I think the main reason my hours are low compared to the others is I kept it 
simple. I did not deviate from the plans hardly at all. No flaps, only a header 
gas tank. My VW engine was purchased used, but all in on piece so I really just 
bolted one on versus building one. No fancy interior, painted it myself. I did 
scratch build my wings, but bought a cowl. No other prefab parts. My weight 
came in fine 600 pounds. I am an engineer and a pretty good mechanic, but it 
was my 1st aircraft build. I've never won any awards for my airplane for its 
appearance, but I also now over 620 hours flying her. Made it to California in 
it to the KR gathering from Kansas City. I've flown over 100 Young Eagles, too 
many breakfast flights to count. She's a keeper.

This is great to get these totals. 
I do plan to buy the wing skins. Probably fab everything else per the original 
way.
A full time job is 2000 hours per year.
Robert, 1500 hours is on the low side of these times. Did you use any prefab 
parts like wing skins? what was ur experience prior to starting to build the 
KR? and why would you say you were faster than others? skill, work environment, 
tools?
My current house doesnt have a garage. I do have a 20x30 fabric hangar at the 
airport but it's three season due to the bottom has to be open for wind 
compliance (which makes it complaint to over 100MPH winds).  Of course there is 
nothing stopping me from (I JUST realized!!!) building a 16x20 work shed INSIDE 
my hangar, and heat it with a herosene heater or something to get 4 seasons out 
of it!

I think the main reason my hours are low compared to the others is I kept it 
simple. I did not deviate from the plans hardly at all. No flaps, only a header 
gas tank. My VW engine was purchased used, but all in on piece so I really just 
bolted one on versus building one. No fancy interior, painted it myself. I did 
scratch build my wings, but bought a cowl. No other prefab parts. My weight 
came in fine 600 pounds. I am an engineer and a pretty good mechanic, but it 
was my 1st aircraft build. I've never won any awards for my airplane for its 
appearance, but I also now over 620 hours flying her. Made it to California in 
it to the KR gathering from Kansas City. I've flown over 100 Young Eagles, too 
many breakfast flights to count. She's a keeper.

I built mine from scratch,nearly finished- appr. 2300 hours +.
I think with prefab. parts ( it depends how many of them) it could be done in 
650 to 1000 hours.

Plans built KR-2 retract tail dragger with Diehl wing skins then converted 
to Diehl tri-gear, all electronic gauges.  3800 hours build time, $28K in 
parts and supplies over 29 years.  Painted it myself with house paint.  Have 
4 flights and still trying to get rid of the tail heavy cg.  Left arm and 
head room lacks about 2-inches on left side.  Have abandoned the dream of 
taking friends and Young Eagles for rides with this airplane.  Were I a Ken 
Rand sized person, no problem.
Next airplane will be a KR-2S with a big engine (Corvair or such), should I 
live so long.

I have never built a KR1, but have built 2 KR2 and I got in on both of them
as started projects.  The first one took as much time tearing out and
starting over, as the rest of the build.  The second went fairly smoothly,
but both took me 6 years to complete.  I don't think you should be looking
at anything under 1000 hours, and probably 1500 is much more realistic.

But you have been reading this list and must realize that nobody wants to do
it pure stock.  Those dollars and hours of 40 years ago never were even
close.  It is hard to say how much money you will spend, but my guess is
anywhere from $10 to $25 thousand.  The more you try to skimp on quality,
the more risk you take on.

You need to building this plane because it meets your desire to fly and it
is the plane you want.  You have to stay within budget and time constraints
that are realistic for you, but you also have to realize that flying is not
CHEAP, no matter how you cut it.  I doubt that there are many planes that
you can build that are more easy and fun to fly than a KR.  If that is what
you want, build it.  If you want to make a lot of changes, plan on a lot
more money and time.

One of the builders a few years ago built a KR2S in less than a year. Guess 
what? He bought a partial with boat complete and some other work done. I was 
interested but he got it first! - around 2 Gs) His claim, which found it's 
way to OSH was 1 year and 10 grand! Bill's efforts are shown on the kr 
website (the one with the sharks teeth.) He turned off the internet, and 
shut off his phone (or at least didn't answer cuz' there were a few people 
wanting to talk to him at that time and after  :-)  ... an experienced 
aircraft person as well - not a newwby.

Hey Guys,
 I had something like 3200 hours in actual construction time building 357CJ. 
This did not include head scratching, driving for materials, ordering and 
drooling over catalogs full of goodies. The actual money spent did include a 
lot of tools and upgrades after buying something cheap first. I now own all of 
those tools and just grab it when I need. I now own the knowledge gained from 
doing so much twice (or more). The skills are far improved for glassing and 
sanding. Yes the second time will be much faster. I am starting with a lot done 
for me. I turned the corner on weight reduction about 2 weeks ago as well as 
any changes that I was going to make. I basically have a parts to assemble kit 
now (thank you Eric). Well that may be a little over simplified but still going 
fast. I have about 8 hours invested in the past week and the results are 
vertical stab foamed,sanded, and glassed. Rudder- foamed, sanded and one side 
glassed. rudder cable guides completed. Bonding cable started form rear. Com 
antenna built and installed. The week before I did a mock up using the parts on 
hand to get a picture of what this version may turn out like as well as making 
sure I was going to have that precious head room that I shorted myself on the 
first time around.

Funny you should ask this, as I was thinking about it yesterday.  I finally
read the January Sport Aviation article about the KR2 spinning it in while
with video running, and after reading the NTSB's description of the KR2, I
thought "anybody reading this is going to think you could build one of these
in no time".  And then it occurred to me why I've seen an uptick in new list
subscribers in the last few weeks...some of them read this same article and
it sounded like a cheap and easy to build airplane.  But that's not reality.

I kept meticulous records building mine, and although I made a lot of
changes, I quit counting at 5400 hours because I thought it was ready to
fly, and I was close to being done.   The advertising that RR used to do
said 800 hours, and I don't know of anybody who's built one in less than
1500.  I'm guessing 2500-3000 is more typical for a "plain" KR2.  I'll bet
Robert Pesak and Hurbert Furle have more time in their planes than I do.

And with the kind of changes you're planning, you are headed for the same
schedule.  A KR1 will take a little less time to build than a KR2 or KR2S
because there's less wing area to sand, but most other pieces will take the
same amount of time...they're just a little smaller.  You'll definitely be
making your own cowling, as nobody sells one that I know of...not that it's
a big deal, but it's not like buying one with your Visa card.  Mine was
"scratch built" and it took a lot of time...12 years of spare time, an
average of 38 hours per month, and I never even painted it!

Having said all of this, I expect my next plane to go at least twice as
fast, if not faster.  Experience and knowing where I'm going is half the
battle...no head scratching required on this next one.  Joe Horton is
proving that now on his next one.  I saw Allen Buzza in Perth laying out a
fuselage side in an afternoon, and he expected to have the boat done in a
week!  This was his second (almost third, considering his canopy disaster)
KR2.

I guess what I'm trying to say is it ain't quick to build, especially if you
make changes that nobody's ever done before.  A lot of people show up here
with their hair on fire to build the airplane of their dreams, and many burn
out before they even get started.  If you have to ask how long it's going to
take to build, you have to decide how seriously you want to fly, and then
consider how much persistence you have to apply for the long haul.  Take
into consideration how important some of your changes are to the equation of
getting it done soon, or getting it done to match your dreams...
