I wouldn't get too concerned on drilling the holes as:

A. you'll probably never going to swap them side to side and
B. If you do and the holes don't match (they'd probably have to be
cnc drilled to do so anyway when swapping side to side/ front to
back) just plug the old holes and move the brackets inboard or
outboard an inch or so. Try not to over complicate the building
process or it will never fly. :-)

The guy that started the project that eventually became my KR had drilled the
spars to mount the gear as a nose-dragger. I left the nose-gear with him and
turned the gear around to make it a tail-dragger when I bought the project.
Sure glad I was ignorant about needing a CNC or moving the gear location to
swap it. He drilled the holes true, and all I had to do was swap sides and
turn the gear around.

I really don't think of it as being over complicated to drill the holes true on
the same pattern side to side. For that matter, I don't understand why one
wouldn't at least attempt to do so.

After considering the problem in greater detail and making some
drawings I'm thinking the solution is not that difficult. If you
clamp the castings back to back, drill each hole and insert a bolt as
you go to hold alignment, you can rotate the casting from the front
side of one wing the back side of the opposite wing and have the
holes match. Cancel the order on the cnc machine. Just don't try to
use the casting on the front and back of the same wing without
precision drilling.

If one wants to go to the trouble of drilling six holes (that's what
I have in mine) in each of two different castings (of dubious
similarity) so that they match PERFECTLY when reversed 180 degrees, I
guess it can be done. I'm just saying, for several reasons, that
kind of effort and accuracy is not necessary for our
purposes. Having seen my KR and others being built and flying, I'm
guessing that kind of accuracy is beyond the capabilities of many KR
builders anyway and thus is not a show stopper. If your casting
aren't reversible, don't worry about it , go to plan B. Do the best
you can and move on...

KR> DIEHL LANDING GEAR LEGS

2016-12-09 Thread ol' weirdo
Would someone be kind enough to submit to the group or to me the size of
the blank one must have to cut out the Diehl landing gear legs. With the
Canadian dollar trading at 75 cent US the thought importing them just
doesn't exist. And there is a firm nearby that sells cutoffs.

Thanks

Larry is correct that the bolts alone are enough.
I have over 200 landings on mine this way with no movement or issues.

Also an added benefit of not glueing the brackets to the spar will allow any
future decisions to change from tail dragger to nosewheel configuration or vice
versa.
This assumes you drill the bracket holes in both brackets at the same time (so
they are identical.) The brackets move to the rear of the spar and then swap
sides, in the nosewheel configuration

I'd advise sealing the wood on the spar under the bracket with either
epoxy or varnish before mounting the bracket. The bolts alone hold
the bracket. If the six bolts alone don't hold the bracket you need
to make softer landings.

Of course this isn't going to help you with the fittings, nor do I have
any pricing information, but <http://www.flex-a-form.com/products.asp>
advertises as being willing to cut fiberglass struts that seem to look a
great deal like the Diehl gear legs. If one wanted the longer gear legs
like Larry's and mine, this might be a useful source.

KR> Diehl landing gear

2008-10-12 Thread Myron (Dan) Freeman
Hi Guy's

OK, this time I'll ask before I order. The last time I bought KR parts they
showed up on the KR list in the next day or two and I could have saved some
money. What I'm looking for is the Diehl landing gear set for the fixed gear
tail dragger. The two castings and two fibreglass struts with all bolts along
with maybe the axles, wheels, brakes, fairings ect. ect. What I'm considering
to do is replace my retractable landing gear along with some other major
modifications. If you have anything that I might want please contact me off
list.
