Well done on your web page. That looks a VERY sturdy duel control system

I see you only have 60 L of fuel, is that correct?. That seems a small
amount or a 110hp engine.

All the best, keep up the great work.

Hello everyone, It seems to be a little slow on the net so I'll give a quick

cowl, which is not made yet. 99 percent of the sanding is behind me now and I
could not be happier ( Sanding sux ). I am looking forward to hanging the o-200

2011-10-03 Thread Dan Heath
Some days you go to the hangar or shop to work on your project and after
working all day, wonder, what did I get done today. I have had a lot of
those days lately, but starting on Saturday, everything started to fall into
place and the obstacles are just vanishing. As I wrote the other day, my
engine is now running, the coils are good, the Crane unit is good and the
cowling is almost fitted. It actually surprised me how well it fit after
trimming. It is made for a KR2S, and my plane is a KR2, so I expected that
there would be much more difficulty getting it to fit.

The Ellison EFS-3A was sent 2nd day air to Ben and it was supposed to arrive
there tomorrow. Today I got a call from Ben Ellison, telling me that some
polishing compound had gotten into the first 4 holes in the needle. They
have corrected that and are shipping it back tomorrow.

I don't know how to deal with all this "Progress Prosperity", but I am
loving it. Oh, and one of my RV friends is going to paint my baffles for me
when he paints his this week. How good can it get?

Dan, you're giving me too much credit regarding "putting a lot of time into
it"...I was only there for two hours. I had to leave early due to a line of
thunderstorms that was about to force me to spend the night at your house.
In those two hours, I properly set the timing (statically), and quickly
declared the electronic ignition dead. I then ascertained that the spark
was intermittent, and suspected the condensor because it was obviously
arcing internally while testing (I could hear it from three feet away). I
bypassed the coil joiner just in case (your phone message said it was bad,
but I'm not sure that it is...doesn't jive with testing, and is comprised of
two big diodes that are "polarity sensitive").

Given that we didn't have time to get a new condensor, and I didn't bring
one with me (I meant to), I had to leave before the condensor was swapped
out. But since you swapped out the condensor AND the reversed polarity on
the coil (which you assured me was correct) at the same time, I didn't
pursue it, knowing that reversing polarity on the coil may slightly affect
the high RPM performance and the overall life of the plugs, but will work
fine under all but extreme use.

If the coils were wired in reverse, that explains the fried electronic Crane
module. One nanosecond of reversed connection will fry it. For those who
are wondering, the red stripe goes to the positive side of the coil, the
yellow striped one goes to the negative.

What I'm trying to say is that your "divine intervention" may have flown in
with "N56ML" on the tail!

KR> KR Progress

2011-09-30 Thread Dan Heath
Some of you know that I took my KR2 out of service over 18 months ago, to
put fuel in the wings and install the Corvair. The fuel in the wings was
finished several months ago, but I could not get the installation of the
Corvair finished in time for this year's Gathering. I have been having
trouble getting the engine to start now that the installation is done, and
it has nothing to do with the engine, but, it has everything to do with the
idiot who was doing the installation, me.

Both Matt Elder and Mark Langford spent a lot of their time trying to solve
the mystery and earlier this week, I got an email from WW offering to come
up and help me find the problem. However, today, I must have gotten some
divine intervention. I could not stop the thought in my head that I should
check the polarity on the coils, even though I knew which side was which. I
installed the coils between the shelves, that made it so you could not see
the marking on the coil, but I knew which side was + and which was -, but I
just had to check even though I tried all known methods of distraction to
keep from going through the required contortions to loosen the bolts to
remove them.

So upon discovery that the idiot had struck again, I re-oriented the coils
so I can see the markings and made my own markings on the coils and the
shelf under which they are installed. I re-connected everything and it
fired off on the first blade. It continues to run great as long as I hold
in the primer button, but won't run on the carb. Sending the carb back to
Ellison on Monday, overnight, to see what dumb thing I inadvertently did to
it. I spent about 30 minutes on the phone with Ben Ellison today and he is
just as stumped as me.

This is not a show stopper and I still plan to be at Corvair college in
November.

KR> KR2S Progress report.

2011-07-18 Thread MICHAEL SYLVESTER

Stef, First I covered the wing gap area with this clear, super thin packing
tape. Then I was able to cheat a little. I have a roll of 3 inch wide glass
tape that I cut into about 7 foot long strips. Using 3 layers per side. I was
afraid to wet them all at once on a piece of plastic in fear that when rounding
the leading edge they might kink or wrinkle and since I was a one man operation
the 7 foot long piece would have been hard for me to handle. So after marking
the packing tape where I wanted the strips to lay, I started at the back of the
top, wetting out the glass as I went along. I then went under the wing and
continued the process from front to back, keeping the line as straight as
possible. Then back to the top side to repeat these steps 2 more times. This
worked great for me, I was also afraid that the weight of the glass tape wood
be heavy enough to fall off the underside but the layering system seemed to be
letting the epoxy thicken enough to hold the weight. Let dry, micro the top and
bottom, sand to finish and then just pop off by sliding a thin putty knife
underneath. Sand the edges with long sanding block and your all done except for
painting and attaching.

Mike, as hot as it has been here in Texas, if you were to drag your pile of
sticks outside you wouldn't need any matches, the whole pile would go off with
spontaneous combustion. If you changed your mind at the last minute, that being
two minutes after you drug it outside, then you would need a fire truck QUICK!
Keep up the good work and don't drag it outside until you are ready to mount

KR> More Progress - Cowl Mould

2010-04-06 Thread Scott Watts
Paul,

Your work is a real inspiration. I wish I was just down the street
and could pull a cowl from your mold when you are done. It seems a
shame to put so much work in and only get one cowl out.

Keep up the great work, she's going to be beautiful when done.

FYI, I flew off the test period myself - without insurance. I know it was a

Netters,

The project I started on July 31st, 1974 became an airplane at 1030 today,
August 21st.? Since I am a super senior with a retractable gear, tail dragger,?
I'm having some significant insurance issues.? With a little more tail dragger
experience, I may have to do the testing myself:? When I'm comfortable.? Maybe
after a few hours in type, insurance will be available.

Flying to Mt Vernon this year is highly unlikely, but count me in for 2010,
wherever we go.

Mark, please move me from project to completed on the web site.

KR> Engine progress and set back

2009-05-18 Thread Dan Heath
Well, I re-built my 2180 into a 2276 so I could install the 94 mm Cylinders.
It has almost everything new on it. Initial runs were very encouraging with
the exception of a noise that I could not identify and could not fly with.
So, off came the engine and today, I took it apart and with the help of a
friend, went over every mm of the inside of that engine and could not find
anything that was not in perfect condition. So, it will go back together
and fly. At the 100 hour mark, I will take it apart again and give it a
thorough examination, just to be sure that something bad did not manifest.

Should be back in the air soon. Building sukz.

Been a bit quite on the builder front for a while, here is my latest

I have decided to run Augmentors along my belly to improve cooling

Now the size of these augmentors is an educated guess but based on web
research and a few builders that have done it before.

Well they did call this "Experimental"

On a 4 cylinder opposed engine like a VW or Continental, plumbing a pipe
down each side is about the worst (and easiest to build) exhaust design
you can make. That's mainly because of the firing order. You'll find
that the two cylinders on one side fire in order, then the two cylinders
on the other side fire in order. That leaves one cylinder opening it's
exhaust valve right into the exhaust from the other cylinder on that
side. Not a very good way for the engine to breath.

A crossover exhaust pairs the front two cylinders together, and the back
two cylinders together. This really is a good exhaust as you will have
one cylinder firing into the crossover pipe once every revolution, but
can also be difficult to build. On a Lycoming engine, this is a good
exhaust as you'll only have a cylinder firing into that half of the
exhaust once per revolution so you'll get some scavenging effect. If you
can fit in tuned lengths into a collector like a powerflow exhaust,
that's even better.

On the smaller Continental engines, there just isn't enough valve overlap
to get much of a scavenge effect from using a crossover exhaust. The cam
is just too mild. Consequently, 4 tuned length pipes will breath as well
as a crossover exhaust or headers into a collector, and is significantly
easier to build.

I think you'll find that most engine builders use a much more aggressive
cam with significant valve overlap in the VW aircraft engines, so using
either a crossover type exhaust or a 4 into 1 tuned header would work
very well.

A little reading at http://www.aircraftexhaust.net/crossovers.html will
explain their opinion on this. There is lots of good reading about
various exhaust types for aircraft at http://www.aircraftexhaust.net.
And more good reading about how a tuned exhaust works at
http://www.powerflowsystems.com/exhaust_process.php.

On a 6 cylinder engine like the Corvairs, a pair of tuned length 3 into 1
headers are the ideal. However, guys that have done a lot of this tell
me that the 6 cylinder engines don't seem to suffer as badly from using a
simple log down either side as the 4 cylinder engines do. The only proof
I could offer to support that would be the fact that Powerflow doesn't
sell any tuned exhaust systems for the 6 cylinder Continental or Lycoming
engines, but are continuously adding more STCs for less numerous aircraft
using 4 cylinder Lycoming engines.

I noticed on Jeff's web site that the Cont cannot take advantage of having a
crossover. They claim that the VW can, I wonder why? Also, I have noticed
that the Vairs don't use crossover. Is this just for convenience, or does
the same apply?

Speaking of progress, my engine bottom end is at Roy's for the front bearing
and some other work, and my pistons, rods, cylinders and stuff are at Larry
s for boring, balancing, and stuff.

Still too many decisions to make on the Vair. Dual ignition/Starter set
up/oil pan. After that, it is just money and time. I am keeping a complete
spread sheet of the parts that I am using, who does the work, where the
parts come from, and what they cost. I am very interested to see what a
Vair that is a combination of Professional and Amateur (me) built, costs.

Tonight I cut four more holes in the front of my lower cowl half: a 2" hole
for carb air, a 2" hole for oil cooler air, a 1" hole for gascolator
airblast and a 1" hole just because I could and it makes the hole pattern
symmetrical. That's in addition to the two 4" holes previously done for
engine cooling air. Each of the inlet holes gets a Lopresti-style jet inlet

KR> slow progress

2008-10-12 Thread Mark Langford
NetHeads,

I don't know about the rest of you guys that are almost finished, but I'm
just about tired of folks asking me when it's going to fly! As proof that
I'm still a long way away, I offer the photo at
http://home.hiwaay.net/~langford/wing_art.jpg , which clearly shows that I'm
still knee-deep in the dreaded wing-sanding phase. The rest of the plane
has the coat of urethane primer that it's going to fly in for the next year,
but the wings were still coated with five layers of Smooth Prime, which
takes some effort to sand away. And this "little chore" is not even on my
list of 32 things I need to finish before I fly it!I'm not far from
shooting a coat of urethane primer on the bottom of this one, but I've still
got the other side of this one and a whole 'nuther one to go.

I'm getting there though, just not fast enough to make the Gathering this
year. To go ahead and answer that question, I really think I'll be flying
it in November. I kinda like the idea of first flights in the Winter,
because cooling issues will not be as big a problem, and I'll have time to
fine tune it as things warm up in the Spring. I'm going to get some Swift
time on Saturday, to work on my taildragger skills some more. After talking
to Bill Clapp, I really feel like I could fly mine with the skills I have
right now, but I guess we'll see about that.

See y'all at the Gathering...

maintenance manuals. I am using the Grove gear and brakes and will have a
tail-dragger. So last week I started assembling pieces and drilling holes.
You can view my progress at
http://mywebpage.netscape.com/n2w6/landinggear.html . By next week hope to
have some completed assemblies hanging off a main spar.

Mine are not bent. I couldn't figure out how to get them in the boat after
they were done. If the boat wasn't already built I would have left off the
bottom ply until after the spar was in and got the spars in.

Brain Are you making bent spars? Did you take any pictures? Can you send
them to me if you did? I am going to do that, and I think I have a game plan
but would like to see what you did.

KR>Canopy Progress

2008-10-12 Thread Scott Cable
Dan,
Yeah, that's the beauty of Dana's suggestion. I love simple too.
Sounds like your canopy is TOP Drawer, I glad you're making progress.
Speaking of which
My Lower Canopy Latches are installed. Along with lengths of 1/16" braided
cable. The cable inserts into the end of the latch as is secured by the
tyniest allen wrench in my toolbox. Man I like these latches!
I'm adding fiberglass "T" stiffeners and angles to the forward "deck" skin.
These T's and angles are already added to the forward canopy skin. I took a
sample part with me to work the other day. A bunch of Strength Engineers work
near my office. This one placed the T upside down between his desk and
reference table, placed his upper body weight on it. He couldn't believe how
strong it was! He didn't break or even make it crack!

The Forward "Deck" is only about 4 inches long! So do you still want to call
it a forward deck?
I'm also in the middle of making another tool out of foam to make an angle
from.
This angle after it's cured will be attached to the aft face of the firewall,
and the inside of the forward skin. It will be bonded to the skin, although I
haven't decided if I'm going to permanently attach this "deck" or use platenuts
and countersunk screws.

I know it's not exactly simple, but... It's so light weight, I can't help but
use this thing somewhere...
I was rumaging around my basement boxes when I found a couple of power
lumbar motor assemblies. It's attached to a plastic hosed cable drive
transmission.
The cable travel is 2.0625. The motor and transmission are fully reversable.
I will add a drive lug to my right side gooseneck hinge to attach the end of
the drive cable to. Add a micro switch to the canopy latches that is nomally
closed
I now have a power canopy, No pnuematic (gas Lift Arms) struts needed. The
motor assembly weighs a lot less than the lift armsAdded benefit:
Adjustable canopy opening height, . at the press of a switch.

Hee hee heee. I love simple, but I love Sneaky even better

Window tapes have been applied and tomorrow I will remove the safety angles
at the lower ends of the windshield and tape that in. Then it is on to fill
and sand. I will bet that I have the top of this plane painted by the end of
this month.

You wouldn't believe how big this canopy looks. It is normal size, but it
looks as big as an RV. I love it.

2008-10-12 Thread Scott Cable

Dan and Netters:

Well, you were right-sort-of!

I worked all day on the canopy. After I floxed in place the aft frame, and
canopy sills, and everything dried overnight, it still wasn;t nearly
torsionally rigid enough for my like-ing,

So I added a ply of BID over the canopy sills and forward.

This helped some, but still not rigid enough.

I bought a 2' x4' piece of 1 inch Lasta-foam ($35 !!!) and fabricated an "H"
frame in the area forward of the canopy. I floxed it into position, and added 1
ply of BID over it on the bias to the ply below it. The "H" frame is bonded to
the BID ply with 1 ply of 2 inch tape and flox.

That really made the whole structure rigid now.

I also installed 9 MS21075-08 Platenuts into the Spinner Bulkhead using
Hi-Tigue solid rivets. After finishing the flange (Scoth-Brite and Alodine)
you can't even see where the rivet heads are!

I actually sat in my airplane today for the first time doing a canopy fit.
Plenty of headroom, Michelle caught me making airplane noises (just taxi-ing!!!)

I accomplished my goal: Build all of the Fuselage Top by 2004. It's all built,
fiberglass-wise. Onto making hinges, and installing the latches.

Keep Building!

2008-10-12 Thread Timothy Bellville
HI everyone,
I just finished putting the third coat of smooth -prime on the bottom of my KR2
. This marks the completion of the retrofit to the fixed gear (Fuselage mount,
spring gear from great plains,).
This stuff is great to work with and sands very well, to bad it is so expensive.
I made my mounting brackets from 6x8x1/2" , 6061 extruded alum. angle (X3) and
doublers on the forward part of the spar to clear the cross member on the front
of the spar. I cut three 4x6" holes in the floor , and used the original holes
on the spar for mounting the angle brackets.
With her on her back I did the alignment of the spring gear, and used the
original holes for mounting to the brackets. I then cut a foam wedge and
glassed it in to the bottom of the fuselage to flair in the leading edge of the
gear.
Filling the holes from the original gear was a lot of sanding but straight
forward, and now you could never tell it had retracts.
I plan on top coating the belly before I put her back on her gear,as to not
have to do it on my back, but to also have it done, and allow me to concentrate
on the top.

The folks at Ellison Fluid Systems are terrific!

I shipped them my EFS-2 to have them take a look, and
it came back Thursday (about 1 week later). $62.00 later
and all the parts that might have been gummed up by my
bonehead use of Auto gas, then letting it sit for two years
has been cleared up!

I had my KR running like a champ this afternoon. I was
going to taxi test, but forgot to remove the wheel chocks,
then when I got around to removing it, and putting the
cowling back on... well dummy had left the master on
and the battery hadn't been fully charged... so
at any rate, it wouldn't start.

I think I have a problem with my tach reading 1/2 speed.
My compu-Fire ignition has two leads from the two coils,
and I only have one hooked up... that's my suspicion.
I am talking with the COMPU-FIRE folks via email to see
what the "tach" adaptor they sell really is. I suspect
it is a couple of diodes.

My website is back on-line... some of the newer KR-netters
who don't know who the ** I am, might like to check it
out. http://n541ry.us (n541ry.com is still tied up by
someone else and they won't give it back yet).

When I get the pictures I took today into the computer
I will update the site so it isn't all FLASH stuff, by
putting some of the jpg's back on the page from Perry
(etc)... but in the meantime, you can see my old
site from a year ago at the new link.

The recent LED nav light stuff has given me some crazy
ideas about lighting I'm thinking that if they
work out I will share them...

Ross,

Those movie clips are really cool. Are they on the KRNET.ORG site yet? I
will be glad to post them on our site if you are willing to make them
available to me.

Also, unless you are commercial and really want a .COM, you could just go
and pick up a .ORG. I can't imagine why someone would want your domain name
when it is your N number that they can't have.
