KR> Dragonfly Canopy Question
I have the TODD'S canopy. on my KR2. It is VERY flexible, and op[tics are fantastic. My KR2ss I'm building, I found a tinted Zenith 701 canopy, very large but cuts down to a perfect fit, it is round at the back, but this time I will be flattening the top as it is very flexible as well. (Australia). This was way too large for the KR and in itself has the bubble look which I wanted to avoid. I was after a streamlined appearance with a flatter top and more vertical sides As the canopy was so large and wide, the curvature over the top was less pronounced than a smaller blown one. It was this part that I cut out and used in my KR. It's easier to see what I am talking about in this photo. http://www.kr-2s.com/images/krnet/zenith.jpg And I still had to pull the sides in a little to meet the canopy frame! Here's how it looks finished http://www.kr-2s.com/images/yellowtape_600.jpg Food for thought. That's what I don't like about the Todd's canopies that I've seen..they are more bubble like than the Dragonfly. And as for optical qualities, I don't know of anyplace on my Dragonfly canopy that isn't perfect. That also goes for the shape, so I agree completely. I left one off the list...the Lancair canopy. I doubt they're cheap, but Allen Buzza in Perth has one that he bought damaged (and therefore unusable on a "proper" Lancair), but he just cut off the bad part and what was left over was perfect for his KR. Something else to keep in mind. Another consideration is thickness. The Dragonfly is 2/3 of the thickness of the official KR2S canopy that RR was selling, which makes the Dragonfly lighter and more flexible, and therefore easier to bend to different shapes, if that's a consideration. Resistance to bird strikes wouldn't be as good though, not that I worry much about that. My biggest concern with birds is killing my prop during takeoff or touch-n-goes. FYM has a flock that seems to live out in the middle of the runway. So far they've been quick enough to get out of my way. I sincerely hope their luck continues... Like our canopies, the pricing has gone up significantly. They are now about $800. --Original Message-- From: R. Here's the original manufacturer of the Dragonfly canopy - I believe they still are producing them. Give them a try. Aircraft Windshield Company Alamitos, CA 562-598-0716 FYI - the Dragonfly is a molded canopy - Todd's is blown - molding usually produces better optics and is responsible for the flatter top which yields more headroom. Kerry, Good to hear from you again, and to know there's still another KR being built in Texas! There are two sources at the bottom of http://home.hiwaay.net/~langford/kcf.html , and some other interesting info on the Dragonfly canopy at http://www.fortunecity.com/marina/skipper/388/dflycanopysurvey/ done by Mark Lougheed. Todd's Canopies in Florida also makes something like a Dragonfly canopy, but I'm not sure how close it is. I'm a big fan of the Dragonfly canopy though. Jim Hill turned me on to that, and I believe he was the first to use it. The Pulsar is another option (I think Larry Flesner used one of those) and the Grob MotorGlider is another option that's very similar. Willie Wilson has an example of that one. His is shown at http://www.krnet.org/krs/wwilson/ . I have better pictures of his plane from my English adventures. I'll post them one of these days... Todd makes a very nice canopy that I believe he calls a Dragonfly, but I understand that it is not quite the same. However, I don't think you can go wrong with one of his canopies.
