Sid,

That is exactly what I was looking for. I have looked all over GAPSC site
and have never seen those logs before. The ones for the Sonerai are the
ones that I like. I am going to try a couple of things first, before I
change out the entire system, but it is good to know where to find these.
They look almost exactly like the ones that the AeroVee people won't sell to
anyone who does not buy their engine. Does GPASC actually sell these, or
were they just on this engine installation that he is using for presentation
purposes of other stuff?

Thanks,

Is this the intake manifold that you are looking for?

Steve Bennett at Great Plains Aircraft Supply will have the intake manifold
for a VW installation. Go to http://www.greatplainsas.com/scdirectdrv.html

Therefore, I would be a fool to not do something to change that. Jim Brewer
has a rear drive VW with almost the same setup as mine, except that he has
room to have a straight run from the intake plenum, to the Ellison, and he
has a very smooth running engine. I do not have the luxury of that kind of
room on top of the engine, so I am going to have to move it back down to the
underside, as most all others are.

If anyone has a "single tube" to the dual ports, type of intake that they
don't need, I am interested. The one I really like is the one that AeroVee
puts on their heads, but they won't sell it to you unless you have their
engine, which I think sucks a bit. I am thinking of chopping up the one
that I have to make a single tube input to the dual port, but that is a lot
of work, and I hate to mess up an intake that a turbo installation could
modify for their use. ( it started life as a Revmaster turbo intake )

Hi guys,
I had a great time at CC#16 Friday and Saturday. Lots of fun and great
information on Corvairs and Corvair powered airplanes. A special thanks to Mark
Langford for taking the time to remove his turtlrdeck for me so I could see how
the experts mount their stabilizer. I wish I could have stayed for the whole
weekend but my daughter had her 17th birthday Saturday and she wanted Daddy to
grill steaks for her and her friends. On a side note as I was walking down the
taxiway Saturday I heard the unique sound of a corvair at full throttle above
me. Low and behold there was Joe Horton doing a high speed pass at about
hanger height down the taxiway, what a rush. I started back to work on my KR
Sunday with a new zeal I hope to be flying with you in a couple of years. I
would like to get done sooner but I have to be realistic. Forn those of you
who haven't been to a CC and are installing a Corvair on their plane you really
should attend. It will really get you motivated to finnish your plane.

I started building my KR2s as a TailDragger have decided I would rather it
be Tricycle gear for a number of reasons.

I noticed that the Diehl gear bracket is in the way of the Aileron cable
when mounted on the back of the spar.

I'm curious how Mark Jones, Joe Horton, and anyone else with a trigear KR
got around this issue.

Also, is there anyone out there with a KR2 that has "Dan Diehl Tail dragger
main gear" used in the Tricycle gear configuration? Dan Diehl himself told
me there is a difference in the Taildragger vs Tricycle main gear he sells
but I can not recall the difference.

Hello David,
My first airplane was a KR2.  Like most of us the reason was because it was a
pretty little airplane for very little money.  It was twitchy but I managed to
fly and enjoy it for a while until I felt that I want something with more
utility and better stability. That was 20 years ago.
In reality, the KR2 is a fairly complex aircraft to build.  It takes most
builders 2000 hours to finish.
It is not inexpensive any more.  You'll spend over $20,000 and more likely
$25,000 to $30,000 for a nice one with decent panel
Its flying qualities may have improved with the stretched version of the KR2S
but it still lacks in comfort and utility.  I am not telling you all that After
telling you all that
I would to discourage you from building, but if you are going to spend the
time, efforts and money why not build a newer airplane design.
We at Aeromax aviation had designed an  aircraft based on years of aircraft
building experience and were able to combine all the good qualities of several
aircraft designs into one that would make for the best all around airplane.
A Safe and stable airplane that is extremely comfortable (44" cabin), with high
utility, longer range and excellent performance.  You can build it either as a
LSA or a fast airplane.  Our design utilizes various materials and methods for
manufacturing the airframe parts so that we can offer you an airplane kit that
would take less than 600 hours to build.
We have also designed and developed the best Integral Front Bearing (patent
pending) for improving the Corvair engines reliability.  Our integral rear
mount alternator and starter makes for the best and most efficient engine you
can find.
I invite you to visit our web page:  www.aeromaxaviation.com  and look at our
products: Aircraft / Corvair based engines / parts for the do it yourself /
Fire wall forward kits.
The KRsuper2
A great improvement over the KR2.  The fuselage is made as a moldless
composite.  No longer the intricate wood buildup but still needs quite a bit of
time to shape and finish.  Our Aeromax fuselage is made in a mold.  The
aircraft was designed by myself based on my previous aircraft design the Super
Pulsar 100.  The molds were made on a 5 axis cNc router.
The wing of the super 2 is comprised of a 15 ft. center section and two
outboard wings.  I does present an issue when you want to trailer the airplane.
YOu'll have to detach the centeer wing as well for transport.  It uses a
composite / carbon (expensive) Spar.  We have decided to design a wing
utilizing the well proven wood spar 7 ft. center section for ease of transport.
and two outboard wings of 9.5 ft each for a total of 26 ft span.  The airfoil
is the same AS5416 tapering down to 12% at the tip.
the aeromax was designed to offer you the kit advantages at a Plans built
aircraft cost.

Whatever you'll decide to build remember that we are here to help you in your
project.
Feel free to contact us with whatever question you might have.

On Labor Day I posted that I finally had the fuselage sides back on the
work table, and nothing else on the table. I received several
congratulatory messages, and one that was a little different. Ted
Sanders sent me a link to the KRSuper2, KRSuper2.com which looks
interesting. I wrote back to him with some questions, but never got an
answer. I thought he might have been at the gathering, so I didn't get
too worried about not hearing from him right away. I wrote again,
though, last week. I still haven't heard from him.

Does anyone actually have one of these planes flying? Has anyone done
any structural analysis of it? The KR2 I consider a proven plane, in
that they have been flying for 30 years or so. The new wing has been
thoroughly researched and several examples are flying. Does anyone know
anything about this variation, though?

KR> Not Quite Home from Gathering

2009-09-22 Thread n92...@cox.net
Well, we are not quite home yet and probably won't make it until sometime on
Thursday. Eric and I spent the past two days at Dan Diehl's place making wings
and gear parts. We have loaded the truck and are on our way home now with his
complete inventory of landing gear and composite components for the KR. We
have stopped in Amarillo for the night.

I am amazed at how much stuff Dan had available that most people didn't know
about. There are cowlings for virtually any evolution of the KR except the
Corvair. Anything from Marty Robert's to Steve Alderman's cowlings, the
original that Jim Faughn's was pulled from, the original and last "Ol Blue
cowl's. He even had type VI VW's and all the stock stuff. So if anyone is
interested in any of these we have them.

I have finally seen the tail skins that I have heard rumor about. We will be
able to provide them for the stock KR's. There is so much other stuff that I
won't bother the net with but it will be listed on our website once it is
published. We hope to have it up shortly after returning home.

These past couple days have been enlightening to say the least. We have been
fortunate to spend some time with Dan, his Dad, and Marty as well as the great
crew Dan has down in Tulsa. It really was a priviledge to hear about the
history of the KR from those who were there at the beginning and get a new
perspective on the adventure we have embarked on. All good things...

It was great to see everyone at the Gathering and we can't wait until next
year.

KR> 2010 KR Gathering at I39

2009-09-02 Thread n92...@cox.net
Hi Dana,

I just sent Mark a note responding to an email as well which I'll paste here as
using the blackberry for long posts are a pain.

Start msg:
I probably should have waited to respond until I was at my computer instead of
the blackberry to be more clear in my post. My intention was to ensure people
knew they still had the option of offering their locations. I understand AJO
would be too far for most KR drivers much farther than NM or Texas so the
central location idea makes sense.

Please don't misunderstand my post to infer some type of east/west rift. It was
certainly not my intention.
End.

I heard about selling the RV. I just sold my EZ also. I sent a email back a few
weks ago and left a phone msg as well. We will be making several mods to the KR
design also and then build a light sport version.

Steve, I can't speak for anyone else but this has always been a democratic
process where it is talked about on the KRNet but decided at the gathering. So,
no I wouldn't think my volunteering to host the gathering for the third time
precludes anyone from throwing their hat in the ring.

For many on the KRNet that do not know, I have sold my RV and am back to doing
something with the KR design. I'm thinking since I built one KR, and now one
RV, I can put something together via the KR route pretty darn quickly with a
few nice additions.

With that said, i39 is located in central Kentucky, 25 miles south of LEX
airport so commercial transportation is taken care of. The airport is just off
of I-75 north/south and 20 miles south of east/west 64 making vehicle
transportation to the airport very assessable. The new FBO is very receptive
to the idea and will have one very large hangar available to accommodate those
KR's which fly in. They are presently adding 500' to give them 5000' and a new
taxiway. A very large ramp area for milling around on. Camping will be
available just behind the main hangar, albeit no lake to "swim" in. The
airport is out in the country, away from congested areas. Within about a mile,
merely by making a right out of the airport, are two national motels and a
couple restaurants. A couple miles past that is the town of Berea, which is
known as the craft capital of Kentucky for off airport visiting. Having hosted
the gathering twice before, a prior builder of a KR and having been around KR's
as long as I have, I think I have a pretty good idea what everyone looks for in
a gathering.

I'm a big boy, if this doesn't sound like a good place, chime in.

Time to buy some wood.

KR> Well nuts, vapor lock!

Hello Dan,

I would suggest firesleeve on any fuel lines in the engine compartment. It is
cheap insurance opposed to the alternative.

Hi Guys & Girls;

I went to the airport today and prepped Ol' Blue for flight and triple
checked everything. A OK this time and taxied toward the far end of the
runway, wouldn't you know the wind was from the wrong end and it was hot.
Well I didn't make it, it vapor locked before I could get there and I couldn
t get it re-started.

Might be a good thing though. It has a shielded fuel system with a cooling
hose on the gas collator but not good enough apparently. So either I fly it
in cooler weather or fix it right. I had an old English Ford that would do
that in heavy, slow traffic but I carried a bottle of water in the car to
pour on the fuel pump when it did it but of course I cannot do that with Ol'
Blue.

It has aluminum fuel lines that are completely un-covered so I think I need
to start there and shield all of them some how kind of like you would your
water pipes in your home. I can't use water pipe insulation but aluminum
faced fiberglass wrap might work. Anybody have any suggestions as to what to
use?

I will not rush it.

KR> KR Gathering location, 2010

2009-06-02 Thread n92...@cox.net
If anyone is interested in a trek to California I could check in to what
accomodations I can come up with at Corona (AJO). Nice uncontrolled field. Real
homey but not as big as Mt. Vernon. 3200' runway. Fairly close to everything So
Cal has to offer for entertainment for the families or spouses.

A clue as to where this is (the airport identifier if there is one) would be
nice. I think grass would be a good experience for a lot of folks. A 2800'
grass strip is probably equivatlent to a 3600' paved strip, depending on how
tall the grass is. Although it would be nice, I'm not sure that inside
hangar storage would be imperative. After all, we leave them outside for
days at SNF and OSH every year.

I forgot to mention camping in my first message. Camping on the field would
be very good. A lot of folks have grown quite fond of it, spoiled by MVN's
camping area with the pond/swimming hole.

KR> Engine Re-build

2009-05-05 Thread n92...@cox.net
Not necessarily "forgetting" Jim. Just didn't have my log book handy and have
been busy with work as I am not retired. My BFR is due. Maybe you shouldn't
wait for me to get up there.

Dan,

I started reading this e-mail, I almost didn't want to finish reading it.  I
was thinking oh no this is not good.  But then I got to the part where your
engine was running better.  Congratulation, things are look up.

My first experience with a VW was when I bought a used 56 Bug and it ran real
strong and got great gas mileage.  Then in 1965 we bought a brand new VW and I
expected to get even better gas mileage.  But it didn't do well at all.  I took
it back to the dealer and complained.  They asked how many miles we had on it
and I said 2500 miles.  The just looked at me and said give it a chance, it
isn't even broke in yet.  So I wouldn't be to concerned about the 3400 static
RPM,  I bet after a few hours on the hobs it will do much better than that.

I have been in contact with Steve Glover, he was planning on coming up to check
out N522PC, but as you can see he didn't make it here today.  He does have his
Long Ezy back in the air, but he says he needs to get more time on it before he
heads up here.

It is time to renew my insurance and since Steve is listed on the insurance Pam
wants his total hours flown last year and the date of his next BFR.  He as sent
his hours but he just keeps "forgetting" the BFR date.  I e-mailed him today
and told him that I just may have to make up a BFR date for him and send it to
Pam.  I will call him tomorrow.

Looking forward to your next Black Bird update.

Jim

My engine has been completely rebuilt. New VW heads, 94MM cylinders,
straight cam gear, all new bearings, new rods and pistons. I ran it for the
first time on Monday, and was very depressed, after having done all that
work and spent a gob of money, only to have an engine that was still
sputtering and not idling well either. So, I told my sob story to a couple
of very good engine gusy, one a local VW expert, and the other, Roy
Szarafinski, of Corvair fame and the one who is building my Corvair engine
with the Roy's Garage front bearing.

They both told me that if, when you throttle back, it backfires, then it is
too lean, and if it stumbles, it is too rich. Well, as I said, it was
stumbling all over the place. So today, I re-set the mixture and did some
runs. The engine now has a very smooth acceleration, will idle fairly
smooth at 800rpm, and has no stumbles when throttling back. It also has NO
oil leaks.

I still don't see any more than 3400 static, but I think that after it is
run in, it will get a better idle and more top RPM.

So, within two days, I have gone from down in the dumps, to on top of the
world, metaphorically speaking. After I button up a couple of things and
get the cowling on, I will take off and see if I can find the top of the
world.
