KR>LED nav lights on sale

2008-10-12 Thread Ross Youngblood
Virgil,
That is a terrific idea! Thanks!
I found some nifty composite fasteners in the ACS catalog
that would work great to make hardpoints in the wingtip
for attaching these... (unless you simply glue them in).
(EZ-point nuts & Studs) 04-06330 Aircraft Spruce).
I'm getting a few and seeing if they will work to attach
some nutplates to my fwd deck for the inst panel.

KR>LED nav lights on sale

2008-10-12 Thread Mark Langford
Dana forwarded something on LED nav lights a few weeks ago. While they were
originally designed for RVs, the guy also made some generic ones for the
rest of us. He offers them assembled or as a kit. I bought a kit for $125,
and will install them in my wingtips one of these days. Power consumption
is a tiny fraction of what incandecents use, which is why they appeal to me.

It looks like you still have to make your lenses. If this is so, and any of
you do it, please let us know how you did it to come out with something like
what is in the picture.

They look really nice and the price is right.

I'm not sure what you mean by "fixture", but my kit came with PC boards,
LEDs, ICs, and resistors. You end up with exactly what the guy is holding
in his hand. I don't know what else you'd need, unless you were building an
RV...

I would assume you would need some kind of clear enclosure in the wingtip to
install them, or do you put the leds just out in the weather exposed???

Thanks,

Yes, I'm sure they sell a complete compliment of lenses and mounting
enclosures for the KR1, KR2 and KR2S, in a variety of colors. But since
I'm a cheapskate, I'm going to mount mine out in the rain...

2008-10-12 Thread Ross Youngblood
Mark,
I think John is looking for a solution to the
problem of fabricating a plexiglas lens for the
assembly. Although the LED's are sealed, the
back of the PCB is subject to corrosion, so it probably
should be enclosed... you could encapsulate the PCB
in some type of plastic coating.
Also... hanging all those LED's in the breeze makes
for some drag as well.
