KR>KR Gathering 2022 @ KMVN/ Call to Register

2022-02-17 Thread John Bouyea
It's never too early to begin your summer flying plans! And 2022 holds 2
special and specific events for you to add to your calendar;

July 25-31 / Oshkosh Air Venture - we're celebrating 50 years since Ken &
Stu introduced the KR to the world

September 8-11 / the KR Gathering returns to Mount Vernon, Illinois and
running in conjunction with the MidWest Light Sport Expo

Oshkosh: A group of KRNet members are working with EAA National staff to
help recognize the unique qualities and techniques that made the KR method
famous (and heavily copied!) Details are yet to be worked out but many years
of KRs appearing on the flight line as well, as Mark Langford hosting the KR
Forum, make our airplanes "regulars" at Oshkosh. It would be great if we
could have a large presence and as many airplanes at Oshkosh as possible.
Several people have already committed to attending. It will be great if you
can bring YOUR KR too! I'll let somebody else pick up the ball to talk about
the Oshkosh effort.

KR Gathering: After many years' events at KMVN, Chris Collins the airport
manager told Larry Flesner running the Gathering the same weekend as the LSA
event would be a good thing. KRs after all ARE pretty small airplanes! We
have the opportunity to introduce the KR design to a bunch of new people
while we have our regular gathering. Chris plans the KR gang will have
access to the features and functions that make Mt. Vernon such a great
location, even as another event is taking place. Think great facilities,
friendly people, campfires down at the lake, space for camping on location
and everything else. You can read about the Gathering on our dedicated web
site; http://krgathering.net and the MidWest LSA event;
https://www.midwestlsaexpo.com

Another word about the Mt. Vernon Gathering. Larry Flesner volunteered to
run the apparel concession again. Thanks Larry!
You can help Larry by signing up the attend the Gathering AND let us know if
you want to buy a ball cap and/ or shirt specially embroidered to
commemorate the 50th Year of KR flight.
http://krgathering.net/web_pages/kr-registration-form.htm

Hoping to see you this summer!

KR Gathering 2021
September 10-12, 2021
Lee's Summit Airport - KLXT
Each year KR enthusiasts, builders, and pilots travel to the KR Gathering to
exchange ideas and learn more about the KR series of aircraft.
We talk to fellow pilots, other builders and take lots of photos to assist
in our building process. The best part is when we make and renew friendships
from past Gatherings.
2021 is the forty-ninth anniversary of KR flight and returns to Lee's
Summit, MO (KLXT.) This will be the second Gathering here.
The airport and especially the local EAA Chapter 91 make us feel welcome and
it shows! This year's Gathering is hosted by Rob Schmitt with assistance
from others.

FWIW, the Dragonfly and Quickie people are going forward with their
annual gathering.
KR's share the same VW heritage and would certainly be welcomed. Steve
Bennett used to join us in his KR1.
Mark Langford has joined us as well (once for sure, maybe twice?), but he
drove his VW as his KR2 was still under construction.

KR> KR Gathering 2020 cancelled. Rescheduled for 2021

2020-07-06 Thread Rob Schmitt via KRnet
The members of the KR Gathering Steering Committee made the decision to
cancel this year's KR Gathering that we had scheduled in September 2020 at
the Lee's Summit Airport.

There were just too many issues with the Covid 19 that were going to make
this difficult for us to execute. The biggest issue was going to be meals
and meal serving at the EAA Chapter. The county also recently instated new
mask wearing policies as well. We are just not sure when any of this was
going to end.

We would however like to try again in 2021 in Lee's Summit. The tentative
dates in 2021 will be the weekend of September 10-12. I have already talked
to the Airport Manger and he is good with these dates.

Sorry for the change, folks.

Re: KR> KR GATHERING 2020

2020-05-21 Thread Mark Langford via KRnet

Larry Flesner wrote:

> Equipping with ADS-B out also might scare the hell out of me.

I had an eye-opening experience yesterday. I was flying south to
photograph some earth dam construction I was interested in near
Birmingham, and took off in "marginal VFR" weather, which was nothing
more than lots of puffy little clouds I had to dodge. I also had to go
around Huntsville airspace because the KR2 can't climb that high that
quickly, and there was a particularly tall cloud in that direction
anyway. I was tuned to HSV approach just to hear what was going on,
even though I was staying clear of HSV airspace and clouds. I heard him
advising another plane about my direction and altitude, and the other
pilot said he was IMC at the moment anyway, so couldn't see me
regardless. Then I got a call from Approach, by tail number, asking if
I was aware of the other traffic! I acknowledged that I had him "on the
scope", had been watching him, was well above and out of his way, and
thanked him for the oversight. ADS-b is really cool in so many ways,
but that one was a bit unnerving.

I also discovered something cool in the iFlyGPS software on my Android.
There's a data field ("instrument") called "Altimeter Setting" that you
can add to the display, which shows the barometric pressure at the
nearest ADSB reporting station. So you always know what your altimeter
should be set to, rather than having to check around local stations to
get that. This means less wandering all over the sky to me, which is
always good

We applied for a waiver at the Fort Worth Office and one of the questions they
asked was do you have an electrical system. We said yes and that disqualified
us from going out and coming back. They would allow us to move the airplane out
for repairs but we had to have an ADSB before we came back

I was hoping there was a "wedding cake" airspace around KLTX to sneak
under but it is a 30 mile vale requiring transponder.  That means two
waivers, one to arrive and one to depart several days later.  I may have
ADS-B out by then if I can convince myself to spend the money.  Do you
realize how frightening flying can be when you realize all the airplanes
that are in the air with you. 50 years of flying and I hardly saw
another airplane and now with ADS-B in only they're all over the place.
Equipping with ADS-B out also might scare the hell out of me.

Rob and all,
Glad to hear you have active plans in progress for the KR Gathering at Lee's
Summit. HOPEFULLY this mess that is Corona virus will be at a low spot and
travel will be possible coinciding with the event. Someone posted a question
about the ADS-B requirement due to the proximity of KLXT to KMCI. AOPA
recently published guidance regarding getting a waiver of sorts.
As quoted;
"You'll need to use the FAA's ADS-B ADAPT
https://www.faa.gov/nextgen/equipadsb/adapt/ program to make a request to do
your flight. ADAPT stands for "ADS-B Deviation Authorization Preflight
Tool". You can make your request no more than 24 hours out and no less than
1 hour before. AOPA has put together a ADAPT fact sheet
https://www.aopa.org/advocacy/ads-b-adapt that may be helpful as well."
Looking forward to the 2020 KR Gathering!

KR Gathering 2020

We are still on track to have the KR Gathering the weekend of Sep 11-13 at
Lees Summit Airport (KLXT).

I just talked with the Airport manager. With the current Covid-19
restrictions, it would be cancelled. But no one is projecting they will last
until September. I have not started ordering shirts/hats/meals yet because
of the current situation. I plan to call him back up around the 1st of July
to confirm. The restrictions affect our EAA Chapter as well, but still think
September will be clear.

Side note, the Chiefs are playing the Texans on Thursday night September
10th (if the NFL gets to play). I'll be at the game that evening, but I'll
make sure everything is setup for arrivals, etc.

still "TBD" for date and times. I'll keep looking and post as soon as it
becomes public.

We have a pretty good tailgate group I am in, always fun. That will be open
to any who wish to show up. Kind of like a KR Gathering, but for football.

Thanks,

Rob

Don't rule that out. Please just check and see if single game tickets may
be available. Just for fun.
Maybe other guys might also be interested. Can always make sure I'm there
for game time.
If I leave at sun up, I'll be there by early afternoon.

KR> KR GATHERING 2020 - and a Chiefs game?

2020-03-06 Thread Rob Schmitt via KRnet
We are progressing towards the 2020 KR Gathering. A few had asked if there
might be a Chiefs game that weekend.

We'll the answer is most likely yes, but on Thursday night September 10th.

https://www.kansascity.com/sports/nfl/kansas-city-chiefs/article240899886.html

Since the Chiefs won the Superbowl, they get to open the season with the 1st
official game of the season on Thursday night September 10th. No opponent is
set, and to my knowledge, no single game tickets are on sale yet.

Since it is Thursday night, I plan to go to the game myself. I will not
completely vacate my host duties - everything will be set up at the airport for

so come over here to London Canada; about four hours due east of

I'll second this motion, as Rob's EAA Chapter did a great job hosting us
two years ago. There's no question that MVN is a perfect place for the
Gathering, but Lee's Summit is probably second place, judging from the
Gatherings I've attended over the years. I know some folks would like
to just lock the Gathering down to MVN forever, and that's the way it
was for quite a while until recently. Previously, the Gathering was
moved around the country, usually two years at each place, and then
somewhere different. A little variety is a good thing, and moving it
around exposes the KR to new audiences, and gives some folks who don't
live near Mount Vernon a better chance to make it to a Gathering.

See Rob's message below for more.

KR Enthusiasts;

I am planning to make a pitch at the 2019 KR Gathering to host the 2020
event at Lee's Summit Airport in Missouri (KLXT). I understand a vote will
be required and the location needs to be approved. I also wanted to ensure
the KR Net folks have an opportunity to review this as well regardless of if
they can attend this year's Gathering.

We held the 2017 Gathering at our airport and would like the opportunity to
host it once again in 2020.

Summary is as follows;

Proposal for KR Gathering 2020
Lee's Summit Airport (LXT), Missouri

Event Organizer - Rob Schmitt (KR2S - N1852Z)
Dates: September 10-13, 2020

This event has been presented to both the Airport Manager (John
Ohrazda), and the host EAA Chapter 91.
Both organizations a very supportive and willing to host.
EAA Chapter 91 will support with their facilities for main gathering
space.
Airport will support with equipment, contracts as required, hangers
for aircraft if needed due to adverse weather, and a fuel discount.

Airport Description

Two Runways 18/36 is over 5,000 ft, Runway 11/29 is over 4,000 ft.
No control Tower

The airport is in the ADSB Mandatory Veil (30 nm) for Kansas City.
There are no longer any exceptions for this. All aircraft will need to have
ADSB out to operate in/out of the airport legally.

Camping will be allowed again at the north west corner of the
airport.

EAA Chapter 91 Facilities

Main Hanger with Chapter Presentation Room
Overhead Projector
Kitchen, Refrigerators
Grilling equipment
Tools and equipment for aircraft repair if need
Restrooms, but no showers

EAA Chapter 91 has conducted several major events in the past to include the
2017 KR Gathering. The Chapter conducts monthly Young Eagles events in
conjunction with a Pancake Breakfast during the Summer months.

Other Considerations
Nearest RV Campground with hookups - Lake Jacomo approx. 3 Miles
away

KR> KR Gathering forum change

2019-08-14 Thread Mark Langford via KRnet

KRnetHeads,

As I mentioned earlier, something crazy happened at last year's
Gathering and I volunteered to arrange the forums this year. That's
kind of like hiring the fox to watch the hen house, as there have been
times when I thought we spent too much time on forums and not enough
time trying to answer builder questions one-on-one, or maybe even just
socializing with new builders. In a conversation with Larry Flesner, he
made the comment that the least we could do is to concentrate on matters
concerning KRs, and I agree completely.

So.we're cancelling the Wings "Winter Preparedness" forum that was
previously scheduled for Friday. After all, the EAA has at least one
opportunity per week to watch a "Wings-qualifying" presentation, and
there are many others to choose from as well. Instead, we may have a
general Q&A session where folks in the audience are free to ask whatever
KR related questions they have to a panel of several of us that think we
know enough to be helpful, and see how that goes. Of course, anybody's
free to stop me and ask whatever they want alsoit's not like I have
somewhere else I'd rather be, and I'm sure most others feel the same way.

For a preliminary schedule of the upcoming KR Gathering, check the
"Fly-In Schedule" link at http://www.krgathering.net . During the
Gathering, we can keep an updated list on the white board in the meeting
room, so folks can stop by and see what's up next or if there are
changes to times or anything else. I'm still scheduled to give a Friday
afternoon forum on First Flights (it's labeled "What to do when the fan
stops turning" in the schedule), but it will be similar to the one I did
last year, but emphasizing some essential things to get in order before
your first flight. If you've been flying your KR for years, don't feel
like you have to show upmy feelings won't be hurt if there's only
one guy there, as long as he gets something helpful out of it. I'll try
to keep this thing short.

KR> KR Gathering 2020

2019-08-14 Thread Rob Schmitt via KRnet
KR Enthusiasts;

Summary is as follows;

Proposal for KR Gathering 2020
Lee's Summit Airport (LXT), Missouri

Event Organizer - Rob Schmitt (KR2S - N1852Z)
Dates: September 10-13, 2020

This event has been presented to both the Airport Manager (John
Ohrazda), and the host EAA Chapter 91.
Both organizations a very supportive and willing to host.
EAA Chapter 91 will support with their facilities for main gathering
space.
Airport will support with equipment, contracts as required, hangers
for aircraft if needed due to adverse weather, and a fuel discount.

Airport Description

Two Runways 18/36 is over 5,000 ft, Runway 11/29 is over 4,000 ft.
No control Tower

The airport is in the ADSB Mandatory Veil (30 nm) for Kansas City.
There are no longer any exceptions for this. All aircraft will need to have
ADSB out to operate in/out of the airport legally.

Camping will be allowed again at the north west corner of the
airport.

EAA Chapter 91 Facilities

Main Hanger with Chapter Presentation Room
Overhead Projector
Kitchen, Refrigerators
Grilling equipment
Tools and equipment for aircraft repair if need

EAA Chapter 91 has conducted several major events in the past to include the
2017 KR Gathering. The Chapter conducts monthly Young Eagles events in
conjunction with a Pancake Breakfast during the Summer months.

Other Considerations

away

far have been a dismal failure at it.One thing we plan to repeat

I took a look at a photo of FD93 on https://www.airnav.com/airport/FD93
and it looks to me like there are some pretty tall trees on both ends of
the runway. I too was thinking about dropping in, but said "not for a
KR" after seeing that photo. After clearing the trees on landing,
you'll float so far that a considerable amount of the runway will be
behind you when you touch down. I'm not willing to take that chance.
I'm guessing that's why Jeff Scott said he'd fly down in the Super Cub.

KR> KR Gathering NW Florida

2019-04-13 Thread Samuel Spanovich via KRnet
That strip is pretty close (~130 NM) from my current location, and is very
close to NAS Whiting Field and NAS Pensacola where the Navy trains their
student aviators in the T-6B and student NFOs in the T-45C. I am very familiar
with the area and would love to come down and visit sometime on a weekend if
you’re okay with it. Be warned, it will be my first landing on a grass strip.

If anybody is new to that area, the airspace is very busy: there is general
aviation, commercial airliners, and LOTS of Military traffic from the two Navy
bases as well as some Air Force traffic out of Eglin (F-35s included). With
that in mind, it is very easy to have a close call with one, so be prepared for
a lot of very busy air traffic controllers, as well as a lot of student
aviators with their hands full with an instructor screaming at them in the back
:D. You also will hear a lot of “Remain Clear of the Class C” from ATC. Flight
following is strongly encouraged anytime you are within the A-292.

Not to take away from my previous comments, but do enjoy the area. It is
absolutely beautiful to fly around. KJKa, Jack Edwards (40-50 NM west) is one
of my favorite places to fly into, and the Pensacola Museum of Naval Aviation
is absolutely incredible awesome.

“Shooter”, “Black Bird”, and “Red Knight” are all call signs for T-6Bs, so if
you hear one on the radio, be prepared to see one screaming past you at 200-250
KIAS.

Also keep an eye out for the Blue Angels practicing!

Thank you for the invite.

To all KR owners and flyers, Every now and again we hear from someone on
this email list that has a flying KR but does not come to the Gathering.
Please, If there is any way possible for you to come this year we would love
to meet and get to know you. There is an old saying A stranger is just a
friend that you haven't met yet I know that anyone that is crazy enough
to fly one of these small airplanes is someone that I want to meet and I'm
sure we would become good friends. Looking forward to seeing you there. Any
questions about the Gathering, feel free to call me. Mike.

Really nice summery of this year's Gathering. Thank you John Bouyea. Your web
page not only captured the planes, but also some of the flavor of this year's
event. Roger, Rob, and Robert were doing introductory rides for builders and
wannabe builders. I saw Rob and Roger coming and going a lot. Thanks so much
for sharing the KR experience with so many as I have no doubt your
introductions will help others when it comes to their upcoming first flights.

I had recently reached the conclusion that the KR line had enjoyed a good run,
but was about done. It was really good to be proven wrong by seeing so many
builders that are so close to finishing. If half of them complete their
aircraft and fly in next year, it's going to be an event not to be missed.
This year we had a number of Continental and VW powered planes, as well as a
Lycoming powered KR, and another soon to be flying with a 2SI two stroke, but
for the second consecutive year, other than Bill Clapps appearance with his
Turbo Corvair Saberwing, there were no Corvair powered KRs present. I know a
number of builders that are closing in on the finish line are building with
Corvairs, so let's get them up and going to represent the breed.

John, thank you for hosting and supporting the KR Web site. You are doing a
fabulous job.

2018-09-17 Thread John Bouyea via KRnet
We had a great Gathering in Mt. Vernon. If you weren't there, you were
missed. If you were there, you had a blast too, just like everyone else!

I have several photos I'll share along with many other attendees who already
have shared their photos. I'll start working on that tomorrow.

Today, I got the new tail wheel on, mounted the new Sterba prop and ran it
up. Just need to mount the cowl and get off the ground after work.

Here's a group shot as a teaser for things to come along with some notes and
an invitation for how you can make the next Gathering even better.

Stay tuned.

The Gathering is just days away and final details are being ironed out

KR> KR Gathering Event Update

2018-07-07 Thread John Bouyea via KRnet
Welcome to Tom & Stephen, the latest to register for the 2018 KR Gathering.
Just 68 days to the return to Mt. Vernon's airport.

As a reminder, this is a "no-host" event. What we mean by that is the
overall duties are carried by a group of attendees, rather than a single
person organizing the entire event. If you'd like to see a particular topic
covered or to do a specific activity, make some plans and volunteer to make
it happen. The list of known/ planned activities is found on
http://krgathering.net on the [Fly-In Schedule] link. The people
participating in planning different aspects of the event are found on the
[Fly-In Contacts] page.
Send us a message of what you'd like to take on and we'll get it into the
schedule.

Looking forward to a great 46th anniversary of KR flight!

Larry,
Thanks for letting me know it arrived as mine just got here yesterday! Langford wrote most of the copy and did the initial document layout so he completed a large part of the job. I did the database stroking, final layout, printing and mailing.

To everyone,
I made the promise at Lee's Summit to help promote the Gathering to all KR registered owners current with the FAA. I went back to the end of 2017 and found just under 200 airplanes. Flyers went to these registered owners. Some are in museums and they got a flyer also. Better to over promote than under-notify.
Hopefully, we get a bunch of new attendees and the "old regular" Gathering attendees will get to gawk at some "new to us" airplanes and meet their owners.
Remember, just 109 days until the biggest KR event of the year!

Larry,
Thanks for letting me know it arrived as mine just got here yesterday! Langford
wrote most of the copy and did the initial document layout so he completed a
large part of the job. I did the database stroking, final layout, printing and
mailing.

To everyone,
I made the promise at Lee's Summit to help promote the Gathering to all KR
registered owners current with the FAA. I went back to the end of 2017 and
found just under 200 airplanes. Flyers went to these registered owners. Some
are in museums and they got a flyer also. Better to over promote than
under-notify.
Hopefully, we get a bunch of new attendees and the "old regular" Gathering
attendees will get to gawk at some "new to us" airplanes and meet their owners.
Remember, just 109 days until the biggest KR event of the year!

KR> KR Gathering update

2018-03-15 Thread Ppaulvsk via KRnet
I'm working on finalizing the forums for this year's gathering.   I do have
room for another fourm.  If anyone has an idea and would like to do one. This
year we'll have two outside guest that will be doing forums.  Tim Hoversten
from EAA Headquarters. He will be doing a fourm on how to buy a home-built
airplane  and how to.take over someone else's project.  He will also be one of
the judges. The other guest is Leland Widick. He is a designated pilot Examiner
based at Mount Vernon.  He will be presenting a Wings safety seminar.  For who
are participating in the wings safety program so you don't have to do your
biennial flight reviews.  You will get credit for this seminar. We're still
looking for door prizes for the drawing.  If your company or a company that you
know of would like to provide items.  Will post their company on our website as
a sponsor.

KR> KR Gathering 2017

2017-09-29 Thread Stephen Hubbert via KRnet
I would like to thank Robert Schmitt and the EAA Chapter 91 for the great time
in Lee's Summit.
This was my OSH and Biplane Fly-in this year, since I was unable to attend
either of these.
I really liked having the KR's to look at, haven't got to do that for quite a
while. I'm partial to the
KR-2 (no "S"!) and would like to see more of them next year. We need some
KR-1's also!
My wife and I met some new friends and enjoyed the food.
My wife has a simple solution to the Gathering on the west coast...why not have
a KR Gathering West?
Most of us east of the Rockies may not make it, but I'm sure there are lots of
KR's on the west
side of the mountains.
If you weren't there this year, plan to make it next year at Mt. Vernon.

Larry,

Gosh, I didn't know the weather man was able to predict the winds at Lee's
Summit 3 days in advance like that? Two days ago the weather looked like
potential rain and now it looks like beautiful weather all 4 days - except for
the south winds. Who really knows.

The runway status has not changed. The FAA has to do a final inspection before
it can open. The airport says it is on track for Friday morning to open, but no
bets on this either.

Sorry, please pray and make your sacrifice to the KR Gods for perfect weather
for us and a clean FAA inspection.

Thanks,

Rob

KR> KR Gathering Location

2017-08-26 Thread Daniel Heath via KRnet
All this talk about the KR Gathering, makes me wish that my third airplane was
going to be another KR. This is not so much that it is a great little
airplane, but that it has a long tradition of family that comes with it. I
hope that when I finish this new airplane, that I will make many more trips to
meet up with the best group of airplane builders and wannabee builders on the
planet. When I do get back into the annual Gatherings, I won't be showing off
my latest updates on a KR, but will be showing off a new engine that would make
an awesome addition to any KR.

I will miss y'all this year, but sure hope to be there next year, so please
choose a great place.

PS: My trip to the McMinnville gathering was the best vacation of my life.
Thanks to the host who stepped up for that location.

This year we had four KRs and maybe 20 people attend the KR Forum at
OSH. Attendance to the Forum is so bad that I've considered not doing
it, but I feel obligated to at least keep KRs on the radar there. And
almost all of those who attend the OSH forum are KRnet members who also
show up at the Gatheringsthere simply for the opportunity to hang
out with the rest of the KR gang for a little while (they're certainly
not there because they expect anything new out of me!) Contrast that

Regardless, the folks who attend the Gathering will continue to vote for
location of the next year's venue. At this point, it looks like MVN.
If anybody else is going to volunteer to host it elsewhere, it would be
prudent to give the attendees a pitch now, so we can research the
location ourselves, rather than be caught off guard guessing that it
will work out. For that reason, I'm assuming that the MVN default will
win again next year, and I encourage somebody to consider hosting it
elsewhere for 2019...

I would suggest you show up at the gathering and make your pitch at the
Banquet, for either OSH, or your home airport. That's the official vote and
the only one that counts. Steve did so a few years ago and the next Gathering
was held in Chino. Just in case you missed it 2 of the last 4 Gatherings were
on the west coast. Did you bother to attend either???

Seems kind of odd that you complain that you can't afford to travel more than
once a year, but you want everyone else to go to the most expensive aviation
venue in the country to accommodate your unwillingness to travel. The KR crowd
is notoriously cheap and the KR Gathering would be one of the least expensive
fly-ins you would ever attend. As for the forum content, we have had Dynon and
numerous other vendors show up to pitch their products. The forums at the
Gathering are geared specifically to the KR Builders. Show up. Make your
pitch. If everyone wanted to move the Gathering to OSH, that would be fine by
me. I doubt I would attend, but would be happy for those that do.

Re: KR> KR Gathering at OSH?

2017-08-25 Thread svd via KRnet

"As for moving the Gathering all over the country, you are a bit late to that
discussion. We moved it to Chino,CA in 2014, then to McMinnville, OR in 2015.
That pretty much excluded the east coast folks and many of the midwesterners
for 2 years."

Yes, I agree that any gathering venue faces an inherent problem - either it is
moved around to make it available to folks who won’t or can’t travel 1500
miles, or it is in a “central” location so that one coast or the other only has
to travel 1500 miles.

If we are set on a “central” gathering location, then it seems the decision is
between a quiet, KR only, friendly space, or AirVenture - a loud crowded
distracting event where hotels are very expensive and fun/instructional flight
is restricted.

Seems like a clear choice, but:

1) OSH is a massive event, which is exactly why I suggest it. AirVenture is a
loud crowded and distracting “zoo”. But even at the AirVenture zoo, we can have
a quiet side location where we can set up large meeting/shade tents, food prep,
and hands on KR workshops. Camping facilities are pretty good (showers, power,
bathrooms). And external aviation resources can’t be beat anywhere in the
world. If we want Garmin, Dynon, Revmaster, Hummel, Jabaru, ICOM, etc to give
us personalized KR focused presentations – OSH is the place to do it.

2) The hotel situation can’t be fixed at OSH – they are hard to book and bloody
expensive. So if hotels are a deal breaker, then I agree OSH is not the place
to have the gathering. But for me, I’d much rather camp.

3) Hangers – also not going to happen at OSH, so again, if that’s a deal
breaker its out.

4) I’d much rather go to the KR Gathering than look at a few pictures of it on
a computer – and I think the KR Gathering would benefit from having more of our
members attend. How many more of our members would be able to attend if we did
it OSH? I think a lot. Perhaps not? We will only know if we ask, survey,
try. At best, I can only budget only one cross country fly-in a year until I
retire in 10 or 15 years. I think this is a situation many of us are in. How
many of our members are in a similar situation?

RE:

“I'd say the average number of new "KR tire-kickers" that show up is probably
three, so I'm not convinced there's a ground-swell of potential KR builders
there.” -

My major concern is a Gathering venue that allows more of our members to attend
(which is what I think AirVenture affords). Secondary concerns include:

Improving technical content, variety and opportunity of the Gathering.

Improving public exposure. We don’t need a ground swell, but quality
exposure and interactions can only help to improve KR aircraft and hopefully
increase our safety. It could also only help to improve the health KR suppliers

Improving AirVenture. Experimental / homebuilt aviation should be the hart
of AirVenture and bringing back type clubs to improve their airplanes and their
experience of their airplanes just what AirVenture needs. I think it is also
what we need.

I really think we should do the Gatherings at AirVenture, but if thats not in
the cards I’d be delighted to host a Gathering at KEDU or KDWA - both near
Sacramento CA. Both are hotter than hell during the summer, but camping would
be available. I’d be happy to work with others to host at other central CA
airports that may be more a conducive/pleasant venue. We could set up
shade/forum tents - and I think we could get Steve from nVAero here if the
trolls on this list haven’t quashed that.

RE:

“If you've never attended a KR Gathering, I'd say that you … are not qualified
to criticize the current arrangement”

or

“I have attended both regularly for several years with my KR, so I think I am
qualified to comment.”

or

“Talking it out on KRnet is a good way to get a consensus, but the vote that
counts is at the (Gathering) Banquet.”

I’m just raising an issue that I think is worth considering and may strengthen
our community and improve our airplanes. I’m hoping you didn’t really mean to
be that exclusionary. If you believe that the only members who’s concerns are
valid or count are the ones that attend the Gathering, then ok. I didn’t
realize.

KR> KR Gathering at OSH?

2017-08-25 Thread Oscar Zuniga via KRnet
To go along with what Jeff wrote, the annual Pietenpol and Hatz gathering is
held at the Brodhead, WI airport the weekend before OSH. Brodhead is 91 NM
from OSH, so it's within range for Piets who want to make the trek to OSH but
far enough away to avoid the general hubbub. Needless to say, with turf
runways the Brodhead event is MUCH more laid back and enjoyable than the
beehive at OSH.

Disclaimer though: I have never been to a KR Gathering, to OSH, or to Brodhead
so my information and opinions are all based on PIREPs from those who have.

Re: KR> KR Gathering at OSH?

2017-08-24 Thread Ken Hurley via KRnet
Last year was my first year to attend. I thought the get-together was
excellent. This year's event hasn't happened but it sounds like Rob is
doing a great job. I won't for to this year's event but will in 18'. I live
in SW Missouri and I thought about hosting in 19. However maybe someone
would like to host it.

I'll be posting some pics of my new to me KR2 soon.

Re: KR> KR Gathering at OSH?

2017-08-24 Thread Jeff Scott via KRnet

Some other groups host a fly-in near Oshkosh as an alternative to Oshkosh, but
also close enough that the members can hop over to Oshkosh for a day or two if
they choose.  For example, the SuperCub crowd does a great Fly In over an New
Holstein, WI.  They hold a STOL contest, Fly Young Eagles, do several Fly Outs,
and hold a pig roast.  It goes on all week.  That way those like me that would
just as soon avoid the mass of humanity can, and those that want to go join the
masses can do so.  But it's also important to keep in mind that these guys have
numerous fly-ins all over the country every year, so they get together as a
group a lot.

From my personal perspective, if the KR Gathering moved to Oshkosh, I would
simply be done with the gatherings. You would find me over at New Holstein
with the SuperCub bunch.  I suspect I am far from the only one that would skip
OSH. I simply do not like being part of the masses of humanity and I could care
less about watching military and aerobatic air shows. If I was going to fly
into OSH, I would likely fly the Supercub so I can haul all my camping gear.
The KR Gathering is all about KRs. In my opinion, it would be disastrous to
dilute the KR folks into the masses at Oshkosh.

As for moving the Gathering all over the country, you are a bit late to that
discussion. We moved it to Chino,CA in 2014, then to McMinnville, OR in 2015.
That pretty much excluded the east coast folks and many of the midwesterners
for 2 years. There were only a couple of us that flew to both. In the time I
have been attending the Gatherings, it has been hosted in AR, CA, OK, IL, KY,
OR, and this year will be in MO. I would call that spreading it around.
During that time, we found that there is no place that offers us the quality of
venue at a central location like what Larry Flesner found for us by hosting in
Mt Vernon, IL. It is simply a perfect venue with a large open airport,
multiple runways, lots of ramp space, available hangar space, available meeting
rooms, restaurant on the field to cater, camping and showers on the airport,
etc, etc, etc. It simply doesn't get any better than that, and they make it
clear that whether Larry hosts or not, Mt Vernon always wants us back. That's
the reason why we have agreed to the central location with a fabulous venue and
incredible hospitality on an every other year basis. It wasn't an accident.
We love that place just like the SuperCub guys love New Holstein.

If your interest is in OSH, I would suggest you host a get together on Monday
of the convention as there are a few KRs there and some of the KR guys, namely
Mark with Larry's help, host the KR forum. You will find some of the KR
faithful at the forum.
