I have flown in the rain and would say that in light rain my onyl concern was
to stay dry as I did not have the front of the canopy sealed suffiently. I do
not make it a practice to go out in the rain and if I see a cell off in the
distance I will go around the main body of water. Light rain does not affect

I'd like to add a cent or two about fuel pressure regulators. I recently
removed a regulator from my type 4 2000. The regulator is a flow through type
that has a dial on the top that turns with detents and numbers 1 to 5 plus. I
found that my engine was running lean at full power and I could not determine
the cause. I finally removed the regulator and gave it a comparison to an
unrestricted tube and decided that there was enough resistance to the flow of
gas
that I wanted to try the engine without the regulator. The engine worked well
without the regulator and showed no tendency to run rich or lean. This is
just a thought as you might be talking about an altogether different type of
regulator.

KR>Ground Adjustable IVO prop

2008-10-12 Thread aviationm...@aol.com
After a long down time, the KR finally went up today with the new IVO prop.
I did not get out of the pattern to give it a good test, however my first
impression is a good one. The prop was set to the low pitch stop. My 2000 CC
type 4 was only able to turn 3000 RPM static. My climb was better then I
remember and my VSI was not talking. I started climbing at 85 MPH and soon
reduced
the speed to 70 to see if the VSI was sick. I was out climbing the 152 ahead
of me and once I turned to down wind, I had to reduce power to keep from
overtaking the little Cessna. As I was leveling off the RPM climbed to 3300
and the
Airspeed indicated 120 MPH. I'm excited and feel that my fear loosing the
high speed that I enjoyed with the Sterba prop may be unfounded.
Someone commented the other day that IVO does not make a Prop for our
engines. That statement is incorrect. They used to only make props for the
Rotax
type engines and the high horse power engines. They how make this mid range
prop that I am flying. For around USD 1200, you can get both the prop and the
cockpit control for in-flight pitch changes. If you're poor like me you can
buy
the prop now and later buy the electric pitch change mechanisms.
Red Oak--- I did not get the KR in the air as early as I had planed, and the
storm front will be moving between Red Oak and Michigan this weekend. So, I
have elected to not make the trip. I will be canceling my reservations at the
Red Coach Inn tonight. I do wish that Those who attend could vote to hold the
event earlier in the season. This time of year always has weather issues.
Here in S. E. Michigan today and tomorrow will be thick fog. Any way have a

You are correct, at one point there was no such rule. I don't know when the

grandfathered. I flew mine with no prior TD time and only 60 hours total time.
 The
difficult part is learning to track straight down the runway and lift the
tail.,
Once you are up on the mains, the rudder will steer the plane just like you do
when you lift the nose of a 152 early prior to takeoff. landing is the
reverse, you can stay on the mains until the tail won't fly any more, then you
hold
the stack back to pin the tail down and stop, while steering with the tail
wheel. I have flown only one other tail wheel aircraft and the principals of
lifting the tail ASAP and keeping the tail up until it falls were the same.
Other
then that the KR is unique in the way it feels.

of
which require different types of authority. For example an airframe mechanic

For
example an airframe mechanic can perform a static test, but he can't certify

I have used three carbs on my KR including the Zenith, and the acceleration
lag is normal. However, 4 seconds seems excessive and may be the result of the
flow to the carb. At full throttle shut off the fuel and look for a slight
rise in rpm (25 to 50 RPM) as the engine starts to die, be sure to open the
fuel prior to engine shut down.. If you don't get a slight rise there is a
good
chance that the mixture is lean at wot. If you get a large rise, you are too

I really like this discussion, because I converted. First, about the uuugly

when retracted. But, after struggling through a couple of collapses and not
being able to land on really soft fields, I converted to fixed taildragger,

And, back then there was no tail dragger endorsement, and hull insurance for
a KR was almost non existent. I did not have any loss of air speed because my
retract was never faired. As to which is easier to fly, the tail or the
nose, I have not flown a nose wheeled KR, but, assume that once you learn to

earlier. The medium prop that I installed is still not turning fast enough,
and
it's set at the low pitch stop. My type IV has carried my KR and I for
nearly 19 years, and we desire to go faster then 143 MPH and carry a passenger
with
at least 500 fpm climb. I'm checking out engine options. Corvair question
which engine models, year models, versions, or serial numbers are most
desirable. Which heads, or other features does one look for? What is OK and
what
should I avoid? For example, I've seen advertised 140 HP and 180 HP engines.

Thanks in advance. I have never used the archives and perhaps with some help

On my KR I joined 2 pieces of 1/4 inch tubing using an aluminum brazing rod,
the kind that melts with a propane torch. The pitot rod is longer then the
static rod and the static rod is plugged with a soft alum rivet and is drilled
with a small diameter drill on the side of the rod.

in order to land, I had to shut off the engine, the plane wanted to keep
flying.

Perhaps I'm missing the point. If the pivot for the elevator and the pivot
for the aileron is attached at the same point, as mine are, the elevator cables
will try to twist forward of the aft spar mounted pulley assembly, any time
the stick is moved for aileron input. As the stick is pulled for and aft,
the aileron cable or push/pull rod set will move for and aft. In both cases,
the stick movement in one direction does not affect the movement of the other
control surface. I guess I fail to see how the bias is induced. Help me out

KR>Kitplanes Article

2008-10-12 Thread aviationm...@aol.com
I just read William Waynne's article about an Ignition Upgrade. For many
years I have used a Bosch 009 distributor on my KR (N110LR) and have been
happy about the performance. During the times that I have used a Mag, I
always felt that the 009 provided better performance. His article is great
in that he provided an alternative to the single spark source provided by the
009. Any one using a single source battery ignition should read this
enlightening information. There are dual point distributors available for
the VW and Installing this system would not be a difficult retrofit.

This reminds me of a forgotten story about N110LR. The a 35 Knot gust of
wind tore my canopy off and it smashed. Unable to get a replacement right
away, I taped the top and let the plane sit outside for a month. One day I
received a call to inform me that the plastic and tape had failed that that
the KR was full of water. I didn't have any drain holes. In stead of looking
like a boat, it looked like a tub. It was half full. The bottom and sides
were bulging at every cross member. I used a drill and added the drain
holes. After several days I surveyed the damage and to my surprise there was
none. The boat held up extremely well. The boat was Mahogany and the entire
inside had been sealed and varnished. Glad I wasn't the guy with the rotted
bottom.

You are correct that the RR tank is polyester resin. Why not use polyester
resin. It's easy to work with and is fuel proof.

KR>KR-IFR

2008-10-12 Thread aviationm...@aol.com
In the early years of flying my KR there were times that I wished I had more
instruments. Remember that the design goal of the KR was to keep it light
and fly fast. I tried to do that initially and just kept wishing for more
equipment. My first wish came while crossing Lake Michigan enroute to
Oshkosh. How did I know that on a cloudless day, the water and the sky are
the same color, and me and my KR with no AH. I nearly went blind trying to
keep that sun ball in the same spot on the cowling for the 17 minutes that I
was out of sight of land. The second time I made that wish was while taking
a "Special" to get out of my home base in light broken cloud cover, but
still IFR. The gap in the clouds that I thought I could follow just closed
in on me and again there I was with only a turn and bank to keep the wings
level. And there have been other wishes as well. I said all this so that
those who want to scold and flame me can do so and also to say the more
equipment you have the better your chances for survival, if for some reason
you can't see.
N110LR now has a fairly complete panel. In that I have AH, DG, T&B, VSI. I
have not tested the plane with the third gyro and hope that my 11 venturi
will turn all of them. To help the venturi, it is placed behind the right
exhaust stack that helps it spin the gyro's prior to rotation.
The low and slow airplanes that most say don't need all that equipment,
usually cant fly at the same speed as a well engined KR can and the faster
you cover real-estate, the more situational awareness you need.

I personally hate to see a working plane sold as parts. But one has to do
what one has to do. A point to consider. Someone once said that if you sell
a KR in 10 parts then you have increased your liability in 10 different
directions. If you decide to part it out, make a parts and price list

Sorry, I don't have any pictures. It was not a KR, however the concept is
the same. The nose of the pants was removed and small round lights were
imbedded into the that spot. The wires were run up the gear legs. Two
lights can be used, one aimed for landing and the other for taxi. It should
not take too much imagination. If the lights are planted too deep in the
pants, the removed nose section could be used to form a clear plexi lens.
