KR> Wynne Assembly Plant

2008-10-12 Thread Colin & Bev Rainey
Well being in Florida has its advantages.
Today I drove over and checked out the Wynne Engine Plant at Massey Ranch
Airport, and let me tell youhis place is chock full of good stuff. They
are thrashing in high gear to be ready for Sun n Fun, so I didn't expect much
but a few words, drop off my list of stuff I wanted from the online catalog,
and feel grateful that they opened the door when I knocked. MAN WAS I MISTAKEN!

I was met by Grace at the door with a very pleasant hello, I will get William,
and you are? Next walks up William, eating a peanut butter and jelly sandwich
I think, and grinning from ear to ear. He greeted me warmly, shook my hand, and
said "Come on, I will give you the tour". I proceeded to walk through an
engine guy's paradise! I love motors, and William does too. There was a wall
covered with Corvair cases, no less than 12 in varying stages of buildup, and
modification, one that looked like Pat Panzerra's, built by a "hot rod" shop
with what the owner called "lots of good stuff", that had the plug wires on all
wrong for starters, LOL! There were 2 skunkworks setups that I wasn't allowed
to see, that will be unveiled at Sun n Fun, the Tri-Motor project, and more

After I forced my bottom jaw back closed, and quit looking like a 2 year old
seeing Santa for the first time, I was actually able to carry on an intelligent
conversation with William, and we discussed my KR2. Well one thing lead to
another, and 2 hours later I drove away with a complete Corvair engine, and
almost all the fixins for an aircraft engine. I talked to my wife all the way
home about the visit. The most impressive thing was not the level of caring
and consideration that everyone there had, but the fact that William himself
stopped what he was doing and helped me for 2 hours, even with Sun n Fun right
around the corner. Anyone can be gracious when they are having a good day, but
everyone there was most interested in ME having a good day, and then smiling
for the effort!

THANKS WILLIAM AND GANG...THAT'S A PROMISE FLYING WITH CORVAIR POWER BY
MEMORIAL DAY OR SOONER!

2008-10-12 Thread Brian Kraut
Exactly the same 2 hours of hospitality I got when I picked up my core.
Good guy indeed. I just wish he would sell all the new parts I need instead
of referring me to catalogs. He is doing us a good service by telling us
where to get the new parts at good prices that he could not sell in low
volumes for less money, but I would gladly pay him an extra 10% to just get
all the correct parts from one place. I suspect that I am not the only one.

Ive helped WW out in the past and hope to do more here in the very near
future - like next week. I know that a lot of people would like to be able
to
get all the "small stuff" from WW directly but it is the fact that everyone
seems to make a different installation that makes it difficult to have a
"kit".
There is a firewall forward kit becoming available for the Zenair 601 and
that includes everything needed - just a bolt on kit. We have a good start on
the KR2 firewall forward kit but not there yet. We have the mounts and are
upgrading a cowling and starter package for it that will reduce hoses and oil
modifications. Just be patient.
A lot of Corvair KR guys went with a rear starter package which
necesitates a lot of customizing and personalized work. As well, I have found
that
most KR folk dont want to spend the $ for a finished package and want to save
money by designing their own. That is why wing skins and preformed parts
dont sell as well. They do require a lot of investment and the person
developing them should be paid accordingly but a lot of us are
cheapskates.
myself included (under 8500.00 so far in mine).

I went out today for the first flight in almost a month. Like I mentioned
before I was doing some mods and cleanup - inspection - work. Beautiful -
6:30 - sunset - 65 degrees - Took off and noticed I climbed like a
bansheegap seals must have helpedreduced power to 3400...climed to
3000 and
leveled off. At 3400 showed an average of 154 mph...not bad. Full power
showed
175 mph - again not too bad...but then i noticed that my rpms had increased
from full power on previous flight of 3800 to this time a 3900 peak full
power. I gained 100 rpm with my mods but very little in mph. I know for sure
a
new prop will have to be checked out. I hope my reconditioned prop gets here
soon to test out. I think that in the last three hundred rpms that I have
run out of prop efficiency. I know this baby has a lot more it can give but
I just need testing time. I came down from 3000 and shot a straight in
approach on 35, on final doing 165 and slowing down to a greaser landing at
50mph. And this at night...The panel lights work better now and having
strobes
helps the tower find me. I wont do very much night flying since I dont have
and attitude indicator yet but it will be nice for landing after dusk and
leaving out early in the mornings on clear days. For now it is ready for Sun
N
Fun. Time to put on a few more hours.. see some more sunsets...

Im still using my Prince 52 X 50 that I used during my test period. I plan
to put on a repitched 52 X 54 Prince and try it before sun n fun to see if I
like it. I need a bit more pitch to take advantage of the powerband I have.
I tend to cruise at somewhere @ 65% power doing 150 on cross country flying
- not bad really - but that is mostly becouse I think I am close to
overreving the prop. With more pitch I should cruise faster. My climb rate
did
improve considerable though with the gap seals.
The Warp drive does provide a lot more static thrust but not as much
high speed thrust as the Sterba prop does. Dont confuse what it does on the
ground to how it acts in the air. My Prince shows very little static thrust
compared to many but is built for higher speeds.
