KR> Questions from Australia

2008-10-12 Thread Tim Haynes
Hi From Tim in Australia Fellow KR owners

I am shortly to take delivery of a partly assembled KR2. The fuselarge is at
the "Boat" stage and the wing main spars are complete. I have a number of
questions.

It is my intention to use carbon fibre inplace of fiber glass.

Can anyone advise me on how thin we can use the carbon to either equal or
exceed the strengh of the fibreglass used on the KR2 in realation to the
buckeling of skins etc.

I would like to increse the wingspan to that of the KR2S. Is it practical to do
this by attaching extended anti Vortex Tips to ths std KR2 wing. The tips will
be made from carbonfibre.

What is the new airfoil you all write about ? What are the advantages and
disadvantages found.

Regarding the Tail Fin and Tail plane dimensions when considering the wingspan
modification. Shall i just use the KR2S Specs. Or has someone found a superior
combination.

Last question. The fuselarge is the 41 inch wide verson. The construction stage
it is at, seems to say it will not be practical to strectch to the KR2S lengh.
Is there any problem to increase wing and tailfeathers dimensions re KR2S, but
not the Fuselarge.

Out of interest Has anybody cut and streached a fuselarge at the boat stage?

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts.

Regards, Tim

Carbon fiber if 3-4 times stronger than Eglass. However, the wing
construction of the KR2 does not call for 3+ layers of Eglass, so you
will only add cost.
Alternatively, you could consider using the construction methods in
"Advanced Composite Techniques" by Zeke Smith. I hope to build a wing
panel using that method sometime in the next year for test purposes.
I expect it to be both lighter and stronder.

Most of your questions are answered at
http://home.hiwaay.net/~langford/kopinion.html ...

Larry S took care of carbon fiber...since most of the plane is only one
layer of fiberglass cloth, adding one layer of carbon fiber will save you no
weight, although it will cost you more but make the surface stronger and
more resistant to damage.

Jim Hill cut and stretched his KR2 into a KR2S after completion, but only
after he broke the tail during a forced landing. It worked for him and made
it a better plane, but he'd probably be quick to tell you that it was
probably more trouble than it was worth.
