Actually it seems to be a problem with the files I downloaded from
Pootle, if I revert them and do make build-l10n-only the old
translations show back fully.

[libreoffice-l10n] Pulling translation from Pootle for local build

[Khaled Hosny]

I’m trying to test the latest Arabic translation on a local build from
source, it is enough to download the PO files from Pootle and extract
them to the translation/source/ar/, or are there any post-processing
steps needed? I just did that and I see lots of comments like “#. eDUKr”
in the files I got from Pootle, not sure of they are harmless.

Vertical Mongolian works just fine, but the lines are ordered from right
to left (like vertical CJK) but for Mongolian they should be from left
to right.

I don’t think the current LibreOffice l10n system supports plural forms
at all. This probably will be possible if the switch to gettext ever
happens, but this seems to have been stalled.

In general, it is a very bad practice to split translatable strings into
different parts. Even if it duplicating parts of the strings increases
the work for translators, it is often the only way to gt proper
translation for many languages. The increased effort can always be
alleviated by good translation memory.

I do not really understand some translators insistence on touching
anything, ever. Yes translation is hard, but so is any other part of the
development. Are you suggesting that everything is kept frozen for ever
because it affects “about 130 languages”! This is becoming really
absurd.

Huh? English (US) is the “source” language, changes to it should, by
default, be reflected in all other localisation, unless those changes
are not applicable to the target language, but this is the exception not

So? Report a bug about the bad translation, how is that relevant to the
fact that people think that using proper quotation marks, for example,
is a fancy, useless thing that they should not be bothered about?

 FR didn't translate their SC directory so you can easily check there, at
 least 70% of Calc changes are first letter capitalisation or : on end of
 string.

So, the original strings were badly written, should they remain like
that for ever? And inserting a colon where appropriate is not language
specific (unless your language does not use punctuation) so all
translations must be changed to reflect this change in source strings.

I don't understand why people are fixated on the case changes! These are
not the only “cosmetic” changes people were complaining about. The changes
themselves were never may point, but the way people is complaining about
them is what I'm worried about as it shows that some localiser seem to have
total disregard to things that are intrinsic to the quality of any textual
material, let alone localisation.

Can you elaborate on how IE8 does not work? It should work in theory,
but we don't actively test it (note that, we are in the process of
upgrading to newer versions of some JavaScript libraries like jQuery
which drops support for IE8 and older, so future Pootle versions will
not be able to support such browsers).

Is the ahelp tag almost alway a top level one? If yes, then I think
the best way is for PO extraction tool to strip the tags completely and
use the hid as msgctx (the PO to help converter will have to be updated,
too).

 It would make sense to take this into account, when you build a local
 TM and/or eveluate matches from the local TM.

I think the fuzzy matching in translate toolkit is pretty simplistic, it
probably uses Levenshtein distance and don't do any parsing of the text.

We have some ideas on how to improve this, but nothing implemented yet.

You can try to experiment with pomigrate2 tool from translate toolkit
with or without -p option and see if it gives you better results (with
-p option it will use the same logic used by Pootle).
