I LIKE IT! Hey that gives me an idea... By the way, were you teaching at
Keesler in '84? We may have crossed paths. Drop me a line. I may know some
of your old pals...

I want something that can be opened from the outside if I'm trapped or
disabled. A simple latch wont do.

I haven't gone to the junkyard yet, but i was thinking along the small
popular import line. I'm going to put the latch mechanism on the center
of the turtledeck opening and the catch on the canopy frame along with
an appropriate handle to pull it closed. I'll build a mall lockable door
on the turtledeck by the left rear canopy corner and install latch
handle inside the door for opening from the outside (only lock when
parked..When flying leave unlocked. In case of an accident it allows a
rescue crew emergency access). The inside canopy open handle will be
somewhere convenient. I'll go mark this all off with some masking tape
and put some pics up on the website for clarity at some point today.

Glenn
You're right. I have been struggling with how to latch my canopy for several
months, discarding three attempts so far. Have you spotted one in particular
that you see as a possible candidate? My canopy will open forward like Mark
Langford's and Joe Horton's. I'm thinking a latch from a small import as they
tend to use a lockable handle or push button style of lock. Maybe a Mazda
Miata? Any suggestions gladly welcomed.
Thanks for the great idea!!!

Can someone tell me which way the latch RR sells should be installed, with
the latch on the canopy or the wood ?

KR> Canopy Latch

2008-10-12 Thread Steve Bray
Sorry..should have given you a little more info.

Bought a 95% project (yea) that has a side opening canopy with the hooks
installed and glassed in the canopy but no latch's. I bought the latch's
from RR and when installed the cam over hits the wood and makes it hard to
latch as in it takes both hands. This doesn't seem right.
I can't get the archives to work and find nothing in the plans about it and
RR sent none, I didn't know enough to ask.

Steve,

I am not sure what the latch that RR sells, is, but whatever you do, install
it, so that the latching piece is down. If not, then, it could, and will
catch, when you close the canopy.

KR> Canopy Latch

2008-10-12 Thread Steve Bray
Dan,
Do you mean so that the latch folds over downward to latch ?
As it is now I have to lift the latch upward to latch it. The hook is above
the latch and the latch
folds up to lock in place.

KR> Canopy Latch Lock Mechanism

2008-10-12 Thread Dan Heath
All the discussion a while ago, about canopy latches and locking mechanisms,
caused me to start thinking about the safety of our latch. I became
concerned that it could vibrate open while in flight. I know Murphy all too
well.

This is what I came up with, and the best part is that it works. Another
nice thing is that it only cost $4.50 for the assorted box of springs, and
the rest is left overs.
