Re: KR> Melting lead

2017-02-02 Thread Sid Wood via KRnet
Lead can be melted with direct application of a propane torch. That does
tend to oxidize the lead, so you do get more slag. Solder is a mixture of
lead and tin. These will oxidize at different rates under the torch flame.
That could change the mixture ratio of the solder. Maybe not a big deal,
but could be. If you can get at the underside of the pot, suggest you apply
the torch there.

Speaking of melting lead, I have been trying to figure out for the past
few days how to deal with my solder pot that just crapped out that I use
for mass soldering of circuit boards. It is a big 2,000 Watt electric
pot that is regulated at 250 degrees C. I have a new solder pot on the
way, but am trying to figure out the best way to melt out the 75 pounds
of solder in the old pot and put it in the new one. At today's prices
for bar solder it is $1,500 worth of solder. It takes about an hour to
melt when the pot is working so I am not sure if I can effectively just
remove the pot from the whole machine and heat on the stove or heat it
with a torch. Withe any luck the heating element on the new pot is the
same as the old one and I can just transfer it to the old pot. Can't
buy just the heating element.

KR> In-flight Fire

2017-01-29 Thread Sid Wood via KRnet
Was planning for some air-to-air photos of N6242 this Spring. An EAA
Chapter member said he could fly the photo ship using his Tri-Pacer. On
January 28, 2017, while attempting to return from a lunch fly-out at GED,
Georgetown, DE, he had an in-flight fire seconds after leaving the runway.
He set it back down on the same runway and jumped out of the Tri-Pacer while
it was still rolling on the runway going about 30 miles per hour. He hit
the pavement on his feet, but slammed into the pavement face down. He
sustained a broken nose, broken bone on an eye socket, throat and lung
damage from inhaling smoke and flames, 1st and 2nd degree burns on his face
and scalp. Appears he will recover from those injuries; long term damage is
unknown. The Tri-pacer coasted to a stop in the grass next to the runway
fully engulfed in flames. About 2 acres of dry grass also burned before the
fire department put it out. The white stuff is foam from putting out the
fire. I don't know any further info as to the cause.

Looks like the air-to-air photo shoot will need to wait a bit longer.

Re: KR> AIRCRAFT INSPECTIONS

2017-01-29 Thread Sid Wood via KRnet
Before my KR-2 airworthiness inspection, I had an A do a "practice"
inspection. He found a few minor things and I fixed these before he left.
He never charged me anything. He just wanted to crawl around a KR-2 for a
nostalgia trip. He had built a KR-2 some years ago.
I used the Washington FSDO for my KR-2 airworthiness inspection; actually
two FSDO inspectors showed up to do the inspection. They each wanted to do
the inspection because they had never seen a KR-2 until I sent them the
three-view pictures.
The DAR happens to be a member of our EAA Chapter. He charges $500 per
visit and goes all over the East coast. He tells me what invariably happens
is: He finds stuff that the builder has to correct. So, he has to return
weeks later for another inspection and finds stuff needing correction that
the builder screwed up since his last visit. That needs fixing, so then he
has to come back a third time. He complains "Haven't these guys ever heard
about 41.13 or Tony Bengalis?"

Sid, are you saying your DAR usually charges $1,500.00 for a sign off?
If so, he seems like he is taking advantage of you guys!!

Our EAA Chapter has a member who is also a DAR. He charges $500 per
inspection visit and usually takes 3 visits.

Finally the Rt.aileron is made. The counter wieght came out really well.
?Once I got the lead melted I poured it into a wooden box that I made in
about 2 minutes with my brad nailer. This weight was a little lite. ?So made
it a little wider and it came out perfect.?

When I finished my KR I called the FAA for an inspection. ?They told me to
call a certain DAR. ?I told them I would rather have an FAA inspector to do
it since I was already paying him. ?They agreed. ?To my surprise the
inspector was a helicopter pilot that I served in Viet Nam with. ?Of course
everything went well. ?The DAR was going to charge me $400.00

Re: KR> Flight Training

2017-01-25 Thread Sid Wood via KRnet
Before my first flight our EAA Chapter Flight Adviser said to get lots of
recent time in a number of different aircraft. So he got flights for me in
a Cherokee with 180 hp engine, Yankee, RV-8, Citabria and 6 hours in a
Pulsar XP. The closest KR available to me was 300 miles away. His
philosophy was: First flight you are are a test pilot, so this would be
just another strange aircraft. None of the above operate like a KR-2. And
being an experimental aircraft it may or may not handle anything like
previously described. No question about it, that training saved my life on
my first KR flight. There was lots of drama and people running for their
lives from an unintended aerobatic airshow. CG issues and multiple hardware
failures have since been resolved and N6242 is now reasonably civilized. A
light touch on the stick helps also.

KR> Progress

2014-05-29 Thread Sid Wood via KRnet
Made the first ground engine run after: the engine re-location (to adjust
CG), installing new RevMaster oil cooler, oil pump (to control high oil
temps), moving the fuel pump (to fix vapor lock) and adjusting the Zenith
carb. After an eight-month stand-down the 2180 VW fired off on the fourth
blade; runs smooth and strong. After a little warm up idle can be set at
600 RPM, but shakes a lot. 700 RPM is much smoother. OAT was 57 F & RH
about 95%. Carb was making ice at 28 F. Carb heat works well. Cabin heat
off the oil cooler works good. Mixture Meter works good. Have 6.9 hours TT
on the engine.
And no leaks!!!
Need to finish the cowl, do another W & B, sign off the condition inspection
and get on with Phase I flight testing.

2014-05-26 Thread Sid Wood via KRnet
Took my KR-2 from home back to the airport, K2W6, today. No traffic backups
or incidents. Used the same boat trailer that I used to take the fuselage
to AirVenture for a homebuilders work shop many years ago. While my wife
and I were unloading the KR-2, Art Nalls was doing the first run-up this
season for his Harrier about 100 feet away. He loaned us some ear muffs for
hearing protection.

I had moved the engine 2-inches forward from the plans call-out, installed a
Revmaster oil cooler, oil pump and fuel pump, and built a new cowl. Now
need to re-install the wings, do a weight & balance, calibrate the
pitot-static & transponder, complete the annual Condition Inspection and
then get on with the Phase I flight tests.

I towed N891JF it out to the airport late Friday (see
http://www.n56ml.com/n891jf/140524_028m2.jpg ), by replacing the tailwheel
with the receiver from my Harbor Freight trailer and towing it on the gear.

The panel turned out pretty nicely...see
http://www.n56ml.com/n891jf/panel/panel_final_hdr.jpg for the final shot of
that. And like Ray, getting that airplane out of my basement opens up a lot
of
space. I'm also moving all the boxes of airplane support stuff back to the
hangar, so my workshop is getting a whole lot less cluttered in a hurry! I
foresee a summer of cleaning up and reorganizing my basement, and a dose of
the same for the neglected hangar. I feel like I'm alive again...
