Re: KRnet> Who is the owner of this folding wing KR?
Michael has reminded me of some important points, thanks , that link is from my web page1- In Australia we are not allow to use the 4 separate bolts on the WAF as per plans, by our national body CASA ( Civil Aviation Safety Authority) we have to use only 2 bolts with a thick spacer between the WAF to lock them together. 2- I assume the FAA is the same, but when the wings are removed ( or any major control is disconnected ( aileron) when refitted before any flight, a log book entry must be made and signed by a second approved pilot, engineer, that it’s been check and operates correctly ( in the correct direction.) 3 - I glued a block of spruce on the end of the spar and under the top WAF, so when you are fitting the wing, the WAF sit on the block and aligns the single bolt through the neat fitting spacer. 4- I seldom remove the wings. On every 2 nd annual I remove them to check or corrosion on the WAF bolts and their tension Also spar inspection Phil. Sent from my iPhoneOn 5 Apr 2024, at 19:34, Michael via KRnet wrote:Greetings There was a discussion on KR/Freebird folding wings a few months back. The folding mechanism itself is fairly easy and one example on a KR is seen here: http://www.philskr2.50megs.com/photo5.html . The Fisher Flying Aria folding wing bracket is very similar to those in the link above although I personally believe the KR2 one shown is simpler and more efficient. The biggest headache is the efficient and safe attaching (and detaching) of the Wing Attach Fittings (WAF). Summary of what I remember from the thread:Currently, removing the WAF bolts is a pain in the rear and takes time and a few expletives to do. This defeats folding wings if your objective is to regularly fold the wings to save hangar space or like me, trailer my KR instead of paying huge $$$ for hangar space. One commenter mentioned that the plans do not specify a torque value for the WAF bolts so I asked if quick-release bolts; like those on high-end racing bicycles to rapidly remove wheels; with some sort of locking mechanism would be sufficient to secure the WAF's?What about adding a torsion tube (is this the correct name?) between the individual WAF brackets to make aligning and attaching the wings easier and quicker and also inserting the bolts more efficient (they slide through the torsion tube instead of manually aligning the bolts with the holes). Personally, the few additional grams of the torsion tube will add to total weight is worth it for the reduced frustration of trying to get the bolts into the WAF holes. What about the wear & tear on the nuts & bolts and their threads? Especially lock nuts. How to safely & correctly secure the WAF bolts without having to wire/split-pin them everytimeIn the end, the consensus was that it may not be worth the risk of using quick-release bolts & nuts or other rapid removal systems as none of us have the skill and knowledge to know what the risks and likelihood of failure would be. Essentially stick with the plans for securing the WAF's.Now if there was a really bright and talented person out there who could develop a solution for the quick & efficient attachment (& detach) of the WAF's while maintaining the high level of safety & strength the WAF's current design has ... that would be a game changer!Regardsשָׁלוֹם עֲלֵיכֶם (Shalom aleichem)Michael L Griffinmileg...@gmail.comFax : 086 733 0650Cel : +27 83 462 0462Please consider the environment before printing this emailHe who play in root, eventually kill tree.DigitalOceans VPS :: https://bit.ly/jgdg-referralEvE Online Free SP :: https://bit.ly/eve-referral01 -- KRnet mailing listKRnet@list.krnet.orghttps://list.krnet.org/mailman/listinfo/krnet-- KRnet mailing list KRnet@list.krnet.org https://list.krnet.org/mailman/listinfo/krnet

Is there any metal in your oil filter???Phil Sent from my iPhoneOn 26 Feb 2024, at 05:23, Mark Langford wrote: My last flight in KR2 N891JF was back home from the KR Gathering at KMVN. When I got back, I dumped the hot oil for an oil change, and the next day I adjusted the valves. I try to do both every 25 hours. The valve adjustment frequency seems a bit extreme, but what GPASC recommends, and with most VW heads I've had, two or three valves always needed adjustment. I'm a bit picky about valve adjustments, because if you let an exhaust valve go too long without adjustment, it will eventually tighten up to the point that it never closes. Once it reaches that point, it gets very hot very quickly, because it doesn't have the opportunity to dissipate its heat to the valve seat, and will stretch and break in short order. Been there, done that, and it's no fun at all! Having said that, I've been running Revmaster heads since John Bouyea and others have sworn by them, and guess what.the valves really hold their adjustment pretty close. I may find one that needs a tiny fraction of a turn on the adjuster, but often they are all still perfectly adjusted! Joe Horvath at Revmaster says it's all about the metallurgy of the head and valve seat material, and that works for me. Superior cooling may be another factor. So, while I was adjusting the valves a few days after I returned from the Gathering, I noticed a weird and ominous noise coming from the engine, like something large and steel was broken or loose. Has anybody else every heard one that sounds like this when simply rotating the engine? I'm just looking for a data point. I don't recall the engine ever making this noise previously, and can only believe that if I'd heard it before, I'd have definitely noticed. Listen to the short movie at http://www.n56ml.com/n891jf/vw/wierd_volkswagen_noise.mov (you may have to cut and post this into your browser) Sorry about the camera moving around a lot during the prop rotation. One arm is connected to the other, and when rotating the prop with the right arm, the left arm moves around too! Note that the distributor and drive gear are removed, just so I could get a better look at the brass distributor drive helical gear on the crank, which appeared secured and in one piece, and because it eliminated those two parts as a source of the problem. -- Mark Langford m...@n56ml.com http://www.n56ml.com Huntsville, AL -- KRnet mailing listKRnet@list.krnet.orghttps://list.krnet.org/mailman/listinfo/krnet-- KRnet mailing list KRnet@list.krnet.org https://list.krnet.org/mailman/listinfo/krnet

KRnet> KR2SS testing - update
Hi guys Had some unexpected teething problems so far To start with, before first flight, the Rotec TBI gave nothing but trouble, running too lean and cutting out about 3/4 throttle. Modified a few times by Rotec, finally got to WOT , then cuts out, but they refused to test run it at WOT( see their web page, on how they test them , think very hard before buying a new one. They refused to refund my money, that wasted months. So purchased and fitted the Correct 0200 carburettor,$ fixed the running problems. Then running hot, so, more time taken to modify cowl inlets from 3 inch to 5 inches. That was fun cutting up a beautifully finished cowl, but fixed the temps so far. But not summer yet??? Will Finishing off cowl painting after testing is finished. Then, the prop 60 x 70 was too much for the engine, low RPM. static 2100 , WOT 2400 , no were near the specifications of 2750. So flying has been a bit restricted. Unable to borrow a lower pitch prop to try. Waiting on a new prop 59 x 68 $$ Then after about 7 hours the left mag failed, so they had to be sent away. Found out both unserviceable, so had to order new ones. $ That fixed that problem, More lost flying time Now only have 11.5 hours on clock Next minor prop, when I built her I, placed two thin ply packing shims under rear HS rear spar ( -3 deg) as discussed on the KR net. Had to use too much forward trim, so removed one shim a few days ago, seems better , but weather has been so windy and rough, test flying is very difficult. Hope the new prop from Nee Zealand arrives soon, and proper testing can start, ( if weather allows) this is my first tailwheel aircraft. But it handles great on the ground, and still in one piece so far. Testing Can only get better. To be continued Phil matheson Australia VH PKR KR2Ss- continental 0200. Wow. It’s certainly not a KR just a price of Info from CASAIN Australia if any flight controls are disconnected, a second qualified pilot MUST do a second inspection before it can be flown.I would have figured the FAA would be the samePhil. Some, like the castle nuts, are used to keep things in place. From my perspective, unless the plans specifically define the function of the nut or call for a specific torque to be applied to it, one could argue that this is to keep the connecting rods in place.Just for reference, the YouTube link below shows the use of a castle nut in a wing folding mechanism (please, forward it to minute 10:15). Yes, the folding mechanism is different and this is an ultralight (with different magnitude of forces applied to the structure). The challenge I am unable to overcome is the top forward and aft WAF's pivot angles do not align sufficiently to allow for a hinge motion. Tilting the spar's to align them may be an option to align the hinge movement but not feasible for exiting KR2's and I have no idea of what doing so will do to the design, performance and most importantly safety of the KR2. Tilting the spars is a radical deviation from the plans. Personally, tilting the spar is not viable.2) A potentially more viable solution is replacing the WAF bolts with pins enabling you to rapidly remove all the WAF bolts, pull the wing out a little to clear the WAF brackets and rotate the wings up & backward (like Philip's Folding wing link shows). This would be ideal for trailering & reducing hangar space. The challenge I see is doing so without compromising safety. Replacing the WAF bolts with a hitch-pin and cotter-pin (lynch-pin?) combination for rapid attach & detach is very easy but doing so without compromising integrity and safety of the wing is paramount and where I ran afowl of my lack of expertise. If anyone has a solution, I would be most interested!Philip's link: http://www.philskr2.50megs.com/photo5.htmlRegardsMichael L Griffinmileg...@gmail.comFax : 086 733 0650Cel : +27 83 462 0462Please consider the environment before printing this emailHe who play in root, eventually kill tree.Linode Private Server :: http://goo.gl/OnpGMSEvE Online 21day trial :: http://goo.gl/TAZSJ8On Tue, 8 Aug 2023 at 10:36, Phillip Matheson via KRnet <krnet@list.krnet.org> wrote:Have a look on my wed page. Michael In Australia CASA ( civil Aviation Safety Authority ) would not allow ( in the early days of building) the 4 bolts per WAF. The WAF has a solid spacers between each pair and a single 3/8” minimum bolt. ( also we do not use the aft 2” of the CoG. Vh-PKR , KR2Ss now done 5.5 hours. I have not done much testing, just flying about home airport to get some hours on the engine. Have tried everything expect another prop, that properly will come. Full throttle straight and level only produces 2300 rpm = 122 kts (140 mph) Have ordered a new lower profile tailwheel, as my tailwheel fits the ground before the plane lifts off the runway in a tail high taxi. Many thanks old friend. I sent him an email on the net, you will see. Really sorry your health is not as good as a 21 year old. 😂. But sadly we are all getting older. I hope to have a few years left yet. ( fingers crossed on my health) I’m 65, ok at the present. I was hoping to see you. But can’t beat fate. How far from Oshkosh are you. Never know. Re: KRnet> Horizontal stabilizer kr-2
Mike I totally agree with a standard krMy KR2Ss is longer and wider, so a larger tail area, as per Mark Langford is a must. The next most important area is empty CoG. Try and build with the empty CoG on for even FWD of the plan forward limit. My first kR2 needed min 75 kg pilot with empty plan to get it into CoG range My new KR2SS empty was about mid range, so I bit the bullet and made new engine mount and extended the cowls 3 inches forward. Now I can full load within the limitsPhil Matheson. Sent from my iPhoneOn 3 Mar 2023, at 06:12, MS wrote:Just noticed the subject of this post is "Horizontal stabilizer KR-2". Sorry.Mike StirewaltKSEE On Wednesday, March 1, 2023 at 06:12:56 PM PST, colin hales via KRnet wrote: Hi Jamie, With regards to solid proven advice, I can solidly say, I didn't extend the fin forward. I don't have any stability issues so my advice is that there is no need to extend the fin. But if you want to extend forward the fin an inch or two, I can't see any harm. But I am blue in the face because I say this until I am blue in the face, stability is all to do with centre of gravity. The standard KR2 might be pitch sensitive to those who fly jumbo's but there are no yaw issues with the plane. Far more of an issue is engine torque. Depending on how much power you will have will depend on how much corrective rudder you need to counteract engine torque, adding to the fin isn't going to help that one bit. Since there is no offset built into the fin, as there is on many other aircraft, size is not really an issue. For clarification, some aircraft have the fin offset to counteract permanently engine torque, so you don't need a rudder trim tab or to keep so much rudder in when taking off or climbing with full power. The KR2 fin is set in line with the fuselage centre line for simplicity. Also, VW engines you need to offset the fin to the right, Continetal or lycoming, off to the left, because they rotate in opposite directions. So to save confusion, on such a plane where engine choice is open, the fin is set down the middle with no offset. I came across a Midget Mustang where the owner cursed it because he could never keep it straight on take off. I was asked to look into it and quickly discovered that the original builder of many previous owners had put the fin offset bracket on the wrong way. Swapping it around made the pilot a lot happier. So my personal advice is to build it light and keep a forward C of G and keep to the plans. One less issue for your inspector to study. Where I live, that type of deviation from the plans would require lots of paperwork. I know this hasn't answered your question perfectly, but the advice is sound.
