KR> Folding wings

2013-12-01 Thread Dan Heath
Belly flap, is not in the true sense, a flap. As I understand it, a flap
will give you lift and drag and a belly flap/belly board/speed brake, just
gives you drag. It is good to give you a better view of the runway without
picking up too much speed. With flaps, you will get both, but from the
research I have done, you will not get very much of a lower air speed. If I
recall correctly, the most I have heard is 5 MPH and the least is better
than 2 MPH. If just putting flaps on the center section stub wing, you may
get as much as 3 MPH.

Since I have never installed flaps, I can only give you what I have been
told by several others who have done it.

I completely agree with Marks statements. I had another home built that
used spring taper pins..fairly quick and easy to remove but still kept the
Sonerai 2 at the airport to avoid eventual wear and tear as well as the
inevitable rash and mishaps involved in towing not to mention the real
possibility of another driver doing something to cause an accident.

Well I was thinking along two separate directions. Have some made and sell
them, or, have some built as part of a group build.

At this point I am not interest in sharing or selling the plans. With the
plans and a sample, building some more is not difficult. I would be most
likely trying to do one of the above.

I believe that the wing folding mechanism represents only a small part of
what is necessary to safely remove manipulate and nest the wings.

About those folding wing plans. I Got a set. Still in the envelope with
all the ceertified postage stuff.

Every now and then I wake from retirement slumber and reconnect. While
looking for other things in my file cabinet, I ran across the set of plans
that I purchased from the Col back in 91 (You remember back during the gold
rush). First thing I went to was the page with the "NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN
THAT THE RIGHTS AND PROTECTIONS AFFORDED TO THE MOORE FOLDING WING KIT &
PLAN BY LAW IS STRICTLY ENFORCED IF ABRIDGED BY ANY ENTITY7 AND/OR PATENTS
FOR PROFIT. EACH ORIGINAL SET OF PLANS WILL BE NUMBERED & SIGNED BY COL.
R.W. MOORE."

Next comes the Waiver of liability. In this section he says that if you
are crazy enough to build and use it don't call him if you get hurt.

Missing is any mention of how many I can make with my LEGAL plans. How
many do you guys want., and how much U willing to pay.

Send me the mock up and tell me how many.

PS. Talk is cheap, I might have to ask one of our legal reps

Thats fine! I don't mind that at all. The main thing I'm interested in
is making the process of attaching and stowing the wings easier. This
fixture should allow me to handle the wing less, and support it in
position while I attach the bolts, which is perfectly acceptable to me.

Hey Guys,
There was an entire deal about 'folding wings" a few years back.  Basically
a Mr. Moore had a design for folding wings and had offered one free to the
KR community.  I guess in the hope that the rest of the community would buy
his plans from him for any additional sets.  There was a raffle and I
actually won.  However, I have since acquired a hangar and didn't need it
but still thought it might be a good option.
He never sent me a set of plans but he did send me an actual folding wing
set up.  it's just set up on the spars to show you how it would work.  I
have never used it and have now decided that I will never use it.
Therefore, in the interest of what Mr. Moore was trying to achieve I will
offer it back to the KR community.  I don't know the best way to achieve
that goal.
Is it something that should wait for the next Gathering (Dana can use it as
a raffle prize or even a tech session)?  Should we try to do something like
a prop bank and everybody that uses it send a payment to Mr. Moore (let Mark
keep it)?
I still have all the original emails from back then if anybody wants to
track the story.
I don't want to start a thread that will last forever, but I do want to try
to do what I can for the group.  Thanks.

2010-01-13 Thread R. Human
Actually Mr. Moore directly copied the wing folding arrangement on the
Bower's Fly Baby and John Monnett's Sonerai. It's no more than a sliding
tube with a u joint - the tube slides out at the wing root which provides
support for the spar end and allows the wing panel to rotate, the u joint
allows the wing to fold back parallel to the fuselage. I believe drawings of
the Fly Baby are included in the early Sport Aviation's - do a search on
Oshkosh 365. You still have to deal with unbolting the WAF's.

Actually, I'm glad you brought it up. I had looked at
it and then decided to shelve it as I felt that I
would feel safer with permanently attached wings. I
did speak with Mr. Moore and ask him if I could
transfer my "prize" to some other party and he was
agreeable with that. They are his proprietary design,
so they can't just be given out to the net at large.
But they could be given to some other party who might
use them, show them off and Mr. Moore could then sell
some designs to other interested parties.

Larry, if you think this might be something to set up
for the Gathering, I will send the protype I have to
you for possible display/distribution.

Personally, I use the net as a vast resource. Some of
the stuff is great and I can't wait to try it, some of
it is just interesting but I would never use it.

KR> Folding wings

2008-10-12 Thread Ray Fuenzalida
Just read this one. I will contact Mr. Moore and see
if it is acceptable for me to give them to someone
else. They were given to someone. Will it really
matter if it's me? If he says OK, I will bring them
to the Gathering and we'll go from there.

KR> Folding Wings

2008-10-12 Thread ljhus...@wmconnect.com
I have been gone for awhile and I remember some plans being raffled off for
folding wings. I was just wondering if anyone had used these plans and if
there are any updates on how they work. Thanks for the information

I won the folding wings plan from Mr. Moore. He sent
me his prototype ( which I still have to send back) so
that I couls make my own. It does look pretty cool.
Anyone can contact him direct at rmo...@alltel.net
I believe he is selling the plans. I can tell you
that they look very simple but effective. I still
haven't gotten to the point of my wing construction to
see if I am going to use them (wing tanks seem to be a
hurdle) but I would really like to incorporate them
into my setup. When I do the wings, I will post and
give an update as to what I did. Hope this helps.

I actually bought the KR-1 from Mr. Moore this past weekend that has the
folding wing kit installed. I removed the folding wing kit from it on Sunday
afternoon and would be willing to sell it to anyone that is interested. It
is very easy to install, I just don't have a need for folding wings. Please
contact me if you would like some photos or info.

KR>-folding wings

2008-10-12 Thread The Waldrens

I've seen it!

I was at the Golden West EAA Show in Marysville back in June. There was a
very strange bird that caught my attention. It was a Q-200 that had been
radically modified. Both the front and mid wings had been removed and a
kr-2 wing was installed in the traditional place ( under the cockpit ) , a
spring landing gear was added, and if I remember correctly a "T" style
horizontal stablizer was added on top of the tail. The reason the owner
did this was the Q-200 was to difficult to handle during the ground ops. If
all that wasn't strange enough, the thing that caught my eye was the
folding wing! I should have paid more attention to the details but I
remember he removed the aft spar and main-lower WAF bolts ( and I suppose
the ailrons ) and folded the wing strait up. To do this I would think that
he would have had to have a pretty wide gap between his wing and stub wing
skins.

I shoul have paid more attention to detail but it was hot and by the time I
saw this plane I was burned-out. I do remember that the craftsmanship ( at
least the exterior ) was less than perfect. It is amazing the quality and
apperant condition of some of those aircraft. I wouldn't ride in them if my
life depended on it, yet they've been around for years with hundreds of
hours on them.

By the way, I didn't see any kr's there.
