
exsisting elevator is this what marty did! Most importantly is this the
right way to do it! Any ideas would be great! on how to do it as I bought
the project and other options of doing it would not be so fun and I want to
fly soon!!

KR>elevator balancing!!

2008-10-12 Thread Ross Evans
hi guys thanks for the info I estimate the balancing weights with the arms
glassed on to be around 1.4 kg and the computer for the fuel injection
weighs 3 kg so I am working with that idea I have not yet got weight and
balance figures yet but I feel from how the project is going I should get
close with a far forward as possible weight and balance limit I have
tricycle undercarrige also!! Time will tell drilling holes into the elevator
to attact the arms is a concern and I only really want some bolts there to
hold it while glassing I was going to use mill fibre around the area where
the foam is removed and thought enough strength should be acheived! I was
going to glass the whole length of the arm with about 2 inches of overlap
onto the exsisting elevator!

KR>aircraft performance how fast!

2008-10-12 Thread Ross Evans
HI Guys with regards to elevator balancing the guys that have bigger engines
0200's what are the typical performance figures and fuel burn per hour. With
out balancing the plans show no elevator balancing and vne is 200mph does
flutter become apparent and with balancing does the vne increase as I
suspect the vne has been set for this reason but I don't know for sure!

KR>aircraft performance how fast!

2008-10-12 Thread Ross Evans
hi Joe yeah that would be the case if the plane was past the forward limit
kr's that have been set towards the forward limit allow can be loaded better
with out going out of balance but yes u are right! I have flown a kr2s in
australia and the owner set his plane up and is can carry more fuel and
weight and will remain in balance right up to MTOW which is the ideal
situation I reckon the plane is still nimble and fun to fly right through
the envelope! I beleive with tail dragger's they can fall on there nose with
full fuel and no passengers on board. I am interested in what speeds
aircraft are attaining with out mass balancing of the elevator as my
elevator is built and what peoples oppions are as flutter can be destroy an
aircraft inflight!
cheers

KR>elevator balance!

2008-10-12 Thread Ross Evans
HI guys thanks for the feed back! I have just asked the questions to get
some oppions of other builders as I am no engineer and really want to fly
and safely. I have been told by different fellows that elevator balancing is
needed and have emphasised the need with more power but yes flutter can
happen at any speed and I have seen some kr's that are flying with no
balancing I am putting in a more powerful engine and have been told that
flutter could be a problem at higher speeds that is why I have asked about
the subject as I want to fly for a long time not a short stint. My plane had
been built straight to the plans and was going to have an 0200 but they are
quite a dear engine to get and overhaul so I looked around and got a little
more power but I was told to by the previous builder balance that elevator
before u fly it! I am going to balance it for piece of mind! I am going to
use a piece of chromolly on each side of the elevator and attach it to the
elevator. How have other's done it that are flying I am looking to have mine
looking like marty roberts plane how did he do it. I don't have his email
address and would love to talk to him about how he did his!
cheers

KR>how long!!!

2008-10-12 Thread Ross Evans
HI netters. I am 24 now I bought my plane at quite an advanced stage
probably about 70-80% I have had it since july last year and have put in
about 600 hours. Lucky I am single and young I will work on it or do
something towards working on it everyday I have just spent about 220 hours
on the canopy alone to get it where I like. I am hoping to fly at easter but
will probably have to wait while I save for instruments I expect mid year so
12 months was the plan at the start and I am trying to go quicker but there
is always something else but I am really enjoying the building and can't
wait to fly it. I have been building in a single car garage and I have to
push the plane outside to work and set up a collapsable bench
Next time I will have a big shed and will do somethings differently in my
approach. U can build anywhere I have parts of aeroplane in my bedroom,
resin in the fridge wings at my parents house. I have also had to move as
the apartment I was in was sold I reckon with all the moving of the plane in
and out and not having room as cost me probably 70 hours. In some areas of
building I should have used peel ply and had a jig for spinning the plane to
make life easy but u live and learn!!
check out www.saaa.com.au go to chapters go to queensland and click on the
map check out chapter 15 there is some photo's of the plane. The last one is
a month ago and the plane is much smoother now

KR>RG2200 EFI

2008-10-12 Thread Ross Evans
HI Guys

In regards to an extra 25hp I have flown a kr2S with 65hp engine direct
drive with 2 people and fuel it climbed out at 60kts with the best rate of
climb about 400ft/per minute I found that the take off run was a bit to long
and on a short strip (grass) I wanted more power as I would not like to get
in trouble on a hot day here in queensland it will get to 42 degrees celsius
and performance changes quite considerably the strips I have used in the
past are in some cases only 800 metres long so it does not give u much room
for error or misjudgement most have rather large gum trees at the end too!!!
I look at a variety of engines the 0200 is a great engine but a very
expensive one to work on
I priced to zero time an engine I was given fixed price's of over $25 000
aus
I wanted 100hp plus for the strips I will use and some more performance I
have seen an rg2200 efi run it was on the back of a trayback ute and the
tray was bending it had from memory a 66X60 pitch it was 3 blade too it was
only run up to 2900rpm as it was being run in but was not shown any sign of
even loading up at this stage it has an enomous amout of torque and has fuel
injection which also helps but I will get better fuel consumption and
overall perfomance than the 0200 and will only cost me about 3000 dollars
aus to zero time if I am out in the austrailian outback and for instance and
I need some engine part the local auto shop will probably have the part the
0200 I will have to wait!
At the end of the day I would love to have a lancair 4 but I am too a poor
pilot who wants to fly so I have to look at what will be the best on my
wallet but also the safety side ways heavily!!!

Here in australia the jabiru 80 hp is a very popular engine but it is a
direct drive with a carbie it is light and reliable but for not a lot more I
have got 110hp+ fuel injection and the reduction drive look at the rotax
engines they have a reduction drive and go very well. I was also impressed
with the workmanship on the engine!
I understand that u can get a engine for cheaper and that is good but I have
spent a lot of time and money just to build the plane I would hate to run
off the end of the strip or clip a gum tree on take off on a hot day so it
does become a balance of what risk u are prepared to take!
Cheers

KR>0200 ENGINE MOUNTS

2008-10-12 Thread Ross Evans
Hi Larry my kr2S has a 0200 mount it mounts at 290mm foorward of the
firewall I am now using a type 4 vw from the vw engine centre it has a
reduction drive and fuel injection all up weight is 97 kg with computer and
all electrical gear starter and alternator. The balance of the engine is not
at half the length of the engine it is at about 2/3rd's towards the front so
that should help with c of g if the 0200 is nearly 240 pounds. I hope to
have it installed with in 6 weeks and then do a weght and balance to see if
it will work out before building a new mount! I have been asked about the
distance on the kr2 as there is a guy wanting to put the same engine on a
standard kr2

KR>canopy hinges

2008-10-12 Thread Ross Evans
HI guys I built my hinges and canopy in the last month the main problem is
getting the canopy frame to lift away from the front deck to over come this
we built a sweeping hinge so as the canopy opens it lifts away it is not to
hard to do u just have to ensure the hinge lifts more than the length when
the canopy it is in the closed position I have photo's of them but depending
on how your front deck is constructed will depend on the sweep of the hinge
u will need I have an alliminium headertank and a removeable front deck the
canopy is mounted to the deck which has a beam across
